Brewery news USA, CA: Mumford Brewing Co. opens in downtown Los Angeles
Mumford Brewing Co. is now open in downtown L.A.’s arts district, Los Angeles Times reported on June 15.

Started by brothers Todd and Peter Mumford, the brewery opened after nearly two years of constructions and preparations in a former retail space on Boyd Street.

Todd Mumford was relieved to finally open the brewery’s doors after months of setbacks, permitting issues and the bureaucratic obstacles that are well known to many of the hopeful proprietors opening breweries in Los Angeles. The native of Southern California says he loves the feel of that arts district neighbourhood and that he always wanted to open Mumford Brewery in downtown Los Angeles.

It’s a neighbourhood that’s quickly becoming a new nexus of craft brewing in Los Angeles.

Brewery news USA, ME: Bigelow Brewing in Skowhegan looks to quadruple beer production
On June 9, the Skowhegan Board of Selectmen gave the town development office approval to file a letter of intent for a $180,000 grant application for Bigelow Brewing Co., Press Herald reported on June 14.

On June 11, the owners Pam and Jeff Powers took delivery of 96 full-sized utility poles to be used to build a new hop growing yard.

When the couple opened their brewery on Bigelow Hill Road, Skowhegan, in May 2014, there were about 47 microbreweries in Maine, company vice president Pam Powers said. Now there are 62 with 12 more set to open this year.

The plan is to quadruple the Bigelow Brewing operation, and Powers said it’s warranted.

“I don’t know any brewery that is struggling in Maine,” she said. “We have had an increase in sales every month. We are selling at capacity. We’re selling every bit of product we can make. We can’t make it fast enough. We’re turning down customers every week.”

If the federal Economic and Community Development grant is approved, the couple will need at least that much more to expand the brewery in the former horse-barn by 50 feet for a new 15-barrel brewhouse. They currently operate with three barrels.

Powers said by expanding ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, BC: The Forbidden Brewing Company to become the third craft brewery to open in Comox Valley
It's been a long haul for Michael Vincent and his four business partners, but they are now close to becoming the latest craft brewery to open in the Comox Valley, Comox Valley Echo reported on June 13.

The Forbidden Brewing Company is targeted to welcome its first customers in July.

The independent business venture follows in the footsteps of two other micro-breweries that have recently launched to acclaim in the Comox Valley - Cumberland and Gladstone Breweries.

Forbidden Brewing hadn't actually intended to follow anyone, but getting all the paperwork and licensing agreements in place has taken longer than originally expected, as has the conversion of premises that were never designed to be a brewery.

When it finally launches, it will be what chief executive Michael Vincent calls a 'nano' rather than 'micro' brewery.

"We'll start small and build up," he told the Echo. "We'll begin by brewing 900-litre batches, starting with a Pale Ale and an India Pale Ale."

The project began nearly 12 months ago, but most of the major work is now complete, including building a walk-in cooler, creating washrooms, and installing the majority of the all-important brewing equipment.

Brewery news USA, IA: Worth Brewing Co. to expand in Northwood
Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad, congratulated Northwood’s Worth Brewing Co., as its owners on June 12 announced plans for a major expansion across the street from their present location on Central Avenue, Northwood, Albert Lea Tribune reported on June 14.

The expansion, which is slated for completion in early 2016, will increase brewery space by about five times and production capacity by about thirty times.

“This is a growing entrepreneurial business and an opportunity to meet the needs of Iowa,” Branstad said.

Worth Brewing Co., which opened its doors in 2007 on Northwood’s Central Avenue, Northwood, is the smallest commercial brewery in Iowa. The business was founded by the husband-and-wife-team of Peter Ausenhus and Margaret Bishop.

Ausenhus said when they opened in 2007 there were only about seven to 10 breweries in the state. Now there are about 55.

Ausenhus, an award-winning brewer and national beer judge, started the brewery in a former bank building with equipment capable of producing only a fraction of the annual volume that most breweries could produce.

He said they have brewed 2,000 batches since they opened.

As part of the expansion, Ausenhus plans to increase distribution of Worth Brewing Co. Plans may also include expansion into bottling for retail sales.

Brewery news USA, CO: Skeye Brewing Co. to open its doors in Longmont on June 19
Longmont's eighth brewery, Skeye Brewing, is opening this week, and city officials believe the city can support even more, Longmont Times-Call reported on June 15.

Skeye Brewing will open its doors and taps at 900 S. Hover St., Longmont, on June 19.

"We chose Longmont because Longmont needs more breweries," said Kami Malanowski, a Marine Corps veteran who is co-owner and head brewer for the brew house. "We've worked hard to make sessionable, flavourful, well-balanced beers, and we want to share them with the craft beer drinkers in the city that we call home."

Longmont now has eight breweries.

"Oh we could have more," Kami Malanowski said. "It's a real brotherhood-sisterhood. We help each other out a lot. The more we have, the more people are going to come here. And that helps all of us out."

"Even the bigger breweries are helping out the small ones," Allen added.

City officials agree that Longmont is far from reaching saturation point.

"I'm not concerned about market saturation with breweries because so many of our local firms are already exporting product - or planning to - outside of Longmont," added Longmont's assistant city manager Shawn Lewis, who works on economic development issues for the city. "This is not ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, ON: Split Rail Brewing sets its opening for July
Split Rail Brewing has announced plans to officially open to the public next month in Gore Bay, a small town on Ontario’s Manitoulin Island in Lake Huron, Canadian Beer News reported on June 16.

Split Rail Brewing’s founders are Andrea Smith and Eleanor Charlton. Glenn Fobes is the brewery’s brewmaster.

The public grand opening for the brewery at 31 Water St. in Gore Bay will take place on July 24.

Brewery news USA, VA: Startup brewery to open in Newport News by the end of the year
Tradition Brewing Co., a local startup, wants to bring a craft brewery to Newport News, Daily Press reported on June 12.

"This isn't just our brewery," head brewer Dan Powell said. "It's really the community's. We want everyone to be a part of it."

Tradition Brewing Co. aims to open a 20-barrel brew house in the centrally located Oyster Point district, Newport News, but is still negotiating multiple lease options, said business operations and construction partner Gray Bowditch.

The brewing company would like to start production by late fall with on-site sales in the tasting room starting by the end of the year, Powell said.

"It's always been in the back of my mind," said Powell, who has been home-brewing for 22 years and has worked with other breweries on research and development. "I finally woke up one morning and said, 'we're opening a brewery.'"

The name Tradition Brewing came to Powell when he looked around and saw symbols of everything he loved: his life's traditions. While invoking pride in local heritage, Bowditch said the name lends itself to creating new traditions, too.

"We're building a tradition personally around our product and experience," Bowditch said.

Brewery news USA, KY: Old Louisville Brewing Company to open in Louisville in October
A brewery called the Old Louisville Brewing Company is planned at the site of a former grocery store along West Magnolia Avenue in Louisville, Louisville Business First reported on June 15.

“This is a no-brainer to have a community tavern right here in the heart of Old Louisville,” said Wade Mattingly, who's transforming the space.

Mattingly plans to keep as much of the original store as he can.

When patrons enter the brewery, they'll be able to see the beer being made in the back of the building, the story said.

Mattingly hopes to open the Old Louisville Brewing Company in October.

Wade and James Mattingly were awarded a $22,703 loan in April from the Louisville Metropolitan Business Development Corp., known as METCO, to renovate the building at 625 W. Magnolia Ave., Louisville.

Barley news USA: Researchers collaborate to ramp up malting barley development for the Eastern North America
Researchers from John Innes Centre (JIC) and Michigan State University’s Upper Peninsula Research and Extension Center (UPREC) have collaborated to ramp up malting barley development for use in craft brewing, Drinks Business Review reported on June 16.

The collaboration comes as farmers and maltsters in the Eastern North America find it difficult to identify varieties that are well suited to a humid climate, although malting barley and malt industries are growing in the region.

Through the partnership, the researchers will develop genomic selection technique, an advanced DNA-based method to fuel the breeding process.

JIC scientists work on heritage barley lines to develop new malt flavours and Fusarium head blight resistance.

UPREC researchers have already put six UK varieties in the ground selected from a cross with Chevallier, a popular barley from the Victorian period, with resistance to Fusarium head blight.

The collaboration is backed by around £40,000 funds from the BBSRC.

John Innes Centre researcher Dr Sarah De Vos said: "Sharing knowledge in this way benefits researchers throughout the entire brewing and malting supply chain, and enables us to gain maximum impact from our work.

"It is important that the next generation of researchers develop commercial knowledge as part of their training."

Brewery news World: Merger with AB InBev may not be very lucrative for Diageo - analysts
Last year remained a somewhat troubled year for the leading spirits manufacturer, Diageo, against headwinds in emerging markets. Recently, speculations regarding a potential acquisition surfaced, with private equity firm 3G Capital formulating a bid, against which the stock rallied close to 9% last week. Given that 3G has a major stake in the leading beer company, Anheuser-Busch InBev, the acquisition could imply a potential merger between the two companies. While the merger might hold promise for AB InBev, it may not be as lucrative for Diageo, Forbes reported on June 15.

Diageo’s business is predominantly based on spirits, with beer holding a 20% share. While AB InBev could use its expertise to expand Diageo’s beer business, they could have little to contribute to spirits. In this case, combining forces with AB InBev could result in various integration risks that could outweigh potential cost synergies.

In case of a merger, AB InBev’s biggest gift to Diageo would be their strong hold over beer in many developed markets such as the U.S. However, the U.S. has been increasingly seeing customers shifting from beer to spirits, with market share for spirits increasing from 34.7% to 35.2% between 2013 and 2014, and that for beer declining ...More info on site

Brewery news Hungary: Beer sales up by around 2% last year, expected to grow again in 2015
The amount of beer sold by Hungarian breweries increased by around 2 per cent last year and the tendency is expected to continue in 2015, according to the Association of Hungarian Beer Brewers.

A total of 6.2 million hectolitres of beer was produced in the total of four Hungarian factories owned by the association’s member companies, Borsodi Sörgyár Kft., Dreher Sörgyárak Zrt. and Heineken Hungária Zrt., in 2014. The breweries employ close to 1700 people and provide work to a further 25 000 through their subsidiaries, according to estimates. Breweries contributed HUF 66.2 billion to the country’s tax revenue in 2014.

Sales of premium-category beers increased by 23 per cent last year, and this tendency is expected to continue in the estimates of the federation, which has launched a series of events to introduce beer culture to the wider public and make quality beers more popular.

The favourable tendencies are partly due to the fact that Hungarian breweries have been devoting special importance to stable and reliable quality and producing beer that complies with quality labels, the association writes, highlighting that in its previous survey, the National Consumer Protection Authority found the taste and quality of all forty examined types of beer up ...More info on site

Brewery news World: Tsingtao beer increases market share in various parts of the world
In a short period of time, Tsingtao Brewery Co, one of China's largest brewers in terms of market share, has become one of the fastest-selling brands in the UK, Ecns.cn reported on June 17.

James Wright, a UK-based Tsingtao dealer, says that though the UK is considered to be a leading tipplers market and home to about 2,000 beer brands, there are just few that have managed to dominate the market.

"Tsingtao has actually been one of the stand-out brands. The Chinese brand accounts for about 42 percent of the UK's imported beer sales," he said.

Though beer sales in the UK have waned of late due to the exorbitant duties, sales of Tsingtao have managed to buck the trend and post double-digit growth rates.

More importantly, for Tsingtao, the success in the UK market is a reflection of its long-term efforts in developing overseas markets through innovation and sustained marketing campaigns.

Last year, Tsingtao's market share in Latin America and South Korea jumped by nearly 50 percent, while sales in West Europe and North America rose by about 20 percent.

Sun Mingbo, chairman of the Shandong province-based Tsingtao, said the pursuit for higher quality through innovation has been a major driver for overseas market expansion.

Brewery news New Zealand & Australia: New Zealand government asks for tax refunds for breweries exporting their production to Australia
New Zealand breweries exporting beer to Australia could get tens of thousands in tax refunds if the New Zealand Government has its way, stuff.co.nz reported on June 16.

The Government is calling on the Australian government to let New Zealand brewers who export across the Tasman in on a brewery refund scheme which gives Australian brewers up to A$30,000 (NZ$33,300) in tax refunds a year.

In response to an Australian tax discussion paper, the Government submitted a paper asking for an extension of the brewery refund scheme to New Zealand independent breweries in accordance with Closer Economic Relations (CER) obligations.

The extension would be similar to benefits New Zealand wine producers receive under the Wine Equalisation Tax (WET) rebate scheme.

Under the WET scheme more than 200 New Zealand wine companies have been claiming rebates of up to A$500,000 each a year.

WET was initially available to all Australian wineries but under the trans-Tasman CER the agreement was extended to New Zealand wineries.

The brewery refund scheme came into effect in Australia in July, 2012 replacing a microbrewery excise scheme.

To be eligible for the excise duty refund exporters must operate a brewery and both be legally and economically independent of any other entity that operates a ...More info on site

Brewery news India: Telangana government set to give permission for microbreweries
Beer connoisseurs in Hyderabad can soon look forward to their favourite tipple crafted just the way they want as the Telangana government is set to give permission for microbreweries, The New Indian Express reported on June 17.

Telangana is one of the largest beer producing states in India, with more than six breweries in the state. As many as 6,500 lakh cases of beer are sold every year, including 3 crore cases in Hyderabad alone. In fact, beer contributes a whopping 30 per cent of the revenue.

In spite of the increasing demand for beer in the state, the Telangana government is yet to introduce microbreweries, a concept which is a rage in Bangalore, Mumbai and Delhi. Officials of the Excise Department said that this could change soon.

“It (microbreweries) is under active consideration of the government and soon we will come out with a plan, once the policy is decided. The government is inclined favourably to introduce them here,” said RV Chandravadhan, commissioner, Telangana Prohibition and Excise department.

Considering that Telangana is one of the pioneers of beer production and consumption, it is strange that the state has not introduced microbreweries in Hyderabad, even as Bangalore, Mumbai and Pune have surged ahead.

In fact, ...More info on site
