About the richness of hard resins

ABSTRACT
So far hard resins are still considered to have no brewing value. And until recently we could only speculate what the exact components in hard resins are. In this extensive research project this German Research team has identified numerous components of the epsilon-fraction of hops, which is a part of the hard resins, by means of UV/vis, LC-TOF-MS, and 1D/2D-NMR studies as well as synthetic experiments and sensory guided fractionation. Besides a series of literature known xanthohumol derivatives, multifidol glucosides, flavon-3-on glycosides, and p-coumaric acid esters, a total of 11 bitter tastants are reported for the first time with threshold values of 5 - 198 mol/l. These compounds were shown to add to the total bitterness in beers. Furthermore using the epsilon-fraction as the sole hop addition, demonstrated the possibility to produce beverages strongly enriched with prenylated hop flavonoids.

Brewery news USA, IN: Port Wayne to welcome new brewery by the end of November
The growing beer scene in Port Wayne, northeast Indiana will soon be adding yet another brewery to its list with the upcoming opening of Trubble Brewing, 21Alive reported on November 6.

Recent studies show that for a city the size of Fort Wayne, beer consumers have been significantly under-served with locally-produced beer.

That's why Trubble owner Chad Hankee says he is excited to join the ranks of other local beer makers to get his home brews out of the garage and into the hands of local beer enthusiasts.

"As a home brewer, you're normally hanging out in the garage, friends are over and you're brewing beer, drinking beer," Hankee explains. "It's kind of the same, just now on a commercial level for everybody."

Despite the growing number of breweries popping up across the region, Hankee says he welcomes the company. In fact, according to him, a number of the breweries rely on each other rather than compete with each other.

"I look at it as more of a brotherhood. Blaine (Stucky) at Mad Anthony's has been a great person to go to when you have questions for when you're trying to open a brewery. But there's a certain amount of a brotherhood with other breweries. ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, BC: The Parkside Brewing preparing to launch in Port Moody
The third brewery to open along a short stretch of Murray Street in Port Moody, BC is just a couple of weeks old, but word has already started spreading about a fourth that will be setting up shop in the same neighbourhood next year, Canadian Beer News reported on November 6.

The Parkside Brewery is being founded by partners Vern Lambourne (former brewmaster at Granville Island Brewing) and Sam Payne (director of sales at Red Truck Beer).

Not many details are available at this time, but more is expected to be revealed in due course via the company’s Twitter feed.

Brewery news USA, CA: Laughing Monk Brewing postpones opening in Bayview till 2016
Laughing Monk Brewing is on track to open in the first quarter of 2016, likely mid-January. In August, Eater reported that the new pub and production brewery in the Bayview would be open in November, but a delay on the installation of a glycol system (a temperature-control mechanism for tanks) has pushed that, SFGate reported on November 6.

Laughing Monk is a collaboration between founder Andrew Casteel and head brewer Jeff Moakler, formerly a brewer for BJ’s in Arizona. Casteel describes the beer style as “a Belgium-California crossover.”

The name Laughing Monk is a nod to the brewery’s “traditional irreverence,” Casteel says. Their styles are indebted to the longstanding monastic brewing traditions in Europe, but their interpretation of the monk is “not that serious,” says Casteel. “He can break the rules a bit.”

Expect Belgian styles with a new world twist. A tea-infused saison, a blonde ale, a double saison, a pale ale and a coffee stout will all be in the lineup.

Brewery news USA, NM: Four friends working on opening new brewery in Albuquerque
Four friends with a shared love of home brewing have decided to go into business together.

The story behind Bow & Arrow Brewing Co. sounds like one we’ve heard at least a few times during Albuquerque’s recent wave of beer-trepreneurship, the Albuquerque Journal reported on November 6.

But it turns out that Bow & Arrow — one of about a dozen new breweries currently in the works around Albuquerque — boasts a particularly interesting cast of characters. Its founders include Mark Stone, a water resources engineer and University of New Mexico professor; Asako Stone, Central New Mexico Community College psychology professor; Missy Begay, a resident physician at UNM; and Shyla Sheppard, a Stanford graduate who previously worked in venture capital.

Bow & Arrow — now under construction inside an old warehouse near 6th Street and Interstate 40 — will reflect their shared appreciation of “culturally-inspired food and drink” but also their diverse backgrounds, Sheppard said.

“We all kind of bring a specific skill set to the table,” she said.

Mark Stone, for example, understands beer-making — and the science behind it — and will work closely with Luke Steadman, the head brewer the team recruited from Pennsylvania. Asako Stone will spearhead the planned craft beer ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, ON: Lost Craft Beer brews under contract, looks to open own production facility in Scarborough
BlogTO reports that a new brewing company has launched in Toronto, with a focus on selling its flagship brand at some of the city’s trendiest clubs and restaurants.

Lost Craft Beer has been founded by Shehan De Silva, who said the company’s Revivale – a Kölsch-style beer – is currently being brewed under contract at Cool Brewing while he works towards opening a physical location in Scarborough.

Lost Craft Revivale is currently available at several licensed establishments in Toronto including Lisa Marie, Taverna Mercatto, Nuit Social and E11even. A retail release in cans at the LCBO or Beer Store is planned for early 2016.

Brewery news USA, OH: Rivertown Brewery & Barrel House building second location
Cincinnati's Rivertown Brewery & Barrel House is constructing a second location to accommodate its rapid growth, Cincinnati Business Courier reported on November 6.

The brewery at 607 Shepherd Drive in Lockland is building a new facility in Monroe that will house the bulk of its brewing equipment, its bottling line, a taproom and a full-service restaurant.

"We're quickly outgrowing the facility, and while we originally thought we'd stay here long term, we're growing too fast to do that," said Chris Goodin, Rivertown's director of exceptional exbeerience.

Rivertown will break ground on the new facility in early spring 2016. The plan is to have the 31,000-square-foot facility open and operational by 2017. The new space will have the potential capacity to brew 150,000 barrels a year, but Goodin said the brewery expects to produce 40,000 in the first year at the new facility. Rivertown expects to brew 15,000 barrels this year, up from about 10,000 last year.

The new building will have a full-service restaurant. The current location serves food from Cleo's BBQ, but Goodin said the new spot will have its own kitchen and menu that is currently under development.

Rivertown will continue to lease and operate its current Lockland location, which will operate as ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MI: New brewery preparing to launch in Grand Rapids next summer
Would-be brewery owners Edwin Collazo and Dave Petroelje plan to leverage their individual skills to launch a new craft brewery in Grand Rapids, Michigan, MiBiz reported on November 6.

Collazo, a former financial adviser, and long-time brewer Petroelje plan to open City Built Brewing Company LLC next summer in a mixed-use building in the city’s burgeoning North Monroe neighborhood, just north of downtown.

The entrepreneurs hope to focus the microbrewery on unique beers using flavors such as lavender and sage, as well as stalwart styles such as IPAs.

To make the nearly $1 million brewery a reality, the owners say they relied heavily on the experiences of others, particularly when it came to fundraising.

Currently a brewer at Grandville’s Osgood Brewing LLC, Petroelje decided in the economic downturn that he wanted to start his own brewery, so he turned to his friend and neighbor Collazo for financial advice, which ultimately led to the partnership.

“When Dave mentioned that they had some issues raising capital in the past, I was fairly confident — based on my experience as an adviser — that I had access to people that had investable assets,” Collazo said, referring to his partners’ attempts to start a brewery. “One of the first ...More info on site

Brewery news New Zealand: Lower alcohol beer sales expected to keep growing
Lower alcohol beer sales are expected to reach record numbers this summer in New Zealand, thanks to changing consumer habits, tougher drink driving laws and new products, New Zealand Herald reported on November 8.

DB Breweries managing director Andy Routley said lower alcohol or light beer made up around 24 per cent of total beer sales in Australian supermarkets compared with around 5 per cent in New Zealand, however this had risen from just 1 per cent two years ago.

With a growing range of light beers available, Routley said the category would continue to grow.

"It's a very interesting development in how New Zealand consumes beer and it is definitely going to continue," Routley said.

"Whether it gets to the 23 or 24 per cent mark like in Australia remains to be seen - these things do take time but it is heading that way," he said.

Following the introduction of new legislation last December, which dropped the legal blood alcohol limit from 80mg to 50mg per millilitre of blood, light beer sales almost doubled.

It is now the second fastest growth category behind craft beer.

A recent survey by Hospitality New Zealand showed around 80 per cent of hospitality venues reported a drop in sales ...More info on site

Brewery news Brazil: Tax increase forces Ambev to close Rio Grande do Norte brewery
Brazil’s No. 1 beer maker Ambev announced on November 6 it will be closing its brewery in Natal, Rio Grande do Norte, Isto E Dinheiro reported.

According to the company, the decision was caused by a 29% increase in the local ICMS taxes on beer and an 18% increase in the ICMS taxes on soft drinks.

Imposto Sobre Operações Relativas à Circulação de Mercadorias e Serviços de Transporte Interestadual de Intermunicipal e de Comunicações is a value-added tax on sales and services and applies to the movement of goods, transportation and communication services, and to the supplying of any goods.

In an official release, Ambev said the operations will be shut up gradually by the end of this year. 300 jobs are expected to be lost at the plant and the closure will affect an estimated 15 thousand jobs in related industries.

Brewery news Zimbabwe: SABMiller’s Delta Corp. to cut costs after decline in six months volumes
SABMiller's Zimbabwean affiliate Delta Corp plans to cut costs and reduce the price of some products after reporting a decline in beer and soft drink sales, the company said on November 11.

Delta, which is 38 percent owned by SABMiller, reported lager beer volumes fell 2 percent in the six months to September while volumes of the cheaper sorghum beer and soft drinks declined 10 and 15 percent respectively.

SABMiller received a $100 billion-plus takeover offer from the world biggest brewer Anheuser-Busch InBev on November 11. AB InBev is hoping SABMiller will give it a foothold in growing African markets.

Delta, which has already cut the price of lager beer, plans to reduce the price of soft drinks after sales were hit by competition from cheaper imports and weaker demand, chief executive Pearson Govero said.

The company's total revenue for the period decreased 8 percent to $269 million. Profit fell to $36 million, down from $45 million last year.

Govero said power cuts, water shortages, higher taxes and a stronger dollar made it difficult for Delta to compete with imports from Zambia and South Africa.
