For your health, marinate your steak in beer!

ABSTRACT
This might sound as a joke but it is true! Portuguese researchers have looked into the effect of different beer types as meat marinates in regard to the formation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). All beer types tested (Black Beer, Pilsner and a non-alcohol Pilsner) showed inhibitory effects on PAH formation (which are to see in context with cancer). The effect increased with the increase of their radicals-cavenging activity. Stay healthy, insist on beer marinated meat!

Barley news United States: Malting firms still waiting to release malting barley contracts for next year
Although Busch Ag is still in the electronic bidding process for 2015 malting barley contracts, the other malting firms are still waiting to release malting barley contracts for next year's production, Farm & Ranch Guide reported on November 10.

The only exception to that is a small amount of acres were contracted by Miller/Coors in North Dakota, according to Kayla Burkhart, grain merchandiser for CHS Sun Prairie Grain in Minot, N.D. This action fulfils a decision that Miller/Coors made a couple months ago to spread out their contracted acreage to other barley producing areas.

It has been reported, Burkhart noted, that the prices for the electronic bidding have generally been in the $4.75 to $5 a bushel range.

"I don't think a lot of growers will want to take out a contract for less than $5 a bushel, but Rahr hasn't come out with their program yet," Burkhart said. "Each week we hear it should be coming out this week, but as of now, that hasn't happened."

The cash prices for both feed and malting barley are holding steady, according to Burkhart. In the case of malting barley, the maltsters are still evaluating their supply of barley, and focusing on malting some of the ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, BC: Mission Springs Brewery opened two bars in South Korea and plans to open more
Mission Springs Brewery opened two bars in the South Korean capital of Seoul last year — in the city's trendy Itaewon and Gangnam neighbourhoods — and says it will soon open another, CBC News reported on November, 7.

Sales manager Ian Rodgers says he's seen a surge in demand for craft beer in South Korea.

"Our Itaewon store is packed every single night, and there is about maybe four other craft brewery locations around us, it's kind of a little micro-neighbourhood that we have, and they are all really busy," Rodgers said.

Mission Springs ships anywhere from 2,000 to 4,000 litres of beer to Seoul each month, which is around a quarter of the brewery's total production.

Rodgers says it's cheaper to ship the beer than it would be to open a brewery in Seoul, largely because of recyclable plastic kegs that are much cheaper and lighter than traditional metal kegs. "It's about a 20-litre keg, and the product stays fresh for about a year in it," Rodgers says.

Mission Springs isn't the only B.C. brewery to find a market overseas, as Phillips Brewing exports to Japan and Russell Brewing exports to China.

Brewery news USA, MN: Lupulin Brewing to open in 2015
The founders of Big Lake-based Lupulin Brewing, working with Boser Construction, were joined by state and local officials and honored guests to officially break ground Friday, Oct. 31, on Lupulin’s new craft brewery and tap room, Monticello Times reported on November, 8.

Lupulin Brewing is a 10-barrel craft brewery and taproom slated to open in the first quarter of 2015. Lupulin’s brewing philosophy is to create rich, full flavored beers with particular focus on hop forward and Belgian styles.

“What started as a dream almost 20 years ago started to become at least a possibility after purchasing my first homebrew kit in 2010,” said Jeff Zierdt, Lupulin Brewing co-founder and president.

Zierdt said Lupulin Brewing’s goal is to become a part of the regional business community within Big Lake, Elk River, Becker, Otsego and Monticello and to create a destination for people to visit.

Big Lake Mayor Raeanne Danielowski provided an official city welcome at the event. “We couldn’t be happier to have Lupulin Brewing call Big Lake their home,” Danielowski said.

Brewery news USA, CA: Track 7 Brewing Co. to expand
Track 7 Brewing Co. started construction on its brewery expansion in Sacramento, California, areadevelopment.com reported on November, 7. The company intends for this new 35,000 square foot facility to serve as its core manufacturing, packaging and distribution facility, as well as house a second tasting room and office space to accommodate the explosion of product demand.

The new brewery will feature an additional 4,000 square foot tasting room with a 1,500 square foot outdoor landscaped patio area. The five-vessel 30-barrel brewhouse comprising the heart of the manufacturing plant will include twin 30-barrel kettles and mash-lauter tuns. When fully operational, the brewhouse is capable of producing 480 barrels of beer per day.

"While we broke ground at our Natomas facility yesterday, construction activities have been underway for the past eight weeks. We are 100 percent complete on our cellar tanks and about 85 percent complete on the brewhouse fabrication. The equipment, fabricated by Marks Design and Fabrication in Vancouver, Washington, will be on-site by early December," stated Co-owner Ryan Graham.

Track 7 Brewing Co. was established in 2011 and has grown from 340 barrels of beer in its opening year to just under 1,200 barrels of beer in 2013. This year ...More info on site

Barley news Ireland: Malting barley growers protest against being “pressurized by Diageo”
Malting barley growers protested on November 10 outside Guinness in Dublin, saying they are ‘frustrated’ with how they are being dealt with over prices and specifications, Agriland reported.

Over 100 malting barley growers protested outside the Diageo-owned Guinness site in Dublin.

A spokesperson for the group said they were feeling “pressurised” by Guinness over changes to specifications to grain this year. “This is a last resort for us today, but we have to get the message to the people that we are supplying.

“The specification changes meant growers had no confidence in forward selling. Further, with contracts not being sent out until the end of May, farmers were in a difficult position. Seed was out in January, so contracts and changes should be presented to farmers before they sow a crop,” he said.

“Over 100 growers attended today and we handed in a letter outlining the issues for the growers, including the changes we have had to specification. We were there today out of frustration and not being negotiated with properly and we feel pressurised by Diageo.

“We outlined in the letter that specification changes are very difficult to deal with, including that we are using older seeds varieties that have limited yields.” He said ...More info on site

Brewery news South Korea: Oriental Brewery launches premium all-malt beer
Oriental Brewery, South Korea’s largest beer manufacturer, launched a new premium all-malt beer in a move to increase its stake in the fast-growing premium beer market, The Korea Herald reported on November 11.

At a news conference on November 11, it unveiled The Premier OB, a thick all-malt beer made of German noble hops and premium yeast.

“The Premier OB is the combined result of OB’s 80-year brewing history and its devotion to creating better taste,” said OB CEO Chang In-soo.

The new product is an upgraded version of OB’s Golden Lager, which is currently the third best-selling beer in Korea. The Premium OB also benchmarked rival all-malt beer brands such as Hite Jinro’s Max and Lotte Liquor’s Kloud.

“The Premier OB was created by applying a long-term aging technology to our OB Golden Lager to get a denser flavor and richer aroma,” said OB chief marketing officer Alex Song.

The company also used a different fort and logo for The Premier OB to distinguish it from OB Golden Lager, Song said.

“Korean consumers used to prefer light-flavored beer, but their palates seem to have changed and diversified over the years,” Song said. “Our No. 1 brand Cass fits the existing conventional customer needs, but it ...More info on site
