Brewery news World: Merger with AB InBev may not be very lucrative for Diageo - analysts
Last year remained a somewhat troubled year for the leading spirits manufacturer, Diageo, against headwinds in emerging markets. Recently, speculations regarding a potential acquisition surfaced, with private equity firm 3G Capital formulating a bid, against which the stock rallied close to 9% last week. Given that 3G has a major stake in the leading beer company, Anheuser-Busch InBev, the acquisition could imply a potential merger between the two companies. While the merger might hold promise for AB InBev, it may not be as lucrative for Diageo, Forbes reported on June 15.

Diageo’s business is predominantly based on spirits, with beer holding a 20% share. While AB InBev could use its expertise to expand Diageo’s beer business, they could have little to contribute to spirits. In this case, combining forces with AB InBev could result in various integration risks that could outweigh potential cost synergies.

In case of a merger, AB InBev’s biggest gift to Diageo would be their strong hold over beer in many developed markets such as the U.S. However, the U.S. has been increasingly seeing customers shifting from beer to spirits, with market share for spirits increasing from 34.7% to 35.2% between 2013 and 2014, and that for beer declining ...More info on site

Brewery news Hungary: Beer sales up by around 2% last year, expected to grow again in 2015
The amount of beer sold by Hungarian breweries increased by around 2 per cent last year and the tendency is expected to continue in 2015, according to the Association of Hungarian Beer Brewers.

A total of 6.2 million hectolitres of beer was produced in the total of four Hungarian factories owned by the association’s member companies, Borsodi Sörgyár Kft., Dreher Sörgyárak Zrt. and Heineken Hungária Zrt., in 2014. The breweries employ close to 1700 people and provide work to a further 25 000 through their subsidiaries, according to estimates. Breweries contributed HUF 66.2 billion to the country’s tax revenue in 2014.

Sales of premium-category beers increased by 23 per cent last year, and this tendency is expected to continue in the estimates of the federation, which has launched a series of events to introduce beer culture to the wider public and make quality beers more popular.

The favourable tendencies are partly due to the fact that Hungarian breweries have been devoting special importance to stable and reliable quality and producing beer that complies with quality labels, the association writes, highlighting that in its previous survey, the National Consumer Protection Authority found the taste and quality of all forty examined types of beer up ...More info on site

Brewery news World: Tsingtao beer increases market share in various parts of the world
In a short period of time, Tsingtao Brewery Co, one of China's largest brewers in terms of market share, has become one of the fastest-selling brands in the UK, Ecns.cn reported on June 17.

James Wright, a UK-based Tsingtao dealer, says that though the UK is considered to be a leading tipplers market and home to about 2,000 beer brands, there are just few that have managed to dominate the market.

"Tsingtao has actually been one of the stand-out brands. The Chinese brand accounts for about 42 percent of the UK's imported beer sales," he said.

Though beer sales in the UK have waned of late due to the exorbitant duties, sales of Tsingtao have managed to buck the trend and post double-digit growth rates.

More importantly, for Tsingtao, the success in the UK market is a reflection of its long-term efforts in developing overseas markets through innovation and sustained marketing campaigns.

Last year, Tsingtao's market share in Latin America and South Korea jumped by nearly 50 percent, while sales in West Europe and North America rose by about 20 percent.

Sun Mingbo, chairman of the Shandong province-based Tsingtao, said the pursuit for higher quality through innovation has been a major driver for overseas market expansion.

Brewery news New Zealand & Australia: New Zealand government asks for tax refunds for breweries exporting their production to Australia
New Zealand breweries exporting beer to Australia could get tens of thousands in tax refunds if the New Zealand Government has its way, stuff.co.nz reported on June 16.

The Government is calling on the Australian government to let New Zealand brewers who export across the Tasman in on a brewery refund scheme which gives Australian brewers up to A$30,000 (NZ$33,300) in tax refunds a year.

In response to an Australian tax discussion paper, the Government submitted a paper asking for an extension of the brewery refund scheme to New Zealand independent breweries in accordance with Closer Economic Relations (CER) obligations.

The extension would be similar to benefits New Zealand wine producers receive under the Wine Equalisation Tax (WET) rebate scheme.

Under the WET scheme more than 200 New Zealand wine companies have been claiming rebates of up to A$500,000 each a year.

WET was initially available to all Australian wineries but under the trans-Tasman CER the agreement was extended to New Zealand wineries.

The brewery refund scheme came into effect in Australia in July, 2012 replacing a microbrewery excise scheme.

To be eligible for the excise duty refund exporters must operate a brewery and both be legally and economically independent of any other entity that operates a ...More info on site

Brewery news India: Telangana government set to give permission for microbreweries
Beer connoisseurs in Hyderabad can soon look forward to their favourite tipple crafted just the way they want as the Telangana government is set to give permission for microbreweries, The New Indian Express reported on June 17.

Telangana is one of the largest beer producing states in India, with more than six breweries in the state. As many as 6,500 lakh cases of beer are sold every year, including 3 crore cases in Hyderabad alone. In fact, beer contributes a whopping 30 per cent of the revenue.

In spite of the increasing demand for beer in the state, the Telangana government is yet to introduce microbreweries, a concept which is a rage in Bangalore, Mumbai and Delhi. Officials of the Excise Department said that this could change soon.

“It (microbreweries) is under active consideration of the government and soon we will come out with a plan, once the policy is decided. The government is inclined favourably to introduce them here,” said RV Chandravadhan, commissioner, Telangana Prohibition and Excise department.

Considering that Telangana is one of the pioneers of beer production and consumption, it is strange that the state has not introduced microbreweries in Hyderabad, even as Bangalore, Mumbai and Pune have surged ahead.

In fact, ...More info on site

Barley news USA: Researchers collaborate to ramp up malting barley development for the Eastern North America
Researchers from John Innes Centre (JIC) and Michigan State University’s Upper Peninsula Research and Extension Center (UPREC) have collaborated to ramp up malting barley development for use in craft brewing, Drinks Business Review reported on June 16.

The collaboration comes as farmers and maltsters in the Eastern North America find it difficult to identify varieties that are well suited to a humid climate, although malting barley and malt industries are growing in the region.

Through the partnership, the researchers will develop genomic selection technique, an advanced DNA-based method to fuel the breeding process.

JIC scientists work on heritage barley lines to develop new malt flavours and Fusarium head blight resistance.

UPREC researchers have already put six UK varieties in the ground selected from a cross with Chevallier, a popular barley from the Victorian period, with resistance to Fusarium head blight.

The collaboration is backed by around Ł40,000 funds from the BBSRC.

John Innes Centre researcher Dr Sarah De Vos said: "Sharing knowledge in this way benefits researchers throughout the entire brewing and malting supply chain, and enables us to gain maximum impact from our work.

"It is important that the next generation of researchers develop commercial knowledge as part of their training."
