More about the hard resins

ABSTRACT
We learned last month that the composition of the hard resins might contain a good portion of prenylated hop flavonoids. This article now explains how to brew with it. The authors found that both varietal dependencies and hopping regimes to have an influence. Should we ever run into another shortage on alpha, we will have the hard resins to count on.

Brewery news USA: The 11 brewers that make the majority of the US beer
The story of beer in the U.S. in 2015 is basically whatever narrative you choose to believe, MarketWatch reported on July 28.

The Brewers Association craft beer industry group tells us there are more than 3,400 breweries in the U.S., the most since 1873, and that choice abounds. However, about 1,400 of those are brewpubs that aren’t putting beers on bar taps or store shelves. Also, the 1,900 or so microbreweries that exist are competing in a U.S. beer market in which exactly nine companies controlled 90% of all beer sold in 2014, according to Beer Marketer’s Insights.

Craft beer’s share of the market rose 17.6% last year, accounting for 11% of beer volume and $19.6 billion of the beer industry’s $101.5 billion in sales. However, it’s also a market in which the sale of imported beers rose 6.9% in 2014 and where, according to Nielsen, the amount of Mexican beer alone sold in grocery stores within the last year is equal to the amount of all craft beer sold from supermarket and convenience store beer shelves. It’s also a market where, despite advances by both craft and imported beers, one of every five beers sold is a Bud Light. In fact, ...More info on site

Brewery news Russia & Ukraine: Ukraine’s Obolon brewery to renew sales in Russia
Ukraine’s largest homegrown brewery Obolon has plans to renew sales in Russia, which accounted for up to 45 percent of its exports before sanctions were imposed in September banning the company’s suds, Kyiv Post reported on July 28.

The Kyiv-based beer company signed a licensing agreement with the Moscow Brewing Company in the beginning of summer to make beer inside Russia under its label, Obolon spokeswoman Oksana Pyrozhok said.

MBC is a direct competitor of Obolon in Ukraine through Persha Pryvatna Brovarnya (First Private Brewery), which occupied 4.2 percent of the local market last year, according to brand design company Koloro. It brews the Bochkove and Stare Misto brand beers as well as Zhyhuli Barne and Oettinger at the Radomshyl brewery which it bought in late 2011 via OasisCIS.

Obolon lost the Russian market in September when Rospotrebnadzor, the state-run consumer rights watchdog, said the beer didn’t “comply with energy value requirements and organoleptic characteristics.”

Obolon last year held 21.9 percent of Ukraine’s beer market, behind multi-national companies AB InBev and Carlsberg Ukraine, who had 34.7 and 29.1 percent, respectively.
