Brewery news USA: Trappist brewery launches in Massachusetts
In recent years, the simple monks of Saint Joseph’s Abbey in Spencer, MA have quietly set about building one of the biggest breweries in the state and the first Trappist brewery on American soil. Their sleek 36,000-square-foot brewery — modeled after multimillion-dollar facilities in Europe — has already made its first commercial batches of Belgian-style ale, which will go on sale next week, Bostonglobe.com reported on January 10.

It’s a big change for the monks, but it was a matter of necessity, said Brother Isaac Keeley, director of the brewery.

“In our little monastic economy, expenses were rising more rapidly than our income,” he said, standing in his monk’s robes in a state-of-the-art beer laboratory inside the brewery. “We needed to generate more income.”

And generate income it will. The Trappists aim to produce 4,000 barrels of ale this year, the equivalent of 1.3 million 12-ounce bottles, but the brewery has the capacity to generate 40,000 barrels, or more than 13 million bottles of beer.

Only a small number of people have tasted the new ale and toured the plant, situated deep within the monks’ 2,000-acre monastic compound in this Central Massachusetts town about a dozen miles west of Worcester. Although the venture has ...More info on site

Barley news USA, ND & MN: Barley has transitioned from a commodity crop to a specialty crop
Barley used to be a big deal in North Dakota and northwest Minnesota. From the perspective of overall US production, it still is, Agweek.com reported on January 13.

But the crop has taken on a new role in the region, a commodity group leader said.

“Barley has transitioned from a commodity crop to a specialty crop,” said Steve Edwardson, executive administrator of the North Dakota Barley Council.

Edwardson spoke on January 8 at the annual Lake Region Extension Service Roundup in Devils Lake, ND. The two-day event, which began on January 7, drew about 700 people. Speakers, primarily from the extension service, commodity groups and private companies, addressed a wide range of topics, including barley.

Once, barley was widely grown in the Upper Midwest. But corn production has moved north and west from the Corn Belt, causing some North Dakota farmers to raise less barley or to quit growing it altogether, Edwardson said.

Barley growers “affectionately refer” to corn “as an invasive species,” he said.

Because of competition from corn and other crops, U.S. barley acreage has fallen by an average of 312,000 acres per year since 1987, Edwardson said.

The reduction in acres had led production and exports of feed barley, which is fed to livestock, ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, TX & AZ: Pedernales Brewing Company plans to expand distribution to Arizona
The plethora of beers on Arizona store shelves may soon have some new Texas-sized competition.

Pedernales Brewing Co., a craft brewer out of Fredericksburg, Texas, is searching for an Arizona distributor to bring its line of brews to the Grand Canyon State, Phoenix Business Journal reported on January 8.

The San Antonio Business Journal wrote on January 8 that Pedernales is one of the many Texas breweries taking advantage of loosened regulations that allow Texas-based breweries to better compete outside the state.

Since shipping its first batch of brew in April 2012, Pedernales has gained 13 Texas distributors, as well as distribution in New Mexico. The brewery even sells south of the border in Mexico. Now it has its sights set on further expansion, including Arizona.

When Arizonans can expect to see Pedernales beer on shelves or on tap is unknown. But Pedernales will find stiff competition with a slew of national brands that currently sell in Arizona, as well as a strong slate of beer from homegrown craft breweries such as Chandler-based SanTan Brewing Co., Tempe-based Four Peaks Brewing Co. and Phoenix-based Phoenix Ale Brewery.

Both SanTan and Four Peaks have opened new multimillion-dollar brewing facilities in the past 14 months to fuel demand. Another ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, UT & WI: Epic Brewing announces expansion to Wisconsin
Epic Brewing announced its expansion into the Wisconsin market with a line of 36 beers. Distribution will be handled by River City Distributing, based in Watertown, WI and will encompass the entire state, Brewbound reported on January 10.

The Wisconsin launch will take place over the course of several days, from Monday, January 13th through Thursday, January 16th and include a series of tasting events.

“We are very excited to become part of Wisconsin’s beer culture.” said Michael Malachowski, “A lot of people have been asking when Epic would be available and now that our Denver brewery is producing its finally time.”

“The mid-west is well known for its love of beer and Epic has been met with excitement and enthusiasm.” said Co-Founder, David Cole, “We are looking forward to working with River City Distributing and meeting new members of the craft beer community.”

Epic Brewing Company, LLC was opened in May of 2010. It was founded in Salt Lake City and is known for its passion for brewing award-winning, boutique, full strength, real Ales and Lagers. Epic is distributed in the following States: Utah, California, Colorado, Oregon, Arizona, Idaho, Nevada, Ohio, Virginia & DC, New Jersey, Minnesota, North Carolina, Michigan, ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada & USA: Ottawa-area microbrewery set to bring its beer to the US
The small brewer, Beau’s All Natural Brewing Co which now employs 84 people at its Vankleek Hill operation, will begin distributing its award-winning brews to retailers across New York state in March, Ottawa Citizen reported on January 13.

The move to serve US consumers is a major accomplishment for Beau’s, which started out as a father-and-son-owned business that first opened its doors on Canada Day in 2006.

“We’re super-excited to finally get to meet the neighbours,” says Beau’s co-founder Steve Beauchesne. “We’ve had our hearts set on keeping the beer we brew within a day’s drive of the brewery, because it’s important to us to have real relationships with the people who serve it, sell it and drink it. Selling into New York state gets our beer out to more people to enjoy, but still lets us be a local brewery.”

Beauchesne and his father, Tim, took a big gamble on the brewery. The two beer lovers left their full-time jobs in order to get the new business up and running at a time when there were very few microbreweries in the area. The first beer they offered was Lug Tread, a light Kolsch-style offering that was immediately accepted by beer drinkers throughout ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MT: The Front Brewing Company expanding in Great Falls
The Front Public House in Great Falls has become a popular destination for beer enthusiasts and recently the company has been stretched thin trying to meet the demand for their popular brews, KRTV Great Falls News reported on January 14.

Now with the purchase of a new building in Great Falls, The Front is hoping to increase distribution.

The Front Brewing Company Head Brewer Travis Ziegler said, "This is the entire brewery that we have right now, so everything that we produce comes out of here, we are a little cramped for space right now."

"It leaves us not able to make some of the beers that people really enjoy here and people have come to like from here," said The Front Public House Owner Brandon Cartwright.

Currently, the Front Brewery distributes 60-70 percent of its beer, supplying nearly 60 Great Falls bars and restaurants and just over 100 other Montana locations.

With the purchase of a new building, they're hoping to increase distribution.

"The biggest part of the expansion I think is, it's going to allow us to really help keep up with the demand for the people that have given us great support, the bars and restaurants throughout the region, so we want to ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, TX: Saint Arnold Brewing Company reports 19% increase in overall production
Saint Arnold Brewing Company, the oldest craft brewery in Texas, reported on January 13 record shipments of more than 58,000 barrels of beer in 2013. It was the third consecutive year that the brewery’s production has increased by approximately 9,000 barrels from the previous year, representing a 19 percent boost in overall production. Saint Arnold’s production has more than doubled since moving its operations to its current brewery on the northern edge of downtown Houston in early 2010, TheFullPint.com reported on January 13.

Saint Arnold Fancy Lawnmower Beer was the brewery’s top seller in 2013, followed by Amber Ale and Santo, a black Kölsch that was introduced in 2011 and won a World Beer Cup medal in 2012. When combined, the brewery’s lineup of seasonal beers sells more than any one year-round brew.

“As we head toward our 20th anniversary in June and reflect on how we got here, I couldn’t be more proud of what we’ve accomplished both in terms of the beer and food we provide and the role we’ve played in helping to encourage the community to embrace craft beer,” said Brock Wagner, founder/brewer of Saint Arnold Brewing. “We anticipate continued growth, but our priority is to continue brewing ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, SC: Brewery 85 ready to open in Greenville in February
Located in a 10,000-square-foot facility on a 6.2-acre tract of land, a new brewery will open its doors in Greenville on February 1 after nearly a year and a half of planning. Local craft beer store The Community Tap will also host a Greenville market launch on January 16 at which some of Brewery 85’s first batches will be available, GSA Business reported on January 9.

“Part of it was not knowing how long things would take,” said the longtime homebrewer and engineer. Other obstacles — including the government shutdown, an excessively rainy summer and land regulation miscommunications — were less predictable.

“Not only are we opening a taproom and a business, but we’re also opening a manufacturing facility,” said McCameron, who received a World Brewing Academy international diploma in brewing technology from the Doemans Academy in Bavaria, Germany. “I’ve only ever been a brewer. I’ve never had to take care of packaging and manufacturing.”

McCameron will run the business alongside the company’s vice president, Jeremy Caldwell, an experienced home brewer who graduated with a business degree from Lander University, and his wife, front office manager, Meredith.

Brewery 85 will join other Upstate breweries such as Thomas Creek Brewery, Quest Brewing Co., Blue Ridge ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MN: Waseca Brewery awaiting county approval
A potential Waseca brewery hopes to open its doors. But the brewery has stirred some controversy in its wake among neighbors. The city of Waseca has seen bars come and go, but has never had a brewery, KEYC reported on January 15.

Michael McQuery, an Oregon native, moved to Waseca with his family with hopes of opening his own business. McQuery says, "What I'd like to call it is Half–Pint Brewing Company. What I want to do isn't something that there is in Minnesota. The cities are getting pretty big in breweries. There really isn't any small farm brewery."

Residents of the city of Waseca cited concerns about noise, increased traffic, and potential crime.

Leon Schoenrock, the Chair of the Waseca Zoning Board, says "They saw it as a bar or a road house kind of thing. I think the commission looked at it as more…being a brewery being more like a winery, more of cultural thing instead of a place people really go to drink a lot."

However, McQuery says that the building would be similar to a winery, allowing people to experience the beer's creation, and not a bar.

"I just want a spot where people can come out into the country and ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, NS: Consultations begin on in-store beer brewing regulations in Nova Scotia
Consultations to develop regulations that would allow people in Nova Scotia to make wine or beer in stores will start this week, Globalnews.ca reported on January 14.

The provincial government says it will work with the beer brewing and winemaking industry to develop regulations and standards that are expected to be introduced in the next legislative session.

“I know people enjoy it as a hobby and I think that it is a service that is important and we should be able to provide it,” said Diana Whalen, the minister in charge of the province’s Liquor Control Act.

Wine Kitz owner Ross Harrington welcomed the news as “exciting.”

“We’ll have input to change our future,” he said.

The right to make beer and wine in so-called U-vint stores flared up a year ago, when the province’s Crown-owned liquor agency sought a court order to prevent the owners of Wine Kitz Halifax and Water ‘n’ Wine in New Glasgow from producing wine and beer in their shops.

“A government levy on every batch made in-store [is] really hard to justify if you’re not going to put the fee on a take-home customer,” said Harrington.

The previous NDP government later ordered Nova Scotia Liquor Corp. to drop the case in ...More info on site

Brewery news Australia: Lion increases its craft brewing share
In December, Lion, owned by Japan's Kirin, opened its A$60 million Little Creatures brewery in Geelong. The facility incorporates a historic building, the 1920s art deco-style former Valley Worsted Mill, Goodfood.com.au reported on January 15.

The hospitality centre emulates Little Creatures' highly successful brewery-bar-restaurant facility in Fremantle, Western Australia - making it a must-visit for anyone heading down Geelong way during the holiday period.

Lion plans to brew about 1.25 million cases of beer there, principally for east coast markets.

While craft beer accounts for a little over 3 per cent of Australia's beer market, the category is growing at 13 per cent a year. Industry sources put Lion's share of the market at 50 per cent, mainly through its James Squire and Little Creatures brands.

Australian Brewery Extra Hoppy Ale and Weihenstephaner Pilsner are two of Little Creatures brewery craft beers.

Australian Brewery Extra Hoppy Ale – this American-inspired beer, packed in an elegant, slimline can combines masses of hops aromas, flavours and bitterness with opulent, sweet malt and 5.8 per cent alcohol. It won't appeal to those seeking a cold drink on a hot day. But it'll fascinate the hop-obsessed, though the malt-hops harmony needs some work. Weihenstephaner Pilsner – in a ...More info on site

Brewery news Iceland: Whale beer production halted by health authority
The production of the so-called whale beer - the beer that contains whale meal - has been halted after the West Iceland Public Health Authority concluded that the whaling company Hvalur, which teamed up with Icelandic brewery Steðji to make the beer, is not licensed to produce bone meal for edible consumption, Ruv.is reported on January 14. The use of bone meal in food products is also not permitted according to European law.

The beer, which was intended for sale during the mid-winter festival of Þorrablót, contains whale meal, which the manufacturers said is healthy making the beer full of protein, very low in fat and with no added sugar.

The Whale and Dolphin Conservation (WDC) sharply criticized the production of the new beer. “... Reducing a beautiful, sentient whale to an ingredient on the side of a beer bottle is about as immoral and outrageous as it is possible to get,” campaign leader Vanessa Williams-Grey said in a statement.

According to Ruv.is, one kilo of whale meal was used per 2,000 liters of beer.

Brewery news UK & China: British Craft Beers export beer to China
A Nottingham based business has been helping East Midlands microbrewers export their beers to China with the support of The University of Nottingham. The brewing science team from the University have worked with the microbrewers to increase their quality control processes, leading to greater consistency by measuring qualities such as alcohol by volume, CO2, microbial stability and shelf life, Labmate Online reported on January 11.

After a successful beer tasting trip to distributors in China, British Craft Beers has since exported the first orders of beer to merchants in Shanghai and in Chengdu, Sichuan province. The process was drawn together when Clements Marketing won a Food and Drink iNet, European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) funded project to gain a better understanding of the Chinese market, which also included support from the University’s Asia Business Centre and UKTI.

Alan Clements, Managing Director of Clements Marketing, said: “Due to the gradual decline of pubs across the UK and the domination of big brewers in the country, export markets are becoming increasingly attractive to craft brewers, and China is the world’s largest beer market claiming one in every four pints of beer sold globally.”

Research conducted at The University’s Ningbo Campus, China, identified a ...More info on site
