How to produce your own hop oil

ABSTRACT
There is nothing wrong with traditional dry hopping. It is a mess and a lot of compounds don't get extracted, but the flavours are just great. Of course there is room for optimisation. These German researchers worked with a low pressure carrier gas distilliation to extract the hop oils which were than added in the final beer. The researchers took care to work in a low temperature range in order not to transform the original hop oil components. This system is seen as an alternative for dry hopping. When adding this distillate to a base beer, all important hoppy flavours increased. However, when compared to a conventionally dry hopped beer, some intensity in spicy flavours were missing. Analysis showed that myrcene, caryophyllene and humulene, when compared to the conventionally dry hopped beer, was only present in very low concentrations.

Brewery news USA, MI: Two new breweries to join north Michigan craft beer scene this year
Northern Michigan’s beer scene is continuing to expand this summer in Sutton’s Bay and Traverse City. Two Northern Michigan breweries—Rare Bird Brewery and Hop Lot Brewing Company—are planning to open before summer’s end, and will offer a selection of hand-crafted, Michigan-made beer, MyNorth reported on June 23.

Rare Bird Brewpub isn’t like a typical Northern Michigan brewery. Co-owner and brewer Tina Schuett says this: “we aren’t like other breweries in that we’re the only place that serves our own beer plus 31 taps of beers from all over the world.” Rare Bird was scheduled to have a soft opening on Tuesday, June 24th with a grand opening happening sometime in the near future.

“We also have a full liquor license so we’ll have wine, cider and cocktails.” The soft opening was expected to feature four of their own beers like Large Marge, a Belgian special and Pants Party, an American pale ale.

Hop Lot Brewing Co., the joint efforts of Steve Lutke, Drew Lutke and Luke Johnson, will open in Sutton’s Bay sometime in July. The brewery will feature a tap room, hop and beer garden, and over five acres of land for customers to roam while sipping on one of their ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OH: Canton Brewing Co. committed to launching on December 13
A new brewery launching later this year in downtown Canton is in experienced hands. Brewmaster David Sutula, who’s setting up the Canton Brewing Co., has quite the beer resume, Ohio.com reported on June 20.

In his younger days, he started a little newsletter that eventually grew into the Great Lakes Brewing News. He trained at the Siebel Institute of Technology and also trained in Ireland.

His industry background includes helping start the now-closed Diamondback and John Harvard’s breweries in Cleveland, and working at the Willoughby Brewing Co. in Willoughby and former Crooked River brewery in Cleveland. (Diamondback won a few medals at the Great American Beer Festival while he was there.)

And he authored the book Mild Ale: History, Brewing, Techniques, Recipes.

After a lengthy brewing hiatus when he co-founded and ran a marketing firm with his wife, Sutula, 42, of Jackson Township is jumping back into the industry.

He hooked up with Canton businessman David Beule who was talking about opening a brewery in the community. And he realized that the more they talked, the more he was getting the itch to brew professionally again.

“I said, ‘If you really want to do this, let’s do this and I’ll put it together,’” Sutula said.

Brewery news USA, WI: Sprecher Brewing Co. plans to open expanded beer tasting area
Sprecher Brewing Co. has purchased the building it is leasing as a warehouse in Milwaukee and plans to eventually open an expanded beer tasting area, Milwaukee Business Journal reported on June 23.

The 65,000-square-foot building at 727 Glendale Ave., purchased for $1,865,000, also has several other tenants in the building, which is located behind Sprecher's corporate headquarters in Glendale.

Bill Langhoff, vice president of industrial properties for Colliers International/Wisconsin, brokered the deal. He said the beer and soda manufacturer has been a tenant in the newly purchased building for years as it was used as a warehouse for its finished product and raw materials. The building is also home to Mandel Graphic Solutions, BannerWorks, Dog Tired Daycare, and Schofield Souvenirs.

"They (Sprecher) bought the building with the intention of keeping the tenants for now, but eventually they will be occupying all of it," Langhoff said. "They've been thinking of opening a beer tasting area, which would be an expansion of their tasting room."

The company is also in the middle of a $6 million expansion to its brewery as it rides a larger trend of more people seeking craft-brewed beer, said owner Randy Sprecher in April.

But Sprecher said the brewery expansion will be inadequate ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, ON: Sudbury’s Stack Brewing to mark 1st anniversary with large expansion
Northern Life newspaper reported on June 20 that Sudbury’s Stack Brewing will be marking its 1st anniversary later this month with a party and, more importantly, a large expansion in brewing capacity.

Stack has taken delivery of more than C$250,000 worth new brewing equipment in recent weeks, and once it’s installed and operational, the brewery will be able to increase output by up to 500% if needed.

Stack is currently the only brewery in the Northern Ontario city, and the Sudbury-centric branding of its beers has helped attract a steady and growing demand, making this expansion a necessity.

Brewery news USA, MT: First brewery opens in Kalispell
It's been a long road for Cole Schneider and Maggie Doherty, but the husband and wife team behind the Kalispell brewery have finally opened their doors, NBC Montana reported on June 21.

"People joked what took so long to get open. You know, building a brewery took a lot of work, and we're not in any rush to make any bad beer," said Maggie Doherty.

Doherty is the beer ambassador and co-owner of Kalispell Brewing Company.

Doherty says she's worked in breweries since she was 16, and opening one of her own with her husband has been a dream come true.

"We are, Cole and I, are humbled by this community, we have since day one. People have rallied behind this project, offered their support and encouragement. I think everyone in Kalispell really wanted a brewery and really valued what we did to really salvage this building and stay a part of downtown," Doherty said.

The Kalispell brewery is the only brewery in town, but they have competition in the Great Northern Brewery in Whitefish, who recently won awards for their beer.

But Doherty says she isn't looking to go head to head with other breweries.

"Especially in the Flathead, the community of brewers is ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CA: Jackrabbit Brewing Company in West Sacramento to expand
West Sacramento’s Jackrabbit Brewing Company is making a bunny hop to the big leagues, with plans to expand its brewery and open a public taproom by late September or early October, SacTown Magazine reported on June 23.

In the coming months, Jackrabbit will expand from 1,500 to 4,500 square feet with a public taproom that would be open on the weekends, a front patio and bar area. Launched in 2011, Jackrabbit is currently a production-only brewery that operates out of its location in a West Sacramento business park down the road from Yolo Brewing Company and Bike Dog Brewing Co.

“We have an opportunity to create a unique brewery community right here,” says co-founder Chris Powell. “People can go to three breweries within walking distance of each other, and I think that’s something unique for the whole region.”

Powell says the taproom will maintain the look and feel of the current industrial space, with exposed pipes on the ceilings and polished cement floors. Brewing operations will also grow to include more fermenters, tanks and kegs, with the hopes of having about 10 beers on tap once the brewery is up and running.

Jackrabbit plans a pre-construction kickoff party scheduled for sometime in late July ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, ON: Royal City Brewing already brewing in Guelph
The Guelph Mercury reports that Royal City Brewing is now open and offering growlers and kegs to thirsty Guelphites.

Founded by Russell Bateman and Cameron Fryer, Royal City is concentrating on three flagship brands – Smoked Honey, Dry Hopped Pale Ale and Morning Stout – along with various seasonal and one-off beers such as Gordon Hill Hefeweizen and Gateway IPA.

Royal City beers started appearing on tap at select pubs in the area including Baker St. Station and The Woolwich Arrow in early June, with the brewery taproom and retail store opening at 199 Victoria Road South on June 14th.

As with most new brewery start-ups, demand for Royal City’s beers as been strong, and they are brewing as often as possible to keep up. Regular retail hours 3:00 to 7:00 PM on Thursday and Friday, and 11:00 to 7:00 PM on Saturday.

Brewery news USA, IL: Moody Tongue Brewing Company up and running in Chicago
Moody Tongue Brewing Company, the highly anticipated brewery from former Goose Island Clybourn brewmaster Jared Rouben, is up and running in Chicago, Chicagoist reports.

Rouben, his business partner and cousin Jeremy Cohn, and their crew held a coming out party at Pilsen’s Thalia Hall on June 21 featuring the company’s two beers paired with food from neighborhood eateries, tours of their 10,000 square foot brewhouse and talk of the future.

Moody Tongue is an extension of the “culinary beer” philosophy Rouben developed at Goose Island, with an emphasis on seasonal, farm fresh produce and spices and brewing beers specifically on how they will pair with different types of food. The various food stations at the launch party explained the beer pairings in detail.

Rouben and Cohn have major plans in store for Moody Tongue’s brewhouse. The 20-barrel system is operational along with seven bright tanks, some specifically designed for Rouben to work on his more ambitious beers. Located in a former glass factory that was empty for a quarter century, there are still signs of construction throughout. Cohn said plans are in the works for a bottling line, a taproom and, eventually, a glass-encased kitchen where visitors to the brewery and ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CA: Stumblefoot Brewing Company signs new distribution deal
Stumblefoot Brewing Company has recently signed a distribution deal with Statewide Beverage Company Inc. The distribution company serves as a full service distributor reaching the counties of Orange, Ventura, Santa Barbara, Los Angeles, Riverside, San Bernardino, and San Diego counties, Brewbound reported on June 24.

Stumblefoot Brewing had been self-distributing until now but has expanded from kegs into bottling the latter part of 2013. They have been anticipating its collaboration with the flourishing distribution company.

As quoted from Statewide Beverage Company,

“We are very proud to partner up with Stumblefoot Brewing Company. Bill and his team offer a number of outstanding, award winning beers that we are excited to introduce to the Southern California market. Their Pied a Terre Belgian Style Dubbel, Vixen Dunkelweizen, and Schwarz Black Lager are unique offerings that we feel will be a great treat for craft consumers.”

Additionally, consumers will soon see the Creekside Blonde Lager, OG Grassyass IPA, Questhaven Sour, QuadRaven Sour and the Moho Stout bottled and available on marketplace shelves and taps.

Brewery news USA, MT: Beaverhead Brewing Co. opens its doors in Dillon
Beaverhead Brewing Co. has tapped the kegs and opened its doors, marking the first time since Prohibition Dillon, MT has a legal brewery, The Montana Standard reported on June 22.

Owned by Dillon native Brett Maki, it has an initial offering of seven beers.

Beaverhead Brewing couples big city brewing smarts and a deep commitment to the town of Dillon, Maki says. He’s been searching for a way to get back to Dillon ever since he left his hometown, and his company is just the latest helping fuel resurgence in the small ranching community.

“I’m trying to brew beers that relate to the people of Beaverhead County,” Maki said. “They’re on the lighter side. They’re good, drinkable beers. That’s what I’m trying to do: just good beer.”

But brewing wasn’t even on Maki’s radar in college, where he studied history and political science. He’d planned to be a teacher and a coach.

Maki’s wife, Anna Loge, studied medicine at the University of Washington, which took the couple from Montana to Seattle. A birthday gift of a homebrew kit changed the trajectory of Maki’s life.

Three months after that first homebrew batch, Maki found himself working as the soda brewer at Pyramid Brewing.

“It just happened to be ...More info on site

Brewery news Nigeria: Nigerian beer market potential outweighs security risk - Heineken
Heineken NV, the world’s third-biggest brewer has said the potential of the Nigerian market outweighs the security risk caused by deadly bombings in Africa’s biggest economy, This Day Live reported on June 23.

“We know what it means to have a crisis and insecurity,” the president of the Amsterdam-based company’s Middle East and Africa unit, Siep Hiemstra, said in an interview with Bloomberg TV Africa, citing the company’s experience during civil conflicts in Rwanda and South Africa.

He added: “We also believe that if you are totally focusing on only the challenges and the things that are not going well, you totally lose focus on the promises, and the promises are huge.”

Heineken competes with London-based Diageo Plc and SABMiller Plc in Nigeria, where attacks by the Islamist group Boko Haram have left more than 4,000 people dead in five years.

Hiemstra said no beer company could consider itself truly international without being in Africa, as brewers are looking to tap booming economic growth in emerging markets.

Nigeria is the continent’s most populous country with about 170 million people.

Heineken is awaiting regulatory approval to merge its two Nigeria units, which would combine the country’s industry leader with the number three beer maker.

Brewery news South Korea: Interest in imported beers helps to develop local beer industry
Imported beers have outsold local brands in South Korea during since the opening of the start of the World Cup on June 13, The Korea Times reported on June 20 .

Sales of imported beer jumped 53.3 percent year-on-year between June 13 and 18 at a major discount store. Sales of domestic brands rose 14.1 percent in the same period. Korean squad drew 1-1 with Russia on June 18.

The retailer declined to name its brand, as it does not disclose sales data for specific items.

"During big sports events such as World Cup and Olympics, there is a tendency to consume more beer, imported beer in particular, than ordinary days," a staff member said.

"What is different from the past is that there is greater demand for imported beer backed by the rising interest in foreign beers from people who have experienced various beers abroad."

He said retailers were competing to import more beers than in the past to meet demand.

The increase in foreign brands is prompting local beer-makers to step up efforts to improve quality.

"I think it's a kind of virtuous cycle that is helping to develop the domestic beer market," the official said.

The market share of imported beer increased to 26.4 percent ...More info on site

Brewery news Sierra Leone: Foreign brands threaten effective operations of Sierra Leone Brewery Limited
The influx of different foreign brands of beer and stout is presently threatening the effective operations of the Sierra Leone Brewery Limited that is implementing the local content policy by employing thousands of Sierra Leoneans and using local produce in their production process, according to the Trade marketing Manager, Desmond George.

This information was disclosed during the one-day tour organized for pressmen by the Management of SL Brewery on June 19, Awoko reports.

According to him, SL Brewery is dealing with alcohol and non-alcoholic beverages as their responsibility is to ensure their customers receive pleasure, leisure, enjoyment and entertainment as they are now producing soft drinks as a way of being relevant everywhere, but ‘the influx of different foreign brands in the market is affecting our operations’ he recalled.

Explaining the commitments of SL Brewery within the Wellington community and the country as a whole, the Managing Director, Willy Ngana, disclosed that the company is paying all the various taxes for operating in the country, whereas the other people that are importing various brands are not paying any taxes and are not employing any Sierra Leonean to reduce the issue of unemployment.

He added that SL Brewery is committed to the socio-economic development of ...More info on site

Brewery news World: Heineken launching unprecedented promo campaign for Tiger beer
Heineken is launching an unprecedented bid to transform Tiger beer into an “iconic” global Asian brand by introducing a “cool”, “trendy” positioning it hopes can woo young Asian professionals in Western markets, Marketing Week reported on June 24.

The “Tiger Uncage” campaign is the first for the beer since being snapped up by Heineken in 2012 to secure a stronger foothold in Asia. It said at the time Tiger had potential to become a truly global brand and is now embarking on a “gradual process” to encourage drinkers to embrace an Asian beer in a market dominated by Western brewers.

Heineken’s plan revolves around targeting young Asian men, both domestically and internationally, to capture the region’s character in a way it says runs counter to the norms of how Asian beers have been globalised in the past. Traditional distribution tie-ups with restaurants and sponsorships are being eschewed in favour of deals with trendier bars and content marketing.

Droga5-created activity breaks in the UK and Ireland later this year to push the concept to young Asian professionals. Short films reveal the stories of young Asians following their dreams instead of taking the safe, well-trodden path via an online portal. It is a ...More info on site
