Brewery news Guatemala: Ambev and Central American Brewery competing for Guatemala’s small beer market
The colonial city of Antigua in Guatemala attracts many American tourists. They roam the cobblestone streets, snapping pictures of the historic churches. They purchase unusual-sounding wooden flutes from street vendors. And in the evening they retire to bars and drink prodigious amounts of inexpensive beer. “Tonight these places are going to be packed,” says Roberto Lara, strolling through the city on a sunny day in February.

This should hearten Lara, a vice president of Castillo Brothers, a Guatemalan conglomerate that owns shopping malls, cemeteries, power plants, and the country’s largest beermaker, Cervecería Centro Americana, also known as Central American Brewery. Its signature product is Gallo, a lager that takes its name from the label’s imperious rooster. Gallo, 118 years old, is Guatemala’s most famous beer, Bloomberg reported on May 8.

But something is bothering Lara, a boyish 35-year-old who once worked as an investment banker for JPMorgan in New York. He enters a grocery store and makes his way to the beer section. The shelves are packed with newer stuff, much of it made by AB InBev, the world’s largest beer company. Until three years ago, you wouldn’t find the multinational corporation’s brands such as Budweiser, Bud Light, and Stella Artois in ...More info on site

Brewery news Romania: Lower purchasing power changing Romania’s beer consumption habits
The consumption habits on the Romanian beer market are changing due to lower purchasing power, given that 2013 saw the lowest level of consumption in the last 5 years and a drop of 10 percent compared to 2012, according to the EY Regioplan: The Contribution made by Beer to the European Economy report, quoted by Agerpres.

More and more Romanian consumers chose cheaper beer, a trend that has become more pronounced in recent years. Given that bottled beer is usually more expensive, this type of beer has also registered a decline since 2008.

Beer is one of the few sectors in Romania that still has a growing local production, and over 95 percent is being produced locally, according to the report.

A total of 17 production units operated on the Romanian beer market in 2012.

Brewery news India: SABMiller said to be planning a re-launch of Foster’s beer
SABMiller India Ltd plans to re-launch its Foster’s beer label to revive the fortunes of the first successful international beer brand in India and drive the company’s growth in the country, Livemint reported on May 8 citing three people familiar with the matter.

SABMiller plans to announce the re-launch of Foster’s later this month, the sources said, requesting anonymity.

SABMiller India, which also owns brands such as Haywards, Miller High Life and Knock Out beer, has created a new marketing campaign to promote the re-launch that will do away with the Art of Chilling tag and the famous Australian for beer tag that Foster’s is known for in India, said one of the three people who has seen the campaign.

The company did not respond to an email seeking comment.

Foster’s was launched in India in the late 1990s and went on to become the first successful international beer brand and the second-largest mild beer after United Breweries Ltd’s Kingfisher. SABMiller acquired Foster’s India’s operations in 2006 and launched Foster’s Strong as it sought to get a higher share of strong beer sales, which account for nearly 85% of all beer sales in India. However, Foster’s Strong barely made a dent in the share ...More info on site

Brewery news USA & UK: California’s Karl Strauss Brewing Company may open up shop in Belfast
A major US craft beer chain could be set to open up shop in Belfast – with the prospect of dozens of jobs being created in the process, Belfast Telegraph reported on May 8.

California-based Karl Strauss Brewing Company is eyeing up a location in the east of the city, and has already predicted a new £1.7 mln (USD2.9 mln) opening could bring up to 100 jobs.

The firm says a proposed 'brewpub' would include a restaurant, as well as the possibility for an on-site brewery. The potentially lucrative addition to Northern Ireland's burgeoning brewing and food scene was initiated by Maurice Kinkead, chief executive of the East Belfast Partnership.

"I'm heading over for a meeting next month with the owners," he said. "It would be a great opportunity – bringing something international like a brewpub. It would certainly help make this city a more interesting place."

San Diego-owned and operated, Karl Strauss boasts eight locations across California, serving a wide selection of its own artisan beers alongside an eclectic food menu.

The idea for the new outlet – which would be the company's first outside the US – came about after Mr Kinkead met with a business friend to discuss the possibility of adding ...More info on site

Barley news Australia: New crop wheat and barley prices rise on issues abroad
Australia’s new crop wheat and barley prices have risen in recent weeks, due to fears that escalating tensions in Ukraine and deteriorating US crop conditions could disrupt global supply, ABC Rural reported on May 9.

Now the market is waiting to see what comes out of the United States Department of Agriculture May supply and demand report, which will be released this weekend.

In Australia, Pentag Nidera trading manager Matthew Pattison says the price rise comes as farmers across the east coast start planting winter crops.

"I think we've generally seen a rally of A$15 to A$25 for new crop values in particular.

"Old crop has been quite steady, but the focus has been more on new crop because these events are really questioning the supply of grain in the second half of the year."

Until mid-April, grain exports from Ukraine had been continuing basically without a hitch, but loadings into the end of the month tailed off substantially.

"I think initially most people were focusing on the planting of the Ukrainian crops and the general consensus is that the wheat crops in particular have been planted, the corn crops are being planted," Mr Pattison said.

"Now that we've moved through that planting window, I think people ...More info on site

Barley news USA: Malting barley breeding in Idaho seen as very productive
Malting barley production in the western United States was dominated by two-rowed varieties introduced from Europe until the release of the variety Klages in 1973. There are numerous reasons for this, but two stand out. Breeding programs focused on feed varieties during prohibition so it was some time before they were able to incorporate the desired malting and brewing quality into varieties adapted to the region. Secondly, 90% of the malt US brewers were using in the 1950s was made from six-row varieties, so European two-row varieties like Betzes from Poland, Moravian from Czechoslovakia, and Piroline from Germany were able to supply the industry with all the two-row it needed, AG Weekly reported on May 7.

In the mid-50s though, beer production was escalating and there was a growing interest in two-row varieties and western barley production in general. The American Malting Barley Association (AMBA) began funding research to improve varieties for the western US, and work with extension agronomists to promote the growing of malting barley there. Dr. Darrell Wesenberg was hired by the USDA Agricultural Research Service (ARS) to work on barley in 1968 and brought a good understanding of malting quality from his time at the University of ...More info on site
