Brewery news USA: AB InBev creating new premium beer business in the US
Anheuser-Busch InBev (AB InBev) is creating a new business unit in the United States devoted to premium beers as it tries to improve its presence in a fast-growing segment of the beer market, Reuters reported on August 6.

With young drinkers increasingly interested in spirits and other drinks, the U.S. beer market shrank 1.9 percent in 2013 to 196.2 million barrels, according to the Brewers Association trade group. Yet "craft" beers, or those made by small, independent brewers, rose 17.2 percent.

The new unit, which will include AB InBev brands such as Goose Island and Blue Point, will be based in Chicago, which places it "in closer touch with urban consumers, their way of thinking, lifestyle and the accounts they visit," said an internal announcement made on August 6 and seen by Reuters.

It will be led by Felipe Szpigel, who joined the brewer 15 years ago as a global management trainee.

AB InBev, the world's largest brewer, is not alone in trying to accelerate sales of beers that are more profitable and appeal to more discerning drinkers.

MillerCoors, the combined US operations of SABMiller and Molson Coors, has a unit called Tenth and Blake, which promotes its premium beers Blue Moon, Jacob Leinenkugel and ...More info on site

Brewery news USA: AB InBev to launch new Mexican Montejo beer in September
Anheuser-Busch InBev is set to launch a new brand in the U.S. market’s thriving Mexican beer category. The brewing giant will introduce Montejo—produced by AB InBev subsidiary Grupo Modelo—in California, Texas, Arizona and New Mexico starting in September, Shanken News Daily reported on August 7.

The newcomer will go head-to-head with fellow Modelo brands Corona and Modelo Especial—which are controlled by Constellation in the U.S. market—as well as Heineken’s Mexican stable, including Dos Equis and Tecate. Mexican beer shipments to the U.S. rose 4.6% in 2013, according to Impact Databank, comprising 58% of the total imported beer market.

Additionally, AB InBev is planning to shift management of its premium craft and imported beers from its U.S. headquarters in St. Louis to a new divisional office in Chicago, Advertising Age reported on August 5. While there were no details on the exact timing of the move or exactly where the new offices will be located, the Chicago division reportedly will be headed by Felipe Szpigel, who’s set to relocate from New York, where he’s been vice president of trade marketing. Adam Oakley, the St. Louis-based vice-president of import, craft and specialty brands, is also expected to move to Chicago. Ad Age also ...More info on site

Brewery news USA: Craft Brew Alliance reports Q2 financial results
Craft Brew Alliance, Inc., an independent craft brewing company, on August 6 reported its financial results for the quarter ended June 30, 2014.

The results for the second quarter are in line with management's expectations, and the company confirms previously reported 2014 guidance, it said.

CBA's distinctive portfolio strategy continued to drive depletion growth in the second quarter, resulting in a 9% increase in depletions for the first half of 2014. Increased demand for CBA's well-loved brands, including Kona Brewing, Redhook Brewery and Omission, and the introduction of new favorite beers, such as Redhook KCCO Black Lager, led to a 17% increase in net sales and a 15% increase in total beer shipments in the first six months. The brewer’s gross margin rate increased by 230 basis points to 32.8% in the second quarter, which contributed to a 240 basis point increase and 30.3% gross margin rate year-to-date. CBA attributes the increase to significant advancements in its brewery efficiency and utilization and supply chain.

Year to date 2014 financial highlights

Depletion volume grew 9% over the first six months of 2013. Net sales and total beer shipments grew 17% and 15%, respectively, in the six-month period ended June 30, ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MN: Lake Monster Brewing to open microbrewery in St. Paul next spring or summer
Lake Monster Brewing plans to open a 10,000-square-foot microbrewery and taproom in an old warehouse at 558 Vandalia St. in St. Paul, Business Journal reported on August 7.

Lake Monster debuted in September 2013. Its Empty Rowboat IPA and Calhoun Claw Pilsner beers are sold in about 50 liquor stores and 25 to 30 bars and restaurants in the Twin Cities.

Lake Monster currently brews and bottles its beer through Sand Creek Brewing in Black River Falls, Wis.

The new facility will open next spring or summer with seating for about 150 people, Lake Monster Founder and President Matt Zanetti said. The 3,000-square-foot taproom will be complemented by an outdoor patio.

Production equipment will take up most of the remaining space. The microbrewery would have capacity to brew about 3,500 barrels of beer per year but could be expanded later.

Zanetti, 38, pulled back from his career as a real estate landlord and developer to start the brewery. He credited Brewmaster Matt Lange for creating beers that stand out among a throng of local beer companies.

“Brewing is continuing to boom in Saint Paul and I congratulate Lake Monster on joining this diverse and growing industry in our city,” Mayor Chris Coleman said in a ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MA: Notch Brewing looking for Boston-area location
Last week, Notch Brewing founder Chris Lohring thought that he’d finally found a location where he could build his company’s first production facility, Brewboud reported on August 6.

Lohring, who launched Notch as a contract craft brand in 2010, had already visited a dozen properties in Salem, Mass., a coastal town located about 40 minutes north of Boston. He was negotiating lease agreements at three of those locations, but each time the deal fell through.

“If you talked to me last week, I would have said we’d have a brewery in nine months,” he said. “After this latest building fell through, it is looking like another year.”

Salem, a tourist destination with a vibrant arts scene, would be the perfect place for Notch to build its 10-barrel brewery and beer garden tasting room, said Lohring, who also resides in town.

“We’d be piggybacking on what already exists here,” he said. “But if you can’t find a space that works financially, you have to walk away.”

So Lohring, who plans to invest upwards of $500,000 in the project, said he’s now also considering locations in surrounding towns like Lynn, Beverly and Peabody.

A new production facility would allow Notch, which currently produces its beer under contract at ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NC: Atwater Brewing and city of Wilmington agree on conditions for building new brewery
The city of Wilmington and Atwater Brewing have agreed to conditions that must be met for the Detroit-based brewery to build a plant in Wilmington, Star News Online reported on August 7.

Mayor Bill Saffo and Atwater said in April that the expanding craft brewer was interested in locating a regional facility in the city and that Wilmington would be in competition with other cities.

Atwater owner Mark Rieth indicated in a letter to the city that any agreement is subject to the company getting financing at reasonable terms and the proper zoning.

City spokesman Dylan Lee confirmed the letter to the city from Rieth and emphasized the importance of financing and zoning.

Atwater indicated in the letter, dated May 15, that if conditions were met, it planned to build a 65,000-square-foot full-serice brewery, create a minimum of 30 full-time positions at or above the North Carolina average wage and make a capital investment of at least $5 million.

For Atwater to locate here, the city would have to gain control of a parcel at 900 N. Second St. and combine it with an adjacent property to total more than 84,000 square feet. The city would sell or lease the site to Atwater for fair ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, ON: Bellwoods Brewery to set up a new production facility over the next year and a half
Bellwoods Brewery on August 6 announced that it will be expanding operations to slake Toronto’s perishing thirst for craft beer. Over the next year and a half, the brewery will set up a new production facility in an old warehouse near the corner of Dupont Street and Dovercourt Road.

The Bellwoods brewpub opened on Ossington Avenue in April 2012 and quickly became a popular neighbourhood haunt—so popular, in fact, that the brewery was forced three times last year to close its bottle shop because it had sold every bottle. To keep up with demand, Bellwoods will be opening a new production brewery and barrel room at 950 Dupont St., which will allow for increased production of barrel-aged beers and greater availability. The original brewpub will remain, but with more tank space freed up, allowing Bellwoods to produce smaller runs of bottle-conditioned suds.

The majority of the new space will be devoted to production, although there will be a restaurant and tasting room on site, as well as small event areas. The building itself will need to be restored before the brewers can move in. On their website, Bellwoods noted that despite their increased capacity, they will remain a “relatively small microbrewery,” although ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, IL: Berghoff Brewery looking to expand
When it comes to beer, the almost 27-year-old owner of the 127-year-old Berghoff Brewery believes that old trumps new any day, Journal Sentinel reported on August 7.

"No one wants your dad's beer, (but) having grandpa's beer is cool," said Ben Minkoff, whose family owns General Beverage Distributors and acquired the Berghoff brand in 1994. "We had this history and legacy that people know. We want to bring back that nostalgia."

The problem with Minkoff's vision when he took control in 2011 was that the "nostalgia" of the Berghoff name had been tarnished as the brand changed hands and recipes were altered over the years.

So some sprucing up was in order, including restoring its image as a premium brand.

"Before (when Berghoff six-packs were selling for about $6), we were getting a completely different drinker than we have now," Minkoff said. "They know the name, but they have to figure it out again because we changed the liquid and the package."

And the price. Now, customers pay $2 to $3 more for a Berghoff six-pack.

One year after Berghoff's revival, which began with revamping labeling with color and detail and experimenting with flavors, it's working. The brand, brewed under an "alternating proprietorship" arrangement at a ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MI: Farmington Brewing Co. will possibly open in September in Farmington
Renovations are underway for a brewery that's coming to Grand River Avenue in downtown Farmington, Southeast Michigan Start Up reported on August 8.

Farmington Brewing Co. will open, possibly in September, at 33336 Grand River in a space previously occupied by a coffee shop. The renovations of the 1,600-square-foot space will make room for beer-making barrels and a bar that runs the length of half the space.

Four, five-barrel fermenters will be just behind be the bar and be the focal point of the room.

"Our equipment will be directly behind our bar. We think it adds to the ambiance of the space to have all the equipment there. We will not be brewing during serving hours, but customers will see where we do the work," says Jason Hendricks, partner in Farmington Brewing Co. with Jason Schlaff and his father Gary Schlaff.

Hendricks and Jason Schlaff started home-brewing beer about five years ago, says Hendricks.

The two are environmental scientists and chemists, while Gary Schlaff works in marketing for a TV station.

"We started out as home brewers and began experimenting more and more and developing the recipes of beer we like to drink," Hendricks says. "As friends and family started to enjoy it along with ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, FL: Tequesta Brewing Co building additional brewery in Palm Beach Gardens
Tequesta Brewing Co, a small production brewery in Tequesta that grew from a modest brewpub at the Corner Cafe and Brewery and then into its own microbrewery next door, has begun construction on an additional brewery at the corner of PGA Boulevard and Ellison Wilson in Palm Beach Gardens, Broward Palm Beach New Times reported on August 6.

Co-owner and brewer Matt Webster posted a picture to his Facebook page showing the beginning stages of construction on the new digs. The 5,700-square-foot space with 15 3/4-foot ceilings on the corner of PGA Boulevard and Ellison Wilson Road is bigger than the 3,200-square-foot building with only 11-foot ceilings at their original location.

According to co-owner Fran Andrewlevich, construction should be done by December. Andrewlevich said that production at the original brewery has been maxed out for several years and that he and Webster have been planning to build an additional space. All it took was finding the right spot.

"We are still keeping the old space," he said. "It's still business as usual here, and business couldn't be better.

"We're going to keep it as simple as we can. Just trying to keep to small."

Even so, within the first year, Andrewlevich hopes to double production. ...More info on site
