No time to measure your IBUs?

ABSTRACT
Ethanol, residual extract or carbon dioxide can be measured inline, so why not also Bitter Units? The common method to determine IBUs is to measure the extinction at 275nm from an iso-octane extract of beer. Although this method has some shortcomings (depending on the hops used the values can vary quite a bit and the method is unspecific) it is a well established method in the brewery labs. These German Engineers have developed a inline UVvis spectroscopy method with a accuracy of +/- 2 IBU. Using an additional multivariate data analysis, process control can be improved.

Brewery news USA, NC: NoDa Brewing Co. to launch a new location in Charlotte on October 1
NoDa Brewing Co. is targeting an Oct. 1st opening. Construction is in high gear at the brewery’s new home, Charlotte Business Journal reported on August 31.

“It’s all coming together,” says Suzie Ford, who owns the brewery with her husband, Todd.

The Fords founded NoDa Brewing in 2011, but it has since outgrown its 11,400-square-foot home at 2229 N. Davidson St in Charlotte. They found a new facility — roughly a mile away — that nearly triples the size. Construction there began in June.

The 32,000-square-foot warehouse at 2921 N. Tryon St. is being transformed into the brewery’s new home at a price tag of roughly $8 million. NoDa Brewing has signed a long-term lease with Harris Development Group for the property, located on 3 acres near the intersection of Tryon and 32nd streets.

The new space is of key importance as NoDa Brewing faces increasing pressure to keep up with demand.

A 60-barrel brewhouse, up from a 15-barrel system currently, will increase production capacity. Four 240-barrel fermenting tanks — or roughly 8,000 gallons of capacity each — are now in place as are two additional brite tanks, used for carbonation.

NoDa Brewing expects to produce 14,000 barrels this year. That means NoDa Brewing is brewing ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, SD: Hay Camp Brewing to triple production capacity in Rapid City by January
A local craft beer company is looking to quench the Rapid City community's thirst by boosting production, KEVN Black Hills Fox reported on August 31.

Hay Camp Brewing started last year with one and a half–barrel fermenters and then invested in some bigger equipment.

Now they're looking to triple their production capacity again.

Sam Papendick and Karl Koth, the owners and brewers, say this will allow them to make more beer and expand their hours of operation.

Papendick says, "With more production that will translate into greater sales, but to do that we need more hours."

Koth says, "And the convenience for people that are trying to get in here. Right now with the limited hours that are going to be changing we've gotten a lot of feedback from the community that they like our beer, but they wanted us to be open more often."

The guys at Hay Camp Brewing say their motto is "slow and steady brewing" which allows them to tweak their process and experiment with the beer.

They're hoping to be open next January.

Brewery news USA, OR & NY: Ninkasi Brewing Co. to expand distribution to New York state by the end of September
Eugene-based Ninkasi Brewing Co. is making a cross-country leap with its latest distribution deal, The Columbian reported on August 29.

Ninkasi Brewing Co. announced on its website on August 27 that it has signed a deal with a craft beer wholesaler - Sheehan Family Companies, to start full-time distribution of Ninkasi Brewing Co. in New York state by late September.

In May, Ninkasi Brewing Co. started sending one-off shipments for special events to New York City, where one of Ninkasi Brewing Co.’s founders has relatives. Now the Eugene-brewed beer will be available year-round in the Empire State through Sheehan Family Companies’ four New York distributors — Craft Beer Guild of New York, Union Beer Distributors, T.J. Sheehan Distributing and Tri-Valley Beverage, the representatives of Ninkasi Brewing Co. said.

“As a New York University alumni and legitimate fan of New York, I am excited to bring our beers to the growing number of passionate craft beer drinkers on the East Coast,” Ninkasi Brewing Co.’s co-founder and CEO Nikos Ridge said. “I look forward to working with The Sheehan Family Companies to build relationships with craft retailers across the state.”

“We’re still aiming for a target of 105,000 to 110,000 barrels this year,” spokeswoman Ali AAsum ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, ME: Sebago Brewing to double its production with a new “destination brewery”
Sebago Brewing Co., one of the early players in Maine’s now-booming craft beer scene, is planning to build a new, larger brewery with a tasting room and tap house to capitalize on the growing popularity of beer tourism, Press Herald reported on August 31.

The company, which was started by three friends in 1998 as a brewpub next to the Maine Mall, plans to double its production at the new “destination brewery,” which will offer tours and tastings and serve a menu of beer-centric food at a tap house that has space for small- to medium-sized events, said Kai Adams, vice president and one of the founders.

“This year, we have seen amazing growth that we feel has come from the local love of craft beer, our ever-changing unique beer styles and recent conversion to all cans,” Adams said.

The location of the new brewery hasn’t been decided. Adams said the company has been searching for a site for more than a year and has considered several locations.

However, Sebago Brewing is currently exploring whether to rezone land at the intersection of routes 25 and 237 in Gorham, not far from the current location of its corporate offices and brewery on Sanford Drive. Gorham ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CA: Belching Beaver Brewery buys Oceanside Building to increase production
Vista-based craft beer maker Belching Beaver Brewery has purchased an Oceanside industrial building for approximately $2.36 million, with plans to operate a new, five-stage, 30-barrel production system, brokerage firm Lee & Associates reported.

Lee & Associates’ Stephen Crockett represented the brewer in the acquisition of the 24,428-square-foot facility at 1334 Rocky Point Drive. The seller was AMB SFS Pacific LLC, represented by Josh McFadyen, Joe Crotty and Chuck McNary of Colliers International, according to CoStar Group.

In a statement from Lee & Associates, Crockett said the new facility will allow Belching Beaver to increase production from 12,000 to more than 60,000 barrels annually, to meet rising demand.

The purchase marks the fourth San Diego County location for Belching Beaver Brewery since its debut in 2012. It currently operates its original brewery in Vista, along with a brewpub in downtown Vista and a tasting room in North Park.

Brewery news USA, NC: Sanctuary Brewing Co. opens in Hendersonville on August 28
Hendersonville's first downtown brewery, Sanctuary Brewing Company, opened on August 28, drawing a big crowd for craft beer, Hendersonville Lightning reported on August 29.

"We were slammed," co-owner Lisa McDonald said.

McDonald and her partner, master brewer Joe Dinan, have created the 4,000-square-foot bar at 147 E. First Avenue, Hendersonville. Although they have not yet received a federal permit allowing them to brew and pour their own beer, they opened with more than a dozen flavours from other local craft breweries.

Sanctuary Brewing Company will make small batch artisanal ales in classic styles like Belgian farmhouse ales, American stouts and West Coast IPAs. The Hendersonville City Council made the brewery possible by amending the city ordinance to allow the use in the central business district.

Brewery news USA, CA: HenHouse Brewing plans to move to Santa Rosa this spring
Petaluma-based HenHouse Brewing Company announced on August 31 that they have secured a deal to move into a new, expansive digs in southern Santa Rosa, increasing the output of the popular craft brewers' fresh, delicious beers, North Bay Bohemian reported on September 1.

Sonoma County natives Shane Goepel, Scott Goyne and Collin McDonnell founded HenHouse Brewing in 2011 with a focus on producing artisan ales. Sharing space with Petaluma Hills Brewing for the past few years, their popular releases such as Saison Farmhouse Ale and even an Oyster Stout are delivered by hand to tap rooms around the North Bay.

HenHouse Brewing recently raised over a million dollars through an SBA loan to finance the move, a major step forward for the brewers. With the new location, housed in a GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices) facility, HenHouse Brewing will be able to produce a staggering 75,000 barrels a year. The space will also boast a tasting room and HenHouse Brewing will offer bottles of their ales.

HenHouse Brewing will be investing in local manufacturers to make their equipment and barrels. The move is expected to be completed in spring of 2016. For now the founders of HenHouse Brewing say they have no desire for ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, TX: El Paso Brewing Company plans to open by the end of 2015
As Carlos Guzman gives a tour of the future site of the El Paso Brewing Company in Downtown El Paso, he remarks that the 3,000-square-foot building used to be a piñata warehouse. "From piñatas (containers filled with candy) to beer, continues a happy tradition," he said as he talked about his plans for the brewery that is scheduled to open later this year, El Paso Times reported on August 29.

In anticipation of the opening, Guzman, his uncle and business partner Jorge Guzman are planning to roll out three beers that will capture the El Paso spirit and flavour.

The inaugural trio will be — The Pachuco Pale Ale, Wicked Felina IPA and the Lagartos Red.

Guzman and his uncle recently received a $240,000 Empowerment Zone Revolving Loan Fund Small Business Loan from the city. The grant is aimed at helping revitalize parts of El Paso that fall under the Empowerment Zone. According to the city's Website, the federal designation recognizes distressed areas in "need of sustainable community development."

Carlos Guzman said that city Rep. Courtney Niland was helpful in securing the grant to help revitalize Downtown El Paso.

"There's a lot of history of businesses in this area. The city decided to expand ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, KY & OH: Braxton Brewing launching in Ohio on September 11-12
Covington, KY-based Braxton Brewing plans to launch a new brewery in Hamilton County, Ohio on Sept.11–12, Cincinnati.com reported on September 1.

“We’re really excited,” said Jake Rouse, brewery co-founder and chief executive officer. “From day one, when we launched Braxton Brewing, we wanted to be in Greater Cincinnati.”

Northern Kentucky demand has been high. Braxton Brewing has been brewing at capacity since it opened in late March just to meet that demand. The brewery’s beer has only been sold in Ohio at the Great American Ball Park, special events and, more recently, Paul Brown and Nippert stadiums.

The addition of two new 80-barrel fermenters has almost tripled Braxton’s fermentation capacity. So the brewery is ready to make its official Ohio launch, which it will do at Cincy Beerfest on Fountain Square, set for Sept.11–12. Braxton Brewing will sponsor one area of the event.

“Braxton Brewing’s launch at the festival will be the kickoff of 10 days of events at local events and bars – places that have been asking for Braxton from day one and places that have really pushed craft beer forward,” Rouse said. “They also took a neighbourhood approach, looking to see where its Kickstarter backers live to determine which neighbourhoods they ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MI: Downey Brewing aims for an October opening in Dearborn
Brothers John and Dan Downey said their family venture, Downey Brewing Company is on track for an October opening in Dearborn, Eater Detroit reported on September 1.

The pair, along with their father Dean Downey, are longtime homebrewers who decided last fall to bring their passion to the relatively untapped Dearborn market (The city's first microbrewery debuted in August). The company, funded partly through a $25,000 Kickstarter campaign, is currently in the process of building out a three-barrel system in an underutilized portion of their grandfather's die cutting warehouse.

Unlike many current ventures in Metro Detroit, Downey Brewing plans to focus initially on wholesale craft beer, but aims to eventually raise enough capital to open a taproom in downtown Detroit. John, who will be responsible for the bulk of the brewing, says beer drinkers can expect a set of six to seven year-round brews alongside limited releases. "I'm really big into hops, [but] my dad and my brother are more into traditional beers," he says of their style. Downey Brewing is expected to get city approval this week and is still awaiting state licensing approval.

Brewery news India: Beer sales up in state of Kerala due to new liquor policy
With the Kerala government enforcing its new liquor policy from the current fiscal that began April 1, the sales of liquor have come down while those of beer have gone up, Newsx reported on September 1. According to the Kerala State Beverages Corporation, this drop was noticed during the April – June period when compared to the previous fiscal. "During the current fiscal from April to June, there has been a drop in sales of liquor to the tune of Rs.10.74 lakh as compared to the same period in the previous fiscal," an excise official, who did not wish to be identified, said on September 1. "Likewise, the sales of beer during the same period went up by Rs.13.50 lakh," the official added. On account of the new liquor policy, more than 700 bars that used to serve liquor have been closed and today, many of them have licenses to sell only beer and wine. Liquor is now available in just 24 five-star hotel bars in the state. Liquor and beer, however, are available in 344 state-run retail shops and here too, every year, 10 percent of them would be closed down as the new liquor policy aims to achieve ...More info on site

Brewery news Indonesia: Diageo testing Guinness Zero in Asia, brand preforms very well since last year’s launch in Indonesia
Diageo is trialling a new, revolutionary non-alcoholic version of the iconic Guinness stout in Asia, as it seeks to counter a growing government campaign against excessive alcohol consumption in the region, Irish Independent reported on August 30.

Guinness Zero has been rolled out in Indonesia, as the fourth most populous country in the world moved to block the sale of beer in convenience stores as part of public health measures to combat excessive drinking. Diageo Ireland said there were no plans to launch the product in Ireland.

"Guinness Zero ABV was launched in September, 2014 in Indonesia, specifically in response to market demand in the non-alcoholic beer category, which is already well established in the market. Guinness Zero ABV has been performing very well since its launch," Diageo told the Sunday Independent.

Sam Fischer, Diageo's president for greater China and Asia, described the government actions as creating "some disruption" in an interview with Bloomberg.

Sales of Guinness rose 1pc in Ireland in the second half of 2014, bringing the brand back to growth for the first time in six years. While Ireland performed strongly, global sales of Guinness sank 4pc on the back of a weaker performance in Nigeria, Indonesia and the UK. The ...More info on site
