Hops against Alzheimer disease!

ABSTRACT
Japanese researchers have screened more than 1600 plants used in Chinese medicine to see if any of these could be used to treat the Alzheimer disease, which is the most frequently observed neurodegenerative disorder in Japan and other advanced countries. Guess what they found as a promising plant - hops! It is generally accepted that Alzheimer disease is caused by a certain protein (Aβ) and the production of this protein was inhibited by a hops extract. A major component resulting in the inhibitory activity was purified, and its chemical identity was determined to be Garcinielliptone HC. For the experiments, model mice with Alzheimer disease with hop extracts consumed daily in their drinking water showed significant mitigation of memory impairment at ages of 9 and 12 months. Moreover, oral administration of hop extracts also prevented an emotional disturbance. Despite lifelong consumption of hop extracts, no deleterious side effects were observed at any age. So if you don't forget your daily share of hops you won't forget anything any longer.

Brewery news USA: All signs point to continued craft beer industry success
Craft beer production was up 9.6 percent in 2013, while overall beer production fell 1.4 percent, according to Technomic's "2014 Special Trends in Adult Beverage Report: State of the Industry" report. And that continued popularity of specialty beers is paving the way for a new crop of beer makers, CNBC.com reported on March 2.

"Over the last couple of years, the number of new brewery openings has been at near unprecedented levels," said Bart Watson, Ph.D., staff economist at Brewers Association, a craft beer industry group. "We're seeing breweries open at about a rate of 1.2 per day."

While the 1990s and early 2000s saw a big rise in brew pubs, the trend today leans more toward microbreweries that aim to distribute their product. That puts them up against the giants of the beer industry—like Anheuser-Busch and Molson Coors—as well as national craft brewers who are nearly as well known, including Boston Beer Co., maker of Samuel Adams, and privately held Sierra Nevada.

Craft breweries have a few things working in their favor, perhaps the most important of which is a customer base that's financially well off. Nielsen reports that 58.9 percent of craft beer drinkers have annual incomes of $75,000 or more. ...More info on site

Brewery news UK: Heineken unveils new products in Foster’s Radler portfolio
Heineken has unveiled new additions to its Foster’s Radler portfolio, helping to fulfil the rising demand for lower-strength beer on lighter drinking occasions, Talking Retail reported on March 3.

Taking its name from the German word for “cyclist”, Radler is a beer-based drink dating back to the 1920’s when cyclists would drink the mixed beer in the mountains when stopping for a rest.

Since its debut last spring, total sales of 2% ABV Foster’s Radler cut with Cloudy Lemon have topped 17 million bottles. Building on the brand’s success and the increasing relevancy of the moderation category to young adult consumers, Heineken is introducing two new variants from March.

The expanded range will include new 2% ABV Foster’s Radler with ‘Lime & Ginger’ and a 0.0%ABV version of the original Foster’s Radler. In addition, the brand will be available in new 440 ml cans to tap into the demand for easier formats for on-the-move moderation occasions.

Fuelled by this authenticity and heritage, Radler-style beers have grown in popularity across Europe, where national mainstream lager brands have introduced variants in Belgium, Poland, Hungary, Austria and Croatia. Heineken was first to market in the UK with the original Foster’s Radler in 2013.

The moderation category is enjoying ...More info on site

Brewery news UK: British beer exports to Russia, Brazil, China increase last year
Almost 21 million extra pints of British beer were exported in 2013 compared to the previous year, Government statistics as reported by Morning Advertiser show. In total, 1.15 billion pints were exported in 2013, with notable growth in exports to Russia (+45%), Brazil (+37%) and China (+15%).

The figures have been revealed as the British Beer & Pub Association (BBPA) and National Association of Cidermakers, working with Government agency UK Trade and Investment, formally publish a new strategy to grow beer and cider exports in 2014 and 2015.

The strategy aims to deliver sustainable growth to the British beer and cider industry by, boost exports and reduce trade barriers.

British beer exports are currently worth £629 mln to the UK and exports outside the EU have grown by 46.2% in volume since 2008 and 69.4% by value.

BBPA chief executive Brigid Simmonds said: “Britain produces some of the finest beers; many in styles unique to these shores. It is an iconic product produced by a world class industry, with real opportunities for export growth which this strategy will help to deliver. “Rising British exports are key to economic recovery and beer clearly has an important part to play.”

Brewery news USA: Beer sales overall still on the way down but things look better when craft beer comes into the picture
While the Beer Institute industry lobbying group notes that January beer sales were up 0.7% from the same month last year, the fact is that beer sales overall are still on the way down. The Treasury Department's Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau reported a 1.5% decrease in overall beer sales and a 2.6-million barrel loss in beer production. That's basically akin to shutting down Boston Beer's Samuel Adams brand (which produced 2.7 million barrels in 2012) for an entire year, The Street reported on March 4.

Yet the analysts at Moody's decided to look on the bright side when assessing the big beer picture for 2014. Maybe U.S. beer consumption by volume has dropped in four of the past five years, thanks largely to Anheuser-Busch InBev and SABMiller/MolsonCoors joint venture MillerCoors selling a lot less light lager. Maybe that same downturn reduced beer's share of the overall alcohol market from 55% in 2000 to 49% in 2012. But that's not so bad when craft beer volume increased by an estimated 15% last year, industry observers point out.

"Major brewers Anheuser-Busch InBev and MillerCoors have captured more than 18% of the U.S. craft market combined with brands like Blue Moon, Shock ...More info on site

Brewery news USA: AB InBev adds two new flavours to Bud Light Lime Ritas range
Beer major AB InBev has expanded the portfolio of its Bud Light Lime Ritas with two new flavors - Mang-O-Rita and Raz-Ber-Rita, Drinks Business Review reported on March 4.

Lime-A-Rita, Straw-Ber-Rita and seasonal Cran-Brrr-Rita are the other three existing flavors in the Bud Light Lime Ritas range.

With 8% ABV, the new flavored malt beverages offer Bud Light Lime refreshment with the taste of mango and raspberry margaritas.

The company is offering Mang-O-Rita and Raz-Ber-Rita flavors for sale in three pack sizes including, 12-pack 8oz cans; four-pack 16oz cans; and 24oz individual cans.

AB InBev has also introduced a four-flavor Mix-A-Rita 18-pack to encourage mixology.

All the flavors are also available in a Mix-A-Rita 18-pack, which includes six Lime-A-Ritas, four Straw-Ber-Ritas, four Mang-O-Ritas and four Raz-Ber-Ritas.

Bud Light vice president Rob McCarthy said they anticipate Raz-Ber-Rita and Mang-O-Rita to continue extending the brand into the popular margarita space.

"With four permanent Rita flavors to choose from, and our new convenient mixed pack featuring them all, we're excited to see consumers experiment and create their own "Mix-A-Rita" combinations," McCarthy added.

Brewery news UK: Heineken is expanding its booming Desperados brand, adds mojito-flavoured Verde
Rolling out this month in 330 ml bottles, 4.7% abv Desperados Verde is a mojito-flavoured variant that mixes the original drink’s tequila flavour with a hint of mint and lime. Aimed at 18 to 34-year-olds, it was designed to tap into demand for sweeter flavours and lighter tastes, The Grocer quoted Heineken on March 2.

“Palates are changing,” said Heineken off-trade MD Martin Porter. “We have seen an explosion of flavour innovation across cider and spirits, and are beginning to witness a similar pattern with flavoured beers.”

The flavoured beer category could hit £200 mln by 2016, said Heineken, and had grown 147% over the past year to £30 mln [IRI 52 w/e 7 December 2013].

Desperados accounts for around two-thirds of the market, and had soared 171% to £22.3 mln [IRI 52 w/e 1 February 2014]. The brewer brought UK distribution of Desperados in-house in 2012 and invested heavily to increase distribution.

Other spirit beer players include SHS Drinks and Global Brands, which has rolled out bourbon-flavoured beer Buddy’s in a new 500 ml format to Tesco stores in recent weeks.

Mintel senior drinks analyst Chris Wisson said there was “no reason” why other major drinks suppliers wouldn’t follow suit and expand ...More info on site

Brewery news Namibia & Tanzania: Namibian premium beer launches on Tanzanian market
The new beer brand with a unique back label for Tanzania, brewed and bottled by Namibia Breweries Limited, was launched officially over the weekend at Hyatt Hotel Kilimanjaro and later at Golden Tulip in Dar es Salaam, Daily News reported on March 3.

As in the case of Windhoek Premium Lager beer, Namibia Breweries Limited has entered an exclusive agreement with Mabibo to import and distribute Windhoek Draught in the country.

For that matter, Mabibo would be the sole importer and distributor of the new beer brand in Tanzania.

Windhoek Draught is premium quality and natural beer brewed using only the finest imported ingredients.

Mabibo Executive Chairperson, Benadicta Rugemalira, told the fully-packed ceremony that her company was determined to offer best services, but warned unscrupulous businesspeople from infringing the company’s exclusive rights.

“We are facing a lot of challenges in this business, including some untrustworthy businesspeople smuggling Windhoek beers from South Africa without paying tax.

“We are not going to tolerate them and we will not allow this unbecoming behaviour,” she warned.

Mabibo’s boss pointed out that smuggling behaviours have hindered her company from implementing its long plans of brewing Windhoek beers locally.

“We appeal for your support so that we could fulfil our ambitious mission. Brewing ...More info on site
