The impact of pro-oxidative storage conditions on the aroma profile of Hallertauer Mittelfruh hops (poster presentation at the 2013 ASBC Annual meeting)

ABSTRACT
Peacock suggested in 1980 that the oxygenated fraction of hop oil, although relatively small in concentration, is critical to the sought-after noble hop aroma. These US researchers have tested it. By storing Mittelfrueh hops in prooxidative conditions, the GCMS results show a clear increase in terpenoids and oxygen-containing compounds and a simultaneous decrease in terpenes and hydrocarbon compounds. The sensory quality of these oxidized aroma compounds were described with herbal, spicy, woody, and earthy odors, which are associated with a "noble" hop character. However of course, the HSI value increases and alpha and beta acids are degraded. Brewing trials are planned to determine the impact on hop aroma in beer.

Brewery news USA: Heineken competing with craft beer phenomenon in an indirect way
"You cannot compete with Heineken or any other brand against the craft beer phenomenon," Heineken CEO Jean-Francois Van Boxmeer was quoted as saying by BeverageDaily.com earlier this week.

The above sentence can be taken a few different ways by craft beer enthusiasts. The first instinct is to celebrate his admission — "Of course a macrobeer can’t compete with a craft brew!" — but that’s not exactly what Van Boxmeer means. As would be expected from a CEO of a publicly owned company, he’s not discussing the quality of the product. Van Boxmeer is talking about money, sales, profit, and the unending growth a big company like Heineken is supposed to show. Though the "craft beer phenomenon" has less than 10 percent of the U.S. beer market in sales, that number has been rising. Even more frightening to Big Beer is the fact that as craft beer sales and volume have increased over the past few years, macrobrew sales have begun to decline. Per Van Boxmeer on the same call, to Societie Generale analyst Jamie Norman, said: "Craft beers have been taking the lion’s share of beer market growth over the last decade — practically exclusively." Craft beer appears ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CA: Green Flash Brewing collaborates with Wirtz Beverage Minnesota

Brewery news USA: Heineken Light adding new, more typical of craft styles hop
Heineken is hoping to jump-start sales of its struggling light brand by taking a page out of the craft beer playbook, CNBC reported on August 29.

The brewery is changing the flavor profile of Heineken Premium Light by adding Cascade hops, one of the most popular craft beer styles. The hops are found in brews such as Sierra Nevada Pale Ale and Anchor Steam Liberty Ale.

"What we see and hear a lot about light beer now is consumers have become tired of the taste—the light brands are a little too watery for them and not a rewarding enough experience," said Olga Osminkina, senior brand director at Heineken USA. "Cascade hops are not a familiar addition to a light type of beer, so that's going to put Heineken Light in a different category."

Heineken Light hopes to differentiate itself as the light beer category finds itself struggling.

Total case sales of light beer, excluding flavored malt beverage, have declined 3.6 percent this year through mid-July compared with the year-earlier period; sales by dollar have declined 2.7, according to Dan Wandel, a beer analyst with the market research firm IRI. (Its data excludes bar and restaurant sales.)

Case sales in the "premium light" category—Heineken Light's niche—are ...More info on site

The brew is available now through October in 22-ounce bombers and on draft throughout Washington and Oregon, as well as across Total Wine & More’s retail footprint. Billed as a German-style ale, Vienna (5.6% abv) is Diamond Knot’s own version of an Oktoberfest, featuring amber red colouring.

Diamond Knot produces a core portfolio of eight year-round bottled and draft offerings, as well as various seasonals. The brewer is also in the process of expanding its operations this year with a new 8,900-square-foot brewpub, slated to open in October.

The newest addition to Full Sail’s Limited Lager Series (LTD), Oktoberfest is the seventh recipe in the brewery’s LTD line-up, Brew Bound reported on August, 28.

LTD means limited edition, but according to Full Sail’s CEO & Founder Irene Firmat, it means something even more: Live the Dream. The next beer in Full Sail’s LTD Lager Series is Black Bock (LTD 06) which will be released for the holiday season in six-packs and draft.

Brewery news Zambia: SABMiller’s subsidiary records 12% growth in lager volumes this year
SABMiller Africa Plc company managing director for Africa, Mark Bowman has said his firm has this year recorded a growth volume of 12 per cent on lager products by its subsidiaries operating in Zambia, Times of Zambia reported.

Outlining the performance of the company’s subsidiaries throughout Africa in SABMiller’s annual report for 2013, Mr Bowman said a lager volume growth of 12 per cent was achieved through improved availability and an improved economic environment in Zambia.

He said the lager volumes grew by six per cent despite cycling strong comparative growth of 14 per cent in the prior year.

Mr Bowman said constraints that had previously limited growth in Zambia had now been alleviated with the commissioning of a new brew house in Ndola in November 2012.

SABMiller Africa operates three subsidiaries in Zambia namely, Zambian Breweries Plc (ZB), National Breweries Plc (NB) for liquor and Heinrich Syndicate Limited, which produces the Maheu beverage.

“Lager volume growth of 12 per cent was achieved through improved availability and an improved economic environment.

“The premium portfolio benefited from strong growth of Castle Lite, while Castle Lager and Mosi, performed well in the mainstream segment,” Mr Bowman said.

“The Castle brand family continued to deliver robust growth, with the premium ...More info on site

Brewery news Belarus: Heineken to optimize its beer and kvass production capacities
Heineken plans to optimize the beer and kvass production capacities in Belarus by the end of 2013, BelTA reported on August 29.

"We are planning to relocate part of the production equipment from the Rechitsa brewery to Bobruisk where the production of beer and kvass will be concentrated. A malt plant, a warehouse and a distribution center will be left in Rechitsa, which will ensure the company's presence in Gomel Oblast,” said the company.

As a result, Heineken expects that the operating efficiency will be increased and the favorable conditions will be created for further investment in Belarusian business. The planned changes will not affect the production and brand portfolio, the company has assured.

Heineken plans to start acting on its plans already in September and complete them by the end of this year.

Heineken N. V. arrived on the Belarusian market in December 2007. In Belarus Heineken operates two production sites: Heineken Breweries (Bobruisk) and Rogachev Concentrated Milk Factory (Gomel Oblast).

In Belarus Heineken produces licensed and Belarusian beer: Bobrov, Rechitskoye, Dnepro, Zlaty Bazant, Gosser, Doctor Diesel, PIT and kvass Khatni.
