Are hops the solution to gushing?

ABSTRACT
Wouldn't it be great to have a solution to gushing made of a raw material that goes into beer anyway? Well, hops possibly contain what we are looking for. These Belgian researchers tested a hop-based antifoam (normally used during fermentation to increase tank capacity by surpressing foam development) to evaluate its gushing surpressing properties. Though the hop anti-foam tested very successfully in a model solution and also in wort, when tested in gushing positive beers the gushing surpressing activity was not confirmed. The composition of the hop aid antifoam might explain why it can be effective, since it is a combination of saturated and unsaturated, long and rather short fatty acids. The theory is that because hop antifoam molecules are hydrophobic, they interact with hydrophobins (proteins made responsible for gushing through the creation of microbubbles) and therefore inhibit the development of the gushing inducing microbubbles. Still many questions are not answered and this project will continue.

Brewery news Canada: Molson Coors and Miller Brewing back to court in battle over Canadian distribution of several Miller beer brands
Molson Coors and Miller Brewing Co. are heading back to court in their battle over the Canadian distribution rights for several bands of Miller beer after talks to reach an out-of-court settlement fell through, The Canadian Press reported on April 15.

The dispute between Molson Coors and Miller Brewing Co. follows an attempt by Miller to terminate its longtime Canadian licensing agreement with Molson Coors.

“The parties have been engaged in settlement discussions but have been unable to reach a settlement at this time,” a spokesman for Molson Coors said in a brief email statement on April 15.

“Therefore, we are asking the court to schedule a trial date for the matter to be heard.”

The talks followed a legal skirmish last June when an Ontario court issued a temporary injunction blocking Miller from terminating the agreement, which covers such well-known brands as Millers Genuine Draft, Miller Lite and Miller High Life.

Miller has said it wants to develop the brands in Canada on its own. It intended to terminate the agreement with Molson Coors effective July 22, saying it had given the required six-month notification.

However, Molson Coors Canada filed suit to prevent the move, saying it planned on “strongly defending our rights to ...More info on site

Brewery news India: Molson Coors Cobra India launces new strong beer
Molson Coors Cobra India brewery has launched a strong beer, Royal Brew, within months of bringing in British beer Carling, continuing to widen its product range aggressively in a high potential market, Economic Times reported on April 14.

The joint venture between US-based Molson Coors Brewing Company and the Cobra Indian Beer already markets two strong beer brands, King Cobra and Iceberg 9,000, besides Cobra premium beer, all brewed in its plant near Patna. It imports Carling.

"Our experience of the Indian market says that the consumer here prefers hard liquor over light. We have been facing competition from hard liquor such as whiskey. So we decided to launch a product in the strong beer segment," Peter H Coors, chairman at Molson Coors Company, said.

He said the strong beer would cater to customer demand in Bihar, Punjab, Haryana, Bengal and Delhi.

After the stagnation of growth in developed markets such as the US and the UK, Molson Coors plans to shift its focus to emerging markets. "Favorable demographics, coupled with increasing focus of foreign brewers on product range and rising social acceptance of alcohol are expected to enable beer demand to grow swiftly in years to come," Coors said. He said the Indian ...More info on site

Brewery news Bulgaria: Members of Union of Brewers in Bulgaria invest BGN 264 mln in 5 years
Union of Brewers in Bulgaria invested BGN 264 mln over the past 5 years, Focus reported on April 14.

“Investments made by the members of the Union of Brewers in Bulgaria over the past five years amount to BGN 264 million,” said Ivana Radomirova, executive director of the Union of Brewers in Bulgaria in an interview.

According to Radomirova, only in 2013 the investments made by the union’s members are estimated at BGN 56,504,000.

“These are investments in long-term material assets, which secured improvement and modernisation of the existing capacities and technologies for beer and malt production in the sector,” Radomirova remarked.

Brewery news World: The Brewers Association announces the 2014 World Beer Cup Awards winners
The Brewers Association (BA) announced on April 11 the results of one of the largest commercial beer competitions to date, the 2014 World Beer Cup Awards. The awards were presented at the conclusion of Craft Brewers Conference & BrewExpo America® in Denver, Colo.

Drawing the highest number of entries to date, this edition of the World Beer Cup saw 4,754 beers from 1,403 breweries representing 58 countries—a 21 percent increase in the number of entries from the 2012 World Beer Cup, which had 3,921 entries.

Brewers from five continents earned awards from an elite international panel of judges at this tenth biennial competition, with brewers from 22 countries—ranging from Australia and Brazil to Taiwan and the United Kingdom—honored. Judges awarded 281 out of 282 total possible awards, reflecting the chance for one gold, one silver and one bronze award in each of 94 beer style categories.

This year's event was particularly competitive; the proportion of winning breweries winning one or more awards was 18 percent, compared to 27 percent in 2012. There was a 75.6 percent increase in breweries competing this year versus 2012, which had 799 breweries that entered beers in the competition. A total of 253 breweries took home awards in ...More info on site

Brewery news South Korea & China: Korean beer exports to China aided by interest in Korean drama series
Korean beer exports to China have shot up over the past year with analysts attributing the spike to the popularity of Korean drama series in Asia's largest economy, Arirang News reported on April 14.

Korea's Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs says beer exports in March rose by over two-hundred percent compared to the same period last year, to over one-million U.S. dollars.

A ministry official says the growth was driven by the popularity of home delivered fried chicken and beer sets that were popularized by a recent Korean drama show.

Meanwhile, total agricultural exports to China last month jumped nearly seven-and-a-half percent from the same month last year.

Brewery news Japan: Kirin Brewery to offer premium version of its Ichiban Shibori beer
Kirin Brewery Co. will start offering a premium high-quality version of its mainstay Ichiban Shibori beer on June 11 for sale exclusively as chugen summer gifts and seibo year-end gifts, The Japan News reported on April 16.

The move by the Kirin Holdings Co. unit comes at a time when the Japanese market for high-priced beer is growing while the beer gift market is leveling off.

Kirin’s participation in the high-end beer market is expected to intensify competition among major beer makers that have already announced plans to focus on premium product sales.

Brewery news Belarus: The State Control Committee suggest using economic levers in respect to Heineken
The State Control Committee of Belarus suggests using economic levers in respect to Heineken Company. The issue was discussed at the government session chaired by the President of Belarus on 10 April to discuss the state and development prospects of the Belarusian brewing industry, BelTA reported.

Chairman of the State Control Committee Alexander Yakobson turned the attention of the participants of the meeting to the operation of Heineken Company in Belarus. He said the company imports big amounts of beer and suffers losses related to loan debts.

According to Alexander Yakobson, only the interference of the State Control Committee made the company start active repayment of debts in the last five months. The company has also failed to honour its commitments to the local authorities in full.

“Today’s goal number one is, with the help of economic levers, to make this foreign company work in Belarus in the economic interests of the state, the business and consumers,” the Chairman of the State Control Committee said.

Barley news World: Wheat prices soar on fresh tensions in Ukraine
Wheat prices soared 4% as fresh tensions in Ukraine compounded concerns over dryness holding back the US winter crop, Agrimoney.com reported on April 14.

Monday, April 14 had been awaited with some anticipation by investors as it will bring, after the close of Chicago trading, the release of the first US Department of Agriculture assessment on progress of US corn planting, which has been slowed by cold and wet weather in the Midwest, particularly in eastern parts.

Kiev has threatened military action if the protestors failed to leave. However, Russia, which has a mass of troops in the east Ukraine border, has urged Kiev not to use force.

But the data event was overshadowed in early deals by the revival of concerns over the Ukraine crisis, after a deadline set by Kiev for pro-Russian activists to leave government buildings they are occupying in eastern Ukraine expired at 07:00 UK time (01:00 Chicago time).

With the assistant UN secretary general warning that Ukraine "teeters on the brink", the impact on grain markets, and in particular wheat, was predictable.

The Black Sea region is a huge source of wheat exports, with Ukraine the third-ranked corn exporter too, and there are concerns that the turmoil could affect production ...More info on site

Whisky news UK & India: Diageo offers $1.9 bln to hike its stake in United Spirits
Diageo Plc of the UK on April 15 offered to pay Rs 11,448 crore (around $1.9 billion) to hike its stake in United Spirits Ltd in a second attempt to tighten its grip in India’s leading liquor company, The Financial Express reported.

The world’s largest spirits maker, which holds 28.8 per cent of USL and has management control, has offered to acquire another 26 per cent of USL for Rs 3,030 per share, aiming to boost its shareholding to as much as 55 per cent. This is more than double of Rs 1,440 per share it offered USL shareholders in its last open offer in November 2012.

Diageo’s tender offer to buy shares at a premium of 18.5 per cent to their last closing price sent the USL stock surging by 11.58 per cent to Rs 2,853.15 on the BSE on April 15. If the offer becomes successful, Diageo’s investment would cross Rs 18,000 crore.

USL was previously controlled by Vijay Mallya, who has shed assets under heavy debt and the collapse of his Kingfisher Airlines Ltd. However, he remains chairman of United Spirits but the management of the company is under Diageo. Mallya’s UB Group owned 10.46 per cent of United Spirits ...More info on site
