Brewery news USA: Mexican beer sales growth expected to continue in 2016 and beyond
Given its relatively minuscule share of the $100 billion U.S. beer market, the craft beer industry gets outsize attention. That’s because craft is growing fast and has fueled rapid merger and acquisition action over the past few years, Fortune reported on December 30.

Meanwhile, a different slice of the beer market is picking up more bar taps and retail shelf space. Mexican-produced beers like Corona, Tecate, and Dos Equis are notching consistent gains, with volume growth for those beers expected to continue in 2016 and beyond.

“They get stronger and stronger by the day, as importers like Constellation Brands and Heineken get savvier,” Harry Schuhmacher, editor and publisher of industry publication Beer Business Daily, told Fortune in an interview. Those companies are spending more on marketing to help propel the growth of their Mexican imports business, he adds.

Schuhmacher says that beers like Modelo Especial and Corona are easy to drink, much like many U.S.-made light lagers. But they don’t stir the same scorn that some beer drinkers have for domestic beers like Bud Light and Miller Lite. As so, they’ve been able to steal market share from competitors.

The proof is in the sales data. Corona and Model Especial producer Constellation Brands posted ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MI: Detroit’s Atwater Brewery toasts successful year 2015
Detroit’s Atwater Brewery, “Born in Detroit. Raised Everywhere.” rode Michigan’s brewery boom to another record sales year in 2015. The brewer’s revenue was up 25% versus a year ago (40% in Michigan), following a 68% increase in 2014. The company also added 11 employees in 2015 bringing its total employment to 44, TheFullPint.com reported on January 4.

“The beer business is extremely competitive but our brands have remained strong, especially our Dirty Blonde and Vanilla Java Porter that continue to be market leaders,” says Atwater owner Mark Rieth. “With 26 distinct flavors to offer, two award winning brewpubs and a third one in the works, Atwater is able to appeal to the whole spectrum of beer drinkers at our own locations as well as through our extensive Michigan and national distribution network.”

Although Michigan ranks as the eighth largest state by population, it is fifth in the nation in number of breweries, microbreweries and brew pubs. In addition to its top selling Dirty Blonde and Vanilla Java Porter, Atwater’s Decadent Dark Chocolate Ale added to its popularity with its “World Beer Cup” award in 2014.

Highlights of Atwater’s year include the brewer’s entrance into the Canadian market to add to the almost ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada: Popularity of flavoured beers surging and showing no signs of cresting
A couple years back, Forked River Brewing Company in London, Ont., decided to brew a seasonal, rhubarb-flavoured wheat beer for the summer, CBC.ca reported on December 31.

"We were flavouring it with locally cold-pressed rhubarb juice to give it a little sourness," said David Reed, Forked River's president and co-founder. "People get excited about that."

The initial 30-litre keg sold out in an afternoon. The next summer, they made 3,000 litres.

This year?

"Our production of that beer was [up] fivefold over last year," Reed said.

Forked River is riding the wave of popularity of flavoured beers that has been surging over recent months and shows no sign of cresting.

Overall, per capita beer consumption in Canada has been falling for years now, losing ground to wine as the popular drink of choice.

According to Statistics Canada, domestic beer sales in Canada totalled about C$7.7 billion in 2013, about the same as the three previous years.

Nationally brewed beers — or commercial beers produced by the biggest companies — have seen sales decline.

The exception has been local and regional beers, driven by what Agriculture and Agri Food Canada calls a "consumer thirst for variety [that] has fuelled the growth of new products."

"As a result, ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MN: Revelation Ale Works raising funds to open in Hallock by autumn
Residents of Hallock can already boast that their corner of northwest Minnesota is home to a distillery that distributes spirits across the country, but soon they'll have a brewery to call their own as well, Grand Forks Herald reported on January 2.

Four relatives are renovating an old service station along the city's main strip into a brewery they're calling Revelation Ale Works. They're raising funds and starting work on the roughly 75-year-old building with plans to open later this year.

The four owners—husband and wife Ryan and Lindsey Evenson, along with Ryan's brother, Josh, and his wife, Ashley—hope the project can help boost downtown Hallock, a city of roughly 950 residents that's about 70 miles north of Grand Forks.

"There are a lot of people in town who wanted to see this become a cafe or something like that; they didn't want to see it go," Lindsey Evenson said. "It's really kind of a local landmark kind of place."

Just outside Hallock is Far North Spirits, a distillery that began operating within the past few years. That business produces spirits from grains grown on its farm.

Lindsey Evenson pointed to the distillery, local hotels and a food cart operator as evidence of ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, PA: Benny’s Brewing Co. expanding after five successful years in business
After five successful years in business, Benny’s Brewing Co. of Nanticoke, Pennsylvania, is planning an expansion for the first quarter of 2016, Times Leader reported on January 2.

Owner Ben Schonfeld plans to have a 6,000-square-foot open view brewery and restaurant at 1429 Sans Souci Parkway.

“It’s going to be an experience,” Schonfeld said. “I don’t want people to come in, eat and leave. I want them to experience.”

In 2010, the Schonfelds expanded Marty’s Blue Room to make way for the brewery. Within the year, other venues, such as Dugan’s Pub in Luzerne and Lucky’s Sporthouse in Wilkes-Barre Township, had Benny’s on tap.

Schonfeld stressed the Sheatown staple, Marty’s Blue Room, isn’t going anywhere. “I wanted to go on my own,” he said.

The brewing equipment at Marty’s will be taken to the new facility, but “they (Marty’s Blue Room) will still have Benny’s on tap.”

Currently, Schonfeld’s flagship beers, consisting of Amber Lager, Pale Ale, Hopenstein and Wit, won’t change with the expansion and the rotating seasonal flavors will also stay. Benny’s Brewing Co. will add “one and done” batches in smaller barrels, with customers having input on the one and done brews.

The expansion of Benny’s will allow Schonfeld to keep up with local ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CO & NC: Ska Brewing decides to withdraw from North Carolina market
Ska Brewing, the Durango, CO brewery best known for their popular Modus Hoperandi IPA, is announcing their decision to withdraw from the North Carolina Market after 12 years, Brewbound reported on January 4.

“This is one of the longest relationships we’ve ever been in,” said Ska co-founder and president, Dave Thibodeau, adding, “they were our second market outside of Colorado—we will always care deeply about North Carolina.”

The decision comes as demand for Ska’s beers continues to climb closer to their Colorado backyard. Due to capacity constraints, some of Ska’s more popular new releases, such as Modus Mandarina, have yet to make the trip beyond Ska’s nearest borders.

“There are a lot of folks who have really been there for us over the years and we owe them a debt of gratitude,” said Thibodeau, “but there are also some amazing breweries in North Carolina so until we can make it back, it’s good to know there’s no shortage of terrific beers for them to choose from.”

Ska first started selling beer in North Carolina in 2003, when the brewery sponsored their head sales manager’s kayak team, Pyranha Kayaks, based out of Asheville. Eventually Ska signed with Tryon Distributing and has been distributed throughout the ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CA: Argonaut Brewing Co. now to be called Claimstake Brewing
Less than a week after ditching its former title, a brewery in Rancho Cordova, California, has chosen a new name.

The business once known as Argonaut Brewing Co. will now be called Claimstake Brewing. The transition to the new name, which will undergo a final legal review, is expected to begin immediately, Sacramento Business Journal reported on January 4.

Last week, the Rancho Cordova brewery announced it would change its name due to a trademark dispute. The owners didn't elaborate, but documents available online suggest Modesto's E. & J. Gallo Winery opposed the Argonaut name.

The brewery is expected to open at 11366 Monier Park Place early this year. Claimstake was one of three potential new names that the owners posted on Facebook last week, requesting public feedback. In a Facebook post announcing the new name, the owners said they based the final decision on a "functional, legal and personal perspective."

Brewery news USA, OR: Boardman’s Ordnance Brewing to increase output
Ordnance Brewing has begun expansion of its brewery located just off I-84 in Boardman, Oregon, Brewbound reported on January 4.

The expansion moves them from a 7 barrel system to a 4 vessel 50 barrel system raising annual production potential to more than 50,000 barrels annually. The increase in production sets the platform for expanding distribution and support of four core beers in six packs as well as a rotating set of limited edition brews in bottles by spring of 2016.

“We don’t expect to brew at capacity immediately, but it is nice to have the room for growth and an enhanced set of tools for our brewer. He’s been doing a stellar job with our current equipment but to strengthen consistency and availability we decided it was time to step up and prepare for continued growth,” noted brewery partner Craig Coleman.

The Ordnance team is finalizing their new packaging program with labels prepped for 22 oz bottles, 12 oz cans and 12 oz bottles. “We believe it is critical to be flexible and ready for what the market wants so we are taking the time to be as well prepared as we can,” noted Mr. Coleman.

Initial plans are to launch with ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CA & TX: Knee Deep Brewing to start selling its beers in Texas
Knee Deep Brewing Company of Auburn, CA. is licensed and will be selling beers in the state of Texas starting January 2016, Brewbound reported on December 31.

“We are pleased to announce that Knee Deep beers will now be distributed in Texas as a result of our recently signed agreement with Austin Specialty Beverage. The addition of Austin Specialty to our distribution network will make our beers available throughout Austin, as well as Houston and Dallas in late 2016,” said Andrew Moore, Sales Manager of Knee Deep.

“Austin Specialty Beverage is highly regarded and we are more than excited to launch with them in the state,” said Moore.

“We are proud to be bringing Knee Deep’s big, kick-ass beers into the Austin Specialty portfolio,” said Sean O’Connor of Austin Specialty. “We look forward to sharing a new one with our Texas customers each week for the first 12 weeks of the year. We know Texans love big & bold IPA’s and are dying to get their hands on this beer.”

Knee Deep Brewing Company began brewing in 2010, moved to their current brewery in Auburn in late 2013 and brewed the first Auburn beer in January 2014. Knee Deep continues to grow its distribution ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, IA: Worth Brewing Co. to move to a bigger location by next month
Worth Brewing Co. in Northwood, IA, might be one of the smallest nanobreweries in the Midwest, but it might not hold that title much longer. The company is renovating an old building into its new facility that is right across the street from its current location, Albert Lea Tribune reported on December 31.

The extra space will allow for many changes for the brewery.

Retail Manager Tyler Trenhaile said the company will move from a half-barrel system, which he called inefficient, to a seven-barrel system.

“It’s a lot more work to get a lot less product,” Trenhaile said of the half-barrel system.

The system will allow the business to expand its distribution market, as well.

“We’ll also be able to start distributing beer, first through kegs and eventually through bottles,” he said, estimating it may take six months to a year to get to that stage.

Expanding doesn’t only apply to the production line. Many changes will be seen at the new facility.

Currently, Worth Brewing Co. has five beers served year-round. These beers are referred to as the company’s flagship beers. The company also has two rotating taps for specialty beers and a guest tap.

Trenhaile said the menu may slightly change with the move.

It may have ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, WY: Melvin Brewing officially launches new production facility
Melvin Brewing has officially launched production of its award-winning beers at their new 20,000-square-foot facility on six acres in Alpine, Wyoming, Brewbound reported on December 30.

Initial production of Melvin Brewing began quietly on December 13th in Alpine and includes Clinic ISA, Melvin IPA, 2×4 DIPA and Hubert MPA (a Melvin Pale Ale, or what some other breweries would call an IPA). This January, Melvin Brewing will expand distribution to Colorado, Washington and Idaho.

The production facility, located some 35 miles from Jackson, Wyoming plans to open a tasting room, host tours and events in the summer of 2016.

Brewery news UK: Molson Coors completes distribution takeover of Staropramen beer from Carlsberg
The UK division of Molson Coors has completed the distribution takeover of its Staropramen brand in the country from Carlsberg.

The move, which was initially announced in June, is a result of the early termination of Staropramen's distribution arrangement between the two brewers. Carlsberg had handled the lager in the UK since 2011, a spokesperson for Molson Coors confirmed on January 5.

According to the MD of Molson Coors UK & Ireland, Frederic Landtmeters, the brand's arrival represents a "significant and exciting milestone" for the unit.

Staropramen joins Grolsch, Cobra and Singha in the unit's 'world beer' portfolio.

Molson Coors acquired the former owner of Staropramen, StarBev, in 2012.

Brewery news Indonesia: Alcoholic beverages producers working on curtailing declines after ban of sales in minimarkets and kiosks
When the government of Indonesia banned the sale of alcoholic beverages in minimarkets and kiosks in early 2015 in an effort to “protect the morals and culture of Indonesian society”, it came as a shock to alcoholic beverage producers. Although alcoholic drinks are still allowed to be sold in the larger supermarkets, restaurants, cafes and hotels, sales of beer plunged as the beverage was banned in the (estimated) 70,000 minimarkets that have become a very popular shopping place in the urban areas of Indonesia, Indonesia-Investments reported on January 5.

In this new context, local alcoholic beverage producers need to alter their strategy in order to boost sales or, at least, curtail the decline. London-based Diageo plc, a British multinational alcoholic beverages firm, introduced alcohol-free Guinness to Indonesia (and the company is planning to construct a factory on the island of Bali).
