Brewery news USA, HI: Kona Brewing to build another brewery in Kailua-Kona
After a year-long search that included evaluating multiple sites across the Islands, Kona Brewing Co. on January 20 announced that it has signed a lease with the Queen Lili‘uokalani Trust, a private charitable trust founded in 1909 to serve native Hawaiian children, for a 2.6-acre site in Kailua-Kona. The location, which is just down the street from the original Kona Brewery & Pub, will be the future home of Kona’s new 30,000-square-foot brewery and canning operation.

The Hawaiian craft brewery is investing more than $20 million, which reflects an increase of $5 million from its original plan, to incorporate new innovations in renewable energy and water conservation into the brewery design. The new high-efficiency brewery will boost capacity to 100,000 barrels per year, enabling Kona to meet increasing local demand for its distinctive island-inspired brews, while supporting the company’s long-running commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainability. Construction and the use of local suppliers and vendors will support the local economy, and once the new brewery is operational, the company will expand its Kona Brewing pub to create additional job opportunities. As a result of the extended search and increased sustainability investments, Kona anticipates breaking ground on the new brewery this spring ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, ON: The Exchange Brewery to open its doors in Niagara-on-the-Lake on January 22
They say good things come to those who wait and Robin Ridesic is hoping her patience will pay off.

As the founder and CEO of The Exchange Brewery in Niagara-on-the-Lake, she admits it’s been a long road to get from the brewery’s conceptual stage to January 22, the day when the brewery will open its doors to the public for the first time, Niagarathisweek.com reported on January 20.

“It’s been a lot of work. It took a while, but the day is almost here and we’re excited,” she said.

Set up in a heritage designated storefront on Queen Street, Ridesic said there were some bumps along the way to opening the 10-barrel brewery with tasting room and artisanal beer store. They had to get the property rezoned to allow it to become a brewery, had five variances, added an addition and dug out the basement to house the fermenters, barrels and cold storage. That would have been enough to deal with on its own, but there were problems through the construction process which delayed the project by two months.

“But everything has come together beautifully and the space is fabulous,” she said.

While the space at 7 Queen St. — most recently ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, ON: The Upper Thames Brewing Company preparing to launch in Woodstock on June 1
The Upper Thames Brewing Company plans to open in Woodstock, Ontario on June 1. After months of planning and working with the city, the business plans to begin operations at 225 Bysham Park in just under five months, Ingerloll Times reported on January 20.

Although the Upper Thames Brewing Company hopes for that spring launch date, Carl Bloomfield, partner and co-owner, said there is a possibility the date could move.

"We're targeting that. We really want to get there," he said. "It's generally a matter of how fast the contractors work at this point and how fast the licensing comes through."

Bloomfield, along with his four other partners - Moe Morris, Chad Paton, Frank Raso and Josh Bowes - began discussing opening a craft brewery in Woodstock well over a year ago. But it wasn't until November that the group decided it was going "all in" and began work on opening their own brewery.

"It really has come together fairly quickly since then," Bloomfield said.

Morris added that, prior to November, the group had put approximately 400 man hours into the research of starting a brewery.

"Finding brewing systems, the cost of brewing systems, looking at some locations, going to other breweries and talking to them," ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, KS: Aero Plains Brewing one step closer to opening
Aero Plains Brewing is one step closer to opening in Wichita, but it won’t be downtown as its partners initially planned, Wichita Eagle reported on January 20.

Lance Minor, Ryan Waite and Brent Miller have signed a deal to open the business in 11,250 square feet at 117 N. Handley in Delano, which is just off of West Douglas behind Bicycle X-Change.

Miller owns the nearby Delano Bed & Breakfast.

“He’s a big proponent of the Delano area already,” Minor says.

“There’s already momentum,” he says of the area, “and it made sense for us to help that out.”

When the business opens this summer, it will have a tasting room with 18 beers on tap in addition to a 20-barrel brewing system.

For now, Minor says the building may look “very underwhelming,” but he says the partners are working to transform the space, which will include an art gallery.

Miller used to own Evo Gallery in Old Town in the 1990s.

“We’re going to make use of his experience and kind of put together an art gallery tasting room,” Minor says. He says his goal is to “hopefully create a space people want to enjoy.”

To go with the Aero name, there will be some aviation decor as ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, BC: Trading Post Brewing to become Langley’s first brewery soon
Trading Post Brewing is on track to being the first brewery to open in the small city of Langley, British Columbia, Canadian Beer News reported on January 21.

The brewery is being opened by local young entrepreneur Lance Verhoeff, with a team that includes brewmaster Tony Dewald and manager/director John Ohler, both of whom have many years of involvement in the brewing industry.

Set to open on February 13th, Trading Post will initially offer six beers in the on-site tasting room and growler shop, including Munich Helles Lager, Hop Session Lager, Breakfast Stout, Tropical Wheat Ale, Brett IPA and Tart Cranberry Ale. A full-service taphouse and restaurant will follow in the spring.

Brewery news USA, NC: Blue Blaze Brewing Co. targets late spring or early summer opening in Charlotte
Charlotte's west side is a step closer to toasting the opening of its first brewery, Charlotte Business Journal reported on January 21.

Blue Blaze Brewing Co. has received a building permit for its space at 528 S. Turner Ave. Plans include installing large windows to provide a view into the 15-barrel brewhouse and adding wooden touches such as an awning over the main entrance. The interior will feature a mezzanine, bar and tables to provide seating for around 125 people. And custom-made bikes will be used to deliver kegs via the nearby Stewart Creek Greenway.

CBJ's Jennifer Thomas reported on Blue Blaze and its founders, Sven Giersmann and Craig Nunn, last summer, highlighting the longtime friends' first foray into home-brewing, the origins of their new venture's name, early plans for beer offerings and more. Read up on the backstory here.

Giersmann and Nunn hope to create a community gathering spot in an area of the city that lacks the pull of the dining, drinking and entertainment options one might find in more established neighborhoods such as South End, NoDa or Plaza Midwood.

The brewery is now targeting a late spring or early summer opening.

Brewery news Canada, ON: Radical Road Brewing to open in Toronto this spring
BlogTO reports that a contact brewery that has been on hiatus for several years will soon be revived as a brewery and taproom in Toronto’s Leslieville neighbourhood.

Radical Road Brewing was founded by Jon Hodd and Simon Da Costa, brewers at Black Oak Brewery who used that facility to brew two limited run beers – Canny Man, a Scotch ale aged in whisky barrels; and The Wayward Son, a strong Belgian ale aged in pinot noir barrels – back in 2013.

The stand-alone version of Radical Road is expected to open this spring at 1177 Queen Street East near Jones Avenue in Toronto’s east end.

Brewery news USA, CA: Former Knee Deep Brewing co-owner working on opening Revulsion Brewing in West Sacramento
Seven months after separating from the brewery he helped to start, former Knee Deep Brewing co-owner Jeremy Warren is getting back in the game with Revision Brewing, a brewery founded on creative versatility and a name fraught with meaning, Brewbound reported on January 21.

In an interview with Brewbound, Warren described the new venture as his second attempt to build a company where he can experiment with the unique styles and production methods that excite him. Based in West Sacramento, Calif., Revision Brewing will focus on three types of offerings: barrel-aged beers, bold IPAs and experimental sours.

“What I wanted to really get involved in was the barrel-aging and the sour styles, and I wasn’t able to get into that at Knee Deep,” said Warren, who was already known for his ability to brew world-class IPAs.

Warren said he drew inspiration from companies like The Bruery and The Rare Barrel, which are well-known for their barrel-aging or sour programs, to help shape the remainder of Revision’s production plan.

“When you talk about sours and barrel-aging, there’s a lot of creativity, a lot of different styles that you can produce, and there’s a lot of art and science behind it,” he said.

Warren hopes ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, ON: William Street Beer Co. announces expansion plan
William Street Beer Co. has announced an expansion plan that will see it increase production by more than 350% by the summer, Canadian Beer News reported on January 15.

As detailed in a recent blog post, the brewery is awaiting arrival of new 10 hectolitre brewing and fermentation vessels. Combined with other planned capital investments, this will allow William Street to have product available more consistently for its current on-site retail and licensee sales, and to explore the option of LCBO, Beer Store and grocery store sales in the future.

Brewery news Australia: Coopers Brewery reports record sales in 2015
Coopers Brewery sold a record 80.7 million litres of beer last calendar year, up 4.4 per cent on its numbers in 2014, despite an overall fall in national consumption in Australia, The Advertiser reported on January 21.

The results were boosted by strong sales of Coopers Original Pale Ale and Mild Ale 3.5%.

Sales of Coopers Original Pale Ale, which accounts for 52 per cent of total beer sales, rose 3.2 per cent.

Mild Ale 3.5% sales were up 13.7 per cent and is now its third largest product by volume behind Sparkling Ale, which recorded a growth of 1.8 per cent for the year.

Traditionally brewed ales make up almost 80 per cent of Coopers’ sales.

Managing director Dr Tim Cooper described the results as “especially pleasing” given the continued overall fall in beer consumption nationally.

“While Australia’s total beer consumption has fallen almost 10 per cent in the past six years, despite a growing population, Coopers’ sales have been on a solid growth trajectory for the past 22 years,” he said.

“The latest results mean Coopers now has 5 per cent of the total Australian market.

“The eastern states continue to be Coopers’ major area of growth, with total sales in Victoria, NSW and Queensland growing ...More info on site

Brewery news Tunisia: SFBT sells less beer but at higher prices in 2015
Tunisia’s leading brewer, Société Frigorifique et Brasserie de Tunis (SFBT), has published its results for 2015 and almost all the figures are in decline, Business News reported on January 20.

The only bright spot is the company beer division’s turnover but it was only possible thanks to increase in prices.

SFBT’s beer sales dropped to 1,643,880 hl last year from 1,699,514 hl in 2014. In spite of this, and thanks to raise in products prices, the company’s brewing division registered a 115.836 mln dinar turnover in 2015 vs. 105.383 mln in 2014.

SFBT’s overall turnover totaled 322.987 mln dinar versus 332.678 mln in 2014.

Brewery news Australia: Lion decides to discontinue the production of its Tap King draft beer
In a land of beer drinkers, Tap King has failed to sell to Australians, Gold Coast Bulletin reported on January 22.

Lion has decided to turn the tap off, blaming poor sales for ending its two-year experiment with its 3.2-litre take-home beer casks and the unique tap system it sold to punters who wanted to spear their own mini-kegs in the comfort of their lounge or in the kitchen.

After launching the product in 2013 by using Lionel Richie in TV ads to croon “Is it me you’re looking for" whenever the fridge door opened, Lion has conceded that no, drinkers weren’t looking for the product.

Lion issued a statement through Facebook and in emails to customers, saying: “The pleasure of draught beer in the comfort of your own castle was enjoyed by many, but unfortunately the time has come to discontinue Tap King and bid thee farewell.

“However, ultimately sales have not met expectations and the Royal Council has had to make the most difficult of decisions and stop supplying stockists."

When approached on January 21 for further comment, Lion said only: “Lion has decided to discontinue its in-home draught beer system, Tap King. Since launch, Tap King has recruited many loyal followers, with ...More info on site

Brewery news Hong Kong & UK: San Miguel Brewery Hong Kong signs beer distribution agreement with UK’s Shepherd Neame
The Hong Kong arm of the Philippines beer brand is introducing the products of the oldest brewery in England to the Macau market, Macau Business Daily reported on January 21.

San Miguel Brewery Hong Kong has reached an agreement with the English Brewery Shepherd Neame to distribute the English beer products ‘Spitfire’, ‘Whitstable Bay Pale Ale’ and ‘Whitstable Bay Blonde Lager’ in Macau and Hong Kong.

The contract was announced on January 21 and is effective until the end of 2018, according to information released by the Hong Kong arm of the Philippines-based multinational.

“The company believes that the distribution arrangement allows it to broaden its product brand portfolio and benefit from a growth in revenue in addition to the sales of the company’s own San Miguel products,” the board of the Hong Kong company explained.

Shepherd Neame is one of Great Britain’s oldest brewers. In spite of being an independent company, it exports beer to more than 35 countries under different brand labels with a production of around 281,000 brewers’ barrels a year.

For San Miguel Hong Kong, this is only one of the first deals to distribute products from other renowned international beer brands in Macau and Hong Kong.

“The Company is also currently ...More info on site

Whisky news EU & Colombia: EU requests consultations over concerns about discriminatory whisky taxes in Colombia
The European Union has requested formal consultations with Colombia under the World Trade Organisation's Dispute Settlement Understanding over concerns about discriminatory taxes and monopolies in Colombia, a move welcomed by Scotch whisky producers. This is the first stage in the WTO's dispute procedure.

The Scotch Whisky Association (SWA) said on January 13 the industry struggles to compete in Colombia because of high taxes on imported spirits and the practices of provincial alcohol monopolies which distort the market by favouring local producers. By law, Scotch whisky must be at least 40% alcohol by volume (abv), but Colombia applies a significantly lower excise rate to products at or below 35% abv. This favours domestic spirits, the vast majority of which are bottled at this strength.

The SWA said that the current situation has made it difficult for exporters of Scotch to benefit from the EU-Colombia Free Trade Agreement that came into force in 2013. Colombia committed to addressing these issues by August 2015, but this has not yet been delivered.

David Frost, Scotch Whisky Association chief executive, said:

"Scotch whisky is being treated unfairly in Colombia and is unable to compete against local spirit producers due to the discriminatory tax system and anti-competitive practices of the ...More info on site
