How emotional is beer drinking ?

ABSTRACT
This question was investigated by an Italian/Polish research team. The study examined emotional responses to real (tasted, in real social environment of consumption) and conceptual (food names) food stimuli. Different studies were conducted using the list of emotion words (EsSense™) developed by King and Meiselman. Emotions that were elicited by the named beers and wines varied slightly in kind and largely in degree between Poles and Italians. The strongest emotional response was observed in the Polish panel for both stimuli. These results are of interest for new products in both categories (wine or beer). I wonder, how could you NOT be emotional about beer ?

Brewery news USA, WI: Chippewa River Distillery and Brewster Bros. Brewing Co. to launch in Chippewa Falls by November
A micro brewery and vodka distillery in Chippewa Falls is quickly coming together. Renovation and overhaul of the Celebrity Video building at 402 River St. began in March, and the brew house should have its doors open by November, Leader-Telegram reported on September 14.

“We’re excited to do this,” said co-owner James Stirn. “We’re getting close.”

Chippewa River Distillery and Brewster Bros. Brewing Co. features a “20-barrel” system that can produce 600 gallons. The gigantic 2,500-liter still will be in a unique room on the east side of the building, with a high glass atrium ceiling and windows on three sides, allowing people to watch the brews and spirits being made. It will be lit up at night, showing off the still and the interior of the building, Stirn said.

“It’s what people will see when they go by,” Stirn said. “You’ll be able to see in here. We want to make it accessible, so people can see it.”

“I’ve home-brewed for 15 years,” Stirn said. “It sounded interesting; its process control.”

“It’s a little unique,” Stirn said. “You don’t see both in one location.”

When Stirn and his business partner, Kurt Schneider of Menomonie, decided they wanted to get into the brewing business, they spent ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, ID: Magic Valley Brewing seeks to open doors in Downtown Buhl
Richard White has been brewing beer since the 1990s. Now he wants to serve his varieties of beer such as the Blue Heart Blonde Ale and the Basalt Stout in downtown Buhl, Twin Falls Times-News reported on September 12.

But first, White has to plead his case at a hearing on September 16 with the Buhl Planning and Zoning Department. Idaho law says no license shall be issued in an area that is predominantly residential or within 300 feet of any public school, church or any other place of worship, except with the approval of the governing body of the municipality.

White said the proposed location of Magic Valley Brewing, 208 Broadway in Buhl, is near three churches. The building is a former barbershop. He posted on Magic Valley Brewing’s Facebook page seeking support.

“We were told that the more support that we can show, the better our chances are for them to decide in our favour,” White said. “That’s the reason we put it on Facebook. It’s been really cool and we were hoping for support.”

White worked as a brewer at White Water Brewing Company in Rio Vista, Calif., for five years. He’s been a home brewer for more than 20 ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, PA: Borough Council approves a craft brewery and a craft distillery’s applications to operate in Emmaus
Emmaus Borough Council might want to rename Bank Street "Brewery Lane" or "Distillery Drive", Allentown Morning Call reported on September 11.

That's because the street, which is essentially an alley, will likely be the home of two craft breweries and one craft distillery within the next year.

A craft distillery, Triple Sun Spirits Co., and a craft brewery, Yergey Brewing LLC, got the approvals from Emmaus Borough Council to operate at 518 Bank St. Funk Brewing Co. is already in operation just down the street at South Sixth and Bank streets.

Emmaus Borough Council on September 8 granted the request for conditional-use approval for Triple Sun Spirits and Yergey Brewing after hearing the companies' plans for parking, hours of operation and entrances.

Triple Sun Spirits plans to make gin, rum and whiskey, according to Kristofer Kwant of Coplay, a spirits enthusiast who applied for the conditional-use approval. He said he has the necessary equipment and hopes to be in operation as soon as November.

James Yergey said he still has to order his equipment, which might take a while to arrive. He's looking at a 2016 opening.

Brewery news USA, IL: Dovetail Brewery reveals plans to open in Ravenswood in 2016
The craft beer movement shows no signs of slowing down, with Dovetail Brewery announcing plans to open a production facility and taproom in Ravenswood in 2016, DNAinfo reported on September 11.

Owners Hagen Dost and Bill Wesselink introduced themselves to members of the community on September 10, presenting their concept for a brewhouse at 1800 W. Belle Plaine Ave. The building was formerly occupied by Atlas Material Testing Solutions, which decamped to Mount Prospect.

"We will be good neighbours," Dost pledged to the handful of residents in attendance. "And I think it goes without saying we want to see you in the taproom."

Wesselink, who met Dost in 2011 at beer school in Munich, said that hardly means the market is saturated.

"We've got 10 million people and 60 breweries" in the Chicago area, Wesselink said. "There seems like a lot of room for growth."

Patty Wetli says Dovetail Brewery will focus on European-style beers. The brewers intend to separate themselves from the pack by focusing on continental European-style beers. Dovetail Brewery's flagship offerings will be a hefeweizen (German-style wheat beer), a lager and a Belgian-style lambic, which takes two to three years to ferment, Wesselink said.

European beers are close to Dost’s heart, whose parents ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, AZ: Helton Brewing Company to launch in Central Phoenix in early December
Brain Helton, a 19-year veteran of the brewing industry and a cicerone-certified brewer, plans to open Helton Brewing Company in Phoenix later this year. And when it comes to craft brewing and education, Helton's interested in celebrating it all, Phoenix New Times reported on September 11.

Helton Brewery is expected to open in early December at 2144 East Indian School Road, a location strategically nestled between Arcadia and uptown Phoenix. What was once a radial tire warehouse will eventually house a grain room, a tank room, and a tasting room, as well as an indoor bar with additional table seating. The giant building sits at just over 10,000 square feet - a number that doesn't even include the space for an outdoor beer garden.

The brewery will open with four traditional beers: A Scottish ale, an IPA, a milk stout and a lager. There will be sixty barrels on-site, all used for barrel-aged beers. Halton's also a fan of cask-conditioned beers and plans to have fresh firkins every Friday.

Helton's interested in building a community, not only on a map, but person-to-person and brewer-to-brewer. To achieve that, he plans to hold classes, which he refers to as “labs,” during which home brewers ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, VA: AMMO Brewing to open in Old Towne Petersburg this fall
Owners Terry Ammons and Ann Adams have established AMMO Brewing at 235 N. Market St. in Old Towne Petersburg, using the former Jaguar service bay building and showroom location that has housed Studio Ammons architecture and design since 2004, Richmond Times-Dispatch reported on September 11.

AMMO Brewing has received approval from the federal Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau and has scheduled a Virginia Alcoholic Beverage Control final site review.

Ammons and Adams have ordered equipment and are refitting the building for brew space, a taproom and a beer garden. They plan only limited distribution, with most sales on site.

Brewing should begin in October with the tasting room to open later in the fall, when they are satisfied that the space and beers are ready, Ammons said.

Ammons will be AMMO Brewing’s brewer. He has been a home brewer for several years and is a member of the James River Homebrewers group.

Ammons plans to roll out four flagship beers: a saison (using seasonal local ingredients), a coffee cream stout, an imperial IPA and a brown ale (with maple syrup from Highland County).

Beers will pour from 12 taps brewed on a two-barrel system — four to six regular beers plus other experimental batches.

Brewery news USA, OH: Lock 27 Brewing Co. to double brewing capacity by the end of September
The Lock 27 Brewing Co. brewery and restaurant at 1035 S. Main St. in the Centerville Plaza in Dayton will double its brewing capacity by the end of the month, according to founder and brew master Steve Barnhart, Dayton Daily News reported on September 13.

The expansion from a one-and-a-half barrel brewing system to a three-barrel brewhouse will allow the brewery to brew less often and will help keep up with demand, Barnhart said. A three-barrel brewhouse can produce batches of up to 93 gallons. There are no immediate plans to begin distributing canned or bottled Lock 27 Brewing’s beers, the brewery owner said.

Lock 27 Brewing is in the process of building up a supply of its beers to carry it through the week or so that the beer-making operations will be down as the new equipment is installed later this month, Barnhart said.

Brewery news USA, AL: Red Hills Brewing Company to open in Homewood within two months
Homewood’s over the mountain communities are about to get their first brewery as Red Hills Brewing prepares to open its doors within the next two months, AL.com reported on September 14.

Joe Pilleteri is opening Red Hills Brewing Company in a 10,000-square-foot space on Central Avenue in Homewood.

"Birmingham's got a lot of great breweries, and they all have good beer. I thought, 'how do I make myself different?'" Pilleteri said. "I grew up over the mountain, and I thought, that would work, but where the heck would I put it?"

Then, one day after going to Little Donkey, he saw the open space, a former grocery store next to Steel City Pops.

"I thought, 'there's no way this is big enough,'" Pilleteri said. "Then one day I walked in it."

The name "Red Hills Brewing Company" is a nod to the red hills salamander, Alabama's state amphibian, and also appropriate for a community near Red Mountain. It also makes Pilleteri think of the beach, which is appropriate for him because he was a sailor.

"Everyone has a hobby they want to make a career."

It's a project Pilleteri has been working on for about two years. Until recently he worked in the safety industry. ...More info on site

Brewery news The Czech Republic and China: Czech beer export to China nearly doubles in 2014
Czech beer export to China nearly doubled yr/yr from 12,688 hectolitres to 22,688 hectolitres in 2014, with the total export of 3.65 million hectolitres making the Chinese export share roughly 0.62 percent, Vladimír Balach, executive director at the Czech Beer and Malt Association, told ČTK on September 10.

Apart from Pivovary Lobkowicz Group, partly owned by Chinese group CEFC as of September, Budějovický Budvar and Plzeňský Prazdroj export to China, although the companies are reluctant to make their export volumes public.

“China is the biggest world beer market. Its consumption is mostly covered by the domestic production at the moment but over the past few years, Chinese demand for premium imported beer brands has been climbing mainly due to the fast growing Chinese middle age group,” Roman Pavlík, spokesman of Pivovary Lobkowicz, has said without further specification of the company's future export strategy.

Budějovický Budvar exported to nine countries of Southeast Asia last year, the most important states being China, Japan, Mongolia and Vietnam, Petr Samec, the company's spokesperson stated, adding the company increased its sales in the region by 47 percent year-on-year.

Plzeňský Prazdroj renewed its export to China in August this year.

“Given the high interest of the Chinese market in Pilsner Urquell ...More info on site

Brewery news India: Brewers in Maharashtra could soon face water woes
The powerful beer industry in the Indian state of Maharashtra could soon face water woes. Post a deficient South-West monsoon, the State government is thinking of drastically cutting down water supply, especially to industries in water-deficient areas such as Aurangabad, The Hindu Business Line reported on September 13.

Manufacturing 1 litre of beer requires about 9 litres of water. All major beer manufacturers have plants in the Waluj and Chikalthana industrial areas of Aurangabad, managed by the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC).

A senior MIDC official said that industries in the area drew water from the Jayakwadi dam, which has a storage of only 4.6 per cent of the total capacity. In such a situation, water supplies to beer makers and other water-guzzling units will have to be cut. From the dam, about 3 million cubic meters of water is committed for the industries, which will have to be halved, the official said.

The official pointed that water from the Godavari river gets stored at the Jayakwadi dam and has a high pH (alkaline) value, making it most suitable for beer making. Since the beer manufacturers are solely dependent on the dam, they will have to drastically cut down their production.

The emerging water ...More info on site

Barley news Russia: Agriculture Ministry to raise grain intervention purchase prices and may revise wheat export duty
Russia's Agriculture Ministry will raise purchase prices for its grain intervention fund and has drawn up proposals to ease the burden of wheat export duty, Deputy Agriculture Minister Evgeny Gromyko was quoted as saying on September 12 by Reuters.

"We will increase prices," he said in comments cited by TASS. "It will be quite decent. It will suit farmers."

Gromyko did not say what level grain intervention prices would be raised to.

Russian media have previously reported that the government is considering raising purchase prices for the intervention fund by a thousand roubles per tonne.

Gromyko also said the ministry has drawn up proposals for changes to a wheat export duty which, he said, would reduce the burden on business "significantly".

Russia introduced the tax in July, causing concern among grain exporters and traders who say it will harm profitability.

Expectations were already growing that the tax would be softened following lobbying of the government by agriculture industry participants.
