Brewery news China: Premiumisation set to transform China’s high-volume but low-profit beer market - analysts
China’s high-volume, low-profit beer market is set to be transformed, with increased “premiumisation” providing opportunities for imported and licensed foreign beer brands, says Rabobank.

In a new report on the Chinese beer market, the Dutch bank’s analysts claim that the world’s biggest beer market suffers from relatively low profitability, though this will change through increasing consolidation and an influx of premium products will provide a platform for profit growth.

To grasp opportunities, the bank suggests that local brewers could consolidate the mainstream beer segment or expand their super-premium portfolios by importing beers or licensing overseas brands.

Meanwhile, exporters from countries with strong beer cultures would be most likely to succeed in China by forging partnerships with local brewers, says Rabobank, adding that global brewers with international brands could either enter the Chinese market quickly through a partnership with a Chinese brewer with distribution power, or through a greenfield operation.

According to the report, China has been the main driver of growth in global beer consumption, accounting for more than half of total volume increases. However, the profitability of beer in China is relatively low due to two important reasons.

“First, the Chinese market is very fragmented, resulting in fierce price competition among brewers and ...More info on site

Brewery news Nigeria: Guinness Nigeria suffers decline in half-year profit amid economic slowdown
Guinness Nigeria Plc, the country’s second-biggest brewer, said half-year profit fell as an economic slowdown hurt beer consumption, Bloomberg reported on February 1.

Net income declined 66 percent to 1.2 billion naira ($6 million) in the six months through December, the Lagos-based unit of London-based Diageo Plc said in a statement published on the Nigerian Stock Exchange website on February 1. Revenue dropped 10 percent to 49.8 billion naira.

Nigeria, Africa’s biggest economy, is facing a squeeze in consumption as the nation of more than 170 million people suffers from a slump in crude oil prices that has reduced the country’s main source of revenue. The nation’s economy probably grew 3 percent last year, the slowest pace since 1999, according to the International Monetary Fund.

Guinness Nigeria shares retreated 3.7 percent to 111.20 naira by the close of trading in Lagos, its biggest decline since Jan. 19. The shares are down 7.6 percent this year, compared with a 26 percent decline by larger competitor Nigerian Breweries Plc, part owned by Heineken NV.

Brewery news South Africa: AB InBev’s takeover of SABMiller could face significant delay due to long approval process in South Africa
The megamerger between the world’s largest brewers, AB InBev and SABMiller Plc, could face a significant delay due to a long approval process in South Africa, The Times reported on January 28

The £71-billion deal has prompted scrutiny from regulators around the globe, but the focus has been on markets such as the US and China, where AB InBev and SAB both have significant interests and a merger could impact competition. This is not the case in South Africa, SAB’s home market, as AB InBev has virtually no presence in that market.

Nevertheless, securing approval for the deal from South African regulators is not going to be easy, according to Bernstein’s Trevor Stirling. The analyst told The Times that the country’s regulatory bodies might delay approval pending agreement on issues including employment, social and economic welfare and black empowerment. South Africa “may be the slowest process, likely taking a minimum of 12 months and potentially up to 18 months or longer before final clearance,” he said.

The approval process faces complications stemming from South Africa’s three-tier regulatory authority — the competition commission, the competition tribunal and the competition appeal court – which could force AB InBev to make certain concessions regarding the deal. ...More info on site

Brewery news Belarus: 2015 beer output down 5.7%, malt production increases 4.1%
Beer production in Belarus dropped 5.7% to 4.058 mln hl last year, the national statistics committee reported n January 29.

In December alone, the volume brewed dropped by 7.3% versus December 2014 but increased by 16% versus November 2015.

The nation’s malt production was up 4.1% last year versus 2014, to 131.5 thousand tonnes. In December, it grew by 1.1% as compared to December 2014 and by 1.3% versus November 2015.

Brewery news India: Competition Commission of India approves AB InBev and SABMiller merger
The world’s No. 1 brewer AB InBev has received fair trade regulator CCI's approval to acquire its close rival SABMiller for about 71 billion pounds, The Economic Times reported on February 2.

Last year, Anheuser-Busch InBev (AB InBev) said that it had completed an agreement to acquire SABMiller Plc, making it one of the largest deal in the breweries sector.

In a tweet on February 2, Competition Commission of India (CCI) said it has approved the "acquisition of SABMiller Plc by Anheuser-Busch InBev SA/NV".

SABMiller, founded in 1895, has more than 200 beer brands in its portfolio and 70,000 employees in over 80 countries.

In India, it is primarily engaged in the production, marketing and distribution of beer. Some popular brands in its kitty are Knockout, KO, Haywards, Royal Challenge and Foster's.

For this case, CCI considered "market for the production and distribution of beer in India" as the relevant market.

Brewery news Kenya: East African Breweries registers 10% decline in mainstream beer segment in the six months to December 31
East African Breweries Limited continues to suffer stiff competition in the mainstream beer market, registering a sales decline of 10 per cent in this niche which includes flagship beer brand Tusker, The Star reported on January 30.

The regional brewer has for the second year experienced a softening market for Tusker, Bell and Serengeti beers sold in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania respectively in the half year ended December 31, 2015. During the previous half year period, the company said Tusker sales dropped by four per cent.

The company recorded a single digit growth in sales of eight per cent to stand at Sh37.5 billion during the period.

"Tusker should land at your table at around Sh150 so I think what you can do to help us is to ensure you are buying at Sh150 from your retail outlets. I think we need to do just to our (retailers) math in terms of throughput volumes versus the price that I charge," said Kenya Breweries managing director Jane Karuku. KBL is a subsidiary of EABL.

The mainstream beer segment, EABL said, has also been hit by poor business in South Sudan because of political instability which has affected market operations.

"A lot of our mainstream beer was ...More info on site

Brewery news The Czech Republic: Drug coordinator criticizes Finance Minister’s proposal to lower VAT on draught beer
The Czech Republic should fight the excessive drinking of alcohol beverages and not decrease taxes on them and make them more accessible, national drug coordinator Jindrich Voboril told CTK on January 29, criticising Finance Minister Andrej Babis's proposal for lower VAT on draught beer.

The proposal runs counter to the approved government plan of fighting alcohol impact, he said.

Czechs lead international standings in alcohol consumption. Moreover, its consumption among children and youth is one of the highest in the EU.

"The World Health Organisation (WHO) has repeatedly warned of the extreme situation concerning alcohol consumption in the Czech Republic. It says pricing is one of the most efficient tools in the fight (against drinking) and making access to alcohol more difficult. Not lowering, but raising the price matters," Voboril said.

He called Babis's (ANO) proposal populist.

Voboril said if the proposal won support, he would have to be considering his resignation.

Last year the centre-left government of the Social Democrats (CSSD), ANO and Christian Democrats (KDU-CSL) approved a plan to limit the damage caused by alcohol with the aim to cut the per capita consumption of pure ethanol by 5 percent in five years and by 30 percent in ten years, Voboril pointed out.

Brewery news Myanmar: Tiger and ABC Stout returning to Heineken and Asia Pacific Breweries
Two well-known beers, Tiger and ABC Stout, are returning to their mother company after two decades with the military-backed Myanmar Brewery, Heineken announced on February 3.

Tiger and ABC Stout, which Myanmar Brewery has produced and distributed for the Burmese market since 1995, are finally going back to Heineken and its local partner, Asia Pacific Breweries-Alliance Brewery Company Limited (APB-ABC). As of late last year, Myanmar Brewery’s license to produce the two beers expired, said Lester Tan, managing director of the Heineken joint venture APB-ABC.

“Actually, we’re the original owner of both Tiger and ABC Stout. That’s why now we’ll take them all back and sell to this expanding market,” Tan said on February 3 at a press conference.

Tiger and ABC Stout will now be brewed in Heineken’s own US$60 million brewing facility in Rangoon’s Hmawbi Township, which opened in July last year. The brewery has the technical capacity to produce 33 million litres of beer per year, but this year the company plans to expand production to about 45 million litres, according to Tan.

Of the current Tiger and ABC Stout brand designs, Tan said the company will make changes to reflect an updated product look, but assured that the taste of ...More info on site

Brewery news Kenya: East African Breweries expects higher excise duty to hit demand in Kenya
Kenya's East African Breweries Ltd (EABL) expects a hike in beer excise duty to hit demand in its home market in the coming months and will raise output of a lower-taxed cheap brand in an attempt to offset the impact, its CEO was quoted as saying by GhanaWeb on January 29.

Last month, Kenya lifted the excise tax by 43 percent to 100 shillings ($0.9785) per litre of beer, driving up retail prices by at least 20 shillings per bottle.

"Kenyan consumers are incredibly price sensitive so moving up by 20 shillings is a big deal," said Charles Ireland, group CEO of EABL, which is controlled by Britain's Diageo.

The hike in excise duty, designed to shore up government revenues, was the first one in four years.

"I would prefer that we saw a more regular increase which was smaller rather than an irregular increase, which is bigger, because I think the impact for consumers and the trade would be more manageable," Ireland said.

EABL plans to boost the output of its cheaper Senator Keg beer, which is taxed at a rate of 10 shillings per litre, to offset the impact of the taxes on mainstream and premium beers.

Sales of Senator Keg, which is dispensed ...More info on site

Brewery news Australia: China’s Snow Beer now available in Australia
Snow Beer, the biggest selling beer in the world, is now available to Australian consumers for the first time, The Shout reported on January 29.

Snow, which is brewed by CR Snow, a joint venture between SABMiller and China Resources Enterprises, is the biggest selling beer in China and has been the world's biggest seller since 2008. Sales of the beer have been concentrated in China, Hong Kong and Korea, but Dan Murphy's, Australian liquor supermarket chain owned by Woolworths Limited, has finally brought the beer to Australia, and just in time for Chinese New Year celebrations.

A spokeswoman for Dan Murphy's told TheShout: "Dan Murphy's is proud to bring the world's biggest selling beer brand, Snow, to the Australian market.

"It's clear there has been an appetite for Snow in Australia, with Dan Murphy's receiving multiple requests from customers to bring this brand of beer to stores.

"Dan Murphy's is committed to delivering Australian customers with an unbeatable range of both local and international products and the introduction of Snow beer is testament to this commitment.

"Snow complements the wide range of beer available at Dan Murphy's, including other Chinese brews like Tsingtao.

Whisky news USA: Distilled spirits continue on upward trend in 2015
The US distilled spirits industry continued on an upward trend in 2015 with a 4.1% increase in supplier sales and 2.3% uptick in volumes, according to the Distilled Spirits Council.

The spirits segment also reported 2015 as its sixth consecutive year of squeaking by the beer industry in terms of market share gains, having seen 6.7 points in total market share gains compared to beer since 2000.

Delivering the most spirited sales growth performances in 2015 were Irish whiskey (19.9%), cognac (16.2%), single-malt scotch (13.5%), tequila (9.4%), and American whiskey (7.8%).

One reason is that younger drinkers aren't drinking as much beer today, according to a Gallup survey, and light beer's decline is particularly dragging down beer's market share. The growth of whiskey and tequila, increased spirits exports, and innovative products across categories have also contributed to the improvement in spirits' market share.

Demand for American whiskey, which includes Tennessee, bourbon, and rye, is soaring both in the U.S. and abroad as global consumer interest in this segment continues to increase. In 2015, American whiskeys led export volumes at 4% growth compared to 3.4% for overall spirits exports. Rye whiskey volumes have grown 536% since 2009.
