Scientific Digest

WHAT DETERMINES THE UNIQUENESS OF A HOP VARIETY?

ABSTRACT
A Japanese research group has been hunting the mystery of hop aroma in beer for a long time. In this recent work they brewed late hopped and dry hopped beers with 18 different hop varieties! From the U.S. they looked at Apollo, Bravo, Citra, Mosaic and Summit. From Germany were Hallertau Blanc, Huell Melon, Mandarina Bavaria and Polaris. Then from New Zealand were Kohatu, Motueka, Nelson Sauvin, Pacific Jade, Rakau, Riwaka, Southern Cross, Wai-iti and Wimea. The researchers were looking for varietal differences especially in different monoterpene alcohols. They found no varietal differences in beta-ionone and nerol content, but did see variations in the other components studied - but the differences were not coherent. Things are never easy with hops!

Barley news EU: Prospects for spring grain sowings positive this year
Prospects for spring grain sowings in the European Union are positive with recent delays not causing concern and a big area expansion is expected in Poland, AgWeek reported on March 10.

Spring grains are the second round of cereals to be sown after winter grains and include spring barley, a key ingredient in beer.

Favourable weather in the EU's largest grain grower France should allow spring barley sowings to speed up following delays of about 10 days.

"Weather forecasts are conducive to a quick end of sowings, which should thus be done during the optimum period," a broker said.

Spring barley should ideally be sown by mid-March in France. By March 8, farmers had sown 40-50 percent of the planned area, brokers said.

Last year, when sowings suffered similar delays, good weather allowed farmers to sow over 40 percent of the area in the week to March 16.

Low prices mean French grain maize sowings, which usually start around end-March, may be 6 percent lower this year.

In the second largest grain producer Germany, plantings will be delayed about two weeks by a mixture of frost and rain but the delay should not cause concern, a German analyst said.

Heavy frost damage to crops in Poland means a ...More info on site
