More about the bitterness in dry hopped beers

ABSTRACT
The team of Prof. Shellhammer found out that the bitterness in dry hopped beers is influenced by the concentration of humulinones. They also determined the sensory bitterness of the humulinones to be 0.65 that of iso-alpha acids. Another US research team did further research on humulinones and found that hops and hop pellets (but not CO2 extracts) contain different concentrations of of this compound. Their formation post-kilning or post-pelleting is time, temperature and variety dependent. As the HSI of the hops correlates positively, an oxidative damage during kilning or storage for their formation is suggested. I am happy the iso-alpha acids are no longer responsible for bringing all the bitterness into the beer by their own...

Brewery news The Netherlands & USA: Heineken completes acquisition of Lagunitas Brewing Company
Heineken N.V. on October 15 announced that the transaction to acquire a 50 per cent shareholding in the Lagunitas Brewing Company had completed.

The closing of the transaction follows fulfilment of all conditions precedent as agreed on 8 September, when the intention to enter into a partnership with Lagunitas was announced, the Dutch brewing giant said.

Brewery news USA: AB InBev-SABMiller merger will hardly affect US beer distributors
The world's largest brewers — Anheuser-Busch InBev and SABMiller — announced earlier this week that they've agreed to merge, but the mega-deal likely won't have many impacts on the US beer distribution chain, South Bend Tribune reported on October 16.

Analysts who follow the beer industry assume the merged company will need to sell its interest in MillerCoors, a joint venture between SABMiller and Molson Coors Brewing, to satisfy federal regulators' antitrust concerns. AB InBev and SABMiller, combined, already control 70 percent of the U.S. beer market.

For that reason, local beer distributors aren't concerned about the merger affecting their businesses.

"We do not anticipate major changes locally at all," said Jon Leetz, president of Indiana Beverage, a Valparaiso company that distributes MillerCoors beers and other products.

"Because Anheuser-Busch is so big from an antitrust standpoint," Leetz said, "it is not likely that the Department of Justice would allow them to own SABMiller in the United States."

The $106 billion merger isn't really about the U.S. market anyway.

AB InBev's primary motivation for purchasing SABMiller is to gain access to beer drinkers in Africa, Latin America and other parts of the world. The merged company would control about a third of the global beer market.

Brewery news USA, WI: Octopi Brewing Co. aims to be the largest contract brewery in the Midwest
Octopi Brewing Co. wants to be the largest contract beer brewery in the Midwest, The Waunakee Tribune reported on October 15.

“It’s a project that’s taken a lot of time to develop,” said Isaac Showaki, owner of Octopi Brewing Co. in Waunakee.

“It was a $5 million investment, with half going to the building and half going for equipment. And we’re hiring as many local people as we can.”

A grand opening for Octopi is scheduled for Oct. 24.

On Oct. 8, Showaki addressed the Waunakee Rotary Club and talked about Octopi, before taking members on a tour of the 17,000-square-foot facility, which also houses a tasting room for about 70 people.

The tasting room will feature 14 draft lines, plus a cask beer served at room temperature.

Showaki said Octopi, located next to The Ice Pond in Waunakee’s industrial park, has the capacity to expand to 26,000 square feet later on.

While Octopi will make its own line of beers under the 3rd Sign name, contract brewing is a big part of the operation. Octopi will launch its own beer at the end of the month, according to Showaki.

Making every effort to produce quality beer, Octopi has installed a brand new, state-of-the-art brewhouse from Germany, as ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, IL: Lo Rez Brewing readying Pilsen brewery for next spring opening
The folks behind Lo Rez Brewing know exactly what they like: Belgian, malty beers. Unlike some trendier beers, these brews aren't overdosed with hops, and beer geeks will get a chance to it when Lo Rez opens its Pilsen, Illinois brewery this spring that includes a 1,500-square-foot tasting room and party patio, Eater Chicago reported on October 15.

Co-founders Dave Dahl and Kevin Lilly met in the late 1990s working together at a high-tech company called Neoglyphics. They started to hang out and tip back a few pints at Bucktown's venerable and now-shuttered Artful Dodger. Dahl and Lilly share a typical story of wanting to go pro after decades of homebrewing practice, but carry the hope that their brews will stand out. After working out the financials, Dahl worked a year at Metropolitan Brewing Co., while Lilly served a stint at 5 Rabbit. They also received various certifications that bolstered their beer knowledge.

"We learned theory, we balanced that with hands-on practice," Dahl wrote. "Our beers got better, we gravitated toward drinking and making Belgians."

The name "Lo Rez" comes from a simple goal. They're not trying to chase the next thing or reinvent the wheel. They just want to brew a few ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OH: Great Black Swamp Brewing Co. already open at new location
Even though the Great Black Swamp Brewing Co. has been in Toledo for a handful of years, there’s never been a place to get the craft brewery’s full line of beers, Toledo Blade reported on October 15.

That is, until now.

Business partners Andy Parish and Michelle Holtfreder recently purchased the Mucky Duck bar, 26611 N. Dixie Hwy. in Perrysburg, and reopened it as the GBS Brewing Co. on Oct. 1.

Parish and Holtfreder also have teamed up with Bob Morris, the brewer and proprietor of Great Black Swamp Brewing Co., to be the “brick-and-mortar aspect” of the brewery, according to Parish. The bar will serve Great Black Swamp’s five regular beers, as well as recurring seasonals, on draught.

Morris and Parish became friends more than a year ago. Soon after, Parish started homebrewing. When Morris learned of his interest, he asked Parish to assist during brew days. From there, Parish started distributed Great Black Swamp beer in the Columbus area.

The brewery hosted a few tap takeovers at the Mucky Duck this past summer, and the positive response from the bar’s clientele got them thinking about the next step.

“It just really came out of that,” Parish said. “We did ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, LA: Cajun Brewing opens in Lafayette
Cajun Brewing has just launched in Lafayette and become Louisiana’s 17th brewery and the city’s first, Bayou Buzz reported on October 14.

Other Acadiana-area breweries include Parish Brewing Company in Broussard and Bayou Teche Brewing in Arnaudville.

According to general manager Chad Lege, the idea for Cajun Brewery developed when owner/founder Zeke Bossley fell in love with brewing and became a member of Lafayette's Dead Yeast Society homebrew club.

Bossley met James Lutgring and Gene Nelson in the club, and all three served in leadership positions. The trio began building Lafayette's first brewery in 2010 when Bossley bought the building that later became the brewery's home.

Cajun Brewing became licensed in September and brewed the first commercial batch of Cajun Wit on its one-barrel pilot system last week.

Brewery news Brazil: Heineken closing its Manaus brewery
The mayor of Manaus, the capital of Brazil’s Amazonas state announced on his Facebook page on October 15 that Heineken intends to shut up its operations in the city, D24m.com reported.

The company does not see any more possibilities of investing into the site amid the current crisis, mayor Arthur Neto said. “I talked to Corporate Executive of Heineken Brazil Lucas Camara, but he said there wasn’t any perspective of keeping the brewery in Manaus running,” he said.

Heineken launched its Manaus site in July 2013. Its production was being shipped to the cities of Parintins (Amazonas), Boa Vista (Roraima), Santarem and Itaituba (Para), Porto Velho (Rondonia), and Rio Branco (Acre).

Brewery news South Africa: South Africa’s National Treasury says AB InBev-SABMiller merger should comply with conditions
The planned takeover of SABMiller by Anheuser-Busch InBev should comply with conditions imposed by South Africa on SABMiller when it relocated its head office to Britain in 1999, South Africa's National Treasury said on October 15.

SABMiller, which on October 13 agreed in principle to an offer worth more than $100 billion from its larger rival, traces its roots back to South Africa 120 years ago, when it began selling beer in the gold-prospecting fields around Johannesburg.

Before relocating its head office to London in 1999, South African exchange control authorities required SABMiller, like other companies such Old Mutual and Anglo American which made similar transitions, to prove its assets would not be affected by the move.

Other conditions include that all the South African operations and assets of the company will remain in South Africa, and that the company would match dividends paid to the foreign holding company with dividends paid to South African shareholders, in order to maintain balance-of-payments neutrality.

A senior treasury official said on October 13 the department was watching the merger for signs of any tax erosion.

The Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU), an alliance partner of the ruling African National Congress, said on October 14 it opposes ...More info on site

Brewery news Angola: Beer imports drop almost 65% in Q2 2015
Angola imported almost 65% less beer in the second quarter of this year as compared to the same period in 2015, Noticias ao Minuto reported on October 14.

Beer was one of the imported products most affected by the country’s economic troubles related to the falling crude oil prices.

In April-June 2014, the country imported 65,773 tonnes of beer, but during the respective period this year the volume declined to 23,280 tonnes.

The main volume of beer shipped to Angola comes from Portugal.

Brewery news Russia: Sports Ministry may remove ban on selling beer at sporting events
Russia's sports minister said that it is time to consider removing the ban on selling beer at sporting events, a news report said.

Lifting the ban on beer sales in stadiums during sporting events would increase revenues for event organizers and please spectators, Sports Minister Vitaly Mutko said, Interfax news agency reported on October 13.

"As of today, the restrictions have to a certain degree fulfilled their role, and I think we can now quite happily … think about returning beer to the stadiums," Mutko was quoted as saying.

Currently, there is a ban on beer sales during sporting events in Russia, with the exception of the 2018 FIFA World Cup, Mutko said, Interfax reported.
