The hidden treasures of the hard resins

ABSTRACT
For decades, maybe even for centuries nobody cared about the hard resin fraction of hops. We have learned that the hard resins can be used to add a pleasant bitterness to beer. Researchers showed that by using a specific extract of the hard resins, the concentration of a number of bioeffective Xanthohumol derivatives can be enriched tremendously. These findings could help in the development of a new generation of health related beverages.

Brewery news USA: MillerCoors focusing on Redd’s ale franchise to compete against wine and spirits
The Redd’s ale franchise is the apple of MillerCoors’ chief executive officer Tom Long’s eye right now, Milwaukee Business Journal reported on May 9.

The fruit-flavored ales — Redd’s Apple Ale and Redd’s Strawberry Ale — have more than doubled in volume in the first quarter of 2014 compared with the same period last year. The franchise is bigger than Mike’s Hard brands. And it continues to outpace share growth versus Budweiser’s ‘Rita franchise, according to Nielsen.

These offerings are part of Chicago-based MillerCoors LLC's new product strategy: to compete against wine and spirits.

Long told analysts during an earnings call on May 7 that the strategy is working since Redd’s Apple Ale continues to be one of the fastest-growing brands in the category.

“Best of all, much of Redd’s success is incremental to beer as 40 percent of Redd’s volume comes from white wine and vodka,” Long said.

So the company expects to continue capitalizing on the success of the franchise by introducing the Redd’s variety pack, which will feature its newest offering Redd’s Hard Iced Tea.

The company also plans to introduce a higher alcohol by volume ale called Redd’s Wicked Apple, which will be available in 10- and 20-ounce cans in August.

Hops news USA: Craze for craft beer causes hops shortage
An ice-cold craft beer has become part of the uniform for self-respecting hipsters from Brooklyn in New York to the London borough of Hackney. Now the craze for the microbrews made by small independent brewers has led to a scramble for hops, the key ingredient used to add flavour and bitterness, Financial Times reported on May 12.

In the US, where the movement was born, the $14 bln craft beer industry has seen annual double-digit production growth over the past few years. This has doubled the price of the specialist aroma and flavour hops favoured by craft brewers to about $7 to $10 a pound over the past five years – the highest since 2007-08 when the market was hit by a severe drought.

Craft beers use between four to 10 times more hops than the average lager produced by multinational beer companies and are often described as "hop bombs".

"I've been buying hops for 30 years. It's more challenging now than just about any time in my career," says Steve Dresler, brewmaster at California-based Sierra Nevada, a leading craft brewer started by homebrewers in the late 1970s.

Appetite for new beers pushed the total number of US craft breweries to 2,768 last year, ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, AB: Big Rock Brewery incurs net loss of C$310 thousand in the quarter to March 31
Calgary-based Big Rock Brewery Inc. announced its financial results on May 12 for the quarter ended March 31, 2014.

A net loss of C$310 thousand for the quarter ended March 31, 2014 was incurred as compared to net income of C$92 thousand in the quarter ended March 31, 2013.

Reported sales volumes decreased 19.0% to 34,100 hectolitres for the first quarter of 2014 as compared to 42,098 hl for the first quarter of 2013.

Overall sales volumes were negatively impacted by aggressive and growing competition in the Alberta beer market, reduced promotional pricing activity, discontinuance or delay of certain package configurations and poor spring weather, the company said.

Volume growth occurred in premium-priced brands, including Fowl Mouth ESB-Big Rock's best-selling Brewmaster's Edition beer to date.

The company released four new limited edition beers in the first quarter and expects to release 25 additional limited edition products during the remainder of 2014.

Big Rock's new brewery in British Columbia is under construction, with expected production and sales in the third quarter of 2014.

Brewery news USA, VA: 2 Witches Winery and Brewing Company ready to launch in Danville
A new business in Danville will have a lot of people 'cheer'-ing. 2 Witches Winery and Brewing Company is opening this week. They say it will be the only place to make both wine and beer under one roof in Virginia, Wset.com reported on May 13.

When 2 Witches Winery and Brewing Company opens their doors, they will put Danville on the map.

"The state map of Virginia puts little icons wherever there are farm wineries and last year when they produced that map, the legend was on top of Danville because there was nothing here, this year there is actually a spot for Danville," said Julie Brown, President of 2 Witches Winery and Brewing Company.

Brown says she and her husband Ethan had thought about opening a winery for years.

"The equipment we use for making wine, we only use it for a couple of months out of the year," said Brown. So, they decided to also put it to another use: beer.

"This is something we've been planning for a while and practicing," said Brown. Julie will use her father's Pittsylvania County vineyard for the grapes and Ethan will use his chemistry degree to create the beer. ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, KS: Border Brewing Co. to open this fall in Kansas City
Border Brewing Co. is taking a 1,750-square-foot space in Kansas City, at 404 E. 18th St., across from Grinders. A fall opening is planned for the brewery and taproom, Kansas City Star reported on May 13.

The brewery was founded in 2013 and has been looking for a site in the Crossroads area to “bridge the gap between beer drinkers and beer lovers,” said Eric Martens, owner and head brewer.

Its rotating lineup will have six to eight offerings at a time, including Extra Pale “Patio” Ale, Campfire Porter and an Imperial IPA.

“We want to have a high rotation of different styles of beers so people can try new things and be involved with the process,” Martens said. “I think it’s a great spot for us, being that close to Grinders and First Fridays going on. And I live in the area.”

Martens has a chemical engineering degree from Kansas State University and has been in that industry for five years. But he also has been a home brewer for seven years and wanted to make that a career.

He named the brewery “Border” in a nod to the Kansas/Missouri border.

“I’ve grown up on both the Kansas and Missouri sides. But our concept is ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MN: Indeed Brewing Company expands distribution in home state
Indeed Brewing Company, Northeast Minneapolis’ biggest craft brewery by volume, is partnering with J.J. Taylor Distributing Company—also based in Northeast—to expand its distribution footprint across Minnesota. The partnership, which officially began on May 1, will see Indeed enter or expand in southern Minnesota markets like Rochester, Owatonna/Faribault and Mankato, The Line reported on May 14.

According to Indeed marketing director and co-founder Rachel Anderson, Indeed will be available in virtually every major Minnesota market by the end of the year.

The J.J. Taylor partnership represents the last big link in Indeed’s in-state distribution chain. Dahlheimer Distributing already sells Indeed beer in east-central Minnesota, and D & D Beer Company handles distribution for points north of St. Cloud. Indeed also self-distributes in Duluth and Hudson, Wisconsin, the only out-of-state market currently served, and has no plans to stop. According to Anderson, the company envisions a hub-and-spoke network that penetrates deep into Minnesota’s vast rural hinterland, with self-distribution representing a key strategy for ensuring coverage.

Indeed’s partnership with J.J. Taylor, and two recent expansion initiatives, are born out of necessity. Indeed has roughly doubled its production capacity during the past year, from 6,000 barrels to between 11,000 and 12,000 barrels, and it’s still not at ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, AZ & TX: SanTan Brewing Co. to start shipping its signature beers to Texas
Chandler-based SanTan Brewing Co. will soon see its line of signature beers on store shelves in Texas, Phoenix Business Journal reported on May 13.

On the heels of its distribution deal in California, the makers of Devil’s Ale and Mr. Pineapple have come to terms with Fort Worth, Texas-based Ben E. Keith Co. to distribute its brews throughout the Lone Star State.

“We are very excited to be partnering with SanTan Brewing in Texas,” said Kevin Bartholomew, president of Ben E. Keith. “We have had consumers reach out to us for several years, asking if SanTan brands might be coming to our state soon.”

As Arizona’s second-largest brewery, SanTan recently ventured into California with its first out-of-state distribution deal.

The Chandler-based brewery has been eyeing expansion and out-of-state distribution for some time. The craft brewer opened a new $6 million brewing facility last year that substantially enhances its brewing capacity, and hired craft beer veteran Wendy Weathers as business development manager to work toward out-of-state distribution.

Other Arizona-based breweries such as Phoenix Ale Brewery and Williams-based Grand Canyon Brewing Co. also sell their brews beyond state lines.

Arizona’s largest brewer, Tempe-based Four Peaks Brewing Co., has long downplayed any desire to expand out of state.

Brewery news Canada, NS: Meander River Farm Brewery to open in Ashdale on May 17
The Atlantic Canada Beer Blog reported on May 9 that the nanobrewery that has been in the works at Meander River Farm since last summer will finally be opening its doors to the public.

Located in the community of Ashdale, Nova Scotia, approximately 20 km from Windsor, Meander River is a family-run farm that raises pigs and poultry and grows flowers, lavender and hops, with local breweries such as Garrison being regular customers for the latter. Owner Alan Bailey is a long-time homebrewer, and he tells ACBB that expanding to a commercial brewing operation is a logical extension of the Meander River ethos.

The Meander River Brewery will open for the first time on Saturday May 17th, offering kegs and growlers of Lunchbox Pale Ale, a 6.5% abv and 55 IBU ale that Bailey describes as being “appealing to both the seasoned craft beer audience and those making the transition to craft beer.”

Brewery news Brazil: Beer tax increase postponed until after the World Cup soccer tournament
Brazil’s government has delayed plans to raise taxes on beer and soda until after the World Cup soccer tournament, bowing to pressure from beverage makers including Ambev and Coca-Cola, Bloomberg reported on May 13.

Brazil will postpone the tax increase to September from the original start date of June, Finance Minister Guido Mantega told to reporters on May 13. Mantega made the announcement on the levy, which is expected to raise prices by an average of 2.25 percent, after meeting with beer makers’ executives in Brasilia earlier on the same day.

President Dilma Rousseff’s administration is seeking to boost tax revenues to shore up fiscal accounts after Standard & Poor’s handed Brazil its first sovereign credit downgrade in a decade. S&P on March 24 warned that sluggish growth and expansionary fiscal policies are driving the country’s debts higher. Mantega later called S&P’s decision a mistake and assured he would rein in tax breaks.

“In three months we’ll have an increase” that will be implemented gradually over years, Mantega said about the tax. “We are concerned about inflation remaining under control, and this sector can make a major contribution. We made an agreement that there would be no price increase during the Cup.”

Brewery news Nigeria: Guinness Nigeria Plc to expand in lower-priced beers
Guinness Nigeria Plc, the west African nation’s second-largest brewer, is expanding its offering of lower-priced beers to arrest sliding profit amid a slowdown in consumer spending in Africa’s biggest economy, Bloomberg reported on May 9.

The unit of London-based Diageo Plc has started sales of the new Dubic lager brand, which costs less than the company’s flagship Guinness stout, Chief Executive Officer Seni Adetu said in an interview with Bloomberg TV Africa’s Boason Omofaye at the World Economic Forum in the capital, Abuja. The brewer also plans to improve distribution in Africa’s most populous nation by making its drinks available in more outlets.

“One area we are disadvantaged versus our competitors is in terms of our play in the value segment,” Adetu said. “That’s an area where historically Guinness Nigeria has not played in. We are Guinness - we tend to be more of a premium brands company. It’s now we are getting our footprint in the value sector.”

Guinness Nigeria net income declined 22 percent to 5.9 billion naira ($36.6 million) in the nine months through March, and revenue also fell, the Lagos-based company said April 28. Nigerian drinkers are switching to cheaper brands after a fuel subsidy cut contributed to a ...More info on site

Brewery news Nigeria: Heineken to merge majority owned subsidiaries Nigerian Breweries and Consolidated Breweries
Heineken, the world’s third largest brewer, has announced that, subject to the customary regulatory and other approvals, its majority owned subsidiaries Nigerian Breweries (NB) plc and Consolidated Breweries plc businesses will be merged.

In a statement on its website on May 9, the brewer said a pre-merger notification has been filed with the Nigerian Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on behalf of both companies.

“The proposed merger is based on a significant and compelling strategic rationale and will enable the combined business to fully capitalise on the future growth potential of the highly attractive Nigerian beer and malt drinks market,” the company said in the statement.

“The transaction is expected to create value for all key stakeholders, particularly shareholders, drive benefits from increased economies of scale, enhance operating and administrative efficiencies and increase the new company’s speed and agility in response to market developments.”

Regulatory and other approvals are expected to take several months, and until these have been obtained both businesses will continue to operate as usual. However, after the merger is concluded Nigerian Breweries, was incorporated in 1946, will remain listed on the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE).

Brewery news Angola: N’gola beer factory to launch new beer filling line
A new beer filling line, with a production capacity of 12,000 barrels per month, is being installed in the N’gola beer factory, in the city of Lubango, Huíla province, the factory’s director João Pedro Lopes was quoted as saying by Macauhub on May 9.

The new filling line will be inaugurated in the first two weeks of June, he said, adding that it was part of the factory’s modernisation plan.

The factory currently has three filling lines and the investment that is underway is intended to allow the brand to “affirm itself in the Southern region of Angola, attract new customers and increase turnover in other regions of the country.”

The factory, which is the only one of its kind in Huíla province, was established in 1974, and in 2000 its management was taken over by South African group SABMiller. The brewery now produces around 1.3 million hectolitres of beer per month.

Last April two new beer factories started operating in Angola, increasing the number of beer makers in the country to 11. The beer market leader in Angola is French group Castel, which has nine production units and a market share of 80 percent.

Brewery news The Czech Republic: Czech brewer Lobkowicz to raise nearly 1 bln crowns through IPO
Czech brewer Lobkowicz aims to raise nearly 1 billion crowns ($50.24 million) through an initial public offering to fund growth via acquisitions and exports as consumption in the world's biggest beer drinking market falls, Reuters reported on May 12.

The Czech Republic, home of the original Pilsner lager, has the highest per-capita annual beer consumption rate in the world at 144 litres, but the level is down since the global economic crisis of 2008-09.

In what would be Prague's first share issue in three years, Lobkowicz said it would offer up to 5.7 million shares, including 2.3 million new ones, representing a 48.77 percent stake in the country's fifth biggest brewer.

The group said it wanted to use 100 million crowns of the proceeds to buy another brewery with annual output of 80,000 to 100,000 hectolitres, but declined to give more details. It also wants to grow its distribution network in the restaurant sector.

Lobkowicz produced 854,000 hectolitres of beer in 2013 and posted a net loss of 73.8 million crowns on flat revenue of 1.2 billion crowns, of which a fifth came from exports, according to its IPO prospectus.

Brewery news Ukraine: Carlsberg Ukraine stops beer supplies in cities of Kramatorsk and Slavyansk
Carlsberg Ukraine has stopped beer supplies and sales in the east Ukrainian cities of Kramatorsk and Slavyansk over the situation in Ukraine’s eastern regions, the company’s press service told ITAR-TASS on May 13.

“We have stopped supplying and selling beer in Sloviansk and Kramatorsk in order not to put our employees at risk,” the beer producer said in a statement received by ITAR-TASS. Carlsberg Ukraine pledged to resume supplies as soon as the situation in the country’s east gets back to normal though the political crisis in Ukraine certainly has a negative impact on its business.

“The current situation in the east (of Ukraine) is unlikely to produce a positive impact on business of any kind,” the company said in its statement.

Carlsberg Ukraine runs plants in Zaporozhye, Kiev and Lviv. The brand portfolio includes drinks branded as “Lvivske”, “Baltika”, Carlsberg, Tuborg, Arsenal, Slavutich, Zhigulyovskoye bottled in Zaporozhye, Holsten, "Khmilne”, “Kvas Taras”, Somersby, Guinness, Kilkenny, Harp, Warsteiner and Grimbergen.

According to Nielsen, Carlsberg Ukraine had the second biggest share (27.9%) in Ukraine’s beer market. Carlsberg Ukraine’s net income stood at 621 million hryvnias in 2013 while its profit was estimated at 3.47 billion hryvnias.

Brewery news Angola & Sao Tome and Principe: Cuca beer starting shipments to Sao Tome and Principe
The first two containers of cans of Cuca beer, produced at the Sociedade de Bebidas de Angola factory in Catumbela, in Angola’s Benguela province, are due to be shipped in the next two weeks to Sao Tome and Principe, the outgoing factory director, Stephanno Cossito was quoted as saying by Macauhub on May 12.

During the inauguration of the factory’s new beer filling line, Cossito said that the two containers shipped from Angola on or around 15 May were the “first adventure” in the process of internationalisation of the Cuca brand.

The director of the factory, who is due to stand down from his position, noted that an investment of US$33 million by French group Castel in the factory was allowing it to increase production by around 60 percent and improve the quality of the product.

“With this new line the factory has an installed capacity of 77 million litres of beer per year and is able to respond to current and future needs of the region of Benguela and its neighbouring provinces,” he said.
