Brewery news USA: Heineken’s tequila-flavored Desperados to be available in the entire US next year
Spanish-sounding, tequila-flavored Desperados, which is owned by Heineken, is making its U.S. debut after being sold overseas for more than 15 years. The brewer's U.S. importing division began selling bottles in Florida and Georgia earlier this month and has plans for national distribution next year, AdAge reported on April 24.

The ad campaign, which debuts next week, will target urban markets. "We are trying to deliver on that high-energy, nightlife type of scene," said Raul Esquer, the Desperados brand manager for Heineken USA.

The importer will use the same campaign that is rolling out internationally for the brand, which is sold in more than 60 countries. The agency is Dufresne Corrigan Scarlett, an independent shop based in Paris. The campaign, called "At Dusk, We Rise," includes two TV spots (above) that are full of music and dancing. A big chunk of the spending will be on digital and out-of-home ads.

Desperados is the latest example of beer marketers relying on flavors and higher-alcohol products to lure millennial drinkers. Anheuser-Busch InBev, for instance, began seeking more party-drinkers with the 2012 launch of Bud Light Platinum, and has continued to expand its line of Bud Light Lime branded margarita-inspired flavored malt beverages. Earlier this year, ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MI: Arcadia Brewing Co.’s Kalamazoo brewery to open on May 8
Arcadia Brewing Co. will officially open in Kalamazoo on May 8, MLive.com reported on April 24.

Owner Tim Suprise's 30,000-square-foot building at 701 E. Michigan Ave., along the Kalamazoo River, includes a brewpub, brewing and packaging space and offices.

Though patrons for several days now have been able to grab a beer at the Kalamazoo bar and order dinner at Twisted Tail, Arcadia's food truck stationed in the parking lot, Suprise said he plans to hold a grand opening for the Kalamazoo site May 8.

It comes about 18 years after Arcadia's original brewpub and brewing facility, which Suprise wanted to open in Kalamazoo, opened in Battle Creek. That operation will continue.

"It feels like it's been a long distance to this waypoint in the journey to get open to the public," Suprise said of opening the Kalamazoo site, which has been in the works for more than two years. "I'm relieved and excited at the same time to hit this stage."

The building sits on the east bank of the Kalamazoo River on the fringe of downtown Kalamazoo, in an area city officials are calling River's Edge. For decades, it was the site of a coal-burning Consumers Energy power plant.

Suprise bought the property, ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MD: Maryland’s brewpubs may soon be allowed to sell their own beer to go
Thanks to legislation awaiting Gov. Martin O'Malley's approval, Maryland’s beer lovers may soon be able to take home in six-packs the brews from their favourite brewpubs, Wtop.com reported on April 23.

Under the current law, the 21 licensed brewpubs across Maryland are allowed to serve customers their own crafted beer to drink in the restaurant, or even give it to them in a refillable growler or a keg to take home.

But brewers, who spend between three weeks and three months brewing a batch of beer from start to finish, can't send a six-pack of their product home with a thirsty consumer - at least not yet.

Although legislation passed last year gave some microbreweries the opportunity to self-distribute their product, they were stopped short by the inability to sell it in a to-go bottle, prompting bill sponsor Delegate Kelly Schulz, R-Frederick, to propose House Bill 464.

The bill, which was passed by the Maryland General Assembly at the end of March, would allow these brewpubs to bottle their beer and sell it to consumers to take home - a proposal that J.T. Smith, executive director of the Maryland Brewers Association, called "a bit of a no-brainer."

"It allows more fair access to the marketplace ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NY: Flagship Brewing Company to launch in New York next month
When the Flagship Brewing Company opens to the public in New York next month, the place will be brimming not just with beer, but with Staten Island pride, Time Warner Cable News reported on April 23.

"All these beers being developed here kind of have an attitude all their own that are very Staten Island," said Jay Sykes of the Flagship Brewing Company.

Sykes, a former beer distributor and native Staten Islander, has paired with two childhood friends to open the brewery. They've got four beers on tap, brewed and seasoned with hops planted on Staten Island.

Head brewer Patrick Morse said he spent time at dozens of Island bars and restaurants to come up with blends of beer created specifically for Staten Islanders.

"It's a working, how would you say it, blue-collar beer for the working man around here," Morse said.

Flagship owners searched for a home for a year before settling on a 13,000-square-foot former auto repair shop.

The Tompkinsville location is sandwiched between planned attractions near the St. George Ferry Terminal and the redevelopment of the Stapleton Homeport. That waterfront development is expected to bring large crowds to the island in the coming years.

"We all know the Ferris wheel's going along with the ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, AZ & CA: SanTan Brewing Company expanding distribution of its products to California
The long wait for SanTan Brewing Company’s out-of-state expansion is nearly over, East Valley Tribune reported on April 23.

The Chandler-based brewery announced this week it is teaming up with Reyes Beverage Group to introduce its uniquely southwestern style craft ales to the Southern California marketplace. Distribution is expected to begin later this month.

SanTan Brewing, which in 2012 was rated the country’s 14th fastest growing craft brewery by The New Yorker, plans to begin distributing its core beers — Devil’s Ale, HopShock IPA, Mr. Pineapple Wheat Beer — as well as a SanTan variety pack.

The Reyes Beverage Group will SanTan reach craft beer retail and tap accounts throughout San Diego and Los Angeles. Reyes Beverage Group California beer distributorships include Crest Beverage in San Diego, Gate City Beverage Distributors in San Bernardino, Allied Beverages in Los Angeles, Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties and Harbor Distributing in Orange County and Los Angeles.

“We believe in true partnerships with friends that are committed to educating, serving and selling craft beer in America,” Anthony Canecchia, SanTan Brewing founder and brewmaster, said.

“Reyes Beverage Group have undisputedly dedicated their houses to the development of the American craft revolution, which is part of our mission at SanTan Brewing.”

Brewery news USA, OH & AZ: Thirsty Dog Brewing sues Sleepy Dog Brewery over naming rights
Thirsty Dog Brewing Co. might want to consider naming a beer Legal Beagle. It would fit with the theme of the Akron brewer and would come at an appropriate time, considering current litigation over naming rights, Cleveland.com reported on April 24.

Thirsty Dog of Akron has sued Sleepy Dog Brewery in Tempe, Ariz., Thirsty Dog owner John Najeway said. At issue is similarly named ales: Thirsty Dog makes Old Leghumper, a porter. Sleepy Dog was brewing Leg Humper Hefeweizen.

As of April 24, Najeway was optimistic a solution is forthcoming.

"I think we're going to see a resolution," he said. "They have rebranded. Our lawyers and their owners will be hammering a settlement out."

On the same day, Sleepy Dog's website touted a Hefeweizen – but with no specific name.

The Akron brewery, which has been around since 1997, often assigns various dog breeds to specific styles of beer on its labels - Labrador Lager, Whippet Wheat and Irish Setter Red, to name a few. Sleepy Dog makes Red Rover Irish Ale, Wet Snout Milk Stout and Tail Chaser IPA, among others.

Lawsuits between brewers over naming rights are frequent. Last year, Great Lakes Brewing Co. had to change the name of its Alchemy Hour over ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, WI: US Food and Drug Administration to revise livestock feed rules affecting brewers
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration said April 24 it will revise proposed livestock feed rules after hearing objections about the potential cost from brewers who sell grain leftover from making beer to ranchers and dairy farmers, The Wall Street Journal reported.

Beer makers big and small feared they would have to pay for grain testing, equipment, audits and other safety measures at an estimated cost of $13.6 million per brewery, likely affecting the price of beer, beef and dairy products. To avoid passing on those costs, some brewers said they would have simply sent the grain to landfills.

The FDA proposed the rules as part of its implementation of the 2011 Food Safety Modernization Act, which is aimed at preventing outbreaks of foodborne illness. One incentive was the 2007 contamination of pet food from China with melamine, which killed hundreds of dogs and cats in the U.S.

"That was a tragic thing for pets, and it was sort of a wake-up call for everyone involved in food safety," said Dan McChesney, director of the Office of Surveillance and Compliance at the FDA's Center for Veterinary Medicine. "If this could happen with pet food, why couldn't it happen with human food?"

Brewery news India: Kaltenberg beer to be launched in Goa
Corking open a new 'super-premium' category in India's beer market, a German brand has launched its lager in Goa. Kaltenberg beer, owned by German firm Konig Ludwig International, will be manufactured by CMJ Breweries Private Ltd at their plant in Meghalaya, and will retail in Goa at 75 for a pint. Until now, the super-premium category only included imported beers, and holds a tiny market share of around 5 lakh (1 lakh = 100 000) cases a year, The Times of India reported on April 24.

Konig Ludwig International is owned by Bavarian royal Prince Luitpold von Bayern, great grandson of the last king of Bavaria. Kaltenberg is claimed to be one of the oldest beers in the world, courtesy of the royal family that started the first brewery in 1260.

"Goa is the Mecca of beer, and the best state to launch this new super-premium category of beer, called so because all the ingredients are imported from Germany. Even though the beer is indigenously manufactured, the end product will be identical to the beverage manufactured in Germany as the brewing process is the same, as well as the recipe and climatic conditions," claimed Rohit Jain, chairman, CMJ Breweries.
