A HOLISTIC VIEW ON HOP AROMA IN BEER

ABSTRACT
A very comprehensive overview about hop aroma in hops and beer was given by Dr. Rettberg at the recent Microbrew Symposium in Nuremberg. Dr. Rettberg detailed what is known so far and supported by the analytic results of his team, starting with the aroma potential in hops itself and what is left of it in beer. What and how much is lost in the boil and what happens in the whirlpool. Also, the influence of yeast and the extraction time for dry hopping is controversily discussed.

Brewery news USA: AB InBev announces acquisition of Colorado-based Breckenridge Brewery
Anheuser Busch-InBev is on a craft beer bender, announcing a third acquisition in a five-day span that shows just how important the fast-growing category is to the world’s largest brewer, the Fortune reported on December 22.

On December 22, AB InBev said it agreed to buy Colorado-based Breckenridge Brewery, adding a seventh U.S. craft brewer to a portfolio that already includes Goose Island, Blue Point, and Elysian. AB InBev announced a deal with U.K.-based Camden Town Brewery on December 21 and scooped up Arizona’s Four Peaks Brewing on December 18.

The recent deals are meant to add faster-growing beers to AB InBev’s massive portfolio, which already includes Budweiser and Stella Artois. Because the craft brands are tiny in comparison, they won’t move AB InBev’s sales needle much – though the deals give the craft brewers vast distribution potential.

Breckenridge Brewery is one of the larger craft brands InBev has acquired. It ranked No. 50 on the Brewers Association’s 50 largest U.S. craft brewers in 2014, and sales are expected to reach about 70,000 barrels in 2015. With the deal with InBev, it will eventually be removed from that list – as only small, independent brewers can be included.

Breckenridge will continue to produce ...More info on site

Brewery news USA: Congress passes tax reforms benefiting small brewers and TTB expands and updates formula rule for breweries using spices and fruit in their beer
This week in Washington, DC, a couple of different things happened that help small breweries. First up, Congress passed tax reforms that will provide substantial benefits for small breweries. Next, the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax & Trade Bureau (TTB) expanded and updated the formula rule, which previously encumbered breweries that use stuff like spices and fruit in their beers, seattlepi.com reported on December 22.

Today, breweries file their federal taxes every two weeks. The reform allows them to do it quarterly. But that’s just the beginning. Below, the Brewers Association explains it in more details.

The tax extenders package for small beverage alcohol producers includes favorable reforms related to bond requirements and extended filing periods. The plan makes the tax cuts for equipment permanent, while also significantly raising the qualifying threshold. Additionally, the bill includes language that would keep any of the funds made available by this or any other act to be used to implement or enforce any provision of the FDA Food Safety Modernization Act.

“These filing and bonding requirements are an important victory for small and independent brewers, and we are thrilled that these provisions have been included in the tax extenders bill,” said Bob Pease, chief executive officer, Brewers ...More info on site

Brewery news USA: AB InBev set to acquire Arizona’s leading craft brewer Four Peaks Brewing
Anheuser-Busch InBev SA/NV is set to acquire Tempe, Arizona-based Four Peaks Brewing Co. in a move that underscores AB InBev's relentless efforts to strengthen its position in the booming craft beer segment, Nasdaq reported on December 21.

Founded in 1996, Four Peaks is Arizona's leading craft brewer. The company is expected to sell nearly 70,000 beer barrels in 2015. In fact, Four Peaks will continue brewing its beers, including its signature Scottish-style ale Kilt Lifter - the strongest contributor to the company's sales (60%) - even after it joins AB InBev.

This deal, which is anticipated to close in the first quarter of 2016, will mark AB InBev's sixth buyout in the craft and import brands business, since 2011. Consequently, Four Peaks will join AB InBev's superior brands including Goose Island, Blue Point, 10 Barrel, Elysian and Golden Road.

Notably, all craft brewers acquired by AB InBev so far have been based in different states. The addition of these brewers to AB InBev's kitty not only enhances the latter's business, but its solid distribution network also helps these craft brewers to expand their presence in the market. Industry observers expect Four Peaks to benefit in the same lines ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CO: New Belgium Brewing reportedly looking for a buyer
Reuters reported on December 18 that Colorado-based craft brewer New Belgium is looking for a buyer.

The story said New Belgium is looking for a deal that would value the company at more than $1 billion.

New Belgium did not deny the report.

When News 13 asked New Belgium about the report, Kim Jordan, New Belgium founder, gave the following statement: “New Belgium's Board of Directors has an obligation to have on-going dialogue with the capital markets with the goal of making sure that we remain strong as leaders in the craft brewing industry."

New Belgium says it's opening its Asheville brewery in February. This news soured the mood for local craft beer enthusiasts at Hi-Wire.

"I moved down from Ohio to Asheville for craft beer. I personally wouldn't drink their brand ever again," Ben Cooper said.

New Belgium announced the Asheville brewery will open in March for tours. Right now, they're making a test batch of brews. According to the U.S. Brewers' Association, New Belgium is the eigth largest overall American brewing company.

"We look forward to them coming here," David Gantt said, Buncombe County Commissioner Chairman.

New Belgium promised to invest $175 million and create 130 new jobs. ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, ON: Brick Brewing expands deal to make beverages under contract manufacturing arrangement
Brick Brewing says it has renewed and expanded a deal to make beverages under a contract manufacturing arrangement, the Waterloo Record reported on December 21.

The Kitchener-based beer maker said the contract includes a five-year term "with a significant minimum annual volume commitment and associated capital investments."

The company said it can't disclose the identity of the customer, but it said that after the first renewal year of the deal it expects volume under the agreement to represent more than 10 per cent of its total volume.

Brick makes Laker and Waterloo brand beers, and Seagram coolers, and produces President's Choice beer for Loblaws and Mott's Caesar for Canada Dry Mott's Inc.

Last week, it announced it has secured the Canadian rights to the LandShark and Margaritaville beer, cider and cooler brands.

Brewery news USA, OH: Gypsy Brewing completing renovation work on their contract brewing facility in Cleveland
Gypsy Brewing, a startup launched last year by Justin Carson and Paul Benner of Platform Beer Co., is now set to move into its permanent home. The partners are completing renovation work on a 10,000-square-foot portion of the former Leisy Brewing Co. on Cleveland’s West Side, where they’ll perform contract brewing for other small brewers and expand their own production, The Cleveland Business reported on December 20.

The new space will allow Platform to dramatically expand the amount of beer they’re making. Carson and Benner plan to brew up to 20,000 barrels here next year, a big jump from just 2,500 barrels in 2015. Gypsy’s contract brewing clients will include brewers that don’t have their own equipment and restaurants that want to create private label beers.

The partners behind Gypsy bought the long-vacant, 90,000-square-foot Leisy building last year for $125,000. Over the next five years, they plan to renovate more of the building and create 100 new jobs. The project will allow Platform the opportunity to expand while helping other brewers, too — a collaborative approach that has been at the heart of their business model from the start.

“How often do you see manufacturing jobs coming back to Cleveland?” Carson said. He ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CA: Bear Roots Brewing joins the ranks of Vista breweries
Bear Roots Brewing Co. officially joined the ranks of Vista breweries with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Friday, December 18. The one-barrel nanobrewery actually soft-opened through November, releasing a few batches of beer to share with friends and customers of its home-brew supply shop, San Diego Reader reported on December 18.

The shop has been running strong since September, hosting a Learn to Brew day in conjunction with the American Homebrewer's Association and North Coast Brew Club, and launching a quarterly homebrew contest. The winning recipe from each contest, chosen by a panel of certified local judges, will be served in Bear Roots' new tasting room for three months, with half the proceeds going to a charity of the homebrewer's choice.

The inaugural contest focused on the American IPA style, and with the grand opening Bear Roots owner Terry Little announced the winner was Sean Daniels, who beat a "really impressive" field of 32 entrants to see his IPA hit the taps this winter.

That will be alongside the initial Bear Roots lineup, which includes the Latham Red IPA with raspberry, Deep Rooted double IPA dry hopped with Amarillo, and Bite the Bulleit Belgian tripel made with bourbon soaked oak chips. There's also the ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, IN: Noble Order Brewing Company chooses Zionsville as its first expansion location
It’s been about 150 years since Boone County had a brewery, but that’s about to change, Current in Zionsville reported on December 21.

Noble Order Brewing Company has announced plans to open a new taproom in Zionsville by the end of January or early February at 98 S. Main St.

“We chose Zionsville for its aesthetics and overall vibe and feel. The town has an Americana/European village atmosphere that fits with our vision and direction,” stated Mike Miller, co-owner of Noble Order. “Our history with Sugarcreek Hops Farm and Sugar Creek Malt Company have laid the foundation of partnership with Boone County … to produce an all-Boone County beer year round is something that should excite the community as it does our brewery and our Boone County partners.”

Noble Order has crafted European-style beers from its Richmond-based facility since 2014. It partnered with J&J Winery to create the first location in Indiana to produce beer, wine, cider and mead all under one roof.

“The addition of Noble Order’s taproom is sure to make the iconic Zionsville Main Street even more attractive to visitors and guests,” Zionsville Mayor Jeff Papa said in a statement. “We are excited that Noble Order chose Zionsville as their first ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CO: Brues Alehouse Brewing opens in an old police station in Pueblo
The newest business in Pueblo is breathing life into an old police station. Brues Alehouse Brewing, at 120 Riverwalk Place, opened on December 18 on the Pueblo Riverwalk, KRDO reported.

"I always wanted to open up my own business. I didn't think it would be this soon," said CEO Tony Garcia, 25, who's opened the restaurant with financial help from his parents.

Garcia's love for brewing began when he was a student at Claremont McKenna College in California. His passion for craft brewing has now expanded into a business located on prime real estate in Pueblo. Six craft beers are already on tap, and more are in the works.

"This project has taken a long time and to think that we are here now," said Garcia, who graduated from Centennial High School.

What's most exciting to the staff at the Historic Arkansas Riverwalk of Pueblo (HARP) is the potential the business has to bring more visitors to the area.

"The more restaurants you have in one area, the better they all do because then people tend to gravitate and go there," said Jim Munch, executive director of HARP.

Munch expects the brewery will draw visitors from surrounding communities, in and near Colorado.

"Brew pubs are a big ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, WA: 7 Seas Brewing expanding and opening a second brewery in Tacoma
The city of Tacoma has a proud brewing tradition that fizzled in the 1970s as the beer industry consolidated, but Washington’s booming craft beer industry is now breathing life back into Tacoma’s historic Brewery District. 7 Seas Brewing of Gig Harbor announced on December 21 that it is expanding and opening a second brewery in the historic Heidelberg Brewery building, seattlepi.com reported.

The new location will span two city blocks in Tacoma’s historic Brewery District adjacent to the University of Washington campus. It’s not far from the Harmon Brewery and Eatery. The new facility allows 7 Seas Brewing to plan for the future, providing a location that will accommodate as much as a ten-fold increasing in brewing capacity. They intend to start brewing in the new location in the spring of 2016.

The 80,000 square foot facility will include a taproom and market, a large barrel-aging cellar, with additional space planned for a 60-barrel brew house and other brewery operations.

“This project represents everything we love about our company, our community, and brewing history,” said Mike Runion, co-owner of 7 Seas Brewing. “As brewers dedicated to crafting and keeping our beers local, we cannot think of a better place to expand operations besides ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OR: Great Notion Brewing to open its doors in Portland on the first day of the new year
James Dugan, Andy Miller, and Paul Reiter own Great Notion Brewing, and this summer, they took over the former The Mash Tun Brew Pub space in Portland to open their first brewpub. Now they're poised to officially open January, 1 2016, the Eater PDX reported on December 21.

The Great Notion taproom will serve food and drink, including cocktails and 12 guest taps, but its full line of beers won't kick off until March 5. Until then, you will find "limited samples" of its beers available, likely beginning with its flagship IPA.

When it comes to beer, Great Notion's brews aren't typical. Sure, it makes a stout with chocolate and coffee and hop-forward beers, but it's also aging sour beers in amphora coated with beeswax. Part of the Great Notion Amphora Project, the aging regiment adds a "unique honey-like character," according to the brewery.

Brewery news UK: AB InBev buys Camden Town Brewery in London
Anheuser-Busch InBev has agreed to buy Camden Town Brewery for an undisclosed price, the companies said on December 21, even as the world's biggest brewer seeks to sell rival London craft brewer Meantime Brewing.

The acquisition is expected to close by 7 January.

AB InBev, which is trying to buy its largest rival SABMiller, is in the process of selling three SAB brands to avoid regulatory scrutiny. The brands being sold are Peroni, Grolsch and Meantime.

With the Camden Town deal, AB InBev gets a European craft brewer that started full production in 2010. It has grown to a team of 95 and sold 12 million pints this year, with the beers sold in over 1,000 pubs and bars.

Camden Town’s owners essentially conceded that the deal made sense for the same reason many small craft brewers have decided to sell: an opportunity to increase distribution.

“We can’t do this on our own,” wrote founder Jasper Cuppaidge in a blog post. “That’s why I’m proud to say I’ve signed a deal with AB InBev.” The deal comes several months after Camden Town launched and completed a funding round via crowdfunding to help build a second brewery in London.

Brewery news Myanmar: Myanmar Beer adjusting to increasing competition on Myanmar beer market
Drinkers buying a beer at Yangon’s roadside bar shacks used to face a limited choice: more likely than not, they would order a mug of Myanmar Beer, sometimes with a shot of coarse whisky to give the light local brew an extra kick, Deal Street Asia reported on December 20.

These days there is more variety, thanks to the arrival of Denmark’s Carlsberg and its Dutch rival Heineken, which began brewing in Myanmar this year as economic reforms uncorked a market protected under military rule.

Now, Myanmar Brewery Limited (MBL), the military-linked producer of the old favorite Myanmar Beer and four other brands, faces stiff competition from global giants for a rapidly growing consumer market set to lift beer consumption from among Asia’s lowest.

Just months after opening, Heineken is doing so well it plans to double capacity at its Yangon facility to 50 million litres from 25 million litres, said Lester Tan, managing director at the APB Alliance Brewery Company which produces Heineken.

The company has accelerated an expansion plan it had expected to execute after three or four years, he said.

“Heineken volumes have just gone through the roof, it has taken us all by surprise,” Tan said.

Brewery news UK: British public increasingly favouring alcohol-free beer
A new study by AB InBev UK has found that the British public is increasingly favouring alcohol-free beer products, KamCity reported on December 18.

The study found that 31% of Brits have tried such drinks, with 10% of women enjoying it on a weekly basis and 18% of Londoners drinking it whenever they go out. Londoners were also found to be the most inclined to consume alcohol-free beer, compared to any other UK city.

Additionally, 21% of millennials said they are likely to choose alcohol-free beer in January, an increase of 10% on 2014. Across the UK, 19% of consumers are unable to taste the difference between alcohol and alcohol-free beer, which may go some way to explaining why - among those looking to moderate their alcohol intake in January - 34% will be looking to consume alcohol-free beer. This is an increase of 16% from 2014.

Daytime occasions and weekday evenings are key occasions for alcohol-free beer consumption, with 23% saying they were happy to take it to a festive gathering. For those who are celebrating this year, the most common reason to choose alcohol-free beer is being the designated driver (29%), or not wanting to drink too much and feel ...More info on site
