WHAT DETERMINES THE UNIQUENESS OF A HOP VARIETY?

ABSTRACT
A Japanese research group has been hunting the mystery of hop aroma in beer for a long time. In this recent work they brewed late hopped and dry hopped beers with 18 different hop varieties! From the U.S. they looked at Apollo, Bravo, Citra, Mosaic and Summit. From Germany were Hallertau Blanc, Huell Melon, Mandarina Bavaria and Polaris. Then from New Zealand were Kohatu, Motueka, Nelson Sauvin, Pacific Jade, Rakau, Riwaka, Southern Cross, Wai-iti and Wimea. The researchers were looking for varietal differences especially in different monoterpene alcohols. They found no varietal differences in beta-ionone and nerol content, but did see variations in the other components studied - but the differences were not coherent. Things are never easy with hops!

Brewery news USA, AZ: Construction underway on Helio Basin Brewing in Phoenix
Construction is underway on the Helio Basin Brewing Company in Phoenix, with plans for a late-summer debut, azcentral.com reported on March 10.

As a combination of brewery and 135-seat restaurant, the venue will feature a 15-barrel exposition brewing system, crafting six signature beers in primarily American ale style, as well as rotating seasonal and specialty batches.

The 8,200-square-foot project is the work of entrepreneurs Dustin Hazer and Mike Conley. Hazer is the man behind the beer, having brewed professionally for almost a decade, including at Four Peaks in Tempe and, most recently, at one of the largest breweries in the country, Southern Tier Brewing Co. in Lakewood, NY. He also attended Siebel Institute, a Chicago academy that offers international educational programs in professional brewing.

Conley is a former Marine officer and MBA graduate of the W.P. Carey School of Business at Arizona State University. He recently spent time working with several brewery startups.

As for the name, Helio Basin combines helio as a play on the Greek word for sun, while basin refers to a catchall or Valley, in a salute to the Phoenix metro area.

Brewery news Canada, ON: Bellwoods Brewery to open third location this summer
A third Bellwoods Brewery location is on the way this summer, Now Toronto reported on March 4.

First, the bad news for Toronto craft beer aficionados: Bellwoods Brewery's planned expansion to Dupont is crawling along at a snail's pace, the brewery's owners have announced, and their much-anticipated second facility is now set to open in mid-2017.

Now, the good news: They've decided to open a third brewing facility in North York, which is on the fast track to open this year.

The new spot, at 20 Hafis Rd., has been in the works since last year, and brewing equipment (including a top-of-the-line bottling machine) is set to begin arriving by the end of April. Though the Hafis facility won't include a brewpub, there will be a bottle shop on-site, and there is the possibility for a tasting area.

The first beers from the new location will be ripe for the pouring this summer. But don't expect them to turn up in the LCBO anytime soon: "Our goal was to shoot for a size that would allow us to keep up with local demand, but not produce so much that our distribution channels would change dramatically, meaning that you’ll still only find our beers ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NC: Green Man Brewery's three-year expansion project about to finish
Asheville's South Slope area continues to grow as Green Man Brewery's three-year expansion project is about to finish, WLOS reported on March 6.

In less than two weeks, the company's new building will be open to the public.

Pint by pint, Asheville's second oldest brewery built a steady following.

"I'm very excited," said one customer.

The current tap room, affectionately known as Dirty Jack's, quickly filled up. Soon, Green Man will take one of its trademark beers, an ESB, into its extra special brewery.

"It's been dubbed the Green Mansion. We'll see if that sticks," said Owner Dennis Thies.

The new building will have a shipping area, new bottling line, and eventually it's where they will make specialty beers. There is also a tap room and two outdoor areas.

The costs are nearing $6 million. Thies didn't spare a penny on the project, or ask the government for any help.

"We didn't get a penny from anybody," Thies said. "We didn't go to the city and probably could have, but I'm not smart enough to know how to do that. I didn't play the game well enough, I guess. I don't know, but we didn't want to take any money, honestly."

Several other local breweries have been promised tax ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OH: Ohio Brewing Co. set to open again in Akron
A brewery and a beer will see a resurgence soon in Northeast Ohio, as Ohio Brewing Co. gets set to open its doors and Cellar Rats Brewery is bringing back the old P.O.C. as a "craft pilsener", Cleveland.com reported on March 6.

The breweries were just two of the several dozen participating in the 10th annual Winter Warmer Fest, held March 5 at Windows on the River. Breweries from across the state, from Akron to Zanesville, poured a variety of ales for 1,400 beer lovers who strolled through multiple levels of the venue indoors and a cask-ale area outside.

Chris Verich said his Ohio Brewing Co., which has had its share of openings and closings over the years - will open in a week in Akron's Highland Square neighborhood. He said the location – directly across from the Highland Square branch of the Akron-Summit County Public Library - will have 30 taps. In January, Ohio Brewing's Jingle Bell Ale won the People's Choice Award for best beer at the Chagrin Valley Chili Brew-off.

Meanwhile, Joel Sandrey of Cellar Rats has been working on acquiring the rights to the old "P.O.C." label. Pilsener Brewing Co. used to make the beer, tabbed "Pride of Cleveland" ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, WA: Airways Brewing launches larger brewery in Kent
On Thursday, March 10th, Airways Brewing proudly announced the launch of a new, larger brewery and tap room in Kent, as well as the release of its 6th Anniversary Mosaic Pilsner.

“We’re excited to officially unveil our plans to relocate our brewery and tap room to a larger, more visible location in Kent,” said Alex Dittmar, founder and head brewer at Airways Brewing Company. “We considered many options on how and where to grow, but after an exhaustive search, we’re happy to have found a great space in Kent that will allow us to increase our production, as well as provide a better quality experience for our tap room guests.”

Construction on the new, 9,000 square foot space, located on 212th St., has started and is expected to be completed this spring. The new location will replace the original brewery and tap room and will allow for up to a fourfold increase in production, as well as an increase in tap room seating capacity.

In celebration, the 6th Anniversary Mosaic Pilsner is available starting March 10 on draft and in 22 oz. bottles at both Airways locations. Bottles will also start rolling out in the Puget Sound region at select specialty bottle shops ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, WI: 3 Sheeps Brewing Co. on target to open larger brewery and taproom in Sheboygan soon
The owners of Sheboygan-based 3 Sheeps Brewing Co. say they’re on target to relocate to an expanded space inside the former north-side Coca-Cola plant by early summer, while their public taproom should open there in April, sheboyganpress.com reported on March 7.

The move will provide the fast-growing craft brewer with about 40,000 square feet of space, which is about 10 times the size of its current location at the Hops Haven bar and restaurant in Sheboygan.

With that comes the opportunity to significantly increase production and to create a destination for beer enthusiasts via tours and an expansive barrel warehouse, where the brewer will operate a public tap room and host live music, group events and release parties.

“If you want to see what we’re all about, we’ll have it all right there,” said Grant Pauly, 3 Sheeps founder and brewmaster.

A recent visit found Pauly and co-owner James Owen overseeing remodeling of the two buildings that comprise the former Coca-Cola plant at 1837 North Ave., which has stood vacant since 2013.

Pauly, a Manitowoc native, and Owen, who's from New York, first met in college at Northwestern before coming together in 2012 to open 3 Sheeps, which has grown much quicker than they ever ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, TX: Bakfish Brewing Co. to become Pearland’s first microbrewery on March 14
Pearland's first microbrewery will open March 14, Chron reported on March 10.

Bakfish Brewing Co. owners Brian Allen and Kris Szecsy will debut on March 14 with five flagship brews. A smaller brewing system will allow for experimentation with specialty beers in the future.

More than a year in the making, the brewery's lineup, according to its site, will include a Belgian wit, Belgian-inspired Texas blonde ale, brown porter, India Pale Ale (IPA) and a double IPA.

"We are awaiting TABC (Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission) label approval to sell our beers to outside accounts,” Allen says. "That said, we have verbal commitments from a number of local dining establishments such as Center Court Pizza."

The duo left their full-time careers to pursue their passion for brewing.

They will debut in an 8,000-square-foot space, which includes a 1,200-square-foot and a 2,000-square-foot tap room.

"We are excited to be a part of the Pearland and surrounding communities and look forward to sharing our beer with them," Allen says.

Brewery news USA, NC: Wicked Weed adding a fourth brewery to its chain
Asheville's fast-growing Wicked Weed brewing company is adding a fourth location to its chain - a $1.5 million production brewery for sour beers in Arden, near Sierra Nevada Brewing and the Asheville Regional Airport, Citizen-Times reported on March 11.

The brewery will handle an increasing demand for sour beers, which take a year or more to produce, brewer and co-owner Walt Dickinson said. Sours have been made at the downtown Funkatorium brewery but "we have just run out of room," he said. The Funk House will occupy an existing 57,000-square-foot building in Arden, he said.

"We won't have to do a lot of construction, maybe some renovation" to the building, he said. A 30-barrel brewing system will be installed and Wicked Weed will likely move in this summer, he said. Some beers may be released this year, but "most of the barrel-aged beers take a year to produce, so it will be a while" before they arrive for sale, he said.

The company, which employs about 200 workers, will likely shift around the existing workforce to staff the new brewery, he said.

Sour beers have become increasingly popular with a segment of craft drinkers, but are often brewed away from standard ales and lagers ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OH: Wadsworth Brewing Co. to open in late summer in downtown Wadsworth
Isham Elementary School may have been razed several years ago, but a little piece of the school will live on in a new brewery opening downtown, Ohio.com reported on March 9.

Ernie Joy and Ericha Fryfogle-Joy, who are opening the Wadsworth Brewing Co. in late summer, plan to build their bar top out of the wooden slats removed from the Isham gymnasium.

They also will use the flooring — which they purchased through a bidding process — as trays to hold sampler glasses.

Those are a few of the ways that their two-barrel nanobrewery will pay homage to the Wadsworth community.

Joy and Fryfogle-Joy are renovating the building at 126 Main St. into a brewery and tasting room. Right now, the interior is a shell — albeit an attractive one with a well-worn wooden floor and exposed red brick on the walls.

The couple, who have lived in Wadsworth for more than 17 years, had been debating whether to open a brewery in the community for a while and finally asked themselves a simple question: “If somebody else does it, will we regret it?”

They both answered yes.

“We felt this town would be great for something like this,” said Joy, who has a shaved head, full ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, ON: Lake of the Woods Brewing Co. gets federal assistance for expansion
A craft brewery on the western reaches of Ontario is getting federal assistance to help it snatch a larger share of the booming market for independent brews, CanadianManufacturing.com reported on March 9.

Lake of the Woods Brewing Co., which pours a range of beers—from its Papermaker Pilser, to its forests of Northern Ontario-inspired Sasquatch Black Lager—will receive C$149,319 from the Federal Economic Development Initiative for Northern Ontario (FedNor).

“Thanks to the Government of Canada’s investment in our production line, we will be able to offer our distinctive and flagship beers in smaller formats that are better suited for distribution,” Taras Manzie, the suds maker’s president and CEO said. “We look forward to strengthening our company’s position in the market and expanding our loyal customer base.”

Designed to spur growth in the small city on the Manitoba border, the company will use the investment to buy larger fermentation tanks and canning equipment that will allow it to scale up.

The company’s beer is currently available throughout Ontario and Manitoba.

Brewery news USA, CO & NY: New Belgium Brewing expands into New York in May
Colorado-based craft brewery New Belgium Brewing is planning to expand into New York in May 2016, marking its expansion into 44th state, Drinks Business Review reported on March 7.

The company, which is opening a second production facility in North Carolina, has entered into agreements with 14 wholesalers for distribution throughout the state.

The wholesalers include eight Anheuser-Busch distributors, four Miller/MillerCoors houses and two independents.

New Belgium Northeast and Canada division sales director Rich Rush was quoted by brewbound.com as saying: "New York is a big one for us. It's a high density, fast-paced market and there are a lot of craft-savvy customers throughout the state. We now have the capacity to make sure we can keep the pipeline full, so the timing is ideal on all counts."

The company will initially offer Fat Tire, Ranger IPA, Citradelic IPA, Heavy Melon Watermelon Lime Ale (seasonal) and Rampant Imperial IPA.

Consumers will also be able to get a taste of New Belgium's other offerings such as 12-oz bottles of its Fat Tire, Ranger, Citradelic, Heavy Melon, Rampant and Glutiny (gluten-reduced) brands. Fat Tire and Citradelic will also be available in can forms.

The company will start shipping of Slow Ride Session IPA, 1554 Black Lager and Lips ...More info on site

Barley news EU: Prospects for spring grain sowings positive this year
Prospects for spring grain sowings in the European Union are positive with recent delays not causing concern and a big area expansion is expected in Poland, AgWeek reported on March 10.

Spring grains are the second round of cereals to be sown after winter grains and include spring barley, a key ingredient in beer.

Favourable weather in the EU's largest grain grower France should allow spring barley sowings to speed up following delays of about 10 days.

"Weather forecasts are conducive to a quick end of sowings, which should thus be done during the optimum period," a broker said.

Spring barley should ideally be sown by mid-March in France. By March 8, farmers had sown 40-50 percent of the planned area, brokers said.

Last year, when sowings suffered similar delays, good weather allowed farmers to sow over 40 percent of the area in the week to March 16.

Low prices mean French grain maize sowings, which usually start around end-March, may be 6 percent lower this year.

In the second largest grain producer Germany, plantings will be delayed about two weeks by a mixture of frost and rain but the delay should not cause concern, a German analyst said.

Heavy frost damage to crops in Poland means a ...More info on site
