Brewery news USA, MD: 7 Locks Brewing starts brewing beer
The latest brewery to set up in Montgomery County is now making beer, Bethesda reported on October 31.

Jim Beeman and Keith Beutel, the owners of 7 Locks Brewing in North Bethesda, MD, said on October 30 they officially started brewing beer at their Wilkins Avenue location after receiving the necessary permits and hope to open the taproom by mid-November.

The 15-barrel system at the Rockville warehouse location is capable of producing about 3,000 kegs per year, Beeman said.

The two owners, who met freshman year at the University of Maryland, brought in Thomas Hartman as the brewmaster. Hartman, who’s from Minnesota, trained at the Siebel Institute, a well-known brewing school in Chicago. He worked as a brewmaster for the past three years in Sweden before returning to the United States to take the position at 7 Locks.

Beeman, 32, said the company’s goal is to make balanced beers with malty flavors, although they’ll also have some hop-heavy brews as well.

Once the brewery opens, it will only sell beer through the taproom for the first two or three weeks, until the owners are confident the process is producing consistent beers. Once they reach that point, Beutel, 32, says the brewery will begin distributing beers ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CA: Firestone Walker Brewing Company to expand its brewery in Paso Robles
Firestone Walker Brewing Company is growing. The company announced on November 2 the planned expansion of its brew house in Paso Robles.

"We introduced the idea of expanding the brew house a couple years ago and this is the fulfilment of that dream," said Adam Firestone. "We have watched other notable California crafts develop strategies outside the state, but we remain committed to this community."

Added David Walker, "Eighty percent of our beer is consumed in California, which makes us perfectly located here on the Central Coast to meet demand, and demand continues to climb. It's satisfying to reinvest in this place. This is home."

The plan calls for an extension of the existing brew house along the western front of the brewery. The property footprint will not be increased. Walker says they hope to have the project complete some time in 2017.

"We upgraded our existing brew house in late 2012 and felt it might serve us efficiently for at least the next five to seven years," said Brew-master Matt Brynildson. "However, demand for our beers has been greater than expected, and we are now literally working around the clock to keep up. The new brew house will return us ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, PA: Funk Brewing Co. looks to open Elizabethtown brewpub by the second week of November
In just a few short weeks, Lancaster County, the top county in the commonwealth for brewery licenses, will add another craft beer maker to its tab, Central Penn Business Journal reported on October 30.

Lehigh County-based Funk Brewing Co. will open a brewpub and tasting room in leased spaced at the former Elizabethtown Hotel building at 28 S. Market St. The target is the second week of November.

"Downtown E-town is really cool. I feel it's on the verge of being really awesome," said Jon "Norm" Norman, vice president and partner in the brewery.

Norman, who runs the company with his brother-in-law, Kyle Funk, has lived in Elizabethtown for about seven years. He said he sees momentum building in the downtown with new businesses opening.

He also cited the presence of Moo-Duck Brewery and Cox Brewing Co. of Rheems. Adding a third local brewery should help make Elizabethtown more of a destination, he said.

"It's unfair to say we'll be like Lititz," he said, an example often cited by other regional communities looking to revitalize their downtowns. "A lot of things are moving. I think we're making a little hub here in E-town."

Funk got its start about two years ago. The Emmaus home is mostly ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CO: Oskar Blues invests in wastewater system treatment to be able to expand production
One of the stumbling blocks to a major expansion at Oskar Blues Brewery is about to be removed, BlueRidgeNow.com reported on November 2.

The Brevard beer producer is about two weeks away from launching phase one of a brand new, onsite wastewater treatment system that the company expects will take a significant load off the city's overburdened treatment facility.

The ability to treat more wastewater is essential to the company's growth as construction is underway on a new adjoining building in the complex on Mountain Industrial Road that will house several fermentation tanks even larger than the ones packed into the existing 30,000 square-foot warehouse.

The 17,000 square-foot addition will help bump Oskar Blues' annual capacity up to 210,000 barrels in the next two to three years, a number that would rank the Brevard brewery among the 15 largest craft breweries in the U.S.

“We're growing very, very fast,” said Noah Tuttle, general manager of the Oskar Blues Brevard plant.

Tuttle said Oskar Blues is investing $4 million for phases one and two of its new wastewater treatment facility. That includes a 9,000 square-foot expanded wastewater treatment system building and a pair of 24,000 gallon-capacity holding tanks for the brewery's liquid waste.

Brewery news World: AB InBev-SABMiller combination may have little impact on Diageo’s business
In September of this year, the talks of a major deal in the beer space came forward. Once again, world leader, Anheuser-Busch InBev, had set forth to bid for second in line, SABMiller. As per the latest update, AB InBev is offering £44 (or ~$67) per SABMiller share. In addition to this, they will be drafting separate conditions for SABMiller’s largest shareholders, Altria and BevCo, who collectively own 41% of the company. Although the deal is in its inchoate phases, a combination involving the world no.1 and no.2 in the beer space is bound to exert a major impact – not only on the merging entities, but even other players involved. One of these could be Diageo, who is the proud owner of beer brands such as Guinness and Kilkenny. However, in spite of the magnitude of this deal and the implications it could have for the beer industry at large, a number of factors suggest that Diageo’s business may just go unscathed by this move, Forbes reported on November 2.

One of the biggest factors that an AB InBev-SABMiller combination is bound to enjoy is synergies in terms of production, distribution, and marketing. Against these synergies, the combination could choose ...More info on site

Brewery news Belgium: Craft brewers not afraid of big multinationals
To understand why the world's biggest brewer, the Belgian giant AB InBev, is tying up with rival SABMiller look no further than a modest craft brewery tucked away in a working class Brussels district, NDTV reported on November 2.

Brasserie de la Senne was founded in 2003 and churns out only a fraction of the hundreds of beer brands owned by AB InBev, which is headquartered in the Flanders town of Louvain, 20 kilometres (14 miles) away.

People "eat, drink, consume local more and more. It's a major trend in Europe as well as in the US," said Brasserie de la Senne master brewer Bernard Leboucq.

Leboucq and partner Yvan de Baets are holding up a Belgian tradition that dates from the time of the Crusades. Fortunately for them, urban customers in the world's richest markets are seeking the quirkier, more home-grown libations like theirs.

"We are not scared of the big multinationals, the big brands, because it is the craft brewers like us who are eating away at their market share," said Bouckville, who employs a dozen workers that help him manufacture five distinct Belgian-style beers.

Artisan ales and lagers are a booming business in Belgium, where strong beer is one of the few ...More info on site

Brewery news South Korea: Korean beer exports up 14.9% in January - September
Exports of Korean beer are posting double-digit growth even as shipments of other products are steadily declining, The Chosun Ilbo reported on November 2.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, Korea exported 89,488 tons of beer to some 50 countries from January to September, up 14.9 percent compared to the same period last year.

"Korean beer exports used to cater only to Koreans living overseas, but these days the customer base is expanding to include other nationalities," an industry insider said.

The increased demand stems from efforts by breweries to increase or decrease alcohol content according to local tastes, a rise in popularity of Korean products in China thanks to Korean pop culture, and a preference for low-alcohol beer in Muslim countries.

Korean beer is most popular in Hong Kong, whose annual imports totaled 55,483 tons in 2014. The next biggest importers are China, Iraq, Singapore and the U.S.

Some countries actually prefer the weak flavor of Korean beer. Iraq imported US$5.4 million worth of Korean beer this year, up 116 percent compared to 2014.

A ministry official said, "Devout Muslims don’t drink alcohol, but people in Kurdistan in northern Iraq enjoy a light drink, which is ...More info on site

Brewery news World: Guinness to become vegan friendly next year
Guinness, the famous Irish stout, is to become vegan friendly for the first time in its 256-year history, as the company halts the use of fish bladders in its brewing filters, The Telegraph reported on November 2.

A spokesman for Guinness said it would begin using a new filtration plant that would be vegan-friendly, having previously used isinglass - a by-product of the fishing industry used to help yeast settle faster.

The new system is due to be installed sometime in 2016.

A Guinness spokesman said: "While isinglass is a very effective means of clarification and has been used for many years, we expect to stop using it as the new filtration asset is introduced."

Isinglass has been used since the 19th century and while large quantities of the agent are filtered out during the brewing process, there are still traces of fish bladders in the finished product.

The spokesman added: "We are conscious that its use may represent a barrier to consumption of our products to some. As part of our ongoing efforts to further improve the way we make our products, we are seeking alternatives to isinglass."

The news follows a longstanding campaign and several online petitions from beer-loving vegans, with many highlighting the ...More info on site

Brewery news Brazil: Ambev may be forced to close down breweries in Sao Paulo if state raises taxes on beer
Ambev will re-evaluate its production capacities in the state of Sao Paulo if the state’s government goes ahead with its plans on increasing the ICMS taxes on beer (Imposto Sobre Operações Relativas à Circulação de Mercadorias e Serviços de Transporte Interestadual de Intermunicipal e de Comunicações is a value-added tax on sales and services and applies to the movement of goods, transportation and communication services, and to the supplying of any goods), Ambev’s Finance Vice-President Nelson Jamel was quoted as saying by Globo on October 30.

“We are already going through a very challenging period with cost rises in many areas… If this [rise in taxes] is approved, it will certainly have impact on prices and sales volumes. Depending on the impact on the volumes, we surely can even be forced to shut down plants,” he said.

Sao Paulo governor Geraldo Alckmin is proposing to increase the tax on beer from the current 18% to 23%. If approved, this may lead to laying off 450 thousand employees within the industry and to closing of 85 thousand bars and restaurants in the state, the Brazilian Association of Bars and Restaurants said.

Brewery news Belgium: Climate change endangers production of Belgium’s famous spontaneously fermenting beers
A leading Belgian artisan brewer said he has been forced to temporarily halt production because of an unusually warm autumn, blaming climate change for night-time temperatures that are too warm to produce beer, The Telegraph reported on November 4.

The Cantillon craft brewery in Brussels traditionally allows its spontaneously fermenting sour lambic beers to cool in the open from the end of October, but this year after a brief start they have had to stop again.

“We had to pour away three brews for today, Thursday and next Monday because the night-time temperatures are currently at between 50-59F, which is far too warm,” boss Jean Van Roy told AFP news agency.

Like many breweries in Belgium, Cantillon, which produces around 400,000 bottles a year and receives 50,000 visitors, uses old-fashioned methods to produce its beers.

Lambic spontaneously ferments in wooden vats and produces a very sour, flat beer that later acts as the base for a fizzier Gueze that ferments further in bottles.

It is also used as the base for Kriek, the famed Belgian cherry beer.

Tradition dictates that the fermentation mixture must be left to cool “in the open air so that it is naturally infused with the wild yeasts present in the ...More info on site

Brewery news Mozambique: Cassava beer conquers Mozambique consumers
In Mozambique's bars and street stalls, the tipple of choice nowadays is a cold "Impala" - a beer made from cassava rather than barley that is fast capturing a valuable slice of the African market, Seychelles News Agency reported on November 1.

Cassava, also known as manioc or yuca, is a root vegetable grown across sub-Saharan Africa as a staple crop, and has long been used to make home-brewed beer.

But in 2011 Impala became the world's first commercially made cassava beer when it was launched by SABMiller through local subsidiary Cervejas de Mocambique (CDM).

"As long as it is ice cold, it is better," Dercio Machava told AFP at a backstreet stall on the outskirts of the capital Maputo, adding that its alcohol content of 6.5 percent was "a bit higher than other beers".

"My customers say it is good. Some days, it is the beer I sell the most," said stall-owner Dona Cecilia.

Described by its maker as a pale lager with a "rich body and taste", the beer started as an experiment to find a locally brewed product that avoided the need to import expensive barley malt.

Impala has now sold 100 million bottles since its launch - one small attraction for Anheuser-Busch ...More info on site
