Which aroma components should be measured if you want to characterize a certain hop variety in a beer?
ABSTRACT
This question was addressed by a Belgian researcher who produced trial beers with 6
different hop varieties using late hopping and a combination of late and dry hopping. With the determination of 44 different hop aroma components using HS-SPME GC-MS they were able to show strong varietal differences. The major differences between late hopping and late and dry hopping were found in different concentrations of oxygenated monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes. Still, the sensory evaluations for
a better comparision will be presented in the near future. However they observed that for most of the beers, the aging flavour developed to a higher extent if dry hopping was applied.

Denmark: Recent tax reduction did not lead to lower beer prices - research
|
The recent reduction in the tax on beer and soft drinks in Denmark has not been passed down to consumers in the country, according to local research.
In July, the Government approved a 15% cut in the tax on beer and soft drinks in Denmark. However, a report by the country’s labour-run economic policy institute, Arbejderbevægelsens Erhvervsråd (AE), has claimed that, instead of reducing retail price, brewers have mainly used the tax cut to strengthen profit margins.
The Government had hoped the tax cut would bolster domestic sales and stem rising imports of cheaper beer and beverages from neighbouring Germany.
The AE’s latest August figures reveal a 0.1% decrease in beer prices for the month, while retail prices for soft drinks fell in the month by 0.5% year-on-year.
“It’s obvious that prices did not fall much, otherwise the general tax cut would be reflected in the prices paid by consumers in stores,” said AE analyst Frederik Pedersen.

Middle East: Non-alcoholic beer consumption exploding in the Middle East
|
Beer drinking is exploding in the Middle East, with Iranians drinking non-alcoholic beer four times as much in 2012 as in 2007, Your Middle East reported on October 10.
Although people in the Middle East still drink more beer with than without alcohol, consumers in countries such as Iran, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and the United Arab Emirates have a growing appetite for the halal version of the beverage.
According to The Economist, 2.2 billion litres of non-alcoholic beer was sold globally, an increase of 80% in five years. The Middle East accounted for more than a third of the total consumption.
“More recent sales growth is the result of growing consumer aspirations,” Maii Abdul-Rahmen, an analyst at the research firm Euromonitor said.
Guilda Saber, brand manager of Laziza, a Lebanese non-alcoholic beer, said drinking beer, even if it is non-alcoholic, “taps into a popular desire for a globalised lifestyle that neither fruit juice nor even Coca-Cola can offer”.
Fatwas from leading clerics in Egypt and Saudi Arabia have declared it allowed for Muslims to drink non-alcoholic beer.

Canada: Malting barley values lower in CWB’s October Pool Return Outlook
|
CWB on October 10 updated Pool Return Outlooks (PROs) for the 2013-14 Annual Pool and Futures Choice Annual Pool.
Compared to the last PROs released on September 26, projected returns for malt barley are C$5 per tonne lower. Select CW Two-Row Malting Barley is now estimated at C$ 265.00 / tonne (annual pool).
Malting barley prices continue to decline both at export position and in the country. The market is focusing on Australian malting barley prospects that could pressure malt barley values lower, CWB commented.

USA & Mexico: Mexican brewing industry expected to become an important buyer of US barley
|
The Mexican brewing industry anticipates continuing growth in demand over the next ten years. In fact, Mexico is currently the largest U.S. malting barley export market, and further demand growth creates an opportunity that the U.S. Grains Council is aggressively pursuing, 4-traders reported on October 10.
Mexican buyers, quality control and research and develop representatives continue to examine at U.S. varieties, evaluations, research and price to visualize the best opportunity.
To assist in this evaluation, the Council escorted a small Mexican malting barley team through the barley belt to discuss crop conditions and marketing opportunities, and to build a contact base with barley producers. The team also attended a micro-brewing conference to learn about new trends in the U.S. micro-brewing industry.
The craft beer industry in Mexico is in its infant stage but has shown a tremendous growth potential during the last four years, going from a small number of plants to more than 100 today. It is expected that this trend will continue which will create additional demand for barley malt.
Mexican malting barley imports have increased about 65 percent in just one year. This fast paced growth has given the Council the perfect opportunity to promote U.S. barley to the Mexican brewing industry.
