Brewery news Canada, NS: Boxing Rock Brewing Company expands production in Shelburne
The Boxing Rock Brewing Company welcomed new production equipment to their facility in Shelburne on February 3, which will allow them to increase production at the facility by 50%, according to Shelburne County Coastguard.

A 34-hectolitre fermentation tank and associated piping was delivered to the facility late last week. As with the brewery’s 17-hectolitre brewhouse and four existing fermentation tanks, the new tank was fabricated by Diversified Metal Engineering in Prince Edward Island. This tank will expand the brewery’s fermentation capacity and allow them to brew more frequently.

Boxing Rock first opened its doors in July of 2013. This expansion was part of the business plan for the first year of operation, and follows several months of the brewery struggling to keep up with demand for their products.

“We have had a great response from the market to our products - both the bottled product we distribute through the NSLC and private wine stores and our kegs.” says Henry Pedro, Founding Partner of Boxing Rock, “This expansion will allow us to make more of our three year-round products while keeping up with demand for new, innovative seasonal brews.” Emily Tipton, Pedro’s business partner adds, “We are really pleased with ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, FL: Wynwood Brewing Co. to expand in early 2014
The Wynwood Brewing Co., first production microbrewery in the City of Miami, recently announced its plans for expansion in early 2014. The expansion will single-handed triple the brewery’s production capabilities to satisfy the distribution of its brews. After the expansion, the brewery will be producing close to 7000 gallons of beer at a time. The expansion will be finished by April 2014. The brewery will expand at its present location, TheFullPint.com reported on February 3.

WBCo began production in the Wynwood Arts District in Miami in mid August and has been distributing its craft beer, through Brown Distributing, since late September. The company’s beer has gone from being offered at 12 establishments to more than 100 in a matter of three months. The expansion will not only satisfy the need for more production of La Rubia, a blonde ale, Pop’s Porter, and the Wynwood IPA, but will also give the brewery the capabilities to create two more year-round brews for distribution as well as more seasonals throughout the year.

“We are very excited and honored that our craft beers have been so eagerly accepted by local South Florida beer lovers as well as the rest of Florida,” commented founder Luis G. Brignoni. ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, KY: West Sixth Brewing Company expanding in Lexington
West Sixth Brewing, a craft brewery located in Lexington, will undergo a major expansion, The Lane Report announced on February 5.

“When we started West Sixth less than two years ago, we never in a million years expected the amazing response our fans have given us,” said founder Ben Self.

West Sixth Brewing will be expanding into an additional 13,000 s.f.

“This expansion includes the addition of a new 40 barrel brewhouse and six 80 barrel fermenters,” said founder Joe Kuosman. “This will allow us to produce approximately three times the amount of beer that we could before in our previous 15 barrel system. We’ll also keep our 15-barrel system and brew smaller batches on it – which will allow us to explore even further our barrel aging program. Beers like Snakes in a Barrel, our barrel aged imperial stout, are incredibly popular, and we’ll be able to brew an even wider variety of them with this combination of systems.”

In addition to the new brewing equipment, West Sixth has also expanded with a new 1200 s.f. cooler and centrifuge.

This expansion will also allow West Sixth to begin canning its third permanent beer.

“Today, we’re also excited to announce that sometime over the next ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MI: Third Monk Brewing Company to open in South Lyon
If everything goes as planned, Third Monk Brewing Company will open in South Lyon this spring. Owners Darlene Dunlop and Jeff Robinson cleared their first hurdle last month by getting approval from South Lyon City Council, Hometownlife.com reported on February 4.

Robinson said he isn’t walking too far away from his past job as a record producer and recording engineer. “The same care taken creating those hits after countless hours in the studio will be brought to focus on hand-crafting beer for the South Lyon community,” said Robinson, who grew up in Plymouth, moved to Los Angeles and now lives in Salem. He also plans to host local entertainment on weekends focusing on singer-song writers, like South Lyon native Brion Riborn.

They chose South Lyon “for its small-town community and foot traffic,” he said. The target customers are age 25-50 and “anyone who is seeking flavor in their beer,” said Robinson.

“The idea is to help grow the community,” he said. “We look forward to helping connect the dots in the area from business to business.”

The microbrewery will focus on liquid refreshments, and customers will be able to carry-in food from nearby restaurants. Third Monk Brewing Company also plans to deliver direct-to-doorsteps for ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, ON: Lonsbery Brewing Company coming to Colchester
Karl Lonsbery has worked in the wine industry for over a decade, but he’s ready to try his hand at beer, BlackburnNews.com reported on February 1.

Lonsbery plans to launch Lonsbery Brewing Company, brewing beer at his family’s farm in Colchester. He’s working on his business plan now and has submitted his application to the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario.

“I basically have to judge it on the wineries around me. Both Viewpoint and Oxley are on either side of me so their traffic will essentially be my traffic. I’m also speaking with Chris Ryan from Walkerville Brewery, who is helping me along the way.”

It would be the first craft brewery in Essex County. Lonsbery will grow all of the ingredients for his beer on the farm and plans to open a restaurant on site. He hopes to open sometime this summer.

Brewery news USA, VA: Craft brewery and alehouse to open in Woodstock this summer
A historic Woodstock will see its next life as a craft brewery and alehouse. Amassing 3,000 square feet on each of its two floors, the brewery could open to the public as early as this summer, Northern Virginia Daily reported on January 31.

The first level will store the brewing equipment. The second level will house a tasting room for visitors and could host special events in its banquet area, seating up to 80 people.

Along with seven partners, Woodstock Brewing Company Owner Karl Roulston said he hopes to "give the building a second chance."

"I think we all felt that it would help with the Downtown Woodstock area," he said. "There's kind of been a lot of shops closing and going places, so we would like to contribute to bring people back to that downtown area."

According to Roulston, a single batch at the brewery would produce about 300 gallons of beer. He said the company will start with these individual batches and brew more in response to demand.

He said they'll start hand-bottling some of their beers, but mostly will serve them out of kegs at the brewery.

"We think the fun part will be having people come into this facility and if they ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, TN: St. Elmo Brewing Company closed, working to meet city requirements
The owner and lead brewer of Moccasin Bend Brewing Co. said he is confident he will be able to reopen the brewery after he met with city officials this week to work out a plan to address safety concerns that prompted the abrupt closure of the business in St. Elmo on January 31, according to Chattanooga Times Free Press.

“I think everyone wants the best outcome,” Chris Hunt said.

Hunt and city officials met to develop plans to fix safety issues and discuss what sort of establishment the owners would like MBBC to be to determine what sort of permit is needed, said Jeff Cannon, chief operating officer for the city of Chattanooga.

Because of the brewery’s occupancy requirements and a “heavily advertised event” that drew a large crowd and the attention of city officials, MBBC was shut down Friday, January 31 following a surprise inspection by safety inspectors with the city fire marshal’s office, Cannon said.

Hunt said that he hopes to have immediate issues addressed in time to appear before the next Beer and Wrecker Board meeting in February and be able to reopen in a few weeks.

According to the fire marshal’s report, some of the immediate issues that must be addressed ...More info on site

Barley news UK: Rise in demand for whisky determining spring barley varieties choice
The rapid rise in demand for malting barley by the Scottish whisky distilling industry is having an effect on the choice of spring barley varieties across Britain, Farmers Weekly reported on February 3.

Spring barley variety Propino is set to be the most popular this season although dual-purpose malting varieties look likely to gain in the coming years.

The variety is a favourite with the maltsters supplying brewers and could take nearly a quarter of the spring barley area, but varieties that can be used for brewing and whisky distilling are gaining popularity.

Barry Barker, national arable seeds product manager at distributor Agrii, says the variety is a clear favourite with the maltsters supplying the brewing industry.

“This spring, Propino will be the biggest variety, but dual-purpose varieties will become more important in the next couple of years,” he said.

Mr Barker expects the variety may take nearly 25% of the spring barley certified seed area drilled this season in the UK, up from just under a fifth of the market in 2013, helped by brewing demand and export.

In England, its share is likely to rise to about 30% from 25% as it takes market share from older malting types used in the brewing industry, ...More info on site

Brewery news Nigeria: Nigerian Breweries dismisses rumours of incentives to distributors and retail-shop owners
Nigerian Breweries plc has dismissed rumours making the rounds in the South-Eastern part of the country that it had budgeted N500 million for incentives to distributors and retail-shop owners, with a view to frustrating sales of Hero Lager beer produced by SABMiller plc, Business Day reported on February 3.

Vindah Edem, corporate media and brand public relations officer, NB, said it was impossible for NB to engage in such an unwholesome practice, having attained a reputable status in the industry.

“As a pioneer and leader, we believe in winning by competing fairly. Our long-lasting market leadership over the years has been based on consistent innovation to delight consumers with superior brands and programmes across multiple categories,’’ he said.

In the meantime, SABMiller has continued to invest hugely to compete favourably in the growing beer market. The world’s second largest brewery has concluded plans to invest $110 million in Onitsha brewery, owing to the success recorded by Hero Lager beer so far.

The Onitsha brewery has an annual production capacity of 700, 000 hectolitres, and ongoing expansion programmes in the company is expected to increase the figure to more than three folds, according to sources. It is also expected to increase the number of employees ...More info on site

Brewery news China & Australia: Tsingtao launches new campaign to broaden appeal with Australian consumers
China's Tsingtao beer has launched a new campaign designed to broaden its appeal with Australian beer drinkers, The Shout reported on February 5.

The ‘Tsingtaoism’ campaign was launched in Australia to coincide with the Chinese New Year Festival through a series of billboards shot at Sydney’s iconic Bondi Beach, specifically tailored to make the international brand more relevant to the local market.

“Tsingtao aims to have Australians not only enjoy the beer at the Yum Cha table, but in other social environments such as barbeques and bars,” explained Mike O’Rourke, creative director at Bloke, the agency behind the new campaign.

“The concept of Tsigntaoism is all about friendship, social interaction, and enjoying yourself. The theme was evident throughout the campaign, even early on with the photo shoot down at Bondi Beach, with locals and backpackers engaged together, which supports Tsingtaoism.”
