Brewery news USA: AB InBev to invest into its New York plant to allow for craft beer production
Anheuser-Busch InBev will invest $62 million to upgrade equipment and allow for craft beer production at its facility in Baldwinsville, New York, Auburn Citizen reported on October 1.

With the investment, the company will retain 443 jobs at the plant.

To aid Anheuser-Busch's efforts, Empire State Development has offered to provide $2 million in tax credits.

The announcement was made on September 30 by Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who visited Anheuser-Busch and sampled beer.

"This investment will keep hundreds of jobs and help Anheuser-Busch stay and grow right here in New York," Cuomo said. "Anheuser-Busch is a major driver of economic activity across this state and I am proud that this investment will set the stage for future growth in this key industry."

The company's 1.5 million-square foot facility produces more than 65 brands and has the capacity to ship 180 trucks a day.

Pete Kraemer, vice president of supply and the head brewmaster at Anheuser-Busch, said it's important for the company to retain jobs at the Baldwinsville brewery.

"Our employees all work hard to produce the great beers our customers demand and this demonstrates our commitment to the region," he said.

Brewery news USA, WI: Stillmank Brewing expands production capacity by 150 percent
Green Bay-based Stillmank Brewing Company expands production capacity by roughly 150% in its 13th month at their new production facility, Brewbound.com reported on October 1.

“We are a small family beer company that is excited to be a growing part of our community. We are filling kegs and cans to enjoy with our friends and neighbours, while making a large effort to source as many materials from Wisconsin companies as possible,” said Brewer and Owner - Brad Stillmank.

Stillmank Brewing Company is adding new fermenting and bright tanks manufactured by Quality Tank Solutions in Marshfield, Wisconsin. Stillmank Brewing has worked hard to be sure that his beer is not just available locally, but literally born in his community in as many ways as possible. The focus is on keeping it in Wisconsin. With the addition of the new capacity Stillmank Brewing is looking to expand their product line with a year round coffee porter known as “Perky Porter”. There will also be new seasonal beer offerings that will be tailored to, and revolve around the different sports seasons. “Tailgater” a blonde ale will be the first of these offerings to celebrate the 2015 football season.

Barley news USA & Canada: CHS Inc may be interested in Glencore’s Canadian grain handling assets only at discounted price
U.S. farm cooperative and grains trader CHS Inc would be interested in the Canadian grain handling assets of embattled commodities trader Glencore, but only if they came at a discounted price, CHS Chief Executive Carl Casale said in an exclusive interview to Reuters on September 30.

As part of a debt-reduction plan, Swiss-based Glencore has said it could sell a minority stake in its agricultural business, which includes assets from its 2012 purchase of Canada's largest grain handler Viterra. Analysts say all of Glencore's agricultural assets could be on the trading block.

While Casale said CHS isn't actively looking for such assets right now, CHS would "certainly take a look and see if there's an opportunity" to fill gaps in its Canadian portfolio if Glencore were to sell off its stake.

However, he said, "It also has to meet our return hurdles or we won't be a buyer."

A presence in one of the world's top spring wheat producers and major exporter of crops such as barley and canola has been high on the wish lists of multinational grain traders since the disbanding of the world's last major crop marketing monopoly in 2012.

Inver Grove Heights, Minnesota-based CHS has been actively bolstering its core agriculture ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NC: Sycamore Brewing purchases property in Charlotte with expansion plans in mind
Charlotte-based Sycamore Brewing has bought a real estate in Charlotte with an eye on future growth, Charlotte Business Journal reported on September 30.

Owners Justin and Sarah Brigham say buying the 1.6-acre lot at 2161 Hawkins Street in Charlotte was always a goal - they just didn’t expect it to happen so quickly.

Sycamore Brewing opened on November 1 last year.

“This is just something we’re doing with our eyes on the future,” Sarah Brigham says.

The Brighams declined to share a purchase price for the property. Real estate records had not been updated to show the sale that took place on September 30.

The couple says that acquisition will allow them to expand production capacity, as well as make changes to their taproom and beer garden to keep up with growth.

“We do have some expansion plans in mind,” Sarah Brigham says.

They’re working with an architect to map out their possibilities.

But the first year of operation has been a whirlwind for the couple. Sycamore Brewing tripled its tank capacity and now can produce upwards of 5,000 barrels a year.

“We’ve always wanted to grow organically and stay local,” Justin Brigham says. “We haven’t really set our sights outside of Charlotte.”

Brewery news USA, MA & OR: Craft Brew Alliance announces strategic partnership with Nantucket-Based Cisco Brewers
Craft Brew Alliance, Inc. (“CBA”), a leading craft brewing company which brews, brands, and markets some of the world’s most respected and best-loved American craft beers, on September 29 announced it has formed a strategic partnership with Cisco Brewers, the first and only craft brewery on Nantucket Island in Massachusetts, BeerAdvocate.com reported on September 29.

As part of the strategic partnership, the two companies are entering into a master distribution agreement and alternating proprietorship, in which Cisco Brewers will gain access to CBA’s extensive sales and distribution network and New Hampshire brewery to support Cisco Brewers’s growth, and bring more of their coveted island-inspired craft beers to more consumers throughout the North Coast.

Through the alternating proprietorship agreement, Cisco Brewers will not only leverage CBA’s state-of-the-art brewing facility in Portsmouth, N.H., but the two craft beer companies will also share a master brewer. CBA’s Lead Innovation Brewer Mark Valeriani will oversee production of Cisco Brewers’ beers at Cisco’s brewery in Nantucket, as well as CBA’s Portsmouth brewery, which is ideally located to support growing demand in the Northeast Coast for distinctive craft beers with local relevance.

“This new partnership is exciting to us for several reasons,” said Andy Thomas, chief executive officer, CBA. ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MD & OH: DuClaw Brewing’s beers will be distributed in Cintinnati beginning October 5
Baltimore-based DuClaw Brewing Company signed a partnership agreement to distribute its beers in Cincinnati, Cincinnati.com reported on September 30.

DuClaw Brewing Company beers will be distributed by Ohio Valley Wine & Beer to eight Greater Cincinnati counties beginning October 5. DuClaw Brewing, based in Baltimore and founded in 1996, will initially rollout with four beers-in 6-packs and draft-in the Greater Cincinnati market: Funk Blueberry Citrus Wheat Ale, Sweet Baby Jesus! Chocolate Peanut Butter Porter, Dirty Little Freak Coconut Caramel Brown Ale and Neon Gypsy IPA. Ohio Valley Wine & Beer’s distribution territory includes Adams, Brown, Butler, Clinton, Clermont, Hamilton, Highland and Warren counties.

DuClaw Brewing Co. began distribution in Northeast Ohio markets in May 2015. Their Sweet Baby Jesus! chocolate and peanut butter porter was pulled from Heinen’s Grocery Stores throughout Cleveland in June due to some customer complaints surrounding the beer’s name. DuClaw Brewing named the beer Sweet Baby Jesus! as a phrase evoking excitement and awe, in reaction to the remarkable chocolate and peanut butter flavour and taste of the beer and never intended it to be offensive.

“DuClaw Brewing Co.’s quality beer lineup evokes feeling, passion and emotion and we’re thrilled to partner with them in their rollout in Southwest ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MD & VA: Union Craft Brewing expands distribution to select Virginia counties beginning October
On October 1, Union Craft Brewing Company announced it will begin distribution to select Virginia counties beginning October 2015 through a partnership with Virginia Eagle Distributing Co. Union Craft beer will be available in Arlington, Fairfax, and Loudon counties beginning next week [October 5-11].

Brewery news USA, NC: Currahee Brewing Company to launch in Franklin by spring
For the last 15 years Brandon Hintz and his wife Jodi have been vacationing in Macon County and, after purchasing a place in Scaly Mountain a year and a half ago, decided to start a business there. With Hintz' experience as a brewer with Sweetwater Brewery in Georgia and after opening a successful brewpub (Hop Alley Brew Pub) in 2013 in Alpharetta, Ga., a business in craft beer seemed like the logical choice, Macon County News reported on October 1.

"Our brewpub in Georgia became a success and I had always wanted to expand into a production brewery at some point," said Hintz. "After discussing different locations we could go to, Franklin was the one spot we kept coming back to due to the proximity to our place on Scaly as well as the people there. Combine that with the love of craft beer that people have, coupled with the more attractive beer laws in North Carolina specifically, it was somewhat of a no brainer to open in Franklin."

Setting out to bring a production brewery, tap room and biergarten (beer garden) to Franklin, Hintz and his business partner, JT Schroeder, began searching for a commercial property in Franklin, and with the ...More info on site

Brewery news South Africa: South African shareholders of SABMiller to fight for continued Johannesburg stock market listing
South African shareholders of SABMiller are prepared to fight for a continued Johannesburg stock market listing if the brewer gets taken over by Anheuser-Busch InBev so they can benefit from the future growth of a new global drinks giant, Reuters Africa reported on October 1.

AB InBev, the world's largest brewer, said last month it had approached SABMiller, the number two, about a takeover that would create a group with a market value of around $275 billion.

Whether or not the merged entity will stay listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, as SABMiller is now, will be a key consideration for South African-based funds required to limit their exposure to international stocks.

SABMiller, with a market capitalisation of 1.3 trillion rand ($94.20 billion), is the largest company on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, accounting for 12 percent of its value. The company employs more than 24,000 people in Africa.

Its departure would be a major blow to the exchange, which has been hurt by a global commodities rout.

The chief executive of Public Investment Corp (PIC), a state-owned South African pension fund and SABMiller's fourth-largest shareholder, said on October 1 that SABMiller must remain listed on the Johannesburg exchange after any takeover.

"SAB is a very important ...More info on site

Brewery news Nigeria: Heineken’s Nigerian Breweries to sell 100 bln naira debt to boost liquidity
Nigerian Breweries Plc, the West African nation’s largest brewer, said it plans to sell 100 billion naira ($502 million) in debt to boost liquidity and support growth even as lower crude prices impact spending in the continent’s most populous country, Bloomberg reported on September 30.

The debt sale, expected by Oct. 8, will enable the company to diversify its funding and attract non-bank investors, Finance Director Mark Rutten said in an e-mailed statement.

The move demonstrates the Heineken N.V unit’s commitment to Nigeria, where it owns 11 breweries, Managing Director Nicolaas Vervelde said.

The fundraising comes as Nigeria suffers from lower crude prices, causing slower economic growth and declining government revenues. Lagos-based Nigerian Breweries reported lower first-half profit in July, while smaller competitor Guinness Nigeria Plc said earlier this month that the economic situation had hurt consumption of pricier beer brands.

Barley news Russia: Wheat export tax cut to level previously proposed by government
Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev has signed an order to cut a wheat export tax from October 1 to a level previously proposed by the government, a statement on the government's website showed on September 30.

Russian wheat exports have been constrained by the tax, which has prevented exporters from fully benefitting from the weaker rouble and a large grain crop.

"The accepted decision will allow to support Russia's exportable grain surplus, to secure the balance of the domestic agricultural market and the required profitability level of grain producers," the government said in the statement on www.government.ru.

The new duty formula is set at 50 percent of the customs price minus 6,500 roubles ($99) per ton but not less than 10 roubles per ton, it added.

These changes in the formula were earlier proposed by the government and were widely expected by market players to be approved.

The previous tax formula was set at 50 percent of the customs price minus 5,500 roubles per ton but not less than 50 roubles per ton.

The government statement said nothing about prices for the state restocking programme. The Agriculture Ministry has previously proposed raising them.

Brewery news Malawi: Carlsberg Malawi raises prices
Following the depreciation of kwacha in the country, Carlsberg Malawi Limited has raised the price of beverages, Malawi24 reported on October 1.

The increase is in both alcoholic and non-alcoholic products.

According to Carlsberg Malawi Marketing officials, the rise is between 12 percent to 18 percent.

The two litres Sobo Squash has jumped from Mk1, 200 to Mk1,500 while the 300ml Carlsberg Green has been raised from Mk 400 to Mk450.

Drinks like Fanta, Sprite and Coca-Cola are going at Mk200 from Mk 140.

Brewery news Zimbabwe: Delta Beverages reduces prices for its lagers to offset softening demand
Zimbabwe’s Delta Beverages has slashed prices for its lager beers by between five and 10 cents from October 1 to offset softening demand, New Zimbabwe reported.

“The price of the popular pint and quart packs has been reduced from $0.90 to $0.80 and $1.55 to $1.50, respectively.

“All other brands and pack prices remain unchanged,” the listed brewer said in a statement.

However, all other brands and pack prices remain unchanged.

The general manager for the Lager beer business unit, Munyaradzi Nyandoro said the cuts will improve affordability.

“It is our sincere hope that our consumers will be happy with the early cheer ahead of the festive season,” he said.

Delta, 38 percent owned by global brewing giant SABMiller, has been registering reduced sales in the past two years due to falling disposable incomes that are forcing drinkers to find alternatives to lagers.

The company reported a four percent decline in revenue to $576.6 million for the full year to March 2015 on depressed sales from both its sparkling drinks and larger beers.

Lager beer volumes were down 17 percent on prior year while soft drinks volumes, comprising both sparkling and alternative beverages, slumped six percent on prior year.

Sorghum beer sales were up eight percent on prior year ...More info on site
