Brewery news USA, OK: Economic study claims beer creates $2.8B impact in Oklahoma
Beer serves up an annual economic impact of more than $2.8 billion in Oklahoma, according to a new economic study called Beer Serves America, issued by the Beer Institute and the National Beer Wholesalers Association.

In Oklahoma, beer contributes more than $412 million in annual tax collections, and $726 million in wages, according to the study. The industry helps employ 17,000 in the state.

The study looked at how the U.S. beer industry, including brewers and beer importers, beer distributors and retailers, contributes to the national economy.

Nationwide, the beer industry generates nearly $253 billion in economic activity, produces $48.5 billion in tax revenue and supports 1.75 million jobs, the study found.

The study came up with those numbers based on government and industry data, as well as direct, indirect and induced spending, labour and tax collection.

“As one of Oklahoma’s many family owned, independent beer distributorships, I know the tremendous economic impact that the beer industry has on communities across the state, and the members of the Beer Distributors of Oklahoma are a key component of that impact,” Mitch Zaloudek, Beer Distributors of Oklahoma chairman, said in a statement.

Brewers and beer importers directly employ 49,576 Americans. More than 70 percent of brewing jobs are ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, FL: Playalinda Brewing Co. to build production brewery and distillery in 2016
Nearly a year since launching Titusville’s first craft brewery, the founding partners behind Playalinda Brewing Co. have announced plans to build an offsite production brewery and distillery, both co-branded as The Brix Project, SpaceCoastDaily.com reported on August 19.

The production brewery will allow the company to fulfil the increasingly high demand for its beer locally, while paving the way to distribute its products across Florida.

The distillery leg of the business will introduce a first-of-its-kind liquor production facility to Brevard County that will specialize in small batch spirits.

Slated to open in 2016 if terms between the project’s partners, Brevard County and the City of Titusville are agreed upon, the production brewery and distillery will occupy 16,000-square-feet at 5220 S. Washington Avenue in Titusville.

The deal calls for the project’s partners to invest $3.65 million for building refurbishment, construction costs, machinery, equipment and furniture.

Bryan Scott, co-founder of Playalinda Brewing Company, estimates the The Brix Project will add approximately 38 new jobs to the local economy by the end of 2016.

Playalinda Brewing’s Co-Founder and Brewmaster Ron Raike will also assume lead brewing and distilling efforts at The Brix Project.

At its helm, Raike will oversee production upwards of 30,000 barrels of beer annually, as well as ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, WA: Ten Pin Brewing to launch in Moses Lake by the end of March 2016
A new 7,500 barrel brewery is being built in Moses Lake, iFIBER One News reported on August 19.

The Russell family, owners of Lake Bowl in Moses Lake since 1957, broke ground on August 19 on property adjacent to the bowling alley for the new facility.

It will become the home of Ten Pin Brewing Company, which was established two years ago. The new brewery will be capable of expanding to a 21,000 barrel system. It is expected to expand their market to Spokane, Portland and Seattle, company representatives said.

“Bowling provides our roots but the future is clear, and craft beer takes the lead,” Lake Bowl chief executive officer B.J. Garbe stated. “Ten Pin Brewing will be focused on brewing quality, interesting, desirable styles, growing our community and setting a standard in modern craft beer.”

Full production is slated to begin with the first kegs, cans and bottles going out the door by the end of March in 2016, according to Garbe.

“Ten Pin Brewing is gearing up its sales and marketing efforts, and packaging for distribution is ready,” Ten Pin’s head brewer Jim Madden stated.

Brewery news The Netherlands: Non-alcoholic beer sales jump 35% last year
The Netherlands’ sales of non-alcoholic beer jumped 35% to 26 million litres in 2014, according to the annual national beer survey.

A quarter of beer drinkers say they drink low or non-alcoholic beer at least once a month, many of them because they have to drive, DutchNews.nl reported on August 20.

The taste of non-alcoholic beer is also catching on. Last year 36% said taste was the reason they drink it, compared with 21% in 2013.

“The taste has improved,” Cees-Jan Adema of Dutch Brewers said. “There’s a world of difference compared with ten years ago. There is also a greater variety and brewers are advertising it.”

In the same period, sales of alcoholic beer dropped slightly, down from 69.6 litres per head to 68.4 litres. Calculated per head of the population, non-alcoholic beer consumption is only 1.5 litres.

Brewery news Latvia: Leading brewer Aldaris posts 21% decrease in turnover in 2014
Latvian joint-stock company Aldaris posted EUR 28.62 million in turnover in 2014, a decrease of 21% compared to 2013, while the company's losses decreased threefold to EUR 3.40 million, reports LETA, according to information from Firmas.lv.

The company's turnover in 2013 was EUR 36.35 million but losses – EUR 10.28 million. Aldaris CEO Margus Kastein told LETA that the decline in turnover was due to the overall situation on the beer market and the changes in the company's strategy to reduce its share in the segment of beer sold in two-litre PET bottles. Kastein also notes that last year Aldaris was the leading beer brewery in Latvia, taking about 30% of the entire beer market. The change of the business strategy, which started in 2013 and focuses on craft brewing, allowed the company to improve profitability by 15%. Total log-term investments in the company's development were EUR 3.2 million, a 28% increase from 2013. Following the market trends, 13 new products were introduced in 2014. The company plans to take at least 30% of the craft beer market segment in three years, up from the current 20% share of the Latvian beer market. Investments in production of craft beer will allow ...More info on site

Brewery news Russia: Brewers agree to further reduce plastic beer bottles size
The Russian beer union has agreed to further reduce the size of plastic beer bottles, it said on August 19, after calls by lawmakers for a ban on plastic beer containers to curb alcoholism.

Russian brewers sell nearly half their beer in plastic bottles, which are cheaper than glass.

Under draft legislation, Russia plans to restrict the use of plastic beer bottles. One bill implies eventually limiting bottle sizes to 0.5 litres, while another calls for a complete ban from January next year.

Andrei Gubka, head of The Union of Russian Brewers, told a news conference on August 19 that Russian brewers would stop producing beer in plastic bottles larger than 1.5 litres from July next year.

"We very much hope that our step ... will be taken positively (by regulators) and the discussion about limiting plastic packaging below 1.5 litres will be closed," Gubka, board chairman of Anheuser-Busch InBev's Russian unit, said.

Beer in plastic bottles larger than 1.5 litres accounts for 24 percent of the entire beer market in Russia, he said.

Gubka said the initiative could dent beer sales already hurt by the tightening of sales and advertising regulation and by an economic crisis, although he hoped the volumes would be redistributed in ...More info on site

Brewery news Italy: Export of Italian beer soars in the first five months of this year
Exports of Italian beer increased by 27 percent over last year. Almost half was shipped to the UK, where the popularity of Italian craftsmanship is on the rise.

The data, released by Italian agricultural association Coldiretti, are based on the first five months of 2015.

Coldiretti reports exports of Italian beer worldwide tripled in the last decade despite the economic crisis, with the production of craft beer booming. The rise has contributed to the Italian economy, but also boosted employment, especially among under-35s, who are the most active in the sector.

Craft beer involves innovation, with certification of origin by 'zero kilometre' labels, specialty beers and bottles with particular shapes. This varied range appeals to over 30 million passionate beer drinkers in Italy, where annual consumption stands at 29 litres per capita. This consumption is very low compared to countries like the Czech Republic, with 144 litres per capita, Austria with 107.8, Germany with 105, Ireland with 85.6, Luxembourg with 85 and Spain with 82.

Italian beer production is supported by a national barley crop of about 860,000 tonnes (in 2014) on a total area of about 226,000 hectares.

Some 90,000 tonnes of the barley are used to make beer in Italy.

Brewery news Germany: Climate change may lead to rise in beer prices - study
Beer is often cheaper than water in Germany, but a new study says climate change may threaten the low prices of the country’s beloved brewed beverage, The Local reported.

The study, commissioned by the Green Party and released on August 20, analyzes current research on how climate change will impact Germany by 2050.

One of the consequences of shifting weather patterns is the effect it could have on growing hops - the flower used to flavour and stabilize beer during brewing.

The Bavarian region of Hallertau is the largest hop-growing area globally, producing more than half of the plants in Europe and a third of the hops for the world, the report states.

But the region has experienced "extreme weather events" such as hail and heavy rain in recent years, leading to increased crop failures.

In the past five years, there have been five hail storms in the area: normally there should only be one hail storm within this time period, the report states.

These weather effects could lead to a shortage of hops, driving up the price of beer.

Severe storms may only intensify with climate change, and such variable conditions make it harder for farmers to plan.

That means they'll have to spend more on insurance ...More info on site

Brewery news Japan: New taxation may change Japan’s beer consumption pattern
This summer’s crop of TV beer advertisements from Japan’s big three brewers has not veered far from tradition: salaryman heroes, sassy damsels, partying youngsters and contented pensioners all slaking their thirst to the sound of explosive can-openings and wildly exaggerated gulps, The Financial Times reported on August 19.

The imagery is nearly unchanging; but the industrial war being waged behind it has never been so fraught. Beyond the usual Japanese tussle for share of a shrinking market is the future of a national drinking culture in a country that has still not fully escaped a deflationary mindset.

Beer consumption is also shaping up as a revealing gauge of Abenomics — the so-far inconclusive suite of stimulus and reforms intended by Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to propel Japan back to sustainable growth. The nation’s choice of drinks, say analysts, will reflect how well his plans are working.

Japanese beer consumption has been on a steady downward slide for more than 15 years as ageing demographics and long years of stagnation have taken effect. Diets, parsimony and alternative drinks have dented beer’s crown. Decoratively wrapped cases of beer have gradually lost their status as a standard unit of seasonal gift-giving.

Many of those who do fancy ...More info on site
