More about the hard resins

ABSTRACT
We learned last month that the composition of the hard resins might contain a good portion of prenylated hop flavonoids. This article now explains how to brew with it. The authors found that both varietal dependencies and hopping regimes to have an influence. Should we ever run into another shortage on alpha, we will have the hard resins to count on.

Brewery news USA: The 11 brewers that make the majority of the US beer
The story of beer in the U.S. in 2015 is basically whatever narrative you choose to believe, MarketWatch reported on July 28.

The Brewers Association craft beer industry group tells us there are more than 3,400 breweries in the U.S., the most since 1873, and that choice abounds. However, about 1,400 of those are brewpubs that aren’t putting beers on bar taps or store shelves. Also, the 1,900 or so microbreweries that exist are competing in a U.S. beer market in which exactly nine companies controlled 90% of all beer sold in 2014, according to Beer Marketer’s Insights.

Craft beer’s share of the market rose 17.6% last year, accounting for 11% of beer volume and $19.6 billion of the beer industry’s $101.5 billion in sales. However, it’s also a market in which the sale of imported beers rose 6.9% in 2014 and where, according to Nielsen, the amount of Mexican beer alone sold in grocery stores within the last year is equal to the amount of all craft beer sold from supermarket and convenience store beer shelves. It’s also a market where, despite advances by both craft and imported beers, one of every five beers sold is a Bud Light. In fact, ...More info on site

Hops news USA, NC: North Carolina’s brewery boom fuels an increase in hop production
This week marks the grand opening of another local Triangle brewery – BlackJack Brewing in Raleigh, NC, WRAL.com reported on July 25.

According to Brooks Hamaker of BlackJack Brewing, the secret to brewing a good beer is knowing what you’re doing and having quality ingredients.

“Hops are very, very important, and depending on the kind of beer you’re making, they can be more important,” Hamaker said. “Hops are one of the major ingredients for beers; they’re part of bittering the beer.”

Dan Gridley of Farm Boy Farms is now in his sixth year growing hops.

“We can’t grow enough,” Gridley said. “No one can grow enough.”

Gridley said much of the growing process is still experimental. North Carolina hop growers are still working to figure out what grows well in the area.

Until recently, brewers turned to the Pacific Northwest for hops.

“Hops grown in North Carolina are going to taste a little different just based on the soil and growing condition,” Gridley said. “The aromatic characteristics are going to be comparable.”

The hops are usually harvested in late July, but this year Gridley calling it an anomaly.

“This has been a bad year,” Gridley said “We had a very wet, cloudy gray May and a scorcher of a ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, IL: Chicago's Atlas Brewing expands operations by launching second facility in Chicago
Atlas Brewing Co., the Lincoln Avenue-based brewpub, just launched a line of cans that is making its way to liquor stores around Chicago, DNAinfo reported on July 27.

The young brewing company fired up its operations at a new South Side facility located inside the former Jay's Potato Chip factory at 99th and Cottage Grove.

Atlas Brewing's beers had primarily only been available on tap at its Lincoln Park location, 2747 N. Lincoln Ave. in Chicago, until earlier this month.

"It's exciting. It's scary. It's an opportunity to really turn this thing into something that can be a long-term career," said Ben Saller, who runs the brewery and brewpub with his brother John.

Ben Saller, a co-founder of the company, works on a batch at the new Atlas Brewing plant.

Atlas Brewing began looking for a location to expand their operation into a full-scale brewery about a year and a half ago and settled into the old Jay's factory about a month-and-a-half ago.

The Jay's factory shut down in 2007 and had been vacant up until Atlas Brewing moved in.

The young brewery's first cans were shipped out about three weeks ago and can be found in about 30 liquor stores.

"Right now it's definitely a bit ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MN: Bryn Mawr Brewing Company to open in Bryn Mawr’s neighbourhood in Minneapolis
Bryn Mawr Brewing Company has signed a lease to turn the abandoned Glenwood Inglewood water bottling plant into a craft brewery, KARE reported on July 28.

"It looks like potential," said Dan Justesen as he entered his empty future brewery.

Brewing equipment is already on order, with plans for a winter 2016 opening.

The Bryn Mawr Brewery will join roughly 100 of Minnesota’s craft breweries already open.

Justesen - who recently sold his interest in another brewery - insists there's room for another.

"What we're going to do is open a little bit larger than most that start out. We're going to actually create a 50 barrel brew house, which will make it probably the sixth largest brewhouse in the state," said Justesen.

The brewery plans to use the same natural springs that used to supply the water plant, with the focus on traditional beer varieties.

Justesen believes he's found an ideal location - at the edge of Wirth Park, within view of downtown and with a beer garden at the banks of Bassett Creek.

Justesen is hopeful a recent change in the elevator's ownership means development could be on the horizon for Fruen Mill too.

"I see Glenwood and the whole area coming out of downtown turning over," ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MI: Dutch Girl Brewery opens in Spring Lake on July 18
More than a year after it was announced, Dutch Girl Brewery has opened its doors in Spring Lake Township, MLive.com reported on July 25.

The 7,500-square-foot facility is located at 14964 Cleveland St. in the former Midwest Motorsports building in Spring Lake Township.

The brewery officially opened earlier this month and celebrated a grand opening on July 18. It is the culmination of more than three years of work for the husband-and-wife team of Luke Finchem and Kelly Rozema Finchem.

"There is nothing cooler than watching people clink their glasses, high-fiving each other and saying cheers in here because it's community," Kelly Finchem said. "They can come together here. I mean, if they weren't here, they might go somewhere else but it's so nice to see people doing it here and being a part of this."

Dutch Girl Brewery's beers are brewed in a traditional style by beermaker Josh Lentz.

Kelly Finchem said the staff at the popular cidery has been nothing but supportive throughout the development of the brewery.

The name Dutch Girl Brewery is an ode to Kelly Finchem's heritage. Historic photos of her relatives can be seen throughout the taproom, which Kelly described as "plush."

"I wasn't sure I liked it at ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OK & DE: New Anthem Brewing to launch in downtown Wilmington by the beginning of 2016
Downtown Wilmington could welcome its latest brewery by the end of 2015 as New Anthem Brewing is beginning to remodel a location on Dock Street, Greater Wilmington Business Journal reported on July 28. New Anthem Brewing is co-owned by Aaron Skiles and his business partner William Hunter. Skiles, a longtime homebrewer, said that the timing kind of just worked out for the two beer lovers to open New Anthem Brewing, and that it will allow them to work at a skill they are both passionate about and had a good feel for. “Downtown was kind of scary for us in terms of rent,” Skiles said, “but our broker found a place that worked for us.” The now-gutted space, located on 116 Dock St. in Wilmington, is a circa-1920s construction with high ceilings and enough space for the large equipment necessary for brewing. When finished the location it will also include a taproom. “Though there isn’t a tight deadline for completion of the space, New Anthem Brewing could open by the end of 2015 or the beginning of 2016,” Skiles said. Although downtown Wilmington has seen a number of microbreweries open in recent years, Skiles wants New Anthem Brewing to be ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, GA: SweetWater Brewing Company prepares for an initial public offering
SweetWater Brewing Company is making preparations for an initial public offering (IPO), according to people familiar with the matter, Reuters reported on July 23.

Were SweetWater Brewing to proceed with its IPO plans, it would join Boston Beer Co. Inc., maker of Sam Adams, and Craft Brew Alliance Inc., as one of the few publicly listed craft beer companies in the United States.

SweetWater Brewing, backed by private equity firm TSG Consumer Partners, is in talks with investment banks about a stock market flotation that could come later this year and value the company in the hundreds of millions of dollars, the people said this week.

The sources asked not to be identified because the deliberations are confidential. SweetWater Brewing and TSG Consumer Partners refused to comment.

In 2014, the $19.7 billion U.S. craft beer industry saw 22 percent revenue growth, according to the Brewers Association. This growth can be explained partly by innovation. Brewers are creating new beer styles, prompting some consumers to buy beer as they do wine, according to consulting firm Kurt Salmon.

While the craft beer segment still only comprises 11 percent of overall beer industry sales, its market share has more than doubled since 2010.

The industry has become so large ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, AR: Ozark Beer Co. expands with new equipment additions in Rogers
Ozark Beer Co. is expanding by adding new equipment that will allow it to brew 50 percent more beer, Washington Times reported on July 27.

Ozark Beer Co.’s expansion move is a response to meet the steadily growing demand.

A few weeks ago, Ozark Beer Co., known for its colourful and artsy beer cans featuring scenes of Ozark wildlife, added three giant tanks that each hold 900 gallons. The additional tanks give Ozark Beer Co. the ability to make a little more than 5,000 barrels a year. There are 31 gallons of beer in a barrel.

Lacie Bray, co-owner of Ozark Beer Co., said the plan from the start was for the brewery to take things slowly, with the goal of serving Washington and Benton counties in Northwest Arkansas before eventually moving into other parts of the state. She said the brewery expanded, not to meet a growth target, but simply to keep up with the needs of Ozark Beer Co.’s 100-plus commercial accounts.

“We want to take care of our neighbours first,” Bray said.

Earlier this year, Act 857 removed overlapping classifications in Arkansas’ former law regulating breweries. The new law establishes only two divisions - microbrewery restaurants and small breweries - and allows ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, ME: Blank Canvas Brewing opens in Brewer on July 24
Blank Canvas Brewing, fuelled by a half-barrel home-brewing, opened its doors to its customers in Brewer on July 24. A half-barrel is 15.5 gallons, or enough to fill a keg. In other words, their beers happen one keg at a time, Bangor Daily News reported on July 28.

Stephen Genthner and his wife, Jessica Wentworth, started the brewpub at 71 Center St. in Brewer in a 1,500-square-foot building that once was home to an appliance shop.

“I don’t stick to one region of the world when I’m thinking of beers,” Genthner said.

Genthner said he likes to brew using ingredients in styles of beer that he hasn’t seen them used in before.

“The open floor plan gives Blank Canvas Brewing a lot of flexibility to expand in the future,” Genthner said. “Any money the brewpub makes early on likely will go toward improving the space and its equipment.” He says he could do a two- or three-barrel system in the current space.

“I could double the capacity by buying a new kettle,” Genthner said on July 24.

Blank Canvas Brewing is the second brewery to open in Brewer in 2015. Bangor-based Geaghan Bros. Brewing Co. opened a 3,600-square-foot expansion on the east side of the Penobscot ...More info on site

Brewery news Russia & Ukraine: Ukraine’s Obolon brewery to renew sales in Russia
Ukraine’s largest homegrown brewery Obolon has plans to renew sales in Russia, which accounted for up to 45 percent of its exports before sanctions were imposed in September banning the company’s suds, Kyiv Post reported on July 28.

The Kyiv-based beer company signed a licensing agreement with the Moscow Brewing Company in the beginning of summer to make beer inside Russia under its label, Obolon spokeswoman Oksana Pyrozhok said.

MBC is a direct competitor of Obolon in Ukraine through Persha Pryvatna Brovarnya (First Private Brewery), which occupied 4.2 percent of the local market last year, according to brand design company Koloro. It brews the Bochkove and Stare Misto brand beers as well as Zhyhuli Barne and Oettinger at the Radomshyl brewery which it bought in late 2011 via OasisCIS.

Obolon lost the Russian market in September when Rospotrebnadzor, the state-run consumer rights watchdog, said the beer didn’t “comply with energy value requirements and organoleptic characteristics.”

Obolon last year held 21.9 percent of Ukraine’s beer market, behind multi-national companies AB InBev and Carlsberg Ukraine, who had 34.7 and 29.1 percent, respectively.
