Less skunky with more hops

ABSTRACT
Sunstruck flavor is a widely known off-flavor in beer often described as skunky. It occurs when beer is exposed to sunlight during storage owing to photodecomposition of isohumulonein the presence of riboflavin. Polyphenols are known to be off-flavor inhibitors. Since hops are rich in polyphenols the aim of this study was to specify a suitable hop product and the process parameters to reduce the sunstruck flavor perception in beer. Because of the high total and single polyphenol content the tannin extract was selected for further trials. After exposure to light, the tasting results concluded that the higher the tannin extract level the lower the sunstruck perception.

Brewery news USA, MS: Mississippi brewers want to sell their beer on site
After touring the Lucky Town Brewery in Jackson, brewmaster Lucas Simmons can give you a sample of his pub ale or his Belgian style blonde ale, but forget about buying a six-pack from him. He’ll have to send you down the road, to a nearby store, Watchdog.org reported on November 24.

Craft brewers like Simmons are facing a serious challenge to their solvency, as Mississippi regulations that prohibit them from selling their beer at production facilities. Simmons, under the current laws, could apply for a license to sell wine at his brewery. But not beer.

“You get your 36 (free) ounces of beer with the tour and mosey on out,” Simmons said. “It’s extremely silly. It’s a giant revenue generator, and as much as people don’t want to think about it, if you saw the margins that we make on a product we have to sell through a distributor to the retailer, it’s tiny. It’s nothing.

“If we sell that same product on site, if someone wants to sit down and have a pint of beer, it’s a ton more revenue. At our levels right now, what we’re putting out right now, if we can sell just 5 percent of that on site, ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, BC: White Sails Brewing already open to public in Nanaimo
A new brewery with a name inspired by the sailboats often seen in the waters around Nanaimo is now open in that Vancouver Island city, Canadian Beer News reported on November 19.

White Sails Brewing was founded by Brad McCarthy and offers beer created by head brewer Tyler Papp, who has worked at several other breweries in the area, most recently Mt. Begbie Brewing.

Located at 125 Comox Road in Nanaimo, across from Maffeo Sutton Park, White Sails features a spacious taproom where visitors can sample a line-up of beers from the brewery, including Departure Bay Session Ale (4.6% abv, 25 IBU), Yellow Point Pale Ale (5.5% abv, 35 IBU) and Mount Benson IPA (7% abv, 60 IBU).

Brewery news USA, OR: Breakside Brewery opening its third brewery in Portland
Craft beer lovers can rejoice at yet another brewery opening in Portland, the Portland Tribune reported on November 23.

This time it's a third location for Breakside Brewery, set to open in Northwest Portland early next summer.

"We are really excited about this new project and to be a part of what’s developing in Northwest," says Breakside president Scott Lawrence. "This next evolution for Breakside will give us the opportunity to get even more creative and effective with our beers, and have a glittering premier location we can share with more friends in Portland."

The new 5,000-square-foot Breakside brewpub will produce new beers, since in the past two years the brewery has produced more than 100 different beers each year.

Breakside launched in Portland in 2010 in Northeast Portland's Woodlawn neighborhood. In 2013 they opened a 30bbl production facility and tasting room in Milwaukie.

Their beers have won multiple prestigious awards, including the Gold Medal in American-style IPA at the 2014 Great American Beer Festival, named Best Brewery in Oregon by Thrillist, Best Beer (IPA) by The Oregonian, Top 25 Beers of the Year by Draft Magazine, Top 100 by Men’s Journal and claimed multiple medals at the World Beer Cup, North American Beer Awards ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, NS: Battery Park brewpub coming to Dartmouth in December
Battery Park, a “beerbar & eatery” from the owners of Halifax brewery North Brewing and restaurant The Brooklyn Warehouse, will be opening next month across the harbour in Dartmouth, Canadian Beer News reported on November 23.

Set to feature a full service restaurant and bar, as well an on-site pilot brewing system and second retail location for North, Battery Park is set to open on December 10th in conjunction with Terra Madre Day, an “annual celebration of all things local and sustainable” created by Slow Food.

More details will be posted as available on the Battery Park website and associated social media links.

Brewery news Canada, AB: GP Brewing preparing to open in Grand Prairie
Prairies-focused beer blog On Beer reports that a new brewery is being prepped to open soon in the Northern Alberta city of Grand Prairie.

GP Brewing is being founded by Jason Petrone, owner of Maddhatters Pub in the city’s downtown. Located next door to the pub, the brewery will feature a 25 hectolitre brewhouse, a small tasting room, and retail sales of cans and growlers.

The flagship beer from the brewery will be a pale lager that Petrone describes as “a light drinking beer that will appeal to mass market because (craft beer) is a new thing for the Grande Prairie area.” Other beer styles being developed for future release include honey brown, stout, hefeweizen and IPA, and the brewery will also produce several exclusive house beers for Madhatters.

Brewing at GP is planned to start next month, with an aim to open and start selling product in February.

Brewery news USA, NY: A team of three teachers to open craft brewery in Marcy
Three teachers have decided to take on a part time hobby, they're going to be opening a brewery in Marcy, NY, WKTV reported. Keith Redhead, a social studies teacher in Oriskany, Nick Natishack, a physics teacher in Rome and A.J. Spado, an earth science teacher in Rome, have been friends for years and all have wanted to open up a brewery someday, and now their dream is coming true.

The three have leased a property that used to house a pizza shop on Trenton Rd. in Marcy and are very busy making renovations to the building to try to be ready for an early January opening of Woodland Hop Farm & Fermentation.

On November 22, four large stainless steel fermenters were delivered from California.

The three teachers plan to start brewing the week after Thanksgiving and their hope is to be able to serve their first craft beers in early January.

Whisky news India & China: Pernod Ricard expects India to overtake China as its second-largest market by sales shortly
Pernod Ricard SA, Europe's second-biggest distiller, expects India to overtake China as its second-largest market by sales shortly as it expects its operations in India to post double-digit growth over the next five to 10 years, Reuters reported citing top executives of the group.

India currently contributes 9 per cent to the group's total sales and is being seen as key growth driver.

"Because of the growth in the middle class and the size of the whisky market in India, we are confident we can keep posting double-digit growth," Pernod Ricard finance chief Gilles Bogaert told Reuters in an interview, adding “It's a fair assumption, based on the growth pattern, that India will soon overtake China from a sales standpoint."

Pernod Ricard, the owner of several brands including Chivas Regal whisky, Absolut vodka, Jameson whiskey and Martell cognac, is also looking to augment its imported brands portfolio in the country, said Guillaume Girard-Reydet, chief executive of its India business.

Meanwhile, the group is looking to launch new products and acquire some brands in its top two markets—the US and China—to perk up growth in these markets.

For the medium term, the group has set an annual sales growth target of 4-5 per cent ...More info on site

Brewery news South Africa: Competition Tribunal approves Diageo’s purchase of remaining 50% in Brandhouse Beverages
South Africa's Competition Tribunal has approved Diageo’s purchase of the 50 percent stake it did not already own in local firm Brandhouse Beverages from Heineken, iNVEZZ reported on November 26.

Earlier this year, Diageo and the Dutch brewer ended their distribution joint venture in South Africa, basing the decision on their belief that the respective businesses would fare better alone.

The two drinks companies said that they would call time on the partnership three years earlier than planned, underscoring divergent interests with the spirits and beer categories having performed very differently in recent years.

As part of the deal, Diageo agreed to sell its 25 percent equity stake in South Africa’s Sedibeng brewery to Namibia Breweries and its 15 percent equity stake in Namibia Breweries and 42.25 percent equity stake in Diageo Heineken Drinks, to Heineken. In return, Diageo agreed to acquire the remaining shares it does not already own in Brandhouse Beverages – the joint venture established in 2004 between the drinks giant, Heineken International and Namibia Breweries. The venture was established to sell Diageo’s spirit, RTD, cider and Guinness brands alongside the two other companies’ beer portfolio. On November 25, the Competition Tribunal approved the move on condition that it ...More info on site

Brewery news The Czech Republic & Vietnam: Czech beer becomes increasingly popular with consumers in Vietnam
Czech beer is becoming increasingly popular in Vietnam, and the Vietnamese show a growing demand for restaurants brewing beer under the supervision of Czech brewers, the daily Lidové noviny (LN) wrote on November 27.

Czech brewers have already built around 20 mini breweries in Vietnam, with an annual capacity of several thousand hectolitres each, LN notes.

“Unlike other Asian countries which prefer sweet beer, the Vietnamese drink the Czech type of beer a lot. … This is partly because a number of Vietnamese got used to the European style during their studies or work (in the Czech Republic) and want to have the same after they return home. The number of offers from Vietnam is increasing,” Jan Šuráň, the head of the Czech association of mini breweries, told the daily.

Josef Krýsl, a brewer from Plzeň, western Bohemia, built one brewery in Vietnam several years ago. Now he has received an offer to take part in a project entailing the construction of up to 30 mini breweries, according to LN.

The company LUKR of Krýsl’s brother Luboš and the company Pivo Praha were the first ones to launch the construction of restaurant mini breweries in Vietnam in 2001. They built and put into operation ...More info on site

Brewery news Thailand: Brewers and homebrewers slowly and surely changing the beer scene in Thailand
Koh Kret is a small island located about 20 kilometers north of Thailand's capital city in Nonthaburi province. It's where Wichit Saiklao - friends call him P'Chit - founded Chit Beer, his open-air, riverside microbrewery and the de facto home base of a growing resistance to long-standing laws prohibiting Thai people from brewing and distributing their own beer, CNN reported on November 27.

As outlined in the country's 1950 Liquors Act, those caught doing so face a nominal fine of 200 baht (about $5.50) for brewing, and another 5,000 baht ($140) and/or six months in jail for selling it.

Since launching Chit Beer in 2012, P'Chit has not only committed both acts openly - and paid 10,000 baht ($280) in fines following a minor sting operation - but also trained scores of aspiring homebrewers at his on-site Brewing Academy.

"We all know that brewing is illegal, and I know they can come any time they want and shut this down," says P'Chit.

"But at the same time I want change, and I think the only way we can create change is to create an army of brewers."

On weekdays P'Chit, an active colonel in the Royal Thai Army, manages two IT firms and teaches electrical ...More info on site

Brewery news New Zealand: Moa Group registers a smaller first-half loss
Moa Group confirmed a smaller first-half loss as increased sales volumes helped widen its gross margin, and as the unprofitable craft beer brewer slashed its spending on sales and marketing, The Scoop reported on November 27.

The loss narrowed to NZ$1.7 million, or 3.5 cents per share, in the six months ended Sept. 30, from a loss of NZ$3.2 million, or 9.5 cents, the Auckland-based company said in a statement. Revenue rose 32 percent to NZ$3.3 million on a 43 percent increase in the volume of beer sold to 978,000 litres, while gross margin widened to 29 percent from 20 percent a year earlier.

Total expenses dropped 30 percent to NZ$2.7 million, due largely to a 36 percent decline in Moa's spending on sales and marketing to NZ$1.1 million.

"The board is focused on ensuring bottom line performance continues to improve by increased sales, better margins and tight control of costs," the company said. "The focus markets for Moa remain New Zealand and Australia where our channel to market includes our own sales team."

The company overhauled its business strategy in late 2013, changing to a direct distribution model, shifting focus to the New Zealand and Australian markets, and outsourcing much of its beer ...More info on site

Brewery news India: Bihar chief minister bans alcohol in the state
Shares of liquor making companies were battered on November 26 after Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar said he was fulfilling his poll promise of banning alcohol in the state, The Economic Times reported.

Bihar, Kumar, said will formulate a plan of banning liquor in the state from April 1, 2016. Stock market analysts, however, were not much worried and feel there was nothing more than sentimental impact to the November 26th's fall in liquor stocks. Liquor stocks have witnessed a sharp rally in the past couple of months after announcement of global mergers and takeovers in the segment.

Diageo-controlled United Spirits, UP based Radico Khaitan and United Breweries were the stocks that fell the most as the news of Bihar banning alcohol broke on television channels. While not all companies give state wise break-up of revenues, analysts say less than 3% of United Spirits revenue came from the state.

"At such times, street tends to act more fearful and extrapolate things," said Rajat Rajgariah, head of research, at Mumbai based brokerage Motilal Oswal. "This is more of a sentiment dampener than a number dampener."

United Spirits fell Rs 159 or 4.74% to close at Rs 3,211. Before the news the stock had touched a ...More info on site
