Pesticide residues and nitrate in dry-hopped beers

ABSTRACT
Until now it was unclear if dry-hopping has an impact on the nitrate and pesticide residues transfer from hops into beer. German researchers performed extensive dry-hopping trials and monitored the nitrate and pesticides levels throughout the process. The results show that nitrate is transferred quantitatively, which means that depending on variety and amount, the final values vary between 3-90 mg/l. Comparing those values with different foods where nitrate is found in a range of 40-8000 mg/l dry-hopped beers can be considered of very little concern. And also the monitored pesticides did not increase with dryhopping, although up to 500g of hops/hL were used.

Brewery news USA: MillerCoors sees promising numbers for its Miller Lite can sales
While MillerCoors isn't claiming victory just yet on the impact that the Miller Lite throwback-style packaging has had on overall brand sales, the numbers so far are promising for Miller Lite can sales and the company has extended the availability of its packaging through Sept. 30, Milwaukee Business Journal reported on March 24.

Miller Lite can sales have increased more than 4.7 percent this year through March 1. During the week ended Feb. 22, Miller Lite’s change in share of total U.S. beer sales (for cans) from the same week one year ago increased by 0.24 percent. This was the first time Miler Lite can sales gained share since March 2013. Still, overall brand sales are down 2 percent, according to Nielsen data.

Jonathan Stern, director of media relations for MillerCoors, said re-introducing the original can caught the attention of millennial beer drinkers.

“Since millennial beer drinkers are into authenticity and heritage, and with Miller Lite being the original light beer, we believe this is causing a lot of interest," Stern said.

Tom Long, MillerCoors chief executive officer, admitted in a Nov. 6 earnings release that the company was “not satisfied with the on-premise distribution or volume performance” of the premium light brands.

Brewery news USA, PA: Tired Hands Brewing Company expanding with a new facility in Ardmore
Tired Hands Brewing Company in Ardmore has anounced they are expanding with a new production facility, Main Line reported on March 21.

Would Jean Broillet, founder and master brewer of Tired Hands Brewing Co., have imagined that, less than two years after opening his brew-café he would be planning a major expansion?

“No, not at all,” he said. He recalls that, in meetings with investors then, “The question came up, ‘What comes next, Jean?’” His answer would have been that the fledgling business “is special because it’s in a place that’s special.” He and his wife had decided, “We will put our entire being into this.”

“That lasted about a year,” he adds.

What has opened up the view is that, in the meantime, the café has become a wildly popular destination for craft brew enthusiasts. “We are full all the time,” Broillet said. Fans line up around the building, those growlers in hand, for a new beer release.

So here Broillet is on a brink-of-spring morning, having just signed the lease on a second location that will serve as a production facility for up to 10,000 barrels a year of his “strange and beautiful beers,” as well as a second brew-café that he ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, LA: Great Raft Brewing to expand distribution to Northeast Louisiana
Great Raft Brewing located in Shreveport, LA will partner with restaurant and bar partners to expand the distribution of its three flagship beers to Northeast Louisiana, beginning 24 March 2014, according to Drinks Business Review .

The three flagship beers are Reasonably Corrupt black lager, Southern Drawl pale lager, and Commotion American pale ale.

Great Raft Brewing co-founder and president Andrew Nations said that it is important for the company to work with locally owned bars and restaurants to introduce its products.

"We not only want to work with craft-friendly establishments, but also want to partner with other small businesses in order to help celebrate the uniqueness of the local North Louisiana community," Nations added.

In addition, the brewery will also partner with Louisiana distributor, Marsala Beverage, to distribute its beers on draft and in cans to additional local bars and restaurants later in March 2014.

Founded in October 2013, Great Raft Brewing is the ninth production brewery in Louisiana.

Brewery news USA, CT: Stubborn Beauty Brewing Company opens newest brewery in Connecticut
Connecticut's newest brewery opened March 1, drawing a steady stream of weekend visitors so far despite its out-of-the-way location in a former factory building in the city's North End, Hartford Courant reported on March 25.

Stubborn Beauty Brewing Company owners Andrew Daigle and Shane Lentini, who met in high school in New Britain, have been brewing beer together for about six years. They offer free Saturday afternoon tastings and sell large and small growlers of their unique beers.

"We don't really follow style guidelines," Lentini said.

The beers have unique names and flavors – the Kommandant Lassard dunkelweizen, for example, has a banana aroma and a rich chocolate flavor. The Speaking In Tongues black IPA is a hybrid of a hoppy dark IPA and a stout.

"The response has been really good so far," Lentini said. "Everyone has been extremely supportive since we opened. It's a great area."

The two brewers went from amateurs to professionals a year ago. After deciding they wanted to try brewing as something more than a hobby, they started making several batches at a time to enter in beer festivals in the area.

Lentini, 37, works in information technology for a company in Enfield. Daigle, 37, is an MRI technologist ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, ON: Second Wedge Brewing to open in Uxbridge
A husband and wife team are aiming to open a new brewery in the small town of Uxbridge in Ontario’s Durham Region, Canadian Beer News reported on March 25.

Rob Garrard and Joanne Richter are looking at a former Sears store in the centre of downtown Uxbridge as a location for Second Wedge Brewing, named after the town’s location on the second of four wedges of the Oak Ridges Moraine.

The couple has been doing research and working on a business plan for more than a year, and presented their concept to community councillors at a committee meeting last week. They’ve also procured the services of a brewmaster who they haven’t announced publicly, but who has worked at a variety of Ontario breweries over the years including Mill Street, Upper Canada and Kawartha Lakes.

If all proceeds as planned, Garrard and Richter intend to have Second Wedge up and running by the end of this year or early in 2015, concentrating on draught and on-site sales initially, with LCBO distribution to follow at a later date.

Brewery news USA, IL: Penrose Brewing Company coming to Geneva
Art, science and some Belgium inspiration have come together in the form of the area’s latest craft brews by newcomer Penrose Brewing Co. Penrose Brewing opened in mid-March near downtown Geneva. The new brewery has a tap room that is open to the public and offers beer on tap for patrons to purchase, Aurora Beacon News reported on March 24.

“Our tap room is the best way to come and experience the beers of Penrose,” said co-owner Eric Hobbs, who opened the brewing company with Tom Korder, of Batavia.

Hobbs, 33, of Geneva, said that he and Korder worked on the concept for about three years before opening to the public. They serve direct at their tap room, and sell locally through a wholesaler.

A variety of their beers were showcased on March 19 at 10 Geneva bars and restaurants for Penrose Brewing’s Tap the Town event. The next night, Hobbs and Korder hosted another tasting event at Gammon Coach House in Batavia.

Hobbs and Korder both have experience in the beer world as former Goose Island managers. The plan for Penrose Brewing is to start with local distribution through Windy City Distribution and then grow it from there, Hobbs said.

Hobbs said they ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CO: Liquid Mechanics Brewing plans to open in Lafayette in 2015
If all goes as planned, Liquid Mechanics Brewing Co. will become Lafayette's fourth new craft brewery in a little more than a year when it opens in late summer, Boulder County Business Report reported on March 25.

The brewery's founders have quietly been building out their 3,200-square-foot space in the Village at Lafayette shopping center. But they'd been waiting to formally announce their plans until they finalized financing and notified their current employers they'd be leaving.

When Liquid Mechanics opens, it will join Front Range Brewing and Odd13 Brewing, which both opened last summer. The Post Brewing Co., meanwhile, opened in January to round out Lafayette's bursting beer scene.

"We really love Lafayette," co-founder Davin Helden said on March 24. "We're excited to be the new face on the block."

Helden is founding the brewery with Seth Townsend and Eric Briggs. Townsend, a longtime home brewer, will serve as brewmaster.

The trio first started hatching their brewery plans about six years ago while all worked together at biopharmaceutical company Amgen in Longmont and Boulder. All three will begin devoting their full attention to the brewery May 1.

"We all kind of grew up in manufacturing at Amgen," Helden said.

Helden declined ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NC: Sugar Creek Brewing coming to Charlotte this summer
A new Belgian-inspired craft brewery plans to open in Charlotte this summer in the soon-to-be former home of Olde Mecklenburg Brewery, Charlotte Business Journal reported on March 24.

Sugar Creek Brewing Co., headed by Joe Vogelbacher and Eric Flanigan, has signed a lease for the 30,000-square-foot property. Olde Mecklenburg Brewery is relocating to a nearby property it purchased last year after the city made a change in zoning rules to boost the growing industry.

Vogelbacher is a Charlotte native who moved away after graduating from college. Now he’s moving back to Charlotte to launch Sugar Creek with Flanigan, an old friend who is a general manager at Whisky River.

Vogelbacher says Sugar Creek’s beer menu will likely include a Belgian-style pale ale as well as a Saison, Dubbel and perhaps a fruit beer as well.

“In my opinion, the characters that the Belgian beers have can rival even the best wines,” he says. “They just have a long, rich history. We’re going to aspire to take the best from there and infuse it with our own American ingredients.”

Sugar Creek is purchasing on-site brewing equipment from Olde Mecklenburg and will make some interior renovations to put its own stamp on the taproom.

“When we ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, TX: Nine-Band Brewing Company coming to Allen
Nine-Band Brewing Co., owned by Keith Ashley, started on March 26 development on its showroom and craft brewery in Allen, Dallas Business Journal reported on March 24.

The 8,100-square-foot building will serve as Allen's first microbrewery when it opens this summer. The brewery was named after the nine-banded armadillo found in North America.

"I'd love to say we're going to be the biggest brewery in the United States," said Ashley, who selected Allen based on its demographics and proximity to Dallas. "Everyone feels like Shiner is the craft beer in Texas and we'd like to produce 40 percent of their volume in the next five years."

Ashley plans to model Nine-Band Brewing Co.'s expansion after the Shiner Bock brewery that distributes in 39 states, but he says he plans to start local in North Texas. About 40 percent of Shiner's business is roughly 50,000 to 70,000 barrels per year.

The brewery received a $75,000 economic incentive in multiple installments over time for locating the brewery to Allen, said Dan Bowman, the interim executive director and CEO of Allen Economic Development.

Brewery news USA, NY: Flying Bison Brewing Company breaks ground on new brewery in Buffalo
Work started on March 21 on Buffalo's newest brewery. Flying Bison Brewing Company broke ground on its new home in the city's Larkinville neighborhood. Flying Bison founder Tim Herzog says he is shooting to open by mid July, WBFO reported.

"There will be a beer garden, a nice patio where people can come and enjoy the day, take a tour of the brewery, sample the beer and see what it is that we do. There will be a glass wall between the sampling area and the production area so they can come really see what we're doing," Herzog said at a groundbreaking.

Herzog says the new brewery is going up on the site of a former barrel house for the old William Simon Brewing Company, which was just six blocks away.

Herzog says back in 2000 when Flying Bison was one of only three breweries in the area, he never envisioned craft beer would become so popular. He says by the end of the year, there will be eight more.

"I think it's safe to say that people in Buffalo like beer," he said.

Brewery news Canada, ON: Dominion City Brewing Company adds its business to Ontario craft scene
Two years ago Josh McJannett, Andrew Kent and Alex Monk, co-owners of Dominion City Brewing Company, decided to turn their hobby for making beer into a business. In January the three friends took over factory space in Ontario and McJannett says they hope to open a brewery in early summer, Ottawa Citizen reported on March 23.

“There’s not a lot of sleep, but it’s what we want to be doing,” McJannett says. “It’s an adventure.”

It’s clear McJannett loves the craft, explaining with exuberance each step of the brewing process, the specially selected ingredients for Dominion City’s three inaugural brews and their go-local focus for the grains and hops they’ll buy. But as much as he’s excited about his brand, McJannett says something bigger than their brew is going on in Ottawa.

“I think it’s not an overstatement to say that we are the national capital of craft beer,” McJannett says. “I know that’ll be controversial in Vancouver or parts of Quebec, but I think what’s going on here with the folks who are already out there brewing, and what’s coming is some of most exciting beer in the country. People are quality focused, but they’re experimenting and pushing boundaries.

McJannett says the company ...More info on site

Brewery news Brazil: Ambev starts brewing Budweiser in the state of Rio de Janeiro
Ambev, Brazil’s largest beer maker and part of the world’s No. 1 brewer AB InBev, on March 21 inaugurated two new production lines for Budweiser beer at its brewery in Pirai (Rio de Janeiro), Folha Vale do Café reports.

The plant, purchased by the company in 2007, will become Ambev’s second facility to produce the global brand in Brazil.

Budweiser was launched in Brazil in 2011 and until now has been produced at Ambev’s Jacarei brewery in the state of Sao Paulo.

Owing to an investment of R$165 mln, the Pirai brewery has installed two lines dedicated solely to production of Budweiser. Over the last five years, the company invested a total of R$ 455 mln in the facility.

Barley news Australia: Barley Australia accredits three new varieties as malting barley
The Board of Barley Australia has announced the successful accreditation of three new varieties:

Macquarie (TI677) Wimmera (VB 0432) Admiral (WI 4259)

These varieties were accredited as Malting Barley following the evaluation trials conducted in association with the Malting and Brewing Barley Technical Committee assessment under the malting barley evaluation process.

It should be noted that Macquarie, whilst meeting the evaluation criteria for malting barley accreditation, is considered to have limited potential for grower uptake and market demand, given the availability of other more widely-adapted varieties. Accordingly, Macquarie will be acknowledged as an Accredited Variety, but not a Preferred Variety on the Barley Australia website.

Wimmera is a medium rainfall variety and is likely to suit export malt markets with medium to high fermentability requirements.

Admiral is suited to a wide area of medium rainfall across Australia. It should be noted that the VT prefix for Admiral in its trial stages has been dropped and it is known as Admiral barley. It is aimed at export markets requiring high DP and high fermentability.

As with all previous accreditations, it is the market that will determine the success of these new varieties. The Barley Australia malting barley evaluation and accreditation process is recognized as the required standard ...More info on site

Brewery news UK: Beer duty cut by one pence per pint in the new Budget
UK beer duty will be cut by one pence per pint, the chancellor of the exchequer George Osborne announced last week.

The Budget was announced in the House of Commons on March 19 which saw a huge cheer erupt as the chancellor confirmed that beer duty would be cut by one pence per pint, while duty on cider has been frozen.

It is the second cut to beer duty in as many years.

Brigid Simmonds, British Beer and Pub Association (BBPA) chief executive, said: “This is fantastic news, and George Osborne is again the toast of Britain’s brewers, pubs and pubgoers. It will protect over 7,000 jobs over two years, mostly jobs of younger people in Britain’s pubs.

“It also shows that the Government has understood our case, that taxes on British beer had become far too high, and action was long overdue.

“I hope this becomes a trend in future budgets for this British-made, lower-strength drink.”

Julian Grocock, chief executive of the Society of Independent Brewers (SIBA) said, “SIBA applauds the Chancellor’s decision to take another penny off the pint, following last year’s historic decision to scrap the unpopular escalator. It is good to see that this government believes in providing long-term support for the ...More info on site

Brewery news Myanmar: Alcohol consumption rising in Myanmar
The rate of alcohol consumption is rising in Myanmar, with local production of beer, wine and spirits at more than 25 million gallons annually, according to the local reports.

Tens of thousands of gallons of wine, beer, and hard alcohol—both legal and illegal—are being imported from foreign countries and are now penetrating the local market.

There are state-owned beer and wine factories in Myanmar, but the Myanmar Investment Commission has also allowed permits for foreign beer companies to operate here, subject to scrutiny by respective state and regional government authorities.

Barley news Australia: Australia poised to become a major supplier of new barley variety extending shelf life of beer
Australia is poised to become a major global supplier of a new variety of barley that extends the shelf life of beer, ABC Online reported on March 23.

The variety, called Charger, slows down how quickly the beer deteriorates and develops a stale papery flavour.

Charger is owned by European brewing companies Carlsberg and Heineken and was developed with researchers from the University of Adelaide.

"You can actually expect at least a 50 per cent longer freshness of the beer," Carlsberg's director of applied research Birgitte Skadhauge said.

"It is something that's having a significant impact on the quality of the beer, especially in warm climates like you have here in Australia."

The secret to Charger's longer-lasting influence is that one of the enzymes in it does not work properly.

That enzyme is called lipoxygenase, and during malting it converts lipids and fats in the grain into the stale flavour.

Carlsberg screened more than 15,000 barley lines before it found one with the "lazy" lipoxygenase enzymes it was looking for.

That trait is known as Null Lox and it has been bred into several barley varieties grown overseas and used in beer sold in Europe.

Charger is the Australian version.

"We are actually transferring, to some degree, European genetic backgrounds ...More info on site

Brewery news Zambia: Zambian Breweries announces beer price hikes
Zambian Breweries Plc announced increases of between 3.6 and 19% in the recommended retail price of its clear beer alcoholic beverages on its non-returnable bottle packs and the sorghum-brewed Eagle lager effective as from 24th March, Zambian Watchdog reported.

Making the announcement, Company Managing Director Anele Malumo explained that the increases are a combined result of inflation and the 50% increase in Excise Duty on clear beer from 40% to 60% that the government implemented as part of the 2014 National Budget.

Mr Malumo said Zambian Breweries has until now absorbed the excise increase on its non-returnable packs in order to mitigate the smuggling that would have resulted from having higher beer prices relative to regional peers.

He stated that the company has however noted that the increased excise duty has been an added direct cost to the non returnable bottle product types and has detrimentally affected company profitability.

And Mr Malumo said with the excise-induced increase in prices on its beer products, Zambian Breweries Plc has since January 2014 witnessed a decrease in monthly beer sales volumes from prior levels due to consumer price elasticity.

He said consequently, the company anticipates that its total tax remittances to Government will decrease in tandem compared to ...More info on site

Brewery news Ethiopia: Bedele Beer to be available in steel coated cans for the first time in the country’s beer history
For the first time in Ethiopia’s beer production trend, Bedele Beer, under the Netherlands’ beer giant, Heineken, has become the first locally made beer brand to reach its customers with steel coated cans, EthioSports reported on March 22.

Various types of liquor products with aluminum or steel-coated packages such as beer, beverages, juice, soft drinks or even alcoholic drinks have been common in the international market. It has, however, not been available for locally produced products.

Numerous microbrewers are now offering their products in cans throughout the world.

The drinks and beverage production sector is one of the highly privileged areas among the manufacturing sector that has been identified as one of the government’s most prioritized sectors listed under the five-year Growth and Transformation Plan (GTP).

Beer producers and beverage companies face a shortage of bottles as the nation only has one single glass and bottle factory. Due to this shortage, most beverage companies are shifting to packaging their produces in plastic bottles.
