Brewery news USA, PA: Number of licensed breweries nearly doubles over the last three years
The number of licensed breweries in Pennsylvania has nearly doubled over the last three years, Philly Voice reported on February 27.

According to statistics from the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board, there were 224 active breweries statewide by the end of 2015, up from 114 in 2013 and 159 in 2014.

Leading the way in Pennsylvania's expanding market are an influx of craft beer breweries, including Philadelphia trailblazers Victory, Sly Fox and Yards. In central Pennsylvania, established companies like Founders, Stone Brewing and Troegs have been joined by newcomers Alter Ego, Moo-Duck and Molly Pitcher. Out west, Draai Laag, Roundabout, Hop Farm, Voodoo stand out among an impressive group.

The surge in demand has been so swift that brewers in central Pennsylvania told the Washington Times – as early as 2014 – that it was creating incredible pressures, including longer hours and increased expenses. Two years later, a little more competition has actually been welcome.

The Liquor Control Board says another 16 breweries are in "safekeeping" status pending the completion of facility construction and LCB inspections. On top of that, 18 breweries submitted applications late in 2015 and were awaiting review.

Among those in "safekeeping" status, the Desperate Times Brewery, planned for Carlisle, revealed in documents ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, WI: Sand Creek Brewing Co. acquires two other craft breweries
Two well-established craft brewing companies in Wisconsin have been purchased but not by a macro brewing company looking to expand its portfolio, La Crosse Tribune reported on March 1.

Sand Creek Brewing Co. in Black River Falls, which in 2015 produced 9,990 barrels of beer, has announced that it has acquired Furthermore Brewing Co. of Spring Green and Cross Plains Brewing Co. in Cross Plains. Neither company had its own brewing facility but instead had their beer made on contract by other breweries.

Cross Plains had used Stevens Point Brewery until 2013, when it began using Sand Creek. Furthermore has been brewed at Sand Creek since its inception in 2006.

“Each brewery has its unique take on its style of beers,” Jim Wiesender and Todd Krueger, co-owners of Sand Creek said in a joint statement. “All three breweries together will complement each other’s strengths.

Under the arrangement, finalized in October but announced on March 1, Furthermore and Cross Plains will operate as subsidiaries of Sand Creek Brewing Co. and retain their names and distributor networks “for the time being.” Both Wayne and Larry Esser of Cross Plains Brewing Co. and Aran Madden of Furthermore will continue on as brewery representatives of Sand Creek and ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, WA: Figurehead Brewing hopes to open this summer in Seattle
With hopes of opening this summer—dependent, of course, on the teeth-pulling process that is obtaining permitting and licensing—Figurehead Brewing is in the works near the Fishermen's Terminal in Seattle, Eater reported on March 1.

Figurehead will brew on a relatively small seven-barrel system next to a 30-seat taproom, concentrating on English ales like ordinary, special, and extra special bitters, as well as Belgian-style beers, with the goal of making low alcohol pub-style offerings and concentrating on malts and yeasts as opposed to the hop-forward beers so common in the Northwest these days.

Brewery news USA, MA: Gentile Brewing Company launching in Beverly on March 4
Beverly's newest brewery opens its doors and its taps this Friday, March 4. Gentile Brewing Company is the work of Paul and Christen Gentile, who "believe good beer should be enjoyed and not fussed over", Eater reported on February 29.

The four main Gentile beers are made using traditional English-style brewing processes, and the team plans to experiment with small-batch releases, according to the website.

Gentile will serve a lightly malted blonde ale, which comes with this description: "We don't workout, but if we did, this is the beer we would drink afterward." The brewery will also have an IPA that has light caramel malts to complement the bitter hops, a porter made with roasted barley, and a stout that is "designed to be an easy drinking beer."

Brewery news USA, NC: Green Man Brewery invests $5 mln in expansion
Green Man Brewery has raised the curtain on a $5 million expansion in the brewing district of Asheville’s South Slope, Asheville Citizen-Times reported on March 1.

The space will include tasting rooms on top and bottom floors of the three-story building, with a packaging area in between. Green Man also will install a faster bottling line and will wash and fill kegs there.

The space gets its first use Saturday when it hosts a gala benefit for Open Doors of Asheville, an event to include food from area restaurants, live entertainment and an art auction.

Green Man will officially open for business in the space at 27 Buxton Ave. on St. Patrick's Day, March 17, with a rollicking party to include food trucks and a lineup of the brewery's ales. Visitors to the top floor can enjoy a patio with views of Asheville's McCormick Field baseball park in one direction and Mount Pisgah in another. There is also a view of the packaging area.

The inside top floor space has artist-crafted tables, seats and hanging lamps and room for 400, Green Man owner Dennis Thies said. There's also a shiny bar top with a copper and turquoise patina.

"This is like jumping from high school ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OH: The Old Firehouse Brewery purchases two buildings for expansion
The Old Firehouse Brewery in Williamsburg recently purchased two buildings next to the brewery with the intention of expanding into both this year, The Clermont Sun reported on February 25.

The brewery, located at 237 W. Main St. purchased the two buildings between the brewery and the corner of Main and Second Street. The sale was finalized on Feb. 5.

The plan is to move a lot of the production side into those buildings. Owners Lori Ward and Adam Cowan plan to build a walk-in and drive-in cooler, which will allow them to double-stack pallets of kegs for the first time. The buildings will give them more storage and freezer space.

Ward hopes to have everything done in the next four to six months. The added space will also allow the brewery to expand the outdoor seating and put grain silos in the back. Nothing in the current taproom will change.

The company currently is using a mobile canning company, but hopes to also put a canning line in the new buildings, which Ward plans to make visible to passerby by putting it in front of a large window.

Old Firehouse Brewery, which opened in September 2014, will begin canning this year. The canning company ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NV: Lovelady Brewing Co. getting ready for opening in Henderson
Lovelady Brewing Co. hasn't opened its doors yet — let alone its taps — but one downtown Henderson merchant is already buzzing with anticipation, Las Vegas Review-Journal reported on February 26.

"I'm going to be the main taster," joked Flemming Pedersen, owner of Chef Flemming's Bake Shop, which is across the street at 7 S. Water St.

Construction on the 6,000-square-foot brewery at 20 S. Water St. is expected to be completed at the end of this month, and the family-run business hopes to open by March 17 following its inaugural round of beer production.

"If all goes well, we're starting brewing the last week of February, and then we'll open three weeks from then," said co-owner Richard Lovelady.

Lovelady's three brothers, Robert, Jeffrey and Jerry, will be helping to run the business.

The facility, which broke ground in August, is scheduled to include a tap house with large windows overlooking Water Street, as well as outdoor patio seating. Food trucks are set to park near the business on a regular basis, Lovelady said.

He said the initial plan is to get the tap house up and running with six varieties of craft brews: sour ale, hoppy lager, double India pale ale, Belgian red, Belgian apple ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CA: Bear Republic Brewing Co. to open brewpub in Rohnert Park
Bear Republic Brewing Co. will open a brewpub in Rohnert Park, becoming the latest homegrown beer company to expand in Sonoma County as cities vie for a piece of the fast-growing industry, Santa Rosa Press Democrat reported on March 1.

The new brewpub, at the site of the shuttered Latitude Island Grill, will be in addition to Bear Republic’s original location in Healdsburg and its new production facility in Cloverdale. It is expected to open within a year.

The deal was a result of recruiting by Rohnert Park city officials, who were looking to attract a new tenant to the vacant building. Restaurateur Nino Rabbaa signed a lease in 2012 for a brewhouse at the site just south of Roberts Lake, but he never followed through on those plans.

“An opportunity arose and we decided to move on it,” said Richard G. Norgrove, Bear Republic’s brewmaster and chief operating officer. “The city fathers are really amenable to the process that we are going to go through.”

The announcement comes as Russian River Brewing Co. looks to build a second Sonoma County location in addition to its continually crowded brewpub in downtown Santa Rosa. Local officials across the county have ramped up their lobbying to ...More info on site

Brewery news Italy: Craft beer sector booming in Italy with 1,000 craft beer establishments registered at the end of last year
Craft beer consumption in Italy has tripled since 2012, reaching 17.5 million hectolitres in 2014, according to figures published by the Brewers Union (Unionbirrai).

This equals to a per capita consumption of 30 litres per year, compared with a European average of 80 litres. Overall, consumption of craft beers in Italy is now equal to 3 per cent of total beer consumption.

At the end of 2015, there were 1,000 craft beer establishments, including microbreweries, beer firms and brewpubs, compared to 872 in 2014.

Microbreweries (540 are currently registered, of which 494 fully active) are direct production plants, while beer firms (260) are structures that do not have their own factories, but that produce craft beer at third-party plants.

New technologies are also giving a boost to the sector, with business incubator Digital Magics launching WeBeers, an e-commerce platform that enables fans to buy their favourite beers with discounts and 48-hour delivery.

In addition, the service offers tips and advice on how to enjoy the beers proposed on the portal, as well as news from the Italian brewers.

However, high taxes remain the main challenge for the sector. According to the union, from January 2003 to January 2015, excise taxes grew by 117 per cent, one ...More info on site

Brewery news India: United Breweries commences supply of beer from Rajasthan brewery acquired in 2014
United Breweries (UBL) has commenced supply of beer from a brewery in Rajasthan it acquired in 2014, profit.ndtv.com reported on February 27.

In a BSE filing, United Breweries said it has commenced "supplies of beer upon commissioning of the company's brewery located at Shahjahanpur, Rajasthan".

In September 2014, UBL had acquired brewery assets of Pacific Spirits Pvt Ltd for Rs 105 crore.

The deal involved acquisitions of assets such as land, building and plant/equipment of Pacific Spirits with its brewery at Shahjahanpur in Alwar, Rajasthan.

At the time of the deal, UBL had said: "The company will be able to expand its production capacity in Rajasthan to cater to the expected further growth in the market... The company will further invest to make the brewery operational before the coming season. This acquisition will also create additional employment opportunities in the vicinity upon the brewery becoming operational."

Earlier this week, UBL promoter Mallya resigned as chairman of United Spirits.

Mallya's exit from the board of United Spirits ended a long-drawn tussle between him and the majority owner, UK's Diageo, following allegations of irregularities on loans given to UB Group companies.

Diageo-controlled United Spirits on Feburary 26 said it will continue to pursue recovery of loans worth Rs 1,337 crore from its erstwhile promoter group firm United Breweries Holdings (UB Holdings) through "dialogue or other legal means", dnaindia.com reported.

This move comes a day after embattled liquor baron and United Spirits's chairman Vijay Mallya resigned from the post and Diageo agreeing that Mallya will have no "personal liability" to the UK-based company in relation to the findings of alleged financial irregularities at the company that had triggered an acrimonious fight between them.

"We will continue to pursue all possible routes, dialogues or other legal means, to recover our dues. Through this agreement, it has been decided that the company will not go after Mallya personally but will do it with legal entities," United Spirits (USL) MD and CEO Anand Kripalu told analysts in a conference call.

A new ‘schooner-style’ glass is being introduced to support the launch on draught which, at two thirds the size of a pint, aims to help operators to boost their profit margins. The launch is further supported with branded bar runners and a striking illuminated steel font, which helps create strong standout at the bar.

Andrew Turner, category and trade marketing director at Heineken, said: “With the popularity of flavoured beers continuing to rise alongside consumer demand for a more premium drinking experience, we’re delighted to be launching Desperados on draught.

“With this new format, we are aiming to give our customers the opportunity to provide a wider choice to pub-goers, helping customers to grow their profit margins incrementally. The new font looks great and is certainly going to catch the eye of consumers on entering the bar, so we’re confident that this format will further increase the popularity of Desperados and help ...More info on site

Brewery news UK: Molson Coors joins calls to cut beer duty
Calls to cut beer duty in the UK for a fourth time in a row have been backed by a major UK brewer, Burton Mail reported on March 2.

Bosses at Molson Coors have called on Chancellor George Osborne to slash the beer duty in the budget later this month.

Frederic Landtmeters, managing director UK and Ireland at Molson Coors, told the Mail that he wanted to see another cut take place.

He said: "The beer and pub industry plays a vital role in the UK economy, contributing £22 billion to the UK and supporting almost 900,000 jobs.

"Three successive beer duty cuts have provided our industry with a much-needed boost and we would urge the Government to continue supporting this important UK industry by further reducing beer duty.

"People can show their support for a pint by writing to their local MP and asking them to back beer duty cuts."

The potential cut has the backing of more than 50 MPs who have all signed a motion led by the British Beer and Pub Association (BBPA) to cut the duty once again.

Currently, drinkers in Britain pay 52p in duty per pint in comparison to those in Germany where the duty is only 4p a pint.

Brewery news UK: Pub bosses accusing big breweries of failing to pass on lower production costs to consumers
Bitter pub bosses are accusing big breweries of ripping off beer drinkers by failing to pass on lower production costs.

The bosses hit out as three giant brewers said ale and lager prices would rise, though ingredients and delivery are cheaper, the Sunday People reports.

They say Britain’s major beer firms have cynically put 10p on a pint while also demanding the Chancellor cut beer duty in next month’s Budget.

Meanwhile, the Campaign for Real Ale’s latest figures show an average of 27 pubs shut a week, hit by changes in drinking habits, supermarket competition and the smoking ban.

An open letter to George Osborne from eight pub operators complain of “unjustified” price hikes and say brewers have not passed on previous 1p a pint cuts in duty.

“You will have no doubt spotted the trick here,” it said. “Brewers impose increases every January and then ask the Government to reduce duty in March to mitigate the outcry.

“If they really cared about jobs in the sector – and if they really had any influence over it – they would be holding or reducing prices.

“Worse still, they’re not saving a single pub with their actions. None of the duty cuts are making their way into voters’ ...More info on site
