The relativeness of the HSI value

ABSTRACT
For a lot of brewers the HSI value is an important parameter to judge the freshness of the hops purchased and therefore often specified for the purchase. This study looked into the development of the HSI values during the growing season. They found initial HSI values were ranging from 0.18 to 0.30, with a highest range of increase from first to last picking date of 0.10! This makes clear that a higher initial HSI value does not necessarily indicate a higher deterioration rate of hops!

The apple version exceeded sales expectations, Chicago-based joint venture MillerCoors said in a press release.

“We’ve always seen Redd’s as a platform to give consumers new and exciting flavor options,” said Andrew Zrike, Redd’s Apple Ale brand manager. “Redd’s Strawberry Ale is a refreshing change of pace.”

Both are flavored ales with “low malt and bitterness cues,” MillerCoors said. The strawberry version has an apple finish.

Brewery news USA: NSLC registered declining beer sales
The main problem of the decreasing beer sales seems to be teh poor wheater, Metro News reported on September, 5.

Regarding the poor weather, NSLC cited a 30 per cent increase in precipitation as being a driving factor behind its first quarter results. Sales for the quarter run from April 1 to June 30.

Other factors behind the reduced sales included the timing of Easter sales, which were accounted for in the previous fiscal year.

Amongst the drink categories, sales of beer, spirits and ready-to-drink all fell. Beer in fact was down 5.8 per cent in sales volume and 3.8 per cent in sales revenue.

There seems to be a correlation between the weather and spirits/ready-to-drink categories.

Brewery news Australia & India: The Australian Brewery to start shipping its beer to India
In a first for Australia and craft beer, the Australian Brewery (AB) has secured a deal to send its award-winning Pale Ale – in cans – to the world’s biggest untapped beer market, The Shout reported on September 6.

At the invitation of Austrade and the Craft Beer Industry Association (CBIA), the brewery sent its marketing manager and ‘canbassador’ David Ward to India to present at the Australian Craft Beer promotion, in Delhi.

The result was offers from two distributors to import the Rouse Hill brewery’s flagship beer into the second-most populous country.

“The big local brands such as Kingfisher are launching premium variations to their existing product for the burgeoning middle- and upper-classes,” Ward said.

“But it’s a little strange to go into a bottle shop and there are so few beers; there are some European premiums, couple of micro-breweries starting up, but there aren’t really any craft beers there – we’ll be the first.

“Austrade were fantastic; everybody was really keen to get us board.”

The AB is preparing to dispatch its first 250 cases, and Ward says although they are starting with just the one distributor they hope export will grow to about 2-3 containers annually.

He confirmed the deal will likely stretch ...More info on site

Brewery news Latvia: Aldaris to focus on exclusive top-quality and premium beer brands
Joint-stock beer and soft drinks producer Aldaris has decided to concentrate on production of exclusive top-quality and premium beer brands, therefore PET production facility will be moved out of Latvia; new jobs will be created as a result of the changes, but the company's overall workforce will be reduced, Aldaris communications director Laura Krastina told the Nozare.lv business portal on September 5.

Since the beginning of the year, Latvia's beer market has shrunk by 3%, whereas in 2012, the market declined by 5%. Furthermore, there is a fierce competition in the inexpensive beer brands' segment, which is why part of Aldaris operations, for instance, production of PET bottles, will be moved to other Carlsberg group breweries in Europe. "In order to improve our cost-efficiency significantly, we have decided to change our strategy, moving lower-price segment products to other breweries and concentrating on brewing exclusive beer. This step will help the company to be profitable and viable again, keeping its market leader's positions," says Aldaris CEO Veli Pekka Tennila. The new strategy also envisages organizational changes that will affect part of the company's workers – it is currently unknown how many, but the company will do everything in its power to help ...More info on site

Hops news The Czech Republic: Foreign demand and new niche markets present opportunities for Saaz hops
Czech producers of genuine Saaz hops are taking an upbeat attitude at harvest time as foreign demand and new niche markets present opportunities they hope will offset challenges caused by European agricultural policy and bad weather, The Wall Street Journal reported on September 6.

China, now the world’s largest beer market, has recently become the second-largest importer of Czech hops, a crop that has been a part of the country’s culture and economy since at least the 10th century.

As increasingly affluent Chinese consumers seek western-style luxury items such as quality beers, sales there of the premium Saaz hops, which Czechs call “green gold,” are rising fast, according to Zdenek Rosa, chairman of Bohemia Hop, a wholesale exporter of the traditional commodity.

Additionally, all major Japanese brewers continue to use genuine Czech hops for their premium brews, though export volumes have waned slightly in recent years in part because of the country’s economic malaise, he said. Still, the island country remains the single largest export market for its Czech hops, Mr. Rosa said at a conference outlining the results of this year’s harvest.

Hiroo Matsui of Suntory Liquors Ltd. beer development division, who was in Prague to participate in Europe’s biggest hops harvest festival ...More info on site

Brewery news World: SABMiller’s Graham Mackay resumes role as non-executive chairman after brain tumor treatment
SABMiller Plc, the world’s second-biggest brewer, said Graham Mackay resumed his role as non-executive chairman after treatment for a brain tumor, Bloomberg reported on September 6.

Mackay returned to the position September 5 after being off work since May, the London-based company said. John Manser, who had been acting chairman, will return to his former role as deputy chairman and senior independent director.

“The directors are extremely grateful to John Manser for stepping so ably into the breach as acting chairman during my absence, and I personally have relied hugely on his support and wise counsel during what has been a very difficult few months for my family and me,” Mackay said in a statement.

In April, Mackay stepped down early as the brewer’s chief executive officer after undergoing brain surgery. As CEO, he led a slew of acquisitions, including the A$10.5 billion ($9.6 billion) takeover of Foster’s Group Ltd. in 2011. SABMiller generated $23.2 billion in revenue last year and competes with the world’s biggest brewer, Anheuser-Busch InBev NV, as well as Heineken NV and Carlsberg A/S.

Alan Clark, a company veteran of more than two decades, replaced Mackay as CEO.

“I am delighted that the transition of the chief executive’s management responsibilities to ...More info on site
