UK: Molson Coors’ Burton brewery still not working
|
Bosses at a Burton brewing giant have confirmed that production at a £1 million micro-brewery in Burton has still not resumed, Burton Mail reported on February 5.
Molson Coors chiefs said efforts to improve working conditions at the William Worthington Brewery, based at the National Brewery Centre, in Horninglow Street, are still continuing and no date has yet been set for it to reopen.
Production was ‘temporarily paused’ in April last year while senior figures worked on several ‘safety’ improvements across the site.
A spokesman for Molson Coors said: “The Worthington brand is an important part of our Burton heritage and our brewing future.”
A major review was sparked to look at how machinery could be ’reconfigured to make brewing, cleaning and maintenance easier’ at the site, which opened in 2010 with a blaze of publicity.
The company is still using existing stocks of the brewery’s beers and bosses confirmed that historic ales such as Worthington’s White Shield are now being brewed at the firm’s main Station Street site in the town to ensure they will still be available for customers.
A spokesman for Molson Coors said: “We haven’t stopped production and packaged beer is available as normal.”

Japan: Asahi Breweries January beer sales decline 8% yoy

Asahi Breweries reports its overall beer sales declined by 8% in January as compared to the same month in 2014.
Ordinary beer sales declined by 8%, new genre beer-like beer sales fell by 14% but happoshu sales managed to grow by 5%.
Sales declined through all the company’s brands, with Asahi Off the only exception – the brand’s volume grew by 3.1% last month.

Australia’s beer and spirits companies say wine companies aren’t paying their fair share of the A$6 billion in alcohol taxes collected each year by the federal government, The Australian Financial Review reported on February 5.
The wine industry is pleading special circumstances, arguing its 2500 companies shouldn’t be taxed more because it has one production cycle a year, following grape harvest in February and March.
Intense lobbying is happening in Canberra for favourable treatment in the May budget, creating angst between rival parts of the alcohol industry.
The latest increase in excise on beer and spirits, on February 2, has further riled beer and spirits makers. Spirits companies argue that for a bottle of spirits selling for A$75, they pay A$30 in federal tax through excise and GST, which is a big impost and distorts the choices available to shoppers.
Beer consumption in Australia has dropped by more than 8 per cent in the past six years. Japan: Suntory Holdings Ltd aims to double revenue at its Beam business

Japan's Suntory Holdings Ltd aims to double revenue at its Beam spirits business to $10 billion in five years as it capitalises on the growing popularity of drinks like whisky and bourbon and forays further into developing markets, its new president was quoted as saying by Reuters on February 5.
Suntory last year bought U.S. bourbon maker Beam for $16 billion, propelling the company to rank No. 3 in the global spirits market after Diageo and Pernod Ricard.
The company, the first to bring single malt whisky to Japan in the 1920s, has set itself ambitious growth plans - aiming for a near doubling of overall revenue to 4 trillion yen ($34 billion) by 2020 compared to levels expected for last year.
Former president Nobutada Saji had said another acquisition may be necessary to help meet that goal, but Takeshi Niinami said the jump in popularity of so-called brown liquors had meant much of that growth could be achieved without a big purchase.
