Brewery news World: Private equity firm KKR reportedly back in tender for Peroni, Grolsch beer brandsb
The line-up of bidders for SABMiller‘s Peroni and Grolsch beers has changed, with U.S. private equity firm KKR replacing Bain Capital, which was unwilling to engage in a bidding war with industry players, Thomson Reuters reported on January 27 citing three sources familiar with the matter.

KKR was not initially shortlisted as one of the final bidders for the brands being unloaded by Anheuser-Busch InBev to smooth its $100 billion-plus takeover of SAB. However, it was later readmitted to the auction after sweetening its bid, said one of the sources.

Other private equity funds including BC Partners backed away earlier in the process, which is expected to wrap up in March.

“Price expectations were pure madness,” said one of the sources, who declined to be identified as the matter is confidential.

AB InBev, the maker of Budweiser, values the brands at no less than 2.5 billion euros ($2.73 billion), said the source, noting that strategic players were well placed to outbid private equity firms, given possible synergies.

Another bidder for the package, which also includes London craft beer Meantime, is Zurich-based investment firm Jacobs Holding, the sources said.

Jacobs, which owns 50 percent of Swiss chocolate company Barry Callebaut, had no comment.

Brewery news Brazil: Boiler explosion kills two workers, injures three others at Heineken brewery in Sao Paulo state
A boiler explosion at a Heineken beer factory in Brazil on January 26 killed two workers and injured three others, one of them seriously, the company confirmed.

The workers were employed by a subcontractor hired by the factory in Jacarei, in the interior of Sao Paulo state, and at the time of the accident they were performing tests on one of the boilers, Fox News Latino reported.

According to the metalworkers' union of Sao Jose dos Campos, the blast occurred at 9 a.m. and destroyed part of the facility.

The union said that the cause of the accident is still not known and, in a communique, demanded a "rigorous investigation" into the incident.

Heineken, meanwhile, expressed its regret over the accident and said that it is in contact with the subcontractors to offer support to the people affected by the explosion.

In a press release, the company said that the factory has temporarily suspended its production operations.

Brewery news UK: AB InBev expands non-alcoholic beer offering with Beck’s Blue Lemon
AB InBev has expanded its non-alcoholic beer range in the UK with new flavour Beck’s Blue Lemon, The Grocer reported on January 27.

With sales up 20% last year to £14.6 mln, Beck’s Blue is the UK’s bestselling non-alcoholic beer [Nielsen 52 w/e 10 October 2015].

Heineken introduced a 0.0% abv version of its lemon flavour Foster’s Radler in 2014, while last February saw Carlsberg’s San Miguel enter the alcohol-free market, with both standard and Limon versions. Carlsberg followed this with an alcohol-free version of its flagship brand in June.

Lemon flavours have also been popular in the lower abv beer segment, with popular products including Carling Zest, Foster’s Radler, and Carlsberg Citrus, all 2% - 2.8% abv.

Brewery news Mozambique & UK: Mozambican beer to become available at Nando’s restaurants across the UK in April
Mozambican brewery Cervejas de Moçambique (CDM) will start supplying its popular 2M beer to Mozambique-themed chicken restaurant Nando’s across the UK from April, Zitamar News reported on January 28.

The company, a subsidiary of brewing giant SABMiller, “plans to start supplying Nando’s UK with its 2M lager from April,” said a CDM spokesperson. Nando’s is pricing the beer at £3.70 per 330ml bottle.

Nando’s has 1,049 restaurants worldwide with the largest number (339) in the UK, according to a website run by the company’s fans. Nando’s UK currently stocks Portuguese beers Sagres and Superbock, along with Brazil’s Brahma and Savanna Cider from South Africa.

Nando’s has started stocking 2M in selected restaurants over recent weeks as a pilot scheme, but CDM will start shipping the lager to the UK in significant quantities from April.

The deal will be a welcome boost for CDM, which saw profits fall 3% last year to MT1.4 billion. The company reported a 2% fall in beer sales in its 2014 results though sales of lager were up 12% year on year, with almost 1 hectolitre sold over the 12-month period.

The deal is also a timely boost for Mozambique’s economy, with the central bank and finance ministry having recently emphasised ...More info on site
