Brewery news Canada, BC: Howe Sound Brewing purchases R&B Brewing
In a move that seemed to fly under the radar of the usually attentive BC craft beer scene, Squamish’s Howe Sound Brewing has purchased Vancouver’s R&B Brewing. The deal went unreported for nearly two weeks before being revealed by Vancouver Beer Club earlier this week, Canadian Beer News reported on April 17.

When contacted by CBN for comment, Howe Sound Vice President Trevor Magee confirmed that the deal closed on April 1, and original owners Rick Dellow & Barry Benson have stayed on as employees.

“We have placed some of our key people at the facility, and Rick & Barry are assisting us with operations under our management,” says Magee. “It is our intention to preserve, brew and promote the R&B brands that have great loyalty in the Vancouver market.”

This purchase is the second move by Howe Sound to gain a foothold in the Vancouver market, following last year’s opening of Devil’s Elbow Ale & Smoke House, a pub and BBQ restaurant owned by the brewery that serves a full range of Howe Sound brands along with a few local guest taps.

Brewery news USA, VA: Spencer Devon Brewing opens on April 24
Spencer Devon Brewing will open for business on April 24, Fredericksburg reported.

Owner Shawn Phillips, who has worked on opening the downtown Fredericksburg restaurant and brewery for more than a year, will hold a ribbon cutting at 5 p.m., followed by dinner service.

Master brewer John Ritenour and assistant brewer and events coordinator Mariah Gavin have been working since February to brew the first seven beers offered: 3-4-5 Pilsner, Rappahannock River Water Brown Ale, Rocko’s Milk Stout, Bitter Sweet IPA, Fall Line APA, Olde Towne Ale and Sunken Road Belgian Blonde.

Ritenour said their goal with the brewery is “to make a beer for everyone.”

The restaurant is located in the former Fatty J’s space at 106 George St. “If I could give people the sense of community I felt during the build-out, that would be phenomenal,” Phillips said.

Cunningham said the brewery is participating in a grain share with those farms, in which spent grain from Spencer Devon is used to feed animals. He said it helps that community “come full circle.”

Brewery news Canada, ON: Guelph's Wellington Brewery to expand
In order to keep the taps flowing, Wellington Brewery in Guelph has been brewing 24 hours a day, seven days a week for the past two years to meet the growing demand for craft beer in Ontario, CBC reported on April 22.

Now, the company is hoping to meet that demand with a 12,000-square-foot expansion of its Woodlawn Road facility next year.

Vice president Brent Davies says there's so much demand for beer, the company has not been able to build up inventory.

"We have purchased a state of the art canning line, bottling line and labeler and a new brewhouse," said Davies. "The beer is brewed there and then it's transferred from the brewhouse to the fermenters, ferments for about 14 days, then we package it."

With the new expansion, Wellington should be able to do in four days and 16-hour shifts what they're now doing in seven days, working 24 hours a day, Davies said.

The company, which has been brewing beer for nearly 30 years, currently has 45 employees, although Davies believes it will be hiring more people in a variety of departments such as production, marketing and sales.

Now, Wellington brews about 27,000 hl a year, which is the ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MD & OH: DuClaw Brewing Company to expand into Cleveland, Ohio
The Baltimore-based DuClaw Brewing Company announced this week its plans to expand its distribution into Cleveland and will soon make 35 craft beer varieties available to northeast Ohio residents in stores throughout the city, Clevescene reports on April 23rd.

Famed for its unique flavors, DuClaw's move into Ohio will mark its ninth state of distribution.

“Cleveland is the perfect city for us to begin expansion into Ohio,” Founder Dave Benfield said in a press release. “Our growth into the state is a huge step in our mission to bring quality-brewed craft beer to the masses, and to get DuClaw into the hands of our loyal fans.”

DuClaw products are planned to appear in stores in Cleveland around May.

Brewery news USA, WI: Lazy Monk Brewing to expand in Eau Claire, Wisconsin
On April 22 the Eau Claire Waterways and Parks Commission approved the conditional use permit for Lazy Monk Brewing to move its German-style beer hall into the old Charlson's building on Madison Street, WEAU reports.

Lazy Monk opened on Putnam Street in 2011, and owners say it's grown so much they need a bigger space.

"We've just been growing, the craft beer market is exploding around the country and we're very excited in Eau Claire because our tap room has been growing and our beer distribution has been growing and it's all about community and sharing that with our community," explains Lazy Monk owner Theresa Frank.

The measure goes to the Eau Claire Plan Commission next, then to the full Eau Claire City Council.

If all goes as planned, construction on the new location could begin as soon as June 1st, with the goal of opening by Christmas.

Brewery news USA, HI: Kona Brewing Co. to boost capacity to 100 thousand bbl through new Hawaii brewery
Kona Brewing Co. plans to invest in a new $15 mln Hawaii brewery that will boost its annual production capacity from 12,000 barrels to 100,000 barrels, Associated Press reports on April 23.

Much of the facility will produce beer packaged in cans for Hawaii distribution, the Honolulu Star-Advertiser reported on April 23. It will also make all of Kona Brewing's draft beer for local consumption.

The brewery is expected to come online in two years.

Kona Brewing currently produces all its draft beer sold in Hawaii at its Hawaii Island brewery. But it ships its bottled beer to the islands from the mainland because manufacturing and shipping costs make shipping bottled beer to Hawaii cheaper than shipping empty beer bottles.

Mattson Davis, chairman of the Kona Brewing advisory board, said the company is discussing where to put the facility. Sites on Hawaii, Oahu and Maui islands are being considered.

"We've been waiting a long time for technology to catch up with our vision for efficient and sustainably minded brewing and packaging in Hawaii," he said. "We're really excited."

Davis said bottled beer made by the company will still be distributed in Hawaii given the preference of some consumers. But an almost 20-year practice of Kona Brewing ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, SK: 9 Mile Legacy Brewing opened in Saskatoon
Global News reports that a Nanobrewery founded by two long-time amateur brewers has opened its doors in Saskatoon.

9 Mile Legacy Brewing is the culmination of many years of collaborative homebrewing between partners Shawn Moen and Garrett Pederson.

Named after the fact that their respective families once owned farms nine miles apart near Swift Current, 9 Mile Legacy is located in a business incubator space in the Riversdale neighborhood near the Saskatoon Farmers’ Market, and features a compact 150-litre brewhouse where the duo will be brewing a rotating line-up of ales, with up to four available at any given time.

The brewery opened for growler sales on April 15.

Brewery news Canada, BC: Gladstone Brewing to expand in Courtenay, British Columbia
Barely three months after opening, Gladstone Brewing has announced plans to expand in order to keep up with demand for growlers, and to offer food to those who stop by to enjoy a pint on-site, Canadian Beer News reports on April 22.

As reported by the Comox Valley Echo, construction started earlier this month on the expansion into a neighboring unit which will house a new larger growler station.

The brewery intends to have the new growler station open in early May.

Brewery news Canada, ON: Highlander Brew Co. to launch a crowdfunding campaign for its new brewery in South River, Ontario
Highlander Brew Co. has announced the launch of a campaign to help it raise funds for an ambitious brewery move and expansion, with a series of exclusive beers planned to be brewed for supporters, Canadian Beer News reported on April 20.

As announced last November, the Federal Economic Development Initiative for Northern Ontario (FedNor) is providing a grant for the construction of an 8,500 square foot complex that is intended to be a community and tourist hub for the village of South River. The anchor of the complex will be the new Highlander facility, which will be a “a Destination Brewery that will encourage tourism in the area and provide a focal point for music, arts and social events,” and will also provide training space for a new Brewery Technician program that is being started by a local college.

In order to fund the move and expansion, Highlander is looking to raise C$100,000 via an Indiegogo campaign, and among the perks for contributors is a series of four seasonal beers to be available starting in the spring of 2016.

The company’s debut beer, Tuque Dorée, is a 4.5% abv “Canadian Pale Ale” that is being brewed under contract at Kichesippi Beer while Malboeuf scouts locations for a bricks-and-mortar brewery.

The first pints of beer will be poured on Friday May 1 at O’Reilly’s in Perth and Schnitzels in Cornwall. Deliveries to other establishments in the region will follow over the May 2 and 3.

Brewery news Ukraine & China: Obolon beer enters the Chinese market
Obolon Corporation, one of the largest producers of beer and soft drinks in Ukraine, is entering the Chinese market, Interfax-Ukraine reported on April 17.

Head of the supervisory board of public joint-stock company Obolon, Serhiy Bloschanevych, said at the National Export Forum that Ukrainian breweries are trying to compensate their loss of part of the domestic market.

He said that the most promising markets are the Asian, Latin American and African markets, while the EU market is saturated and competitive.

"The markets of Asia, Latin America and Africa are more interesting for us. For example, we started working with China," he said.

He told Interfax-Ukraine that the first small batches of beer have been already shipped to China.

Bloschanevych expressed indignation at the absence of a government reaction to the ban on Ukrainian beer imports by Russia's Rospotrebnadzor last year.

"We asked the Ukrainian prime minister, the Economic Development and Trade Ministry and Foreign Ministry several times to settle the issue with a ban on importing Russian beer in response to the ban of our exports to Russia. Some steps have been made, but this is not enough. We hope that the situation will be finally resolved," he said.

Referring to the State Statistics Service, he said ...More info on site

Brewery news Myanmar: Carlsberg starts selling locally brewed Tuborg and Yoma beers
Carlsberg has launched sales of its locally brewed Tuborg and Yoma brands in Myanmar as it seeks to become the first post-sanctions foreign producer to break into a growing beer sector dominated by state and military-backed enterprises, Reuters reported on April 22.

The firm began sales before Thingyan, providing domestic competition to market leader Myanmar Brewery.

Carlsberg Asia Region senior vice president Roy Bagattini said in a statement when the firm first announced it would come to Myanmar that the Danish company had closely followed developments in the country and was encouraged by recent political developments.

"We believe that the timing is right for us to invest," he said in January of 2013. "We expect that the Myanmar beer market will grow strongly in coming years as the economy expands."

Carlsberg established a local partnership with Myanmar Golden Star Breweries (MGS) in 2013, taking a 51 per cent stake in their joint venture Myanmar Carlsberg Co Ltd, and building a US$50 million brewery in Bago.

The brewery's sales began for Tuborg, an international brand, and Yoma, a brand created for the local market, in April. Tuborg's pricing is to be similar to Tiger, and the beer is available in kegs, cans and bottles, while ...More info on site

Brewery news Russia: Heineken to use idle brewing capacity for producing kvass beverage
Dutch brewer Heineken is to start production of the traditional Russian kvass brewed beverage in four factories across Russia. The company is using spare capacity as Russia’s beer market is shrinking, rt.com reported on April 23.

The Ostmark, Sheehan and Rusich brands will be produced in Heineken factories in Kaliningrad, Sterlitamak (the Republic of Bashkortostan), Khabarovsk and Irkutsk. All three are part of the company’s brand portfolio.

The decision to start producing kvass is aimed at using spare capacity due to a slump in the beer market, said company spokesman Cyril Bolmatov. Currently 40 percent of industry capacity remains underutilized. Companies don’t have to invest in reequipping bottling lines, as kvass production is similar to beer. Heineken intends to sell the kvass in nearby regions.

Heineken beer sales in Russia fell 10 percent in 2014, and if sales of kvass are successful, the company intends to market one of the brands nationwide. The beer market in Russia fell by 8.6 percent in 2014, according to Russia’s statistical service Rosstat.

Market decline began before the introduction of sanctions and the devaluation of the rouble. Between 2009 and 2014 excise duty on beer rose from 3 roubles to 18 roubles per litre, forcing a reduction in ...More info on site

Brewery news Fiji: Paradise Beverages’ beer sales volume decreases in 2014
Paradise Beverages (Fiji) Ltd's beer sales volume in Fiji for the past 12 months totals 2.1 million nine-litre cases, The Fiji Times Online reports on April 21.

Over the 18 month period ending December 31, 2013, the company sold 3.2 mln nine-litre cases of beer.

According to the company 2014 annual report, spirits and alcoholic ready-to-drink (ARTD) volumes showed solid growth, recording 0.3 million nine-litre cases in the present period, with 0.4 million nine-litre cases in the prior reporting period.

It said underlying sales revenue increases were driven by a slight volume growth of 1.3 per cent, intra brand volume shift and price increases.
