Brewery news USA: MillerCoors LLC makes changes to sell more beer
MillerCoors LLC has replaced its chief marketing officer and chief of sales in an attempt to sell more Miller Lite, Redd’s Apple Ale and its other brands after five years of decline reduced its annual sales by seven million barrels, Milwaukee Business Journal reported on July 2.

The record profits and net revenue since SABMiller PLC and Molson Coors Brewing Co. formed the joint venture in 2009 were not enough for Gavin Hattersley, the interim CEO who moved from Molson Coors Brewing Co. in May.

“Those financial returns are certainly one indicator of success, but in today’s world, we can’t get by on financial returns alone,” Hattesley said in a release. “We must optimize our brand portfolio and take action to get Molson Coors Brewing Co. back to total volume growth.”

The action will be led by David Kroll, who moves up to replace Andy England as chief marketing officer, responsible for shaping the sales pitch for Miller High Life, Coors Light and Leinenkugel’s Summer Shandy. England was the joint venture's first marketing officer, hired seven years ago.

Kroll previously served as the Molson Coors Brewing Co.’s vice president of innovation and led the commercial operations for Dyson Ltd. before joining the brewing company.

Brewery news USA, MI: Big Lake Brewing to triple production and increase distribution in Holland
Big Lake Brewing, a locally-owned microbrewery in Holland, will celebrate its two-year anniversary this week with equipment upgrades, tripling production and a new focus on the business, Holland Sentinel reported on July 1.

"Our expectations are constantly shifting as we go along — two years ago there's no way I would have put us at this point," said Nic Winsemius, brewer and owner of Big Lake Brewing.

The 3,000-square-foot brewery and taproom opened in the Family Fare shopping center in Holland on July 5, 2013.

Early success allowed reinvestment in the business after one month. Owners and brewers Nic Winsemius and Travis Prueter, and owner in charge of wine and cider Greg MacKeller remain committed to reinvestment and growing the business.

"It's a really exciting time," Winsemius said. "Our focus on quality has led us to invest in some laboratory equipment to better ensure consistency, and we will also take delivery of a new seven-barrel brewing system later this month."

The equipment will allow an output of 1,000 barrels a year, or about 19-20 a week. In September 2013, the output was about three barrels a week.

"We've consistently sold all of the product we can make, and this is the fourth time we've ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NJ: Cypress Brewing Co. opened its doors in Edison on July 1
On July 1, what started as a hobby for Bill Lutz, Jason Kijowski and Charles Backmann became a reality when Cypress Brewing Co. opened its doors to the public, MyCentralJersey reported on the same day.

Owners Bill Lutz, Jason Kijowski and Charles Backmann’s journey, however, began years ago when they gave samples of their kitchen brew to Charles Backmann Sr. and Ken Kijowski. The two fathers thought their son’s beer turned out so well that it could render a profitable business. Thus, Bill Jason and Charles Backmann conceived the idea of Cypress Brewing Co., and the real work began for the three men.

Lutz, Kijowski and Backmann knew they could not continue from their residential location. Cypress Brewing moved out of Kijowski’s kitchen into a larger facility on 30 Nixon Lane, Edison. By doing so, the owners brought a new industry to the township. In fact, Cypress Brewing stands as Edison’s first brewery, and as a result, the Edison Chamber of Commerce recently awarded owner, Charles Backmann, Entrepreneur of the Year for bringing a new idea to the local marketplace.

With a location secured and recipes underway, the owners still needed to build Cypress Brewing Co. and that’s when it truly became a ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NM: Marble Brewery launches $1.5 million production expansion
One of the country’s most decorated small breweries is about to get bigger, Albuquerque Journal reported on July 1.

Albuquerque’s Marble Brewery on July 1 broke ground on a $1.5 million expansion project at its location in Albuquerque that will more than double its beer-making capacity. Owners say the extra 7,000 square feet of space will help Marble Brewery meet growing demand for a product that it can no longer make fast enough.

“Before we even think about making a drop of beer, everything is sold — which is a beautiful place to be, but it’s a challenging place to be,” said Ted Rice, Marble Brewery’s president and one of its owners. “My sales manager (jokes) he wasn’t actually a ‘sales manager,’ he was a ‘shortage specialist.'”

Marble Brewery — which has been stuck brewing between 12,500 and 13,000 barrels of beer annually for the last few years due to space constraints — will be able to produce about 30,000 barrels with the addition of the new space and equipment.

“It’s been a long time in the making (and) we’re pretty fired up,” Rice told a small crowd that gathered at Marble Brewery for the ceremony on July 1.

More than 95 percent of Marble ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CA: Firestone Walker Brewing Co. to build a new warehouse in Paso Robles
Firestone Walker Brewing Co. will be building a new warehouse in a roughly $6 million expansion of its Paso Robles location on the south end of town, The San Luis Obispo Tribune reported on July 1.

The project, at 1400 Ramada Drive, Paso Robles, was green-lighted by the Paso Robles Planning Commission and does not need to go to the City Council for approval.

The expansion, which business co-founder Adam Firestone says will likely begin later this year, will add 9,000 square feet of office and warehouse space to an existing 19,500-square-foot building, a new 55,000-square-foot warehouse and 39 more parking spaces.

The projects will be constructed just north of the existing brewery.

The company hasn’t gone out to bid on the project yet, but Firestone Walker Brewing estimates the entire project will cost about $6 million.

The new 55,000-square-foot warehouse would be constructed on an undeveloped 3-acre site, just north of the brewery.

“(This) just moves some stuff indoors that (currently) sits outdoors. And otherwise adds more parking for us,” Firestone said.

The empty parcel is also a staging area for construction equipment, which will be removed from the brewery campus when the new warehouse is built, according to plans submitted to the city.

Brewery news Canada, ON: Craft beer consumption increases in Ontario
When Ontario drinkers raise a glass, more and more of them are choosing wine and craft beer. That's according to the Liquor Control Board of Ontario's most recent annual report, which encompasses the detailed data from 2013-14, Toronto Star reported on July 2.

The statistics show that craft beer sales are up 26.6 per cent.

While overall beer sales in Ontario declined — mostly at the privately owned Beer Store chain — domestic beer was up 3.3 per cent at the Liquor Control Board of Ontario (LCBO) (propelled by popular craft brews) with a 2.9 per cent increase in imports such as Heineken from the Netherlands and Corona from Mexico.

Cider sales skyrocketed 52.7 per cent with the Somersby brand growing 263 per cent over the previous year.

The LCBO buys products from 86 countries around the world.

Brewery news USA, MI: Third Monk Brewing Company opened in South Lyon on June 26
There wasn't a lot of fanfare before Third Monk Brewing Company opened on June 26, Hometownlife.com reported on July 2.

But word has gotten out and the place has been hopping ever since.

"The response was far beyond expectations," said Jim Robinson, Third Monk Brewing’s co-owner with Darlene Dunlop. "We've got a lot of locals who have been watching the activity and wondering when we would open. So we turned on the sign and we had a lot of people come in. We were comfortably busy."

The "idea" for the quiet opening, Robinson said, "was to engage response."

South Lyon is quickly becoming the place to go for craft beer lovers.

There's Scrooge & Barley, a home craft brew supply business, and now Third Monk Brewing at 228 S. Lafayette, South Lyon.

Robinson wasn't surprised that the Third Monk Brewing opening lured in so many people without publicity. The atmosphere in Third Monk Brewing is quaint.

"Craft beer is raging across the United States," he said. "This is a national phenomenon."

In fact, he said, there is more craft beer sold in the U.S. than the Budweiser brand sells.

"Before the opening we were brewing in advance so we'd have several beers to put on tap," Robinson said. "Initially ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, FL: Four Stacks Brewing to open in Apollo Beach in August
Apollo Beach will get its first craft brewery and taproom sometime in August when Four Stacks Brewing Company, which has been in the works for a year under the name Monument Brewing Co., opens its headquarters at 5469 N. U.S. Highway 41, Creative Loafing Tampa reported on July 2.

Instead of fighting to maintain its identity as Monument Brewing — there’s a similarly named spot operating in Maryland as Monument City Brewing Company — brewmaster Nathan Hangen says he and co-owner Shawn Christenson wanted to put money into their beer instead of legal fees.

“The new name speaks to the brewery’s roots, and it’s something people can identify with,“ Hangen says. When motorists make their way down Interstate 75 near Apollo Beach, they see the four tall smokestacks of TECO Energy’s Big Bend Power Station, which manatees started flocking to in 1986.

“We haven’t done the full name change yet, but people love it,” Hangen says.

Two years ago, Hangen and Christenson, beer enthusiasts who have been running a software company together for four years or so, got serious about launching Four Stacks Brewing during one of their regular trips to San Diego. Hangen, a Ruskin resident, says the duo wanted to open ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, AB: Troubled Monk Brewery opened in Red Deer on June 13
Alberta’s newest craft brewery, Troubled Monk Brewery, opened its doors earlier this month in Red Deer, Canadian Beer News reported on June 30.

Brewery news Canada, AB: Hog’s Head Brewing allegedly has shut down
Hog’s Head Brewing – a St. Albert-based brewery that also brews the Amber’s and Roughneck beer brands – appears to have suspended operations, Canadian Beer News reported on June 30.

No official announcement has been made

In addition to people’s talk, there are a few key facts that lead to this conclusion. The brewing staff appears to have all been let go. The head brewer is working elsewhere and no one can tell if a new brewer has been hired. Recently, the Hog Head Brewing’s brewhouse was on sale at probrewer.com, as was a bunch of other equipment and supplies, including kegs and their famous beer trailer. The website has become an unrecognizable mess.

On top of this, Hog’s Head Brewing’s Twitter and Instagram accounts have been shut down, and its Facebook page has been taken over by a disgruntled investor that posted about the brewery’s financial difficulties several times in April.

It’s unknown at this time if the Hog Head Brewing’s brand or brewery will be revived.

Brewery news Canada, ON: Split Rail Brewing to open in Gore Bay on July 24
Split Rail Brewing has announced plans to officially open to the public in Gore Bay in July, Canadian Beer News reported on June 16.

Split Rail Brewing’s founders are Andrea Smith and Eleanor Charlton.

The public grand opening for the brewery and tasting room at 31 Water St. in Gore Bay will take place on July 24.

Brewery news Canada, NU: Nunavut Brewing Company being proposed in Iqaluit
A group of investors met with Iqaluit city council to present a plan to open the city’s – and territory’s – first brewery, Nunavut Brewing Company, Canadian Beer News reported on June 26.

Nunavut Brewing Company has five partners on board, with an aim to raise C$3 million to build and establish the brewery.

The initial proposal was well-received, and a more detailed plan will be reviewed and discussed by Iqaluit city council in July. If approved by the council, the proposal will then need to go to the Nunavut Liquor Licensing Board for further consultations, meaning it will be quite some time before the brewery will be launched.

Brewery news Canada, PE: Upstreet Craft Brewing opened in Charlottetown on June 26
Prince Edward Island-based, Upstreet Craft Brewing, is now open in Charlottetown, Canadian Beer News reported on June 29.

Upstreet Craft Brewing officially opened to the public on June 26.

Barley news USA: High-yielding barley variety developed in Europe may fill critical need for the growing US craft beer industry
Limagrain Cereal Seeds officials say a high-yielding irrigated barley variety developed in Europe has performed well in Pacific Northwest trials and should fill a critical need for the growing U.S. craft brewing industry, Capital Press reported on July 2.

Bred by Limagrain U.K., Genie has the attributes craft brewers desire but have trouble finding, given that most U.S. malts were developed for the American lagers that dominate the market.

Mass-produced American lagers typically use sugar from secondary sources, such as corn or rice, called adjunct brewing, requiring different malt specifications.

Limagrain Chief Operating Officer Frank Curtis said a few hundred acres of Genie are being raised in Idaho and Washington, both for seed and commercial malting, and 120 acres were planted in Colorado. Curtis said a small malting company in Fort Collins, Colo., has contracted for some Genie, and Great Western Malting Co. has also been evaluating Genie.

“We are hoping to go to several thousand acres of malt production next year,” Curtis said.

Most large, U.S. brewing companies require malt high in free amino nitrogen, providing the energy to ferment supplemental corn or rice sugars.

In all-grain craft brewing, however, residual FAN contributes to undesirable flavors. In addition to having lower FAN, Genie has high ...More info on site

Brewery news Zambia: SABMiller’s National Breweries to expand in coming months
National Breweries Plc is set to expand in coming months after the commission last year of its new state-of-the-art production plant in Lusaka, Zambia. The company is notable for producing Chikubu, a popular traditional beer, African Business Review reported on July 1.

The company has recently increased operational and capital focus on improving efficiencies and product quality, as well as capability enhancements. This has been achieved through the construction of a K200 million state-of-the-art brewery and packaging line in Lusaka.

Managing Director Annabelle Degroot noted the success of these improvements, but also emphasised that challenges remain for the brewer. She said: “The big competition is from formal companies who are well established breweries and who are delivering bulk opaque beer very blatantly in front of the authorities. We are engaging local councils on the issue and we are looking at what other avenues are available to take action and encourage the authorities to enforce the regulations.”

She also noted that consumers are facing a decline in disposable income due to unfavourable economic conditions, and as a result were turning to cheaper illicit bulk offerings.

National Breweries plc, alongside sister companies Zambian Breweries Plc and Heinrich’s Syndicate, is part of the SABMiller Group, one ...More info on site

Brewery news Australia: Carlton & United Breweries announce extension of its Fat Yak craft-style brand
SABMiller’s Australian unit Carlton & United Breweries (CUB) has announced the first extension of its successful Fat Yak brand and in doing so has flagged a major shift in its strategy around craft beer, Australian Brews News reported on July 3.

Lazy Yak is an Australian Pale Ale weighing in at 4.2 per cent alcohol by volume and made with Nelson Sauvin, Citra and Cascade hops. It will be an all-malt beer and carry 15 IBUs, around the same level of bitterness as most mainstream lagers on the market and 10 IBUs shy of its brand mate, Fat Yak.

Fat Yak was launched under the Matilda Bay brand in 2008 and has been a runaway success for CUB. Despite a variety of attempts to create further brands with similarly quirky appeal through Matilda Bay, CUB has struggled to recapture the same lightning in a bottle. Fat Yak has proven to be such a strong brand for Matilda Bay it has come to dramatically overshadow its parent.

National campaigns aimed at reflecting some of the gloss off Fat Yak back onto Matilda Bay have largely failed, leading to the current move to create a stand-alone brand franchise on the successful Yak name.

The focus on ...More info on site
