MECHANICS OF DRY HOPPING

ABSTRACT
A crucial part when talking about dry hopping is handling parameters, e.g. how much do hop particles swell during dry hopping, and is particle size distribution of importance? Does temperature affect process parameters, etc? This German team looked into various parameters and found that different methods for stirring and mixing, as well as different contact times have only little effect in regards to particle size distribution, but they found that wet density increased with increasing temperatures and permeability decreases with increasing temperatures.

Brewery news USA, MA: Trillium Brewing Company unveils second facility in Canton
A small brewery in Fort Point now has a second, much larger, location south of the city. Trillium Brewing Company unveiled its new Canton facility on December 14, according to Boston Magazine, marking the completion of the brewery's planned expansion.

Within the Canton brewery's 16,000 square feet at 110 Shawmut Rd., Trillium has two tasting rooms and retail space, not to mention a drastically larger brewing space than the Fort Point location.

Founders JC and Esther Tetreault first opened Trillium in 2013, selling their farmhouse style beers in Fort Point and working off a 10-barrel system and a 30-barrel cellar. Up to this point, Trillium has produced around 2,500 barrels of beer per year. With the Canton facility in play, the brewery's capacity balloons to around 35,000 anticipated barrels.

In Canton, guests will be able to sample beers, chat with the team, and observe production in the open-concept space. The current beers available at the new space include: Sleeper Street IPA, Launch Beer Pale Ale, Pot & Kettle Oatmeal Porter, Pier American Wheat Ale, Trillium Farmhouse Ale, and a citra dry-hopped saison called Free Rise.

The Fort Point location will remain operational, according to Boston Magazine, as a sort of lab for the Tetreaults.

Brewery news USA, TX: Waco’s Bare Arms Brewing increasing beer output tenfold
Bare Arms Brewing is creating such a buzz in Waco that owner Keith Collier is increasing his beer production tenfold, having spent about $200,000 on new equipment that arrived last week at his brewpub and headquarters on LaSalle Avenue near Waco’s traffic circle, Waco Tribune-Herald reported on December 12.

“We’re getting into our brewery expansion, so we can do more distribution into Waco,” Collier said, taking a brief break from installing his new boil kettles, fermenters, hot liquor tank and brite tanks that will increase his capacity from 31 gallons to 310 gallons per batch.

“This has always been our business plan,” said Collier, who grew up in Houston, found a job in Waco and fell in love with the taste of crafted beer at Waco’s Dancing Bear Pub. “We wanted to just get the door open, get our recipes in place and then order additional equipment as we sought to get retailers interested in our product.”

He said demand is now such that a 31-gallon system is woefully inadequate if he truly wants to make a splash and quench the thirst of people sold on his brew.

“We just have not had much to give out,” Collier said. “With a one-barrel system, our ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MA: Castle Island Brewing officially open in Norwood
After more than four years of planning, capital raising, test-batching and building, Castle Island Brewing is officially open for business, Brewbound.com reported on December 11.

The Norwood, Massachusetts-based beer company on December 11 announced the launch of its first three beers: Candlepin, a hoppy session ale; Keeper, an American IPA; and TBD, a hoppy American Stout. All three beers are available to purchase, for the first time, as from Friday, Dec. 11.

“I’m really excited for folks in the Boston area to finally experience our beer,” said Adam Romanow, the founder of Castle Island Brewing. “We’ve been talking about – and working on — this project for a long time and, after years of sampling and soliciting feedback on our beer, it feels great to finally to share a finished product with New England drinkers.”

Castle Island Brewing was first born in 2011, at the time operating under the moniker “Critical Mass Brewing.” But when a California winery making a product by the same name issued a cease-and-desist, the company opted to rebrand. “We went back to the drawing board and ultimately decided that Castle Island Brewing would be the best representation of our brand and our vision,” said Romanow. “I live in ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, SC: The Blue Ridge Brewing Co. closing its doors in downtown Greenville
The Blue Ridge Brewing Co. will be closing its doors on North Main by the end of this year - 20 years after the brewpub staked out the first territory for craft beer in downtown Greenville, Greenville Online reported on December 15.

Blue Ridge had been poised to shut down its operations over the winter as it prepares to open a full-scale brewery in downtown Greer, owner Bob Hiller told The Greenville News on December 15.

The decision to close the longtime North Main Street location came sooner than later, Hiller said, when he couldn’t reach a lease agreement with the landlord. The disagreement was over the length of the lease, he said, not the cost of rent.

However, the departure won’t mean the end of Blue Ridge’s presence downtown, as Hiller said he is actively pursuing spaces in Greenville’s central business district to open a restaurant with the Blue Ridge name ─ though without the in-house brewing system that has been its hallmark.

“Yes, we are closing the doors in this building, but we’ll be opening a new set of doors downtown as soon as possible,” he said. “I’m pretty much aware of all the properties that might be available to us, and ...More info on site

Whisky news USA, IN: Indiana’s craft distilling industry just getting started
Nationally, the craft distilling industry is growing rapidly. In the state of Indiana, though, it’s just getting started, the Indianapolis Business Journal reported on December 12.

“It’s not like the microbrewery business, where it seems like there’s one opening every week,” said Stuart Hobson, owner of Heartland Distillers, which has operated a wholesale distillery out of a strip mall near East 96th Street and Hague Road since 2008.

“The distillery business is a little bit tougher nut to crack. When you make a product that sells for $30 or $40 a bottle, it’s not like buying a six pack of beer for 10 bucks. It’s a little harder to get people to fork over the money and try you.”

Until recently, craft distilling wasn’t just a tough nut—it was illegal. Entrepreneurs couldn’t open a distillery that sold retail to the public the same way a winery or microbrewery does. That changed in July 2013, when a new state law cleared the way for licensed artisan distillers to produce no more than 10,000 gallons of spirits (vodka, gin, whiskey, etc.) for sale by the drink, bottle or case from the location where the liquor was made.

The move allows Indiana to grab a piece of ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, GA: Second Self Beer Company expanding production in Atlanta
Second Self Beer Company is expanding its production output and facilities, including a new tasting room, Brewbound.com reported on December 14.

The Georgia craft brewery opened in Atlanta in fall 2014, and due to demand, its beer production has been at capacity since March 2015. Starting in early 2016, Second Self is adding new tanks and an adjacent space to the brewery in order to increase production.

Currently, Second Self offers two canned beers: Thai Wheat (a spicy American wheat beer) and Red Hop Rye (a hybrid red rye IPA). These flagship, year-round beers are available in 12-ounce cans at bars, restaurants, and retail shops throughout Georgia. With the expansion, Second Self will add new beers to its canned line, including Janus (a robust & hoppy double IPA), Mole Porter (a chocolate porter with chilies, cinnamon, cloves, & cocoa nibs), a traditional Gose with coriander, and more.

“After celebrating our one-year anniversary this fall, we’re thrilled to announce plans for expansion,” said Second Self’s Cofounder Jason Santamaria. “There have been times when Second Self has been hard to find, and it’s exciting that now more people can enjoy it!”

Barley news Canada: Japan’s Zen-Noh Grain Corp. and GrainCorp establish new grain joint venture in Canada
A major Japanese farm co-operative and the Australian owner of Canada Malting are staking a new joint claim in Canada’s Prairie grain handling sector, CountryGuide reported on December 14.

Tokyo-based Zen-Noh Grain Corp. (ZGC) and Sydney-based GrainCorp on December 14 announced plans to build new grain origination sites in Alberta and Saskatchewan, through a 50/50 Canadian-incorporated joint venture to be based in Calgary.

GrainCorp said the companies are now “actively looking” at sites in both provinces for what will be “a fully integrated supply chain for the origination, marketing, storage, handling, distribution and exporting of Canadian grain and oilseed.”

The joint venture, dubbed GrainsConnect Canada, is budgeted for C$120 million in its start-up phase, including construction and commissioning at its yet-to-be-chosen sites.

GrainCorp said it will put up C$30 million from its own cash and debt facilities for that phase; Australian media report that ZGC will put up another C$30 million. The joint venture will source the remaining C$60 million from financial institutions, GrainCorp said.

Pending due diligence on potential sites and the customary regulatory and planning approvals, construction is to be staged “progressively” from the latter half of fiscal 2016 through to the end of fiscal 2018, GrainCorp said.

GrainsConnect considers Alberta and Saskatchewan “attractive” ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MI & SC: Founders Brewing expands distribution to Southern Carolina

Barley news Argentina: New president announces large tax cuts on agricultural exports
Argentina's new pro-business president, Mauricio Macri, announced large tax cuts on agricultural exports on December 14, fulfilling a key campaign pledge but raising fears of grain and soybean gluts on world markets, Yahoo News UK reported.

Macri, who took office on December 10, had promised to slash the South American farming giant's steep taxes on agricultural exports, which triggered major protests by producers against former president Cristina Kirchner's administration.

Export taxes will be eliminated altogether for wheat, corn and sorghum, and for soybeans the tax will drop from 35 percent to 30 percent, Agriculture Minister Ricardo Buryaile told reporters.

Taxes on wheat and corn exports were previously 23 and 20 percent, respectively.

"I am going to sign the decree today," Macri said in a speech to farmers in the town of Pergamino, in the heart of the Argentine Pampas, the fertile plains that are the national breadbasket.

The taxes had been introduced in 2008 under Kirchner.

Protests over the steep rates paralyzed the agriculture sector that year and turned into a crisis for her government.

Farmers accused Kirchner of saddling the agricultural industry with an unfair share of the national tax burden, hurting their international competitiveness.

Macri vowed those days were over.

"Let's not think of things in terms ...More info on site

Brewery news Spain & India: Mahou SA eyeing potential launch of its San Miguel beer in India
Spanish beer giant Mahou SA is eying a potential launch of San Miguel beer to boost its presence in the Indian market. Mahou, which owns he trademark in Europe, has had early discussions with San Miguel Corporation (SMC) of Philippines in this regard, The Financial Times reported on December 16.

The Manila-based food and beverage giant holds the rights or San Miguel in India.

Mahou had acquired San Miguel Fabricas de Cerveza SA as part of a consolidation move to create the largest brewing group in Spain. Mahou entered India three years ago through a joint venture with Arian Breweries in Rajasthan, and later took full control of the company , making a significant step in its international expansion.

Mahou managing director Alberto Rodriguez Toquero said the company and SMC have discussed possibilities of working together to make San Miguel a bigger international brand. These discussions have covered possible cooperation in India, where Mahou operates its first international subsidiary, he added. "We may not make money in India for long, but we believe it's a great market for the next generation of Mahou shareholders," Toquero said.

Brewery news Taiwan & Vietnam: Gold Medal Taiwan Beer reportedly close to signing deal on opening brewery in Vietnam
Gold Medal Taiwan Beer, a century-old brand brewed by the state-owned Taiwan Tobacco & Liquor Corp., will open a brewery in Vietnam in the near future, a source familiar with the matter was quoted as saying by China Post on December 14.

After more than two years of market survey and assessment, the state-owned enterprise has decided to partner with Sapporo Vietnam Co. Ltd., a fully owned subsidiary of Japan's Sapporo International Inc., which will handle production of its beer in Vietnam, the source said.

The Taiwanese and Japanese companies are expected to sign a contract on December 17 at Taiwan Trade Center's representative office in Ho Chi Minh City, and R.O.C. Representative to Vietnam Huang Chih-peng will also be present, the source said.

Under the deal, Sapporo Vietnam will be responsible for production of Taiwan Beer in the southern province of Long An near Ho Chi Minh City, while a Vietnamese company will handle the marketing, according to the source.

This month Ethiopia’s beer market witnessed another milestone. Vasari, a UK-based asset management firm Duet Group (Duet) with 51% share in Dashen Brewery inaugurated a 2 million hectolitres beer production capacity per year plant, New Business Ethiopia reported on December 12.

At the inaugural of the country’s largest brewery plant in Debre Birhan city, 100km north east of Addis Ababa, Vasari announced its new investment of $150 million in Dashen Brewery. “We have brought the most advanced brewery in Africa – and one of the most advanced in the world – to Ethiopia. The new plant is expected to hire 500 permanent and 1,000 temporary workers. The new brewery followed the $156 million Walia Brewery’s plant with 1.5 million hectolitres of beer production capacity inaugurated a year ago by the Dutch’s multinational, Heineken.
