How to produce your own hop oil

ABSTRACT
There is nothing wrong with traditional dry hopping. It is a mess and a lot of compounds don't get extracted, but the flavours are just great. Of course there is room for optimisation. These German researchers worked with a low pressure carrier gas distilliation to extract the hop oils which were than added in the final beer. The researchers took care to work in a low temperature range in order not to transform the original hop oil components. This system is seen as an alternative for dry hopping. When adding this distillate to a base beer, all important hoppy flavours increased. However, when compared to a conventionally dry hopped beer, some intensity in spicy flavours were missing. Analysis showed that myrcene, caryophyllene and humulene, when compared to the conventionally dry hopped beer, was only present in very low concentrations.

Hops news USA: Experts warn of possible hops shortage
In April 1975, San Francisco's Anchor Brewing Co., the only craft brewery in America at the time, introduced a beer that its owner, Fritz Maytag, called Liberty Ale. Its name and label commemorated the 200th anniversary of Paul Revere's ride. But it is remembered for what was in it: generous helpings of Cascade hops, an essential craft-beer ingredient that's now in short supply, The Wall Street Journal reported on June 25.

Cascade hops were the first American-made aroma hops, and Liberty Ale was the first commercial craft-beer to use them. Hops, the flowers of the hop plant, have been since the Middle Ages beer's primary flavoring agent. They are generally added for two reasons: to make beer bitter and to give it a certain bouquet. Before Cascade, only European hops were considered worthy enough to be used for aroma. American hops were used only for bittering.

The citrusy-smelling Cascade changed that. Liberty Ale began what has become in recent years the most popular craft-beer style in the U.S.: the modern India pale ale or IPA. IPAs originated in England in the 19th century. While the English likely added a lot of hops to help keep the beer fresh on long sea voyages ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OR: Oregon’s affinity for local craft beer unprecedentedly high
Oregon’s affinity for local craft beer has reached an unprecedented high, as more than 18 percent of all beer consumed in the state last year was locally produced, according to the Oregon Brewers Guild.

Of the 1.4 million barrels the state’s breweries produced last year—an uptick of 8 percent over the year prior—500,000 were sold to Oregonians, a new in-state sales record.

After adding more than 200 jobs in 2013, the state’s brewing companies now directly employ more than 6,600 people, the Guild added.

Additionally, retail sales of beer produced in the state totaled more than $400 million last year, according to the guild, as the industry at large contributed $2.83 billion to the state’s economy, while also employing “roughly 29,000 people directly and indirectly.”

“We have the largest number of breweries per capita and also the highest percentage of dollars spent on craft beer in the U.S.,” Brian Butenschoen, executive director of the state’s brewer’s guild, said in a statement. “Hood River has a brewery for every 1,433 residents and Portland has more breweries than any other city in the world.”

One of those Hood River breweries is Full Sail Brewing Co., which has been in business since 1987, years before the so-called craft ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MI: Founders Brewing considering expansion to about 600,000 barrels of capacity
Founders Brewing Company, which is based in Grand Rapids, Mich., has grown at a 67 percent compound annual growth rate since 2008, while its on-premise points of distribution are up 61 percent this year. Sales of All Day IPA, Founders’ flagship brand, are up a remarkable 138 percent, Brewbound reported on June 26.

Based on 2013 sales, up 54 percent from the year prior, Founders reached production of 111,000 barrels and is the 26th largest craft brewery in the country, according to the Brewers Association.

With tremendous growth, however, comes the need for additional space. As a result, Founders Brewing co-founder and CEO Mike Stevens has promised to complete an expansion that will take the company to about 600,000 barrels of capacity.

What that expansion will look like is still being decided. Moreover, Founders hasn’t determined whether it will expand in its current footprint or if it will open a secondary brewing facility in another area of Grand Rapids.

“Our intent is to move fast, break ground in a couple of months and have it up and running by next April,” Stevens said. “We are looking at various ‘addresses,’ and will have a decision within the next few weeks.”

One thing is certain: the ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, WI: Titletown Brewing Co. expanding in Green Bay
Titletown Brewing Co. on June 25 put its name on its expansion at Larsen Green in Green Bay, greenbaypressgazette.com reported.

Construction workers added “Titletown” to the smokestack that is part of the former Larsen Canning Co. structures on Broadway being rehabbed by Smet Construction Services and the brewery, partners in the $3.5 million project.

The expansion, which will include a production facility, tap room, offices and other amenities, is 65 percent complete, said Jim Kratowicz, Titletown’s chief operating officer.

New windows will be installed on the Broadway side of the building in about two weeks.

“That’s going to be a huge difference,” Kratowicz said.

The construction timeline calls for the tap room to open in mid-August, followed by onsite brewing on Sept. 1. Some offices will be complete in September as well, followed by retail space in October.

Titletown Brewing opened in 1996 in the former Chicago & North Western Railroad depot on Dousman Street near the west bank of the Fox River. It is a combined microbrewery and restaurant.

Titletown provides draft beer to bars and restaurants, but had not had space for a bottling operation. The new facility will allow it to do so, and distribute its products to a wider audience.

Brewery news Canada, BC: Beacon Brewing already operational in Nelson
British Columbia’s ever-expanding collection of craft breweries has increased by one more, with the quiet opening of new nanobrewery Beacon Brewing in Nelson earlier this week, Canadian Beer News reported on June 26.

Following a low-key launch party at Finley’s Irish Bar and Grill on Saturday, June 21, Beacon opened its doors of its brewery and retail store at 511 Front St. in Nelson to the public on Tuesday June 24th.

Sales are initially limited to a single beer - Beacon Porter – in 1 litre and 2 litre growlers, with a Blonde Ale set to join the Porter on tap soon.

Brewery news USA, WA: Old Schoolhouse Brewery decides to stay small and focus on quality
Old Schoolhouse Brewery (OSB) has made the decision to stay small and focus on quality, said co-owner Casey Ruud. “Our next step would be to build a production brewery, but we’ve chosen not to take that on,” he was quoted as saying by Methow Valley News on June 26.

The rewards for staying small have been a series of awards at beer competitions around the United States, including two gold medals from the recent North American Brewer’s Association competition, and a gold and bronze at last week’s Washington Beer Awards, where OSB was named Small Brewer of the Year in 2013.

“It’s really spectacular to have won those awards,” said Ruud. “I’m really proud of the guys for producing such high quality beer.”

“The guys” doing the brewing have shifted recently, since former brewmaster Blaze Ruud stepped down from that post in March to take a job at Yakima Chief, one of the world’s top hop producers. “They hired him for his nose,” reported his father. Blaze Ruud’s main function at Yakima Chief is to “breed better hops,” Ruud said.

“Blaze is still on our team,” his dad explained. “He’s responsible for getting us the best hops,” which may mean personally delivering the Mosaic ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OH: New brewery to launch in Athens in a year
Two friends who first met many years ago in the sixth grade at East Elementary School hope to have a new microbrewery in production in Athens, Ohio a year from now, Athens Messenger reported on June 26.

Little Fish Brewing Co., to be located at Armitage Road on property that is being annexed into the city, is a project of Sean White and Jimmy Stockwell.

"We are excited to offer Athens some more local beer to consume, as well as another place to imbibe and socialize outside the Court Street area," White said in a news release announcing their plans.

In addition to the production facility, plans will include a small taproom.

The 2-acre site will have space for gardens to grow fruit and botanicals for use in the microbrewery.

Stockwell previously worked as a scientist for Diagnostic Hybrids Inc.

"Part of the long-term beer plan will be to put his microbiology skills to use to cultivate local microflora for use in some of the specialty beers and oak barrel aged sours," the news release states.

White previously brewed in Oregon for Alameda Brewing Co. and Cascade Brewing Co., and moved back to Athens in 2012 to work for Jackie O's as a pub brewer after their ...More info on site

Brewery news World: Beer can be enjoyed at the lowest price in the world in Ukraine
Eastern Europe and Asia are the places to be for beer drinkers on a budget. A bottle of brew will set you back less than a buck in Ukraine, Czech Republic, Serbia and Bulgaria, Vietnam, China and Cambodia.

On the other hand, if you order a brew in Iran and you'll pay through the nose - $7.71 per bottle, the highest price in the world. And given that the nation bans the public sale and consumption of alcohol, chances are the beer in question is weak sauce.

Extolling the health benefits of hops, FinancesOnline investigated the tab for a bottle of beer throughout the world, coming up with the cheapest and most expensive places to drink. And, by examining the average amount consumed, the site calculated which nations' citizens pay the most annually and the average amount they pay.

Americans neither pay the highest nor lowest cost per bottle, according to the site. But the nation ranks 7th in the total amount spent. Given the cost of a bottle and the amount Americans drink, the average American spends $356 annually on beer. Australians pay the most -- $748 annually, thanks to a combination of heavy thirst and heady beer prices.

Brewery news The Czech Republic: Brewers make up for stagnant domestic sales by going to other markets
In Nachod, a 700-year-old Czech town on the Polish border, Primator Brewery kegs waited to be loaded on containers bound for Kazakhstan while export manager Lenka Krausova fielded queries from as far away as Vietnam.

Five years after the municipality sold Primator to privately held Liberec Investment Fund, the beermaker is trying to make up for stagnant domestic sales by going beyond traditional European markets to build on export sales that have already quadrupled in the past decade, Bloomberg reported on June 26.

“There’s been enormous interest from markets we’ve previously never heard from,” said Krausova. “We see a huge potential in those new countries.”

As the summer season begins to sizzle, Czech brewers like SABMiller Plc’s Plzensky Prazdroj AS, the maker of Pilsner Urquell, Primator, Budejovicky Budvar NP and Molson Coors Brewing Co.’s Pivovary Staropramen AS, are lining up against other international brands to win over drinkers in former Soviet republics to the east and Asia. Czech beermakers are betting they have an edge with campaign ads that tout European Union-protected Czech Beer and props such as 49-foot-tall wooden goats made by the maker of Pilsner Urquell that resemble Trojan Horses.

The success in finding a foothold in more-exotic destinations will depend on ...More info on site

Brewery news Brazil: Beer production on the rise but Ambev shares value declines
Brazil’s beer production is up. And yet the biggest beer maker in the country is down. For a defensive stock, in a weak market, smack dab in the middle of the FIFA World Cup, Ambev has to be one of the biggest disappointments going for Brazil investors, Forbes reported on June 26.

With the exception of the last five days, Ambev has underperformed the Brazilian stock exchange. It’s even underperformed Petrobras, which is arguably the most hated stock in Brazil despite having a fairly decent year in terms of equity gains.

Ambev is down 5% over the last month. And it is falling against a backdrop of rising beer sales, and higher prices for that beer, too.

Brazilian beer makers produced 3.2 billion litres of beer in the second quarter of the year in preparation for the World Cup, 12% more than it did last year, according to industry group CervBrasil. Estado de Sao Paulo’s Broadcast news agency reported on June 26 that industry was going through an “endless summer”. It’s winter in Brazil at the moment. But that endless summer is not paying off for Ambev shareholders. The surf is definitely not up.

On June 25, pollsters at Brazilian firm Ibope Repucom said ...More info on site

Brewery news South Korea & China: Oriental Brewery to start exporting its flagship beer to China
Oriental Brewery will begin exporting its flagship beer Cass to China from the second half of this year by using the sales network of its parent company Anheuser-Busch InBev, The Chosun Ilbo reported on June 27.

AB InBev, the world's largest brewer, acquired OB back in January some five years after it sold it to KKR and Affinity in 2009.

"AB InBev is producing Harbin and Sedrin, which are the third and fourth largest beer brands in the Chinese market," OB CEO Jang In-soo said. "If we take advantage of this network, we think we can fare well in China."

OB is already exporting US$150 million worth of beer to Hong Kong and Japan each year.

Brewery news Portugal: Trade court upholds decision preventing AB InBev from registering its beer under Budweiser name
The Czech brewery Budvar says a Portuguese trade court has upheld a decision preventing its rival Anheuser-Busch InBev from registering its beer under the Budweiser name in the country, Brandon Sun reported on June 26.

State-owned Budejovicky Budvar NP has been fighting with Anheuser-Busch for over a century over use of the Budweiser name. The legal battle continued when Anheuser-Busch was taken over by Belgium's InBev in 2008.

The Czech company said on June 26 the appeals court in Lisbon rejected AB InBev's challenge to a December trade court ruling because its Budweiser trademarks could be mistaken for those Budvar had already registered in Portugal.

Budvar says the verdict is final. The court could not be immediately reached for confirmation.

AB InBev spokeswoman Karen Couck says the ruling doesn't affected sales of the company's BUD brand in Portugal.

Brewery news Nigeria: Consumers increasingly opting for premium beer brands
As consumers increasingly adjust spending from premium to value brands, Nigerian brewery companies are also redirecting attention and production to suit their preferences, Business Day reported on June 23.

Premium brands are products that carry tangible or imaginary surplus value in the upper-mid to high-price range. They often target high-income customer group, who are often referred to as “premium.” They are designed to convey an impression of exclusiveness, especially in the mass markets. On the other hand, value or low-cost brands are cheaper and can be afforded by all the classes of consumers, particularly low-income persons.

The Nigerian brewery industry is made up of key players such as the Nigerian Breweries (NB) plc, which is a subsidiary of Heineken; Consolidated Breweries plc, which will soon begin a combination with NB plc; Guinness Nigeria plc, Champion Breweries, and SABMiller, which acquired an interest in Pabod Breweries and took operational control of the Castel Nigerian business and International Breweries.

Unlike before when brewers were only focused on premium products, the industry is currently trending towards unveiling low-cost brands to accommodate low-income earners, analysts have observed.

NB has value brands such as Life and Goldberg, unlike Heineken and Legend that are considered premium brands. Guinness, on the ...More info on site
