Brewery news USA: Number of breweries forecast to keep increasing this year
Being small is not always a disadvantage — especially when your taste has people looking for more, Metro.us reported on January 16. In just the last couple of years, the US have seen an increase in craft breweries with brewers looking to add a new twist to the beer industry. As of June of last year, 3,739 craft breweries were operating in the United States, an increase of 699 from the previous year, according to a report by the Brewers Association, the nonprofit trade association dedicated to small and independent American craft brewers. According to Greg Avola, co-founder of the social app Untappd — which allows users to share beers, beer-drinking establishments and beer feedback — this increase will only continue. Since launching Untappd together with partner Tim Mather, Avola said the app has garnered a total of 3 million users and through user interaction has been able to notice trends in the industry. “Every part of the country has a unique twist to making beers,” Avola said. “That flexibility will allow other craft breweries to say they want to start even if there are already a lot of them out there.” The New York City resident added that what ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NC: Oskar Blues Brewery projecting more explosive growth this year
Following another year of explosive growth in 2015, officials for Oskar Blues Brewery are projecting more of the same for 2016, BizWest reported on January 19.

Longmont-based Oskar Blues announced on January 19 that overall production grew to 192,000 barrels in 2015, up 29 percent from 2014’s mark of 149,000. This year, the brewery, which pioneered the practice of putting craft beer into cans, is targeting 244,000 barrels. That mark would be double the company’s 119,000 barrels in 2013.

The growth and projections are due to a variety of factors, including a quick ramp-up at the company’s three-year-old brewery in Brevard, N.C. The company’s Longmont brewery, responsible for a distribution area roughly defined as west of the Mississippi River, churned out 102,000 barrels in 2015, but Brevard wasn’t far behind at 90,000.

“I think the growth that we’ve experienced by having a brewery on the East Coast has certainly benefitted us,” Oskar Blues spokesman Chad Melis said. “We’ve been able to ship fresher beer up and down the East Coast, and that makes the beer taste better.”

Growth this year will be buoyed in part by the April opening of a production brewery in Austin, Texas, which is projected to produce 10,000 barrels in ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MI: Founders Brewing once again expanding in Grand Rapids
Founders Brewing Company announced on January 19 it is once again expanding.

The beer giant will be adding a new facility at 900 Hynes Avenue SW, just outside of downtown Grand Rapids in the Union Station building.

Founders current location at 235 Grandville Ave. SW has grown significantly over the years to now take up an entire city block.

According to a news release from Founders, the new facility is intended to fulfil their growing warehouse and distribution needs.

The company said the new location will also house its second brewery which will focus exclusively on the barrel-aged, experimental, high-gravity and specialty beers.

“This is the foundation of our company and what we are known for. It represents the very essence of Founders and it feels great to know that the very roots of our success will always have a primary focus,” said co-founder Mike Stevens in the news release.

The new location will not have a tap room and will be for beer production only.

Founders anticipates beginning operations at the new facility on Jan. 29, 2016 with production starting this summer.

Barley news USA, MT: AB InBev’s takeover of SABMiller won’t hurt Montana barley growers – company official
Anheuser-Busch InBev's takeover of competitor SABMiller won't hurt Montana wheat and barley producers who sell a lot of their crops for beer production, a company official was quoted as saying by Great Falls Tribune on January 19.

Anheuser-Busch InBev announced last fall it would buy SABMiller for about $108 billion in a merger that would combine the world’s two largest brewing companies, with operations around the world. If the deal is approved, the companies would control about 30 percent of the global beer market, with brands including Corona, Beck’s, and Stella Artois.

Russ Harville, senior director of raw materials with Anheuser-Busch, said the acquisition of SABMiller “will have no effect on our grain contracts with Montana growers.”

Due to a large divestiture here in the United States by SABMiller to Molson Coors, he said the merger will not change Anheuser-Busch’s footprint in the U.S. beer market or its procurement of barley, wheat or any other ingredient used to brew its beers.

The response followed a letter sent on January 19 to Carlos Brito, the chief executive of Anheuser-Busch InBev, by Sen. Jon Tester, D-Mont., who said his constituents need to better understand how the proposed acquisition would affect their longstanding relationship with the brewer ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, MB: Manitoba government sets aside C$5 mln for incentive loan program to help craft brewers and distillers
The Manitoba government has set aside C$5 million as part of an incentive loan program to further spark the growth and development of the province’s craft brewing and distilling industry, chrisd.ca reported on January 18.

Loans of up to C$250,000 will be issued for producers to purchase equipment to start their businesses, or towards the expansion of existing production.

“The capital investment required to open or expand a craft brewery is extremely high,” said Nicole Barry, owner of PEG Beer Co. “By having another source of funds to access, it provides some welcome breathing room.”

Loans must be paid back over a five-year period and will be issued to Manitoba-based businesses. Applications will begin being accepted in late spring or early summer of this year.

“The introduction of this loan program is one more way in which we can help this exciting industry to thrive, which will in turn resonate throughout the province, creating benefits to Manitoba’s economy, agri-producers, hospitality and tourism industries,” added Ron Lemieux, minister responsible for Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries.

Brewery news USA, AK: Craft breweries popping up across Alaska
If making a beer from scratch weren’t so difficult at times, it wouldn’t be worth it to Jake Wade. It can’t be just any beer. It must be a draft beer that develops a loyal following with a taste — light or heavy — that lasts long after the glass is empty.

“You’re making a product from raw materials,” he said in an interview to Alaska Dispatch News on January 17. “That’s what I like about it. I feel like I’m at the core of something good, something that people will enjoy. It takes energy, but the important thing is, it takes patience.”

Patience helped drive Wade and his three older brothers’ willingness to wait three years before pulling taps for the first time last month at Bearpaw River Brewing Co. in Wasilla, pouring either an IPA, a stout or a Belgian beer.

When that happened, Bearpaw became the fifth Alaska craft brewery to open in 2015, a year that also saw several significant expansions at established facilities, helping drive what may have been the industry’s strongest year since Juneau’s Alaskan Brewing Co. ignited the state’s craft brewing industry 30 years ago. Since that fateful December 1986 day, more than two dozen Alaska ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, VA: Blue & Gray Brewing Co. sold to Adventure Brewing Co. in Stafford County
The Fredericksburg area’s first craft brewery has a new owner.

Blue & Gray Brewing Co. in Spotsylvania County has been sold to Adventure Brewing Co. in Stafford County, Fredericksburg.com reported on January 15.

Blue and Gray opened in 2002 and is the oldest craft brewery in the Fredericksburg region.

“After 15 years of brewing, I’m ready to move on and do something different,” said Blue and Gray’s founder, Jeff Fitzpatrick. "I’ve enjoyed the last 15 years. It’s been fun being part of the brewery and setting up the base.”

Fitzpatrick blazed a trail for craft beer in the Fredericksburg region, which now has eight microbreweries.

“I think I’ve achieved what I set out to do: Establish a solid local brewery here in Fredericksburg,” he said.

The changes at Blue and Gray won’t be immediate because of federal and state licensing laws.

After the transition, some of Blue & Gray’s most popular beers — Fred Red, Stonewall Stout and some imperial stouts and barrel-aged beers — will still be made by Adventure.

Adventure Brewing opened in May 2014 and is run by Tim Bornholtz, Stan Johnson and John Viarella — three Stafford County residents who started as homebrewers.

Blue & Gray’s facility at the Bowman Center will become Adventure’s production ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, BC: Macaloney Brewers & Distillers now has a home
Greater Victoria’s latest distiller now has a home, Times Colonist reported on January 19.

Victoria Caledonian Distillery and Brewery, which will produce both beer and whisky, will be housed at 761 Enterprise Cres., a 17,000-square-foot space that expects to be up and running and open to the public by June.

Graeme Macaloney, founder of Macaloney Brewers & Distillers, said equipment from as far away as Scotland is en route and should be installed within the next two months.

“I’m fairly confident that by June everything will be complete. Beer will be flowing and whisky will be getting put into barrels for maturation and our tourism component will be open by then as well,” he said.

When it opens, the facility will also house a gift store for whisky, beer and related gifts, and space to host corporate, family or community events.

The tourism component is a big part of the operation, with the distillery planning to run hands-on experiential tours and tutored tastings to show people the entire whisky making process.

Macaloney said the location, overlooking the Pat Bay Highway, puts them on solid footing to lure tourism traffic.

For true whisky lovers, the distillery will also be offering individually crafted whiskies.

“We are already starting to offer ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NY: The Empire Brewing Company close to making beer at its new Farmstead Brewery in Cazenovia
The Empire Brewing Company is getting very close to making beer at its new Farmstead Brewery in Cazenovia, WSYR reported on January 19.

Internationally known tank maker Feldmeier, based in Syracuse is this week delivering the vessels Empire will use for its beer making process.

Ben Brotman, the head brewer for the Empire Farmstead Brewery, tells NewsChannel 9, "It’s very exciting. It seems like this is really happening and we're going to be making beer soon and that's what we want to do."

Also being delivered is bottling equipment.

Tim Butler, Empire’s Director of Brewing Operations, says, "We've never had the opportunity to bottle our beer before, for a long time it was only available at the brew pub, we are now doing some distribution in draft only but the opportunity to get our beer into bottles and get it in bigger stores and chain stores and convenience stores that's really going to be a huge stepping stone for us."

The entire brew house will contain the bottler and 19 vessels or tanks which would make it about 10 times the size of Empire’s small brewery in Armory Square in Syracuse.

"Some of the processes could change with a larger scale but overall it's the ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OH: Columbus getting another craft brewery – Commonhouse Ales
Columbus is getting another craft brewery, but this one is a little different, Columbus Dispatch reported on January 19.

Lenny Kolada, the owner of Smokehouse Brewing Co., is leasing Columbus Brewing Co.'s old space and equipment at 535 Short St. and opening a new production brewery, Commonhouse Ales. The new company will be a B-Corp, a for-profit company certified by the non-profit B Lab for social responsibility and other criteria.

Kolada started a community fund, Commonhouse Shares, with the Columbus Foundation that will receive $1 from the sale of every six-pack of the new brewery's flagship beer, Columbus Common.

"Now is the time to take craft beer to the next level," Kolada said in a statement. "Beer is good, but want to use beer for good."

The new brewery will distribute its beers throughout central Ohio beginning at the end of April. Commonhouse Ales will be a separate operation from Smokehouse Brewery, but some of the beers from Smokehouse, which was once affiliated with Barley's Brewing Co., may make it into the Commonhouse rotation.

Barley news Canada, AB: Feed barley market holding relatively steady
The feed barley market is holding relatively steady in Alberta early in the New Year, but advances are expected looking ahead to the spring, Country Guide reported on January 19.

“There has been a fair bit of selling (over the past few weeks) but that hasn’t really pressured prices down any further,” said Jared Seitz of grain brokerage Agfinity at Stony Plain, Alta.

The steady tone in the face of increased sales was a supportive price signal, which was being borne out in the improving prices for spring delivery, he said, adding he expects to see prices start to increase for March/April/May delivery.

Freight rates are more competitive this year, which is making for better pricing across a larger region of Alberta, he added.

Many larger feedlots in southern Alberta had been using 100 per cent feed wheat rations, but many are now switching to barley or making plans to do so.

“That will help with barley demand over the next few months,” Seitz said.

However, that doesn’t necessarily mean that feed wheat prices are going down. Seitz said there was still consistent demand for feed wheat from domestic feeders, while a good export program for Canada Prairie Spring (CPS) wheat was also underpinning the feed ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NC: Bhramari Brewhouse opens in downtown Asheville
Yet another brewery could have some foaming at the mouth in downtown Asheville, WLOS reported on January 15. Bhramari Brewhouse co-owner and head brewer Gary Sernack says they'll have creative food and beer at the new venue.

"Oh, we've got a great location," Sernack said. "Asheville is becoming more and more like the Napa Valley for beer, and we've cultivated an environment that people travel from all over the world to drink our beer."

Bhramari's soft opening was on January 14. They're located at 101 South Lexington Avenue, less than a mile away from Asheville Brewing Company, Twin Leaf Brewery and Catawba Brewing Company.

Brewery news USA, OR: The Fore River Brewing Company opens its doors in Portland
South Portland's first production brewery is open, WGME reported on January 17.

The Fore River Brewing Company on Huntress Avenue opened its doors on January 14. The brewery will be open 4 days a week, Thursday through Sunday. To start, it is offering 3 different beers.

John Legassey, who is one of three owners, says other local brewers and the Brewers Guild helped teach them how set up the brewery and make quality beer.

Brewery news USA, MI: ELK Brewing opening second location in Grand Rapids
A growing Grand Rapids brewery is opening a new location, woodtv.com reported on January 19.

ELK Brewing is planning to build a second brewpub and restaurant at 400 Dodge Street NE, outside Fifth Third Ballpark in Plainfield Township.

The brewery’s owners outlined the expansion plans on January 19, the same day Founders Brewing Company announced its plans to expand.

ELK Brewing’s second site will have five times the brewing capacity and three times the room of its current brewery on 700 Wealthy Street SE.

The new brewpub will have up to 25 taps, a small store area, a full kitchen and seating for 100 people inside and 120 people outside during the summer.

The owners said they plan to open to the new restaurant and brewpub in the early summer of 2016.

Brewery news USA, OH: R. Shea Brewing Co. adding more fermenters to keep up with demand
The R. Shea Brewing Co. is growing, Akron Beacon Journal reported on January 18.

The nanobrewery, located in Akron’s Merriman Valley, has been open to beer drinkers only since September. But owner and brewer Ron Shea says he’s adding more fermenters to keep up with demand.

The brewery will boost its capacity from 23 barrels a month to 44 barrels by adding 3.5- and seven-barrel fermenters.

“With this, I will be able to keep up with taproom consumption while growing some distribution beyond Mustard Seed,” Shea said.

He’s also added four more draft lines, with two of those devoted to nitro brews.

Shea reported that his Peppermint Milk Stout on nitro, Chocolate Coffee Stout and unfiltered West Coast Citra IPA are the best-sellers.

Brewery news Philippines: San Miguel Corp. planning P80 bln preferred shares offering
San Miguel Corp. (SMC) has unveiled a plan to raise some P80 billion from the sale of preferred shares, the diversified conglomerate said in a disclosure to the stock exchange on January 14.

SMC intends to seek regulatory approval for the shelf registration of up to P80 billion worth of Series 2 preferred shares, or 1.066 billion shares at a price of P75 apiece. The shares will be issued for a period of three years.

The first tranche of the offer will involve the sale of 400 million preferred shares, yielding up to P30 billion, San Miguel said.

The company, however, did not indicate the timing of the issuance or how it intends to use the proceeds from the share sale.

SMC President and Chief Operating Officer Ramon S. Ang had said in October the company may raise as much as $1 billion from the sale of preferred shares to repay dollar debt.

In September, SMC raised P33.5 billion by selling preferred shares at P75 apiece to partly refinance P54 billion worth of similar securities due that month. Investors swamped that offering, which was five times oversubscribed.

San Miguel has some $13 billion equivalent of bonds and loans outstanding, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. Of ...More info on site

Brewery news South Africa: AB InBev may consider local production in the future - analyst
Brewing giant AB InBev, which listed on the JSE on January 15, could in future consider local production of some of its brands to make them accessible in the South African market, according to Chris Gilmour, an analyst at Absa Asset Management: Private Clients, quoted as saying by AllAfrica.

AB InBev has made an offer to acquire SABMiller for approximately £68 bln in one of the largest deals of all time. While AB InBev is the world's largest beer maker, its brands - which include Stella Artois, Budweiser and Corona - are not well known in South Africa. Most South Africans got to know Budweiser during the 2010 Fifa World Cup as Budweiser was a sponsor.

Speaking after AB InBev's listing on the JSE, Gilmour said the company could make its brands accessible through local production. "Instead of cutting jobs, the deal could create more jobs," he said.

Local production could also reduce the price of the beer brands currently selling at a premium in the local market, he said.

In his brief address during the listing ceremony, AB InBev CEO Carlos Brito said the listing was a demonstration of the company's commitment to South Africa and Africa that he said was central to ...More info on site

Brewery news Australia: Last year was a good one for Cooper Brewery’s shareholders
The past year was a good one for those affiliated with the Cooper family and their beer business started by Thomas Cooper in 1862, with the tight-knit grouping of Coopers Brewery shareholders reaping over A$13 million in dividends, The Australian reported on January 20.

Coopers Brewery’s tiny shareholder base — numbering less than 150 investors, of whom 90 per cent are linked via birth or marriage to the brewer’s founder — has received a strong flow of dividend payments from stakes in the nation’s biggest independent brewery.

Coopers shareholders pocketed an average of about A$91,500 each for 2015, spread over two dividend payments.

The brewer’s board, dominated by members of the Cooper family, paid A$6 interim and A$6 final dividends to shareholders, totalling A$13.725 mln.

The payout equalled the A$6 interim and A$6 final dividends handed out in 2014 and comes as the South Australian brewer battled a 40-year, industry-wide decline in beer consumption.

Nonetheless, late last year Coopers Brewery, which accounts for about 5 per cent of the national beer market, announced that its total beer sales for 2014-15 had increased 4.7 per cent to 78.8 million litres, the 22nd consecutive year of growth. That increase helped the business’s revenue rise to A$235.1 mln, ...More info on site

Brewery news China: Consumers swap mass-produced local beers for imports and local craft beers
When Jin Xin first started selling imported premium beer a decade ago, his bar manager predicted that it would take a month or two just to sell a single case. But within a few years business picked up, and soon customers started frequenting the bar for its India pale ales and other European beers, NDTV Food reported on January 16.

Now, one of Jin’s bars, NBeerPub, tucked away in a laid-back part of Beijing’s old town, buzzes with young Chinese customers ordering imports like Delirium Tremens, Lindemans Framboise and Brewdog Punk IPA. Jin even sold a bottle of Brewmeister Snake Venom, a high-alcohol barleywine-style beer from Scotland, for about 2,700 renminbi, or more than $420.

“Slowly, Chinese people have more money in their pocket,” Jin, 43, said in his apartment, where over 6,000 bottles from more than 60 countries filled the shelves. “After they have money, some want something better in terms of taste as well as lifestyle, especially young people.”

As tastes rapidly change, Chinese consumers are swapping mass-produced local beers for imports and local craft beers.

It is the type of opportunity that is at the heart of Anheuser-Busch InBev’s $106 billion deal to buy SABMiller, its rival global brewer. While major ...More info on site

Brewery news Russia: New generation of craft beer geeks working to change Russia’s approach to beer
It is a drizzly Monday night, but Craft rePUBlic is boisterous with the chatter of brewers and beer aficionados. Those just walking in are greeted with a half pint of Red Nelson, a saison beer made with hibiscus tea and orange peel by local brewer Alexei Sazonov, who is celebrating his birthday at the craft beer bar, The Guardian reported on January 17.

Sazonov works at Bottle Share, one of a growing number of microbreweries driving what has been dubbed the “craft revolution” in Russia, but he created Red Nelson at home under his nickname, Big Hedgehog. Sazonov says of the major Russian beer brands, whose bland lagers dominate store shelves and taps: “They boil it quickly, ferment it quickly and sell it quickly. A microbrewer brews beer he wants to drink himself.”

Russia, of course, is known for vodka rather than beer, and a popular saying holds that “beer without vodka is throwing money to the wind”. According to the latest World Health Organisation data from 2010, 51% of alcohol consumed in Russia was spirits and only 38% was beer. This vodka culture has had deadly consequences for Russian men, whose average life expectancy of just 64 years lags behind that ...More info on site

Brewery news Japan: Beer companies shifting focus to regular beer
Beer companies in Japan are shifting the focus of their sales efforts from low-malt beer and “third-segment” quasi-beer to regular beer, in expectation of an upcoming tax reduction that would boost demand for regular beer, Toronto Star reported on January 15.

The number of beer shipments in 2015, announced on January 14 by major beer companies, increased 0.1 per cent from the previous year, the first rise in 19 years.

However, the total shipment volume of beer and beer-like drinks including low-malt beer fell for the 11th year in a row.

“We concentrated our resources on Kirin Ichiban Shibori beer, and the efforts have begun to bear fruit,” Kirin Brewery President Takayuki Fuse said at a briefing session on the company’s business plan held on Jan. 8. The volume of beer shipped by the company in 2015 increased from the previous year for the first time in 21 years.

Kirin Brewery had been strengthening its overseas business on the assumption that the domestic market was contracting. However, the company now attributes declining sales to a lack of focus on the domestic market. Last year, Kirin Brewery regained lost ground by, among other measures, investing about 100 billion yen (about $856,238,000) in advertising and promotions ...More info on site

Brewery news India: United Breweries Ltd launches malt-based alcopop amid slump in demand for beer
India’s largest beer maker is offering a choice to consumers who can’t stand the beer’s bitter taste. United Breweries Ltd has just launched a malt-based alcopop—called the Kingfisher Buzz—that aims to take on the Bacardi Breezer, a fruit wine-based drink much favoured by young women, Livemint reported on January 20.

Faced with a prolonged slump in the demand for beer, United Breweries anticipates young drinkers, especially women, will spend more on malts and beers that are flavoured.

“There are enough young above-legal-age people who don’t like drinking beer,” said Samar Singh Sheikhawat, senior vice-president, marketing, United Breweries. “Say women—we have nothing in our portfolio that is for women.”

Indian liquor companies have been swiftly expanding their portfolio of alcopops, with rum and vodka makers such as Bacardi and Radico Khaitan Ltd adding flavours to low alcohol drinks that come in attractive bottles. Still, it’s a fairly small category in India.

United Breweries, which makes more than half the beer sold in India, is trying to fend off rivals such as Carlsberg and AB InBev that have been gaining share in a market that has seen sluggish growth over the past few quarters.

The launch, its second in less than 12 months—it launched a premium version ...More info on site

Brewery news Myanmar: Carlsberg agrees to change transliteration of its Tuborg Beer labels
Danish brewer Carlsberg Group announced on January 19 that it will change the Burmese transliteration of its Tuborg Beer labels following a dispute over intellectual property.

Carlsberg launched the beverage in Myanmar last April, using the name “Tu Po” in Burmese script on its products. The name is spelled and pronounced the same as the title a beloved song associated with Thingyan, the country’s biggest cultural festival.

The family of the songwriter, Myoma Nyein, said last week that it would sue the company if it did not change its labeling. The family claimed that Carlsberg preferred the phrase Tu Po over a more accurate transliteration in order to capitalize on the song’s popularity.

“In light of the claims of the relatives of the late Sayar Myoma Nyein and the general debate around the use of ‘Tu Po’ in the marketing of Tuborg Beer, we will discontinue the use of this spelling going forward and, to avoid any future misinterpretation, the Danish brand name ‘Tuborg’ will be used in Myanmar,” the company said in a statement.

“We are taking immediate steps to implement the necessary modifications and will endeavor to have this completed before Thingyan,” it continued, though Myoma Nyein’s family had initially requested that ...More info on site
