Are hops the isinglass of tomorrow ?

ABSTRACT
Here is a new aspect of our favourite plant! These British researchers found that hops contain active fining compounds. Extracts of hop cones were shown to have the capacity to flocculate yeast, resulting in their sedimentation. This activity has been identified in extracts of many different hop varieties and especially in spent hops - the co-product resulting from commercial extraction of hops with either CO2 or ethanol. The compounds responsible for the fining activity appear to be large polyphenols (30 to 100kDa, or higher). Preliminary data indicate that addition of the finings at optimal dose rates has minimal impact on the organoleptic properties of beer. Isn't this a relief to all fishes that hops can do their job in beer?

Brewery news USA, TX & CO: Oskar Blues to open third brewery in Austin by April 20
Oskar Blues — with breweries in Colorado and North Carolina — plans to add to its empire by opening a brewery in Austin, Texas, The Denver Post reported on September 24.

But the Longmont-based brewer is not stopping there.

The architect behind canned craft beer envisions operating more breweries across the nation and, perhaps by the end of this year, could select a location for a fourth production brewery.

"We're just on a tear," Oskar Blues' founder Dale Katechis said.

Austin, renowned for its live music scene, appeared to be a solid fit for the Oskar Blues concept, which grew out of a down-home Southern-style restaurant and music venue in Lyons, CO.

The 55,000-square-foot brewery, set to open by April 20, will produce beers across Oskar Blues' lineup and will have an initial production capacity of 30,000 barrels. That could grow to 100,000 barrels.

“Oskar Blues, which is expected to post revenues in the $55 million to $60 million range this year, has invested $43 million since 2012,” Katechis said.

Oskar Blues' annual production is expected to approach 200,000 barrels this year, and expansions are underway at the existing breweries in Longmont, CO. and Brevard, N.C.

This year, Oskar Blues played the role of suitor, acquiring Michigan-based Perrin ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, ON: Ontario’s Legislative Assembly issues permits to sixty grocery stores to sell beer
Sixty grocery stores in the Canadian province of Ontario will be permitted to sell beer by the end of 2015, Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne revealed this week. "‎It is an exciting day for people who love beer in Ontario," she said, adding that brews should be on shelves in time for the winter holidays.

As noted by the Toronto Star, the move is a result of an agreement between the Legislative Assembly of Ontario and the Beer Store, a Mississauga-based private company that has had a de facto monopoly on beer sales in the province since Prohibition ended there in 1927.

Wynne’s so-called "privatization czar," Former TD Bank CEO Ed Clark, said that auctioning licenses to grocers should bring the provincial government about C$10 million (US $7.5 million).

By May 2017, 150 Ontario supermarkets will be selling beer, and that number will eventually rise to 450 of the province's 1,500 grocery stores. Of the first 60 stores, 48 licenses will be auctioned off to large grocers like Loblaws, while 12 will go to small independents.

The first stores to offer beer will be in the greater Toronto area, 16 in southwestern Ontario, 13 in eastern Ontario and six in the north.

The upcoming placement in ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, WI: Leatherhead Brewing Company opens in Green Bay on September 24
Leatherhead Brewing Company is now open in Green Bay, WeAreGreenBay.com reported on September 24. At the grand opening of Leatherhead Brewing Company on Lombardi Avenue on September 24, city leaders expressed their excitement over the latest craft brewery to set up shop in the Legends District [Green Bay]. "They're in a niche that people are seeking right now and that's that whole micro-brewery, so, and we are very confident in their business plan and love their investment and really look forward to adding to the whole economic development here in greater Green Bay," explains Mayor Jim Schmitt. Housed in the old Marty's Boston Crab building, Leatherhead Brewing's craft beer is what the company says will set them up to succeed. Something Brad Toll with the Greater Green Bay Convention and Visitors Bureau agrees with. "I really think we're going to see a lot of changes in this area, a lot of new businesses moving in. Certainly Badger State has helped you boost the interest in this part of the city," says Toll. Co-owner of Leatherhead Brewing, Amanda Sharon, says not only did Badger State Brewing being close by, boost her interest in the property, but it is also ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CA: Ballast Point Brewing and Spirits to launch in Temecula
The Captain's Cabin building at the corner of Vincent Moraga Drive and Rancho California Road in Temecula is being renovated for use by Ballast Point Brewing and Spirits, a San Diego County-based brewer known for its Sculpin and Big Eye IPA beers, Press-Enterprise reported on September 24.

This will be the first Riverside County location for the company, which has four tasting rooms in San Diego County.

Randy Roth of Fairway & Ranch Realty said the renovation will be extensive, a complete re-imagining of the building that will include big patios and open space. "It's going to look great," Roth said.

Roth said he's heard the Ballast Point Brewing’s restaurant could be open as soon as November.

Luke Watson, Temecula's director of community development, said in an email on September 24 the Ballast Point project was an administrative approval that was not required to go before the Planning Commission.

"Ballast Point Brewing is through the planning process and is nearly ready to pull their building permits. Once they pull building permits they can begin construction," Watson said.

Alec Clifton, a brewer for Ironfire, said the addition of Ballast Point Brewing will be great for the area, making it an even more desirable destination for craft beer ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MA: Oliver Brewing Company to open a new brewery in East Baltimore on November 6
According to Baltimore Magazine’s report, Oliver Brewing Company is preparing its new headquarters, in a former ice-storage facility, which opens in East Baltimore the weekend of November 6-8 with live bands, food trucks, and exclusive beers.

The new facility - necessitated by growing demand for the microbrewery’s English-style cask ales, stouts, and porters - will more than double Oliver Brewing Company’s production capacity, and give it something increasingly essential for success: a public brewery with a taproom, retail area, and regular tours.

“This is the next step for us,” says co-owner Justin Dvorkin, who purchased the label with his business partner, Donald Kelly, in 2008. Until now, all brewing for the company - which includes Pratt Street Ale House, The Ale House Columbia, and Park Tavern in Severna Park - was done in the cellar at Pratt Street Ale House, where the label started in 1993.

“[At Pratt Street] we get a lot of [out-of-towners] asking, ‘Do you do tours?’” Dvorkin explains. “It wasn’t really feasible. Now we can show off.”

And he isn’t worried about the brewery’s off-the-beaten-path location.

“We’re a little bit of an offshoot, but in reality, it’s 10 minutes from Canton,” Dvorkin notes. “We want to give people a reason to ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CA: Big Stump Brewing Co. to team up with Old Soul Co. in midtown Sacramento
Big Stump Brewing Co. plans to team up with Old Soul Co., an artisanal coffee roaster, in midtown Sacramento, Sacramento Business Journal reported on September 23.

“We believe that the combination of a craft microbrewery with an artisanal coffee roaster will be one of the most exciting concepts in downtown Sacramento,” the project narrative in the application states. A taproom would take up about 1,200 square feet in the building, with most of the rest used for microbrewing.

According to the project narrative, Big Stump Brewing Co. would not include a restaurant, but Old Soul would have a complementary menu with a brew-pub theme as part of their operation.

The listed applicant, Alex Larrabee, said he’d submitted the proposal to the city late last week. “We’re really excited,” Larrabee said, but added he couldn’t discuss the matter further when reached on September 22.

The application states the proponent is planning to meet with neighbours and Midtown Business Association. However, MBA executive director Emily Baime Michaels said midtown should find a way to be part of the current craft beer craze.

A website for the brewery suggests opening in the first quarter of 2016.

Brewery news USA, TN: New Heights Brewing to open in Nashville in the first quarter of 2016
It appears another craft-brewery will open soon in South Nashville. A building permit issued on September 22 shows $250,000 of rehab work to be done for a new tenant, New Heights Brewing, located at 928 Fifth Ave. S. A representative for the brewery could not immediately be reached, but an Instagram account for New Heights Brewing plans its opening as early as 2016, Nashville Business Journal reported on September 23.

The location would put New Heights Brewing in between an established craft beer district — the outer Gulch/SoBro — and the ever-growing Chestnut Hill/Wedgewood-Houston neighbourhoods of South Nashville, where at least two distilleries are opening, in addition to restaurants. New Heights Brewing would be the 16th craft brewery in Davidson County.

Considering Nashville had less than five craft breweries just four years ago, that growth rate may make it seem like the market is becoming over-saturated. However, Asheville, N.C. has one brewery for about every 15,000 residents, while Nashville's ratio skews closer to about one brewery for every 60,000 residents, when considering those that are currently open. Not to mention the thirsty tourists who are also filling Nashville's breweries.

According to Davidson County property records, 928 Fifth Ave. S. is a 7,500-square foot ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, SC: Salt Marsh Brewing on schedule to open in October
Salt Marsh Brewing and Fat Patties, housed in a combined building at 207 Bluffton Road in Bluffton, are on track to open at the end of October, according to owner Nick Borreggine, Island Packet reported on September 24.

Borreggine said it's been a long road to get the burger restaurant off the ground in Bluffton.

"We lost four locations and had a few bidding wars," Borreggine said.

Ultimately, though, Borreggine said he's happy with the location, especially because of the building's size. The restaurant occupies 4,300 square feet on the first floor. Salt Marsh Brewing is on the second floor, in addition to having an outdoor beer garden off the ground floor.

Speaking of, Borreggine said Salt Marsh Brewing is ready to start test brewing this week.

"We passed inspection this morning," he said on September 24.

The brewery will start with a selection of five beers, including a "State of Mind" saison, a pumpkin porter spiced with chili, a couple of pale ales and a honey hefeweizen. Eventually, Borreggine said, Salt Marsh’s brewer James Brown would like to offer 10 beers.

Brewery news UK: UK alcohol consumption down 19% since 2004, but number of brewers rises to 1,700 last year - report
UK alcohol consumption has dropped 19% since its 2004 peak and remained stable in 2014, according to the Annual Statistical Handbook from the British Beer & Pub Association (BBPA).

The UK is ranked 19th in EU per-capita alcohol consumption, according to the report.

In 2014/15, Government tax receipts from alcohol sales (made up of excise duties and VAT) reached a new high of GBP18.4 bln (US$28 bln), claimed the BBPA. Revenues from beer made up 34% of the total at GBP6.2 bln. The BBPA said there is still scope to cut beer duties in the country, outlining that the duty paid on each UK pint remains the second highest in the EU at GBP0.522, trailing Finland at GBP0.646.

"The duty rate in the UK is now an astonishing 14 times that in Europe’s largest beer market, Germany," said the BBPA.

The number of breweries in the country, meanwhile, has risen to 1,700 in 2014 from 500 in 2000. The BBPA also reported the first annual rise in UK beer sales since 2004, with sales up 1.3% in 2014.

Brigid Simmonds, chief executive, said: “It’s great to see beer putting in such a solid performance in 2014, while at the same time, the trends ...More info on site

Brewery news Angola: Chinese-Angolan brewery says its first beer is selling very well in Angola
Luanda Brewery Limited’s plant, with an investment of 180 million U.S. dollars from the Hong Kong-based China International Fund (CIF), started production in October 2014.

"The plant has a full annual production capacity of 100,000 kilolitres. With its fine quality and lower price, Bela beer sells very well in Angola," Buhe Bater, director general of the Luanda Brewery Limited, said, adding that introduced into market in March 2015, Bela makes a hit in shopping malls, hotels and restaurants in the capital city of Luanda and other provinces of Angola in recent months.

"We have established sale networks in all the 18 provinces of Angola," said Bater.

CIF, known in Angola for its major business as infrastructure construction, ventures into the manufacture sector in line with Angola's aspiration of diversifying its oil-dependent economy. Angolan President Jose Eduardo dos Santos said on many occasions that Angola welcomed foreign investment and advanced technologies to kick off the industrialization process, diversify the oil-dependent national economy, and to reduce the unemployment rate in the country which hovered at over 20 percent.

The plant, one of the largest enterprises in Angola, employed over 150 Angolans to work side by side with Chinese technicians.

"The Angolan workers are on the right ...More info on site

Brewery news Japan: Tax authorities dismiss Sapporo’s claim for return of 11.5 bln yen return in liquor tax
Japan’s tax authorities have dismissed an objection filed by Sapporo Breweries Ltd. calling for the return of ¥11.5 billion in liquor tax that the company paid on its Goku Zero beer-like beverage, The Japan Times reported on September 24.

Sapporo Breweries will decide its response after listening to opinions from outside experts, said officials at Sapporo Holdings Ltd., the parent of the Japanese beer-maker.

Within about one month, the group will decide whether to bring the dispute to the National Tax Tribunal, which could potentially take months to reach its conclusion.

Lawyers, certified public accountants and former tax officials serve as judges at the tribunal. Those dissatisfied with the rulings can file lawsuits against the judgments.

In June 2013, Sapporo Breweries launched Goku Zero as a third-segment beer-like alcoholic product free from purine and sugar. But it stopped production after tax authorities began investigating details of its production method to confirm the tax-related classification of the product in 2014.

After reviewing the production method, Sapporo Breweries relaunched the Goku Zero as a happoshu quasi-beer with low malt content, to which a higher tax rate than third-tier beverages is applied, and paid liquor tax of ¥11.5 billion as the difference in levies.

In January this year, however, ...More info on site

Barley news Ireland: Winter barley acreage set to increase again this year
Ireland’s winter barley acreage looks set to increase again in 2015, according to Teagasc crop agronomist John Pettit.

“Malting barley growers had to sow winter crops last year for the first time, simply to keep themselves compliant from a Greening perspective,” he was quoted as saying by AgriLand on September 23.

“And this trend is like to continue in the 2015/16 growing season. As a consequence, the tonnages of feed barley available in Ireland this year has increased.

“This is a direct consequence of winter barley crops being higher yielding than their spring counterparts. This trend has also been replicated throughout the rest of the EU.”

Pettit confirmed that six-row hybrid winter barley varieties are becoming more popular with Irish grain growers.

“They certainly outyield the more traditional two row varieties,” he said.

“But quality, up to a point, is compromised. We know from this year’s harvest that bushel weights for two row winter barleys were in the range 67 to 70: the comparable values for six rows were between 64 and 66.

“And these quality differences are significant.”

Pettit said that KWS Tower is a new winter barley variety worth looking out for this season.

“Small acreages were sown out last autumn. But the variety will be much ...More info on site

Brewery news Nepal: Government allows restaurants to run microbreweries
Nepal’s government has decided to issue permits for restaurants to operate microbreweries, allowing production of a maximum of 2,500 hectolitres of beer annually, The Himalayan Times reported on September 24.

A meeting of the Industrial Promotion Board (IPB), held recently, took a decision to allow operation of microbreweries in the country.

In a bid to categorise restaurants with microbreweries under tourism industry, the Board has also decided to recommend government to publish a notice in Nepal Gazette, as per Maheshwor Neupane, director general of the Department of Industry (DoI). Once the government publishes the notice in the Gazette, interested companies will be able to get a licence to run microbreweries.

Any restaurant with a seating capacity of at least 20 people can apply for the licence of a microbrewery. “A fee of Rs two lakh has been fixed for each licence,” said Neupane. He said that the microbreweries would be registered under DoI for operation after needful Initial Environmental Examination (IEE).

The meeting of the IPB has decided to request the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment to make the necessary provision to conduct IEE.

The Board, which is headed by Minister for Industry Mahesh Basnet, has also set criteria to establish the microbreweries.
