Brewery news Australia: Coopers Brewery reports record sales in 2015
Coopers Brewery sold a record 80.7 million litres of beer last calendar year, up 4.4 per cent on its numbers in 2014, despite an overall fall in national consumption in Australia, The Advertiser reported on January 21.

The results were boosted by strong sales of Coopers Original Pale Ale and Mild Ale 3.5%.

Sales of Coopers Original Pale Ale, which accounts for 52 per cent of total beer sales, rose 3.2 per cent.

Mild Ale 3.5% sales were up 13.7 per cent and is now its third largest product by volume behind Sparkling Ale, which recorded a growth of 1.8 per cent for the year.

Traditionally brewed ales make up almost 80 per cent of Coopers’ sales.

Managing director Dr Tim Cooper described the results as “especially pleasing” given the continued overall fall in beer consumption nationally.

“While Australia’s total beer consumption has fallen almost 10 per cent in the past six years, despite a growing population, Coopers’ sales have been on a solid growth trajectory for the past 22 years,” he said.

“The latest results mean Coopers now has 5 per cent of the total Australian market.

“The eastern states continue to be Coopers’ major area of growth, with total sales in Victoria, NSW and Queensland growing ...More info on site

Brewery news Tunisia: SFBT sells less beer but at higher prices in 2015
Tunisia’s leading brewer, Société Frigorifique et Brasserie de Tunis (SFBT), has published its results for 2015 and almost all the figures are in decline, Business News reported on January 20.

The only bright spot is the company beer division’s turnover but it was only possible thanks to increase in prices.

SFBT’s beer sales dropped to 1,643,880 hl last year from 1,699,514 hl in 2014. In spite of this, and thanks to raise in products prices, the company’s brewing division registered a 115.836 mln dinar turnover in 2015 vs. 105.383 mln in 2014.

SFBT’s overall turnover totaled 322.987 mln dinar versus 332.678 mln in 2014.

Brewery news Australia: Lion decides to discontinue the production of its Tap King draft beer
In a land of beer drinkers, Tap King has failed to sell to Australians, Gold Coast Bulletin reported on January 22.

Lion has decided to turn the tap off, blaming poor sales for ending its two-year experiment with its 3.2-litre take-home beer casks and the unique tap system it sold to punters who wanted to spear their own mini-kegs in the comfort of their lounge or in the kitchen.

After launching the product in 2013 by using Lionel Richie in TV ads to croon “Is it me you’re looking for" whenever the fridge door opened, Lion has conceded that no, drinkers weren’t looking for the product.

Lion issued a statement through Facebook and in emails to customers, saying: “The pleasure of draught beer in the comfort of your own castle was enjoyed by many, but unfortunately the time has come to discontinue Tap King and bid thee farewell.

“However, ultimately sales have not met expectations and the Royal Council has had to make the most difficult of decisions and stop supplying stockists."

When approached on January 21 for further comment, Lion said only: “Lion has decided to discontinue its in-home draught beer system, Tap King. Since launch, Tap King has recruited many loyal followers, with ...More info on site

Brewery news Hong Kong & UK: San Miguel Brewery Hong Kong signs beer distribution agreement with UK’s Shepherd Neame
The Hong Kong arm of the Philippines beer brand is introducing the products of the oldest brewery in England to the Macau market, Macau Business Daily reported on January 21.

San Miguel Brewery Hong Kong has reached an agreement with the English Brewery Shepherd Neame to distribute the English beer products ‘Spitfire’, ‘Whitstable Bay Pale Ale’ and ‘Whitstable Bay Blonde Lager’ in Macau and Hong Kong.

The contract was announced on January 21 and is effective until the end of 2018, according to information released by the Hong Kong arm of the Philippines-based multinational.

“The company believes that the distribution arrangement allows it to broaden its product brand portfolio and benefit from a growth in revenue in addition to the sales of the company’s own San Miguel products,” the board of the Hong Kong company explained.

Shepherd Neame is one of Great Britain’s oldest brewers. In spite of being an independent company, it exports beer to more than 35 countries under different brand labels with a production of around 281,000 brewers’ barrels a year.

For San Miguel Hong Kong, this is only one of the first deals to distribute products from other renowned international beer brands in Macau and Hong Kong.

“The Company is also currently ...More info on site

Whisky news EU & Colombia: EU requests consultations over concerns about discriminatory whisky taxes in Colombia
The European Union has requested formal consultations with Colombia under the World Trade Organisation's Dispute Settlement Understanding over concerns about discriminatory taxes and monopolies in Colombia, a move welcomed by Scotch whisky producers. This is the first stage in the WTO's dispute procedure.

The Scotch Whisky Association (SWA) said on January 13 the industry struggles to compete in Colombia because of high taxes on imported spirits and the practices of provincial alcohol monopolies which distort the market by favouring local producers. By law, Scotch whisky must be at least 40% alcohol by volume (abv), but Colombia applies a significantly lower excise rate to products at or below 35% abv. This favours domestic spirits, the vast majority of which are bottled at this strength.

The SWA said that the current situation has made it difficult for exporters of Scotch to benefit from the EU-Colombia Free Trade Agreement that came into force in 2013. Colombia committed to addressing these issues by August 2015, but this has not yet been delivered.

David Frost, Scotch Whisky Association chief executive, said:

"Scotch whisky is being treated unfairly in Colombia and is unable to compete against local spirit producers due to the discriminatory tax system and anti-competitive practices of the ...More info on site
