USA, PA: Craft beer means $2 bln to PA economy
|
Craft beer was a $2 billion industry in Pennsylvania in 2012, ranking it No. 4 nationally, a trade group said. The Keystone State ranks only behind three more populous states — California ($4.7 billion), Texas ($2.3 billion) and New York ($2.2 billion) — but ahead of Colorado ($1.6 billion), where the craft brewing industry has a major foothold, according to the Boulder, Colorado-based Brewers Association, Philadelphia Business Journal reported on December 31.
Pennsylvania had 20,867 people working in the craft-beer trade in 2012, earning $666.4 million in wages. Through 2012, it had 102 breweries, up from 93 the previous year. In craft-beer production, Pennsylvania is behind only California.
Downingtown, PA-based Victory Brewing Co. is the state’s largest craft brewer. A “craft brewer,” as defined by the Brewers Association, produces fewer than 6 million barrels a year. (Pottsville-based D.G. Yuengling & Son is the state’s largest overall brewer.)
Overall, American craft brewers contributed $33.9 billion to the U.S. economy in 2012.
According to the Brewers Association, economic impact figures are derived from the total impact of beer brewed by craft brewers as it moves through the three-tier system (breweries, wholesalers and retailers), as well as all non-beer products that brewpub restaurants sell.

USA, AL: A beer revolution is brewing in Alabama
|
Just a few years ago beer consumers didn't have many choices other than Budweiser or Miller in Alabama, but a series of laws passed since 2009 has opened up Alabama to the world of high-alcohol specialty beers, neighborhood brew pubs and microbreweries. It's a big change in a Bible Belt state that still has dry counties and legally banned home beer brewing and wine making until this year, Al.com reported on December 27.
Today, Alabama drinkers can still grab some Buds, and many do. But there's also Truck Stop Honey ale, brewed by the Gadsden-based Back Forty Beer Co.; Monkeynaut IPA by Huntsville's Straight to Ale LLC; Vanillaphant Porter by Avondale Brewing Co. of Birmingham; and Section Street Wheat by Fairhope Brewing Co., located on the scenic eastern shore of Mobile Bay.
And unlike before, hobbyists can now legally make their own beer after purchasing supplies at stores like Hop City Craft Beer & Wine, a Birmingham retailer that state agents raided in 2012 before the law changed. Auburn University is even starting a brewing program next year for anyone who needs lessons.

USA, WI: Beer brewing continues to grow in Wisconsin
|
Wisconsin’s craft beer industry showed no signs of slowing in 2013. The state’s beer drinkers can’t seem to get enough of locally made products as Wisconsin Brewing Co. in November opened an $11 million brewery in the Verona Commerce Park.
The company is led by Carl Nolen and Kirby Nelson, the former president and brewmaster, respectively, at Capital Brewery in Middleton. It plans to ultimately produce 250,000 barrels of beer a year. A $12 million addition to house a bottling line could come as soon as 2015, 77Square.com reported on December 29.
Capital Brewery is also expanding. The Middleton company announced in June plans for an $11 million production brewery and bottling facility in Sauk City while retaining its Middleton brewery operation and beer garden.
In Madison, Next Door Brewing Company opened on Atwood Avenue while near Prairie du Sac, Wollersheim Winery in April released its first batch of brandy.

USA, NC: Big growth expected in NC beer in 2014
|
The new year in North Carolina beer means more than bottle releases and new breweries. The industry and scene is poised to establish itself as a national player and become one of the top craft beer producing states once Sierra Nevada starts production outside Asheville later this year, News & Observer reported on December 31.
Sean Lilly Wilson, chief executive officer, Fullsteam Brewery in Durham says: With the launch of a number of new, experimentally minded breweries, the maturity of existing breweries and the influx of established, diverse regional breweries, North Carolina is in the upper echelon of craft beer states.
North Carolina is not only the “state of Southern beer,” it is considered by many one of the top 10 beer states in the nation.

USA, WA: Northwest hop industry growth driven by craft beer sales
|
Growing consumer demand for craft beers helped make 2013 a good year for Northwest hop farmers. A new report from the US Department of Agriculture shows hop production in the Northwest grew by 13 percent in 2013, OPB News reported on December 31.
Farmers not only grew more, but they also got paid more per pound. The total value of the 2013 crop was around $250 million. That’s up nearly 30 percent from the year before.
Larry Sidor has been buying Northwest hops for nearly four decades. He’s the head brewer and a partner at Bend’s Crux Fermentation Project. He says the rise of craft beer has been a boon for farmers since many of those beers require not only more hops, but varieties that are more expensive.
Most US hops are grown in Washington, which represents nearly 80 percent of all domestic production.

USA, MN: Mankato Brewery growing production by 40 percent, expanding to Twin Cities
|
Mankato Brewery will be growing its production by 40 percent while expanding its service area in the Twin Cities, Mankato Free Press reported on December 30.
The company has had trouble keeping up with its orders, co-founder Tim Tupy said, so the owners decided to buy new fermentation tanks ahead of schedule. With the new equipment, slated to arrive next week and begin production within a month, the brewery will be making nearly 3,000 barrels, or 93,000 gallons, a year.
The extra capacity also allows the brewery to seek more customers.
It has signed an agreement with Capitol Beverage of Minneapolis, which will become its sixth distributor. The deal adds much of the Twin Cities, including its northern suburbs, to Mankato Brewery’s distribution area. In terms of population, it is the brewery’s largest distributor.
Mankato Brewery is also introducing a new beer, called Saffron Kilt. The Scottish reference comes from Head Brewer Bobby Blasey, who plays the bagpipes. Saffron Kilt doesn’t contain the spice, though it does have its gold-brown color.

USA, DC: Fair Winds Brewing Company raises $1.4 million to open packaging brewery
|
The DC area beer scene expansion continues: Fair Winds Brewing Co. plans to open a 30-barrel packaging brewery in Fairfax County next year, Washington Business Journal reported on December 30.
The company, which is led by Fairfax resident Casey Jones, just raised $1.4 million in equity from investors, according to a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission.
The total cost of getting the brewery up and running is expected to be more than $2 million, Jones said. Fair Winds doesn't have a site confirmed yet, but the company is bidding on property in Merrifield.
Although the Fairfax County area has several brewpubs — Sweetwater Tavern and Falls Church's Mad Fox Brewing Co. among them — Fair Winds would be the county's first packaging brewery. Brewpubs sell 75 percent of their beers in-house, while packaging breweries sell to other establishments
"I live in Fairfax, and it's also one of the most affluent counties in the country," he said. "We thought it was a great opportunity because in this environment, there was really no local Fairfax beer on tap."

USA, NJ: 902 Brewing Company raises more than $35,000 to open brewery in Hoboken, NJ
|
A group of Hoboken beer makers are one step closer to forming what would be the first brewery the city has seen in several years, The Jersey Journal reported on December 31.
902 Brewing Company raised more than $35,000 through a kickstarter launched in November. The campaign aimed to raise funds for equipment needed for larger-scale brewing operations. The company has already received $36,106 in donations.
The brewery has been more than a year in the making. Two of the company's founders — Colby Janisch and Tucker Littleton — started experimenting with beer recipes in their apartment at 902 Washington Street. The two later partnered with friend Andrew Brown to form an LLC in August 2012, and they decided to name the company after the apartment where their brewing ambitions started.
Brown said that the three are still finalizing a location for the brewery.
Hoboken is considered the home of the United States' first brewery, which opened in 1663. Despite the city's deep rooted history in the business, it's been some time since a brewery has set up shop in Hoboken.

USA: Big Sky Brewing sues Anheuser-Busch over slogan
|
Big Sky Brewing Co. alleges Anheuser-Busch’s “hold my beer and watch this” videos created by actor John Krasinski violate its trademark of the phrase, STLtoday.com reported on December 30.
Under its Bud Light brand, Anheuser-Busch debuted a new online video series a month ago written and directed by Krasinski and business partner Danny Stessen. Krasinski played Jim Halpert in the TV series “The Office.”
The three Bud Light videos, humorous in tone, depict unpredictable things that can happen when someone is asked to “hold my beer and watch this.” Since their debut, the videos have attracted nearly 5 million views on YouTube, aided by the hashtag #holdmybeer, which can make the videos easier to share on Twitter.
Big Sky, a craft brewer based in Missoula, MT, that sells beer in 24 states, filed a federal lawsuit on December 20 in Missoula against Anheuser-Busch for trademark infringement.
In the suit, Big Sky says it has used the slogan since at least 2004 and holds a trademark for the phrase “hold my beer and watch this.”

South Africa: South Africa undergoing craft beer revolution

South Africa is a nation of beer drinkers. It constitutes 34 percent of Africa's formal beer market, according to government statistics from 2012. On average, South Africans consume almost 60 litres of beer per person every year – far more than the 14.6 litres per person in the rest of Africa, or the global average of 22 litres, Voice of America reported on December 30.
But up until relatively recently, the only beers widely available to South Africans were commercial lagers and pilsners brewed in factories.
Now, however, the country is undergoing a craft beer revolution, with small, independent breweries opening everywhere. South Africa’s beer landscape appears to be changing irreversibly.
Craft beer is brewed slowly, according to traditional methods and using natural ingredients, including hops, barley, malt, yeast and mineral water. Commercial beer brewers often use chemicals to rush the brewing process, but true artisanal beer makers shun them. Mass-produced beer also generally tastes bland compared with craft brew, which is made in a variety of styles and flavors.

Belgium & China: Duvel Moortgat’s products enjoying strong demand in China
|
Belgium’s Duvel Moortgat is enjoying a strong growth in demand for its products in China, despite the fact that prices of imported products are much higher than those of the local brands, Retail Detail Belgique reported on December 24.
When the company started to ship its beers to China in 2007, total volumes only amounted to 200 hl, but 2013 saw already several containers dispatched to China. “Our target for 2013 is at about half the volume we ship to the US. If we continue at this rate, we will surpass the British market in four years,” Moortgat’s General Director, Vincent Smits, said.
In China, Moortgat’s most popular brands are Vedette, Achouffe, and Liefmans Fruitesse. It’s mostly white beer – sweet and not too bitter or strong - that is enjoying such a success, the company said.
Duvel Moortgat does not intend to start brewing Duvel beer in any other parts of the world. “If you brew it elsewhere, it will be difficult to call it “Belgian beer”. Only a beer destined exclusively for local consumption in China could be produced in China,” Nick Papa, Sales Manager China North, said.

Zambia: Zambian Breweries forced to increase prices due to 50% beer excise hike
|
Zambian Breweries Plc. announced on January 3 an increase in the recommended retail price of its clear beer alcoholic beverages by 16% on its Returnable Glass Bottle (RGB) pack, excluding sorghum-based Eagle Lager, taking effect January 1st 2014. This follows the 50% increase in Excise Duty on clear beer from 40% to 60%, which the government recently announced as part of the 2014 National Budget - an increase that will make Zambian beer the most expensive in the region.
As a result, in order to mitigate illegal smuggling that would result from higher beer prices relative to its regional peers, which was caused by the increase in excise duties, the company has, for the time being, decided to absorb the excise increase on its non-returnable packs. Zambian Breweries Plc. believes that this measure will reduce the detrimental effects that the excise duty increase will have on local manufacturing. The company, however, notes that since it will continue paying excise tax on the non-returnable packs, the increased excise duty will be an added direct cost to the product type and will therefore detrimentally affect company profitability.
