    • 2. Brewery News

The world's biggest brewer, Anheuser-Busch, said on August 26 it had signed up Dutch brewer Heineken to sell its flagship Budweiser brand in Italy, after its previous partner pulled out to market a rival beer, according to Reuters. Birra Peroni, which had sold Budweiser in Italy since 1995, said it was working on the launch of Miller Genuine Draft, following its takeover by the world's second-biggest brewer, SABMiller Plc, earlier this year. Anheuser-Busch said the transfer of rights to brew, market and distribute Budweiser, the world's top-selling beer, would take effect on November 11, 2003. Heineken is the world's fourth-biggest brewer. SABMiller, which bought a 60 % stake in Peroni in May, said it planned to launch Miller Genuine Draft in Italy toward the end of 2003. The maker of Miller Lite, Pilsner Urquell and Castle beers is struggling to turn around U.S. brewer Miller, which it bought for $5.6 billion in July of last year. The firm disappointed investors in May by saying the recovery would take three years. Budweiser sales accounted for about four percent of total Peroni volumes in 2002.

Baltika Brewing has received Aa3 (rus) long-term and RUS-1 short-term credit ratings from the Interfax Rating Agency, the Russian affiliate of Moody"s Investors Service, according to Russian Beer Union. The ratings reflect the company"s leading position in the Russian market, the wide recognition of its name and brands and its strong financial situation, Baltika"s press office asserted yesterday. The ratings also reflect the strength of Baltika"s management in achieving and holding its leading position in the market, the office said. The rating agency analysts stressed that Baltika was likely to grow faster than the market and further consolidate its market leadership. The long-term Aa3 (rus) rating is a statement of very high credit-worthiness in relation to other borrowers, while the short-term RUS-1 rating signifies the very highest credit-worthiness in relation to other Russian borrowers. Baltika Brewing was founded in 1990 and registered in July 1992. The book value of the company is approximately $4.02 million divided among 107,087,200 common shares and 13,485,600 Type A preferred stock with par value of one ruble. The chief shareholder is Baltic Beverage Holding AB (74%). For the first quarter of 2003, Baltika produced 3.2 million hectoliters of beer, with export sales (183,000 hectoliters) up 9.5% over the comparable quarter of 2002.

Beer consumption in Australia was marginally down in 2002 but per capita consumption at 87 litres is still relatively high according to Canadean's latest Australia Beer Report. Imports continue to grow; up 22% in 2002, however they still take only 3% of consumption. The report also reveals that Corona from Mexico is now the leading import brand having taken over the number one spot from Heineken.

A very cold summer in Japan cost a major fall in beer sales. The temperature was 2,6 degrees below normal, which hat a disastrous consequence for the sale of beers. The five major breweries in Japan has delivered 12 per cent less beers, compared to the same month last year. Asahi Breweries has at the same time lowered its net income forecast for the year by 15 per cent.

      4. Barley News

For 2003-04 barley production in Canada is forecast to increase by 68% due to higher expected harvested area and yields. This is partly offset by sharply lower carry-in stocks, and supplies are expected to rise by 43%. The forecast is based on Statistics Canada's June seeded area estimates. Exports of malting barley are expected to increase significantly while feed barley exports remain historically low, although higher than in 2002-03. Lower cattle inventories are expected to reduce 2003-04 feed demand for barley. However, feed use is expected to be higher than 2002-03 as barley displaces imports of US corn in western Canada. Carry-out stocks are forecast to increase slightly. Off-Board feed barley prices are expected to decrease sharply. The CWB PRO for No.1 CW Feed barley is $125/t vs the 2002-03 PRO of $158/t. The CWB PRO for Special Select Two Row designated barley is $194/t, vs $241/t in 2002-03, largely due to increased supplies in North America and Australia.

Ukrainian barley exporters face difficulties with issuance of export documents, AgriMarket.Info reported on August 22. Exporting companies, in order to attract necessary volumes of feed barley and encourage grain owners to sell, have mostly increased the level of bids up to 740 to 750 hryvnias per tonne on a CPT-port basis (5.33 hryvnias = $1). However, most of the exporters continue to face grave difficulties with receiving phyto-sanitary and quarantine certificates for the volumes of grain they already bought. Issuance of the papers has for different reasons been either suspended or delayed.
