Brewery news Germany: Germans want beer purity law to be recognized as world heritage
German brewers want their famed beer purity laws to be given an official seal of approval as world heritage, Irish Independent reported on December 2.

The German Brewers' Federation said it has applied to Unesco, the United Nations' cultural agency, to have the purity law - the "Reinheitsgebot" - recognised as a piece of the world's "intangible heritage."

The purity law dates back to 1516 and allows nothing but water, barley malt, hops and yeast for brewing. Germany boasts around 1,300 breweries and 5,000 different beers.

If it wins a place on the Unesco list, the purity law will find itself in diverse company that includes the Argentine tango, the Spanish flamenco, the French gastronomic meal and Turkey's Kirkpinar oil-wrestling festival.

Brewery news USA: AB InBev concealed plans for price hikes in Group Modelo acquisition, beer drinkers say
A group of beer drinkers asked a California federal court to revive their antitrust suit against Anheuser-Busch InBev’s $20.1 million acquisition of Group Modelo, arguing on December 1 that AB InBev misled the court about future price increases and that plaintiffs are entitled to new discovery, Law 360 reported on December 2.

The plaintiffs claim Constellation Brands Inc., the company that bought Modelo’s US assets to dispel government antitrust concerns, was planning price hikes even as AB InBev’s lawyers said it would be “illogical” to believe Modelo’s prices would rise in tandem with AB InBev’s. The plaintiffs filed a memorandum on December 1 in reply to their motion last month to vacate their claim’s dismissal.

“If defendants had been truthful on the record about price increases, rather than misleading this court and plaintiffs, plaintiffs’ case should have and would have been permitted to proceed,” the memo said.

A California federal judge dismissed the suit in September, ruling that the consumers had failed to offer evidence backing up their assertion that Constellation, which bought Modelo’s US assets to settle an antitrust suit filed by the US Department of Justice, would serve as a "puppet" to the beer giant.

The plaintiffs — a group of nine ...More info on site

Barley news UK: Winter barley planting completed as at the end of November
Conditions in autumn 2013 were ideal for timely drilling and establishment of winter crops in the UK, reversing the swing to spring cropping for harvest 2013, ADAS reported on November 27.

Winter barley planting was complete as at the end of November.

Drilling of winter barley progressed largely unhindered, with most drilled within the optimum window during October, and all by the end of November. Crops established well and most are now tillering. Mild conditions until early November allowed aphids to migrate into crops and foliar insecticide were required for early sown crops or those drilled without seed treatment. Disease levels remained low during autumn, but mildew is becoming common on susceptible varieties, and rhynchosporium and net botch are present at low levels.

Barley news World: Cargill hires new M&A business head aiming at expansion in Asia
Cargill has hired Mumtaz Kazmi, previously the mergers and acquisitions head for Credit Suisse in the Middle East, to help the agribusiness firm expand in Asia, Trade Arabia reported on December 2 citing two banking sources aware of the matter.

Cargill is one of the world's largest privately held corporations and a leading commodities trader. Like other large US-based agribusiness companies, it has been stepping up acquisitions in resource-rich and fast-growing emerging markets in recent months, seeking to diversify away from the US.

Kazmi, who worked at Credit Suisse for more than a decade before leaving the firm in late 2012, has been appointed as Cargill's strategy and business development manager for Asia Pacific, a role which includes leading M&A efforts for Cargill in the region, according to his LinkedIn profile.

He will be based in Singapore and his main focus will be to seek acquisitions in South-East Asia, the sources said.

Cargill expects its acquisition of Joe White Maltings in Australia to be completed by the end of the year, it said in October.

The commodity trader also purchased full ownership of the Prairie Malt joint venture in Saskatchewan and acquired a shrimp feed manufacturer in Thailand.

Kazmi led the regional M&A business for the ...More info on site
