Brewery news UK: Carlsberg launches zero-alcohol Carlsberg
Carlsberg UK has announced the launch of Carlsberg’s new 0.0% ABV lager which is being introduced in bottles in the on-trade, Bar Magazine reported on June 22.

The beer is designed to retain the taste of the brand’s traditional lager, made with the natural ingredients of hops, malt and water, but is completely free of alcohol.

Available in 275ml bottles, it follows Carlsberg UK’s launch in the UK of other alcohol-free lagers San Miguel 0.0% and San Miguel 0.0% Limon.

It comes during a boom in the alcohol-free beer category which is now worth £41million in the UK, according to research group Nielsen. Carlsberg UK believes it offers a “huge opportunity” for licensees to capitalise on, particularly in the run-up to the summer when beer sales spike.

David Scott, director of brands and insight at Carlsberg UK, said: “Insight shows us that drinkers are increasingly looking to find alternatives for when alcohol may not be a suitable option but still want the satisfaction of a great-tasting beer, and we’re confident that Carlsberg 0.0% delivers on these key factors.

“In addition to this, expansion of our lower- and no-alcohol portfolio reflects our commitment to working with government to help create a responsible drinking environment by providing ...More info on site

Brewery news Japan: Sapporo Breweries files protest over authorities’ refusal to give it tax refund
Japan’s Sapporo Breweries Ltd. filed a protest over national tax authorities’ earlier decision to refuse the brewery’s request for a tax refund, The Japan Times reported on June 23.

The beer maker lodged the protest with regional tax authorities in four prefectures and Hokkaido.

The authorities rejected in April refunding ¥11.5 billion ($93.7 million) that Sapporo claimed to have overpaid over revamping its beer-like drink Goku Zero last year, although they did not reveal the reason for the decision.

Japan’s fourth-biggest brewery had voluntarily paid the money in additional liquor tax after the authorities requested last June data on the production of Goku Zero, which was then classified as a third-category beer, a drink taxed at lower rates than regular beers.

Sapporo relaunched the product as “happoshu” low-malt beer, which carries a higher tax rate than third-category beer. The ¥11.5 billion represents the difference between the two categories.

But the company later verified the product as third-category beer on its own and requested the refund in January. Sapporo continued to sell it as a third-category product for about a year.

Brewery news Thailand: Thai Asia Pacific Breweries against imposing ban on alcohol sale within 300 m of university and college campuses
Thai Asia Pacific Breweries (TAP), the brewer of Heineken, Tiger and Cheers beers, lashed out at the proposal to impose the ban on alcohol sale within 300 metres of university and college campuses, Thai Visa News reported on June 23.

“TAP believes that this proposal is both ill-conceived and unnecessary,” it said in a statement.

It said that the proposal was ill-conceived because it assumes that underage drinking can be addressed by moving the point of sale when underage individuals will simply find another place to purchase alcohol.

It added that the new law was unnecessary because there are already appropriate laws in place that prohibit the sale of alcoholic beverages to individuals under the age of 20.

“It is not a question of needing new laws, but rather enforcing the laws that are already in place,” it said.

It continued that the move will negatively impact consumers who have the right to purchase alcohol, merchants who have the right to sell alcohol, and the government who will have to task valuable resources enforcing an unnecessary law.

It added that the authorities should strictly enforce existing laws at retail outlets and entertainment venues that violate the law. It also urged the authorities to consider increasing the ...More info on site
