Brewery news USA: Craft Brew Alliance reports 20% increase in Q1 net sales
Craft Brew Alliance, Inc. (CB(A)), an independent craft brewing company, on May 7 reported its financial results for the first quarter ended March 31, 2014. The results for the first quarter are in line with management's expectations, and the company confirms previously reported 2014 guidance, it said.

Net sales and total beer shipments increased 20% and 17%, respectively, in the first quarter due to the continued organic growth of the company’s complementary portfolio of time-tested and new beers such as Widmer Brothers Upheaval IPA, Redhook KCCO Black Lager, Kona Longboard Lager and Omission Beer. Depletion volume grew 8% over the first quarter of 2013, which Craft Brewers Alliance attributes to the continued activation of its distinctive portfolio strategy. The company’s gross margin rate increased 260 basis points to 27.0% in the first quarter, compared to 24.4% for the first quarter last year, which reflects the improved efficiencies of its breweries, primarily due to better capacity utilization, it said. Capacity utilization increased to 68% in the first quarter of 2014 compared to 58% in the first quarter of 2013. As a percentage of net sales, the brewery’s selling, general and administrative expense ("SG&A") decreased to 28% in the ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, ON: Woodhouse Brewing Company planning official launch this summer
If you're going to name a brewing company after yourself, it helps if you have a cool-sounding name. So at the very least, Graham Woodhouse, the founder of Woodhouse Brewing Company, has that going for him. Which is nice.

As it happens, he also has some experience in the brewing industry, a keen eye for label design, and a recipe for a tasty little lager that he hopes will be a hit among Ontario's patio frequenters this summer when his beer officially launches, Blogto.com reported on May 7.

Currently operating as a "one man wolfpack," the former Labatt employee's plans are still in the early stages. He's been tweaking the recipe for an all-malt lager crafted with the assistance of Charles Maclean of Maclean's Ales, located just outside of Woodhouse's hometown of Hanover, Ont.

Woodhouse, who is gearing up to brew his beer on a commercial scale in the next few weeks, is working to eventually source hops from Meaford, Ont.'s Bighead Hops. For his first large-scale batch, he'll use hops sourced from the U.S. simply because of the timing of his first brew, harvest season, and the scarce availability of local hops right now.

Woodhouse says that this beer, which will be marketed ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CO & PA: Left Hand Brewing’s products to become available in Western Pennsylvania
Colorado’s Left Hand Brewing has expanded its product presence to Western Pennsylvania, under a distribution partnership with Frank B. Fuhrer Wholesale, Drinks Business Review reported on May 7.

Through the partnership, Frank B. Fuhrer Wholesale will distribute Left Hand Brewing's perennial lineup and Nitro series across the Pittsburgh market in the state.

The products under the two ranges include Milk Stout, Milk Stout Nitro, Sawtooth Ale, Sawtooth Nitro, 400 Pound Monkey IPA, Black Jack Porter, Polestar Pilsner, Stranger Pale Ale, as well as, Mountain Mixer, the brewery's variety pack.

Left Hand Brewing sales representative Dan Conway said that the growing momentum of the brewery enables the company to focus on the expansion to Pennsylvania.

"I've been contacted by so many fans and friends over the years and now I can finally say with authority that we're here!" added Conway.

Left Hand Brewing, which already has its footprint in Philadelphia and Eastern Pennsylvania, is planning to produce around 85,000 barrels in 2014.

Brewery news Canada, BC: Dageraad Brewing to start offering its Belgian-style beers later in May
This story, like many others, begins overseas.

A man travelled to Belgium to meet up with some friends he had met earlier while adventuring around Laos. When he arrived in Antwerp, his friends took him to Dageraadplaats, a square made up of cafés and tables full of people drinking Belgian beer.

This is where the man got hooked on the enticing aromas and flavours of Belgian beer.

The man is Ben Coli, and soon he will be sharing his love of Belgian beer with consumers throughout Burnaby and the Lower Mainland when his new brewery, Dageraad Brewery, produces its first batch of brew, Burnaby Now reported on May 8.

Coli began his venture into the brewing world with a friend and a secondhand home-brewing kit they bought off Craigslist. After dabbling in a few different varieties of beer, Coli tried his hand at crafting a Belgian-style brew.

“I had some really good luck with my first couple of Belgian-style batches and got hooked on brewing them,” he said. “It’s just something in the complexity and just diversity of Belgian beer.”

Beer in Belgium is known for its unique ingredients. Rather than stick with the traditional barley, hops, water and yeast, Belgians often incorporate other, seemingly random, ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, IL: 4204 Main Street Brewing Company about to start operating in Belleville
Phil Druen might have the cure for what’s been ailing Belleville, Illinois, Fox2Now reported on May 8.

“I said I really want it to stand out,” says Phillip Druen the VP of Sales & Marketing for 4204 Main Street Brewing Company. “I mean you drive by, you’re looking at it as you drive by.”

But this building that had been empty for seven years, is about to be reborn n as a micro-brewery.

There’s been a lot of sweat equity before the suds can flow.

“I`ve been literally building every table every booth, floors, walls, deck, bar, tables,” says owner Todd Kennedy. “I’m a DIY kind of guy. I watch a lot of this old house.”

This old German town, founded 200 years ago in 1814 is about to celebrate its bicentennial, and what better way than with a micro brew pub.

“We’re doing brewing modernized but essentially the way they were doing it hundreds and hundreds of years ago,” says Adam Patterson the assistant general manager. “You can watch us mill all the grain. It’ll drop into the grist hopper and the water ton. You can see it go. Tony is piping it in for the boil for the ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, KS: Radius Brewing Company opened in downtown Emporia
Another brewery has opened in Kansas, as craft beer continues its robust rebound in a state that was the first to enact prohibition and the last to repeal it, The Kansas City Star reported on May 8.

Radius Brewing Company in downtown Emporia, 100 miles from downtown on southbound Interstate 35, has been packing its 70-seat dining room five days a week since opening in late April. Co-owner and sole brewer Jeremy “J.J.” Johns says 4,500 customers were served in the pub’s first 10 days.

The brew pub also sells beer to go in refillable 64-ounce growlers and 32-ounce “squealers,” an environmentally friendly system that eliminates the transportation and energy cost of recycling glass bottles or aluminum cans.

In addition to its stable of regular beers offered on the menu, favorites including Big Head Blonde, William Allen Wheat, IPA, Brown Ale, Porter and Milk Stout, Radius brews small batches listed on a chalkboard over the bar that are worth paying attention to.

On a recent weekend, a small-batch hefeweizen tasted remarkably similar to the unfiltered wheat beers in Munich that lend the style its name.

Beer fans who have visited Tallgrass Brewing Company in Manhattan will recognize a prominent design feature inside Radius: Two stainless ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CA: Two new pint-sized breweries preparing to launch in California
A couple of new, pint-sized additions to the East Bay’s burgeoning beer scene are set to open this summer, Inside Scoop reported on May 8.

Cleophus Quealy Beer Company: Peter Baker and Dan Watson, who met as engineers at Google in 2005, are currently in construction on a small brewery and 1,600-square-feet tasting room at 448 Hester Street in San Leandro. The plan for Cleophus Quealy (a combination of two old family names), according to Baker, is for a small neighborhood-focused brewery that will churn out multiple small batches of eclectic, often seasonal beers, that will switch up frequently—they hope rotate the 8–12 handles on a weekly basis.

The idea, at least at first, is to take a page out of the tech engineering playbook by developing their recipes incrementally via multiple small batches with plenty of customer feedback. As for the beer itself, Baker says they would lean more towards Belgian and French styles, in addition to plenty of “funky, sour beers.”

“We’re really hoping to bring more variety to what we feel is a pretty top-heavy beer world,” Baker says.

Look for a soft opening in mid summer.

Independent Brewing Company: Meanwhile Steve McDaniel, co-founder of Oakland Brewing Company, is working on a ...More info on site

Barley news USA: Malting barley breeding in Idaho seen as very productive
Malting barley production in the western United States was dominated by two-rowed varieties introduced from Europe until the release of the variety Klages in 1973. There are numerous reasons for this, but two stand out. Breeding programs focused on feed varieties during prohibition so it was some time before they were able to incorporate the desired malting and brewing quality into varieties adapted to the region. Secondly, 90% of the malt US brewers were using in the 1950s was made from six-row varieties, so European two-row varieties like Betzes from Poland, Moravian from Czechoslovakia, and Piroline from Germany were able to supply the industry with all the two-row it needed, AG Weekly reported on May 7.

In the mid-50s though, beer production was escalating and there was a growing interest in two-row varieties and western barley production in general. The American Malting Barley Association (AMBA) began funding research to improve varieties for the western US, and work with extension agronomists to promote the growing of malting barley there. Dr. Darrell Wesenberg was hired by the USDA Agricultural Research Service (ARS) to work on barley in 1968 and brought a good understanding of malting quality from his time at the University of ...More info on site

Brewery news USA & UK: California’s Karl Strauss Brewing Company may open up shop in Belfast
A major US craft beer chain could be set to open up shop in Belfast – with the prospect of dozens of jobs being created in the process, Belfast Telegraph reported on May 8.

California-based Karl Strauss Brewing Company is eyeing up a location in the east of the city, and has already predicted a new £1.7 mln (USD2.9 mln) opening could bring up to 100 jobs.

The firm says a proposed 'brewpub' would include a restaurant, as well as the possibility for an on-site brewery. The potentially lucrative addition to Northern Ireland's burgeoning brewing and food scene was initiated by Maurice Kinkead, chief executive of the East Belfast Partnership.

"I'm heading over for a meeting next month with the owners," he said. "It would be a great opportunity – bringing something international like a brewpub. It would certainly help make this city a more interesting place."

San Diego-owned and operated, Karl Strauss boasts eight locations across California, serving a wide selection of its own artisan beers alongside an eclectic food menu.

The idea for the new outlet – which would be the company's first outside the US – came about after Mr Kinkead met with a business friend to discuss the possibility of adding ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OH: Pigskin Brewing Co. to build sports-themed craft brewery in Gahanna by August
Football fans can look forward to cheering on their teams while drinking favorite beers at Pigskin Brewing Co. in Gahanna's Creekside, This Week reported on May 7.

Strathmore Development Co., owner of the private portions of Creekside, and Pigskin Brewing Co. announced April 24 that Pigskin would construct a state-of-the-art sports-themed craft brewery and taproom at Creekside. It will be across from Signatures at Creekside's C Building, 81 Mill St., in space formerly occupied by The Chocolate Tree, which will reopen at 953 E. Johnstown Road in Gahanna.

"Pigskin wanted an inviting atmosphere where residents and visitors to Gahanna could see the fermenting and craft-beer manufacturing storage tanks, as well as the Tasting Room, right on Mill Street, so they are taking the entire front of the 81 Mill St. building," said Terry Benton, Strathmore vice president of real estate. "The design will allow guests to also enjoy hand-crafted beer on the covered outdoor seating area in front of this building."

Pigskin's taproom will feature a variety of beers from local breweries around central Ohio in addition to their own hand-crafted beers.

"Pigskin brewery and taproom will be an atmosphere where the guest can discuss the fine art of craft brewing with our master ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CO: Coda Brewing opens its doors in Aurora
The word "coda" is used to signify a passage that brings a song or a piece of music to an end, but according to Luke Smith, it can have other meanings - like the end of a long brewing process or having a beer at the end of the day. And for Smith, a former medical researcher at the University of Colorado, coda also signifies a beginning, Denver Westword Blogs reported on May 7.

That's because this week Smith opened the doors to Coda Brewing, which is on the former Fitzsimons Army base in Aurora and next to the Anschutz Medical Campus.

"We have sort of an apothecary theme," says Smith, which is appropriate given both Smith's former avocation in the pharmacology department and his brewery's location.

But beer - and music - will be the real stars at Coda. "I'm trying to break barriers by pairing music with beer, which I don't think has been done before," he explains.

For example, Smith says his Dogcatcher American Red Ale - brewed with orange-blossom honey and dry hopped with Cascade and Crystal hops - goes well with the song "Atomic Dog," by George Clinton. The Migration Oatmeal Stout, meanwhile, pairs with James Taylor's "Migration," while ...More info on site

Barley news Australia: New crop wheat and barley prices rise on issues abroad
Australia’s new crop wheat and barley prices have risen in recent weeks, due to fears that escalating tensions in Ukraine and deteriorating US crop conditions could disrupt global supply, ABC Rural reported on May 9.

Now the market is waiting to see what comes out of the United States Department of Agriculture May supply and demand report, which will be released this weekend.

In Australia, Pentag Nidera trading manager Matthew Pattison says the price rise comes as farmers across the east coast start planting winter crops.

"I think we've generally seen a rally of A$15 to A$25 for new crop values in particular.

"Old crop has been quite steady, but the focus has been more on new crop because these events are really questioning the supply of grain in the second half of the year."

Until mid-April, grain exports from Ukraine had been continuing basically without a hitch, but loadings into the end of the month tailed off substantially.

"I think initially most people were focusing on the planting of the Ukrainian crops and the general consensus is that the wheat crops in particular have been planted, the corn crops are being planted," Mr Pattison said.

"Now that we've moved through that planting window, I think people ...More info on site

Brewery news Guatemala: Ambev and Central American Brewery competing for Guatemala’s small beer market
The colonial city of Antigua in Guatemala attracts many American tourists. They roam the cobblestone streets, snapping pictures of the historic churches. They purchase unusual-sounding wooden flutes from street vendors. And in the evening they retire to bars and drink prodigious amounts of inexpensive beer. “Tonight these places are going to be packed,” says Roberto Lara, strolling through the city on a sunny day in February.

This should hearten Lara, a vice president of Castillo Brothers, a Guatemalan conglomerate that owns shopping malls, cemeteries, power plants, and the country’s largest beermaker, Cervecería Centro Americana, also known as Central American Brewery. Its signature product is Gallo, a lager that takes its name from the label’s imperious rooster. Gallo, 118 years old, is Guatemala’s most famous beer, Bloomberg reported on May 8.

But something is bothering Lara, a boyish 35-year-old who once worked as an investment banker for JPMorgan in New York. He enters a grocery store and makes his way to the beer section. The shelves are packed with newer stuff, much of it made by AB InBev, the world’s largest beer company. Until three years ago, you wouldn’t find the multinational corporation’s brands such as Budweiser, Bud Light, and Stella Artois in ...More info on site

Brewery news Romania: Lower purchasing power changing Romania’s beer consumption habits
The consumption habits on the Romanian beer market are changing due to lower purchasing power, given that 2013 saw the lowest level of consumption in the last 5 years and a drop of 10 percent compared to 2012, according to the EY Regioplan: The Contribution made by Beer to the European Economy report, quoted by Agerpres.

More and more Romanian consumers chose cheaper beer, a trend that has become more pronounced in recent years. Given that bottled beer is usually more expensive, this type of beer has also registered a decline since 2008.

Beer is one of the few sectors in Romania that still has a growing local production, and over 95 percent is being produced locally, according to the report.

A total of 17 production units operated on the Romanian beer market in 2012.

Brewery news India: SABMiller said to be planning a re-launch of Foster’s beer
SABMiller India Ltd plans to re-launch its Foster’s beer label to revive the fortunes of the first successful international beer brand in India and drive the company’s growth in the country, Livemint reported on May 8 citing three people familiar with the matter.

SABMiller plans to announce the re-launch of Foster’s later this month, the sources said, requesting anonymity.

SABMiller India, which also owns brands such as Haywards, Miller High Life and Knock Out beer, has created a new marketing campaign to promote the re-launch that will do away with the Art of Chilling tag and the famous Australian for beer tag that Foster’s is known for in India, said one of the three people who has seen the campaign.

The company did not respond to an email seeking comment.

Foster’s was launched in India in the late 1990s and went on to become the first successful international beer brand and the second-largest mild beer after United Breweries Ltd’s Kingfisher. SABMiller acquired Foster’s India’s operations in 2006 and launched Foster’s Strong as it sought to get a higher share of strong beer sales, which account for nearly 85% of all beer sales in India. However, Foster’s Strong barely made a dent in the share ...More info on site
