LUPULIN GLANDS IN FULL BEAUTY

ABSTRACT
Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) is a powerful way to see exact details in a nano or micro scale. This work used SEM to assess lupulin glands from different hop varieties. These pictures show the changes and development of lupulin gland during the growing season. For each hop variety, 50 micrographs were visually assessed and compared based on lupulin surface topography, degree of fullness, and volume. The gland features were correlated and clustered against the chemical properties of the corresponding variety. The cluster data confirmed there are larger gland volumes in the bittering hop varieties independent of the country of origin. In further research it would be valuable to investigate the same hop variety grown in different countries and to determine the effect of environmental and handling conditions on the structural features of the lupulin glands.

Barley news Canada: Lethbridge feed barley prices strengthen on bargain buying
Lethbridge feed barley prices have strengthened on bargain buying, according to one market watcher, while demand for feed wheat is steady at best, Canadian Cattlemen reported on February 11.

Lethbridge barley prices have increased from C$200-C$205 in January to C$205-C$215 in February, as the grain becomes more difficult to source, said Jim Beusekom, president at Market Place Commodities.

“It’s not an issue, but it becomes a market factor,” he said.

Demand for feed barley has increased, he said, as buyers have been swayed by cheaper prices.

“I think the feed wheat situation is a little different.”

The amount of feed wheat being used is limited, but constant, Beusekom said. “It’s steady at best, and buyers just pick away at the supply that’s out there.”

Despite fluctuations within the market, feed grain prices in Lethbridge are stronger than those seen a year ago.

Producers saw increased amounts of export-quality wheat and barley this year, which take away from the amount of feed available.

“A lot of it is milling grade, so we have less pushback into the feed market with wheat.”

Producers are favouring malting barley, and have seen higher-quality yields this year, he said. Product that is rejected by malt companies becomes feed.

Barley news Canada, AB: Alberta growers to get crop insurance for malting barley
Crop insurance for malting barley will be available for Alberta growers this year, The Western Producer reported on February 11.

The idea grew out of a resolution submitted to the Alberta Barley Commission in 2014 where growers argued coverage under commercial barley insurance did not reflect the risk to growers, said Jesse Cole of Alberta Financial Services Corp.

There is higher growing risk and additional quality risk associated with malt barley, but there were also some challenges that prevented a specialized insurance program in the past, he told the Western Barley Growers Association annual meeting in Calgary on February 3-4.

AFSC wanted premium cost sharing with the federal government and there needed to be assurances the program was trade neutral.

Malt barley is not visually distinguishable from feed and it is hard to determine what’s being grown intentionally for malting end use.

Maltsters may also have different requirements for acceptable barley.

“There are a bunch of different standards between companies so it is difficult to pin down what quality level we could insure,” he said.

To be eligible, the producer must have a contract for more than 40 tonnes. The contract can be with companies outside Alberta.

Eligible varieties come from the Canadian Malting Barley Technical Centre’s recommended ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, IA: Toppling Goliath Brewing Co. to invest nearly $10 mln in expansion
Toppling Goliath Brewing Co. of Decorah, IA plans a nearly $10 million expansion, kwwl.com reported on February 12.

This will be the second new expansion for the company since they opened their doors back in 2009.

Owners say it feels amazing to keep up with the demand.

From start to finish, it takes nearly three weeks to brew and prepare a batch of beer.

Toppling Goliath President and Founder, Clark Lewey, said he's mostly looking forward to the first batch after they get settled into their new Brew House in Decorah in 2017.

"It's exciting on one end, but there are also a lot of unknowns," Lewey said.

Toppling Goliath is a 30-Barrel Brewhouse, but due to demand, they hope to expand to a 100-barrel Brewhouse.

That's nearly 200 kegs a day of hoppy deliciousness.

"It really won't change the emphasis on the beer we make. We do have some styles we will be adding. What it allows us to do is produce more of the beer we're making, which we're nowhere meeting with our current demand," Lewey said.

Toppling Goliath Brewing Co. Brewmaster, Mike Saboe, said the process has been kind of surreal.

"It's a really nice feeling to have. I think we've been so busy the past six ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, WA: Seattle’s Fremont Brewing to increase production this year
Like so many other small U.S. producers, Seattle’s Fremont Brewing is at a crossroads. On the verge of opening a second brewing facility that will eventually enable the company to produce upwards of 250,000 barrels, and flush with interest from distributors around the U.S., brewery founder Matt Lincecum has two options: step on the gas pedal and expand distribution nationwide, or grow in a more controlled fashion, methodically building out distribution into contiguous markets, Brewbound reported on February 11.

Fremont, which has expanded distribution into Idaho, just the third market where its products are sold statewide, produced only 24,000 barrels in 2015. Lincecum is planning to more than double that in 2016 and expects production to grow to about 60,000 barrels. But he’s not planning on entering more markets to get there.

“The way I like our business to grow is to go deep rather than wide,” he said.

It’s a philosophy that has permeated the business since its inception. Until last November, when Fremont signed a contract with Columbia Distributing for coverage throughout Oregon, its products were sold almost exclusively in Washington. Limited shipments were sometimes made to Northern Idaho and Denver, where the company had placements at a handful of accounts.

“It’s ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CO: The Old Colorado Brewing ready for opening in Wellington on Valentine’s Day
Northern Colorado beer lovers will have a new drinking spot option Valentine's Day with the opening of The Old Colorado Brewing Co. in Wellington, The Coloradoan reported on February 11.

Husband and wife Brandon and Tara Neckel are opening Wellington’s first microbrewery on February 14 in a 94-year-old grain elevator near downtown. The couple plans to grow its selection from three to six beers by the end of the month.

The brewery, about 10 miles north of Fort Collins, is already supplying The Wellington Grill restaurant with its brews. An Old Colorado Brewing beer was also featured recently at The Mayor of Old Town brewpub in Fort Collins.

Old Colorado Brewing has brewed about 40 barrels of beer, Tara Neckel said on February 11.

"I just hope we can meet everybody's demand and keep up with the beer," Neckel said. "If you run out of beer, there's not a quick solution."

Old Colorado Brewing initially planned to open during spring 2015. The debut date was later pushed back to December but setbacks caused the Neckels to miss that target as well.

"I didn't think this day would ever come," Tara Neckel said. "Opening a brewery in a town that's never had one before has been a ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, WI: Badger State Brewing Co. begins expansion and renovation project
A Green Bay craft brewery is planning to expand, Fox11online.com reported on February 11.

Badger State Brewing Co. says it has begun a 9,500-square-foot expansion and renovation project at its building a few blocks east of Lambeau Field.

Badger State says its expansion will include an event hall for weddings, corporate gatherings and community events. The hall will have a seating capacity for 400 people, with room for as many as 1,000 people to stand. It will also include a beer bar, prep room for catering, an outdoor patio and a viewing area for the brewery's barrel-aging room.

Other aspects of the project include an expansion of production equipment and other additions to the building.

Brewery managers say the expansion is expected to create as many as 12 new jobs.

The project is scheduled to be finished in June.

Brewery news Australia: Carlsberg and Coopers Brewing to launch jointly new Carlsberg Mid 3.5% beer
Australia will be one of the first markets globally to see the launch of the new Carlsberg Mid 3.5% beer, with Coopers Brewing adding the beer to its international portfolio, The Shout reported on February 12.

The new beer has been in development for six months and Carlsberg has worked closely with Coopers, who will be brewing the beer at its Regency Park headquarters in South Australia.

Birgitte Funch, Carlsberg’s master brewer said: “Carlsberg Mid 3.5 per cent is light, easy drinking and refreshing. The all malt recipe and Carlsberg yeast strain give a balance between body and flavour, even with a lower alcohol making Carlsberg mid-strength the ideal choice.”

The beer will be distributed by Premium Beverages and Coopers’ national sales and marketing director Cam Pearce said the beer will be available nationally from March.

“Sales of Mild Ale 3.5% grew by 13.7 per cent during 2015 to become Coopers’ third-largest product by volume,” Pearce said.

“We believe the category will continue to grow and we were looking for a mid-strength lager to round out our offering. Following discussions with Carlsberg, agreement was reached to brew and distribute Carlsberg Mid 3.5%.”

Carlsberg country manager Australia, Jacob Anderson, added: “We are excited to be launching Carlsberg ...More info on site
