Brewery news USA: Craft and Mexican beers are US beer industry’s best stories
Heading into Cinco de Mayo, craft beer and Mexican beer brands are the U.S. beer industry’s best stories — and Constellation Brands knows that all too well, MarketWatch reported.

Before 2013, however, Constellation Brands Inc. didn’t brew a drop of beer. Sure, its Crown Imports subsidiary has had exclusive U.S. distribution rights to the Grupo Modelo brands — including Corona, Modelo, Negra Modelo, Pacifico and Victoria — since 2007 and had been distributing them in the Western U.S. since buying Chicago-based distributor Barton Beers in 1993. However, Constellation — a Victor, N.Y.-based purveyor of beer, wine and spirits — hadn’t produced a beer of its own until after the Department of Justice ruled that Anheuser-Busch InBev’s NV’s 2013 purchase of Grupo Modelo for $20.1 billion violated U.S. antitrust laws.

Constellation was awarded the U.S. rights to the Grupo Modelo brands and, after sealing a $4.75 billion deal with AB InBev in June 2013, began producing beer for the U.S. market at a facility in Nava, Mexico. By the middle of 2015, with a whole lot of help from Constellation’s beers, Nielsen noted that Mexican beer sales made up 7.8% of all U.S. beer sales by volume. Though their 10.2% growth from the ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OR: Craft Brew Alliance reports Q1 results
Craft Brew Alliance, Inc. (“CBA”), a leading craft brewing company in the US, on May 5 announced results for the first quarter ended March 31, 2016. The results, which were consistent with the guidance provided during CBA’s 2015 earnings call on March 3, 2016, underline the continued double-digit growth of Kona Brewing Co. and reinforce the confidence in achieving its full-year guidance, CBA said.

CBA’s first quarter results were largely impacted by the temporary closure of its largest-volume brewery in Portland, which enabled the completion of multiple strategic operational projects to increase brewing capacity and gross margin. In addition to the Portland brewery expansion, CBA also kicked off the site preparation for the new Kona brewery and the launch of a new can line in Portsmouth to support its strategic partnerships with Appalachian Mountain Brewery and Cisco Brewers.

As previously disclosed, CBA expected the Portland brewery closure to result in a first quarter shipment decline of 15,000 to 20,000 barrels, along with commensurate impacts to first quarter revenue, gross margin, and capacity utilization. With key operations enhancement projects on track and first quarter results in line with management’s expectations, CBA is reconfirming full-year guidance and providing insight to its anticipated performance for ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OR: Sasquatch Brewery to expand this summer into huge new brewing facility
Sasquatch Brewery will expand this summer into a huge new 4,000 square foot brewing and cidermaking facility in the Northwest Industrial District in Portland, Willamette Week reported on May 3.

But no worries, the current wildly popular brewpub will stay put.

Sasquatch has been operating at the edge of its brewing capacity for quite some time already, says manager Alex Beard. "We have plateaued in terms of what we can do," Beard says, "unless we were doing shifts and making multiple brews a day, we'd hit what we were capable of. We want to have room for barrels, room to do some fun stuff."

Their current brewing space is only about 300 square feet, leaving no chance they could expand beyond their current four 7-barrel fermenters. Their 15-bvarrel tank already has to be stored on the back deck.

The new facility 2532 NW 30th Avenue—a stone's throw from the giant Portland Brewing facility—will add not only another 15-barrel brewery and plenty of storage space, but also a 90-barrel cider fermenter, making it one of the largest cideries in town.

They also plan to open a taproom in their Northwest production facility.

In part, says Bergen, the added capacity will let Sasquatch finish some projects ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, TX: Flix Brewhouse getting ready to open two new locations and double capacity at initial brewery
When Flix Brewhouse opened in Round Rock the summer of 2011, it was an experiment — a previously unheard-of combination movie theater and microbrewery. Sort of like the Alamo Drafthouse, except that the beer at Flix was and still is made in-house, Austin360.com reported on May 4.

Needless to say, it’s proved to be a success. There are now a few additional Flix Brewhouses across the country, including two upcoming locations in Texas: one in Denton County and another in Sugar Land. And there are now big changes coming to the original Flix. With the upgrade to a 7-barrel system in June, the brewpub plans to double brewing capacity — allowing Flix to distribute into Austin.

Although very few bars will receive Flix beers on draft, that’s nonetheless a boon for Flix and head brewer Justin Rizza, who still hears groans from Austinites about how far of a drive north his brewery is.

“I want to have tap takeovers and introduce Austin to what Round Rock has to offer. Maybe inspire people to drive up here for a change,” he said.

He’s hoping the taste of Flix’s mainstay brews, like the Satellite Red IPA, Luna Rosa Wit and Saison de Walt (a tribute beer ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CA: Fieldwork Brewing Company expands production, forecasts increase in sales
One year old Fieldwork Brewing Company has expanded production capacity at its Berkeley, California brewery to over 12,000 bbls per year. Fieldwork sold over 5,000 bbls in its first 13 months of operation and is forecasting 9,000+ bbls for 2016, Brewbound.com reported.

“We are thrilled by the response we have received in the Bay Area since we opened in early 2015,” said Alex Tweet, Co-founder and Head Brewer. “The beers are selling out as quickly as we can package them and this expansion will help us keep up with the growing demand.”

Fieldwork will be expanding production capacity to 18,000 bbls per year in August of 2016.

Brewery news USA: Stone Brewing Co. forms company geared toward investing in smaller craft breweries to help them remain independent
Stone Brewing Co. CEO Greg Koch has announced the formation of True Craft, a $100 million company geared toward investing in smaller craft breweries to help them remain independent, nbcsandiego.com reported on May 5.

A statement from Escondido-based Stone Brewing said True Craft will make minority investments in craft brewers while allowing those brewers to retain control of their business and culture. The new venture’s structure is still in formation, with further details to be announced at a later date.

“Some people start companies to sell out. Some start companies because they are compelled to follow their passion. True Craft is for the latter,” said Koch, who co-founded Stone Brewing with company President Steve Wagner in 1996.

Koch said craft beer needs an “alternative model” that can help founders avoid selling off their companies in order to grow and compete.

Officials said True Craft has been in the making for the past 18 months, and Stone Brewing will be participating as a founding member. The new venture has received an initial $100 million from an unnamed investor group.

The U.S. craft beer industry has seen several small- and mid-sized players fully or partially acquired by larger macrobrewers in recent years. During 2015, those included the ...More info on site

Brewery news Australia: Australia’s antitrust regulator clears AB InBev’s takeover of SABMiller
Australia's antitrust regulator on May 5 cleared beer giant Anheuser Busch InBev SA's planned $100 billion takeover of rival SABMiller Plc, saying the deal would not adversely affect the domestic market, Economic Times reported.

"The ACCC considers that the proposed acquisition is unlikely to result in higher beer prices for consumers," Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) Chairman Rod Sims said in a statement.

The deal would not hurt competition in Australia because AB Inbev sold its beers in Australia only via distributors, "has only a limited direct company presence in Australia and does not brew beer here," the ACCC said.

The green light from Australia removes another potential antitrust obstacle to the world's No. 1 beer company's deal to buy its nearest rival, one of the biggest corporate takeovers on record. AB InBev has said it expects to complete the purchase by the end of 2016, but still has to secure antitrust clearance in Europe, where both it and its target are headquartered.

AB InBev is the No. 2 beer supplier in Australia, behind Lion Nathan, owned by Japan's Kirin Holdings Co Ltd.

The ACCC said AB InBev has until now had its beers, which include Corona, distributed in ...More info on site

Brewery news South Africa: South Africa’s competition watchdog granted extra five days to study AB InBev’s takeover of SABMiller
South Africa's competition watchdog was granted on May 5 an extra five days to study Anheuser-Busch InBev's planned $106 billion takeover of SABMiller - a fifth extension that could delay the consumer industry's biggest ever deal, Reuters reported.

"There are several outstanding issues that should be considered. The merging parties are aware of these issues, and hence they have consented to the extension," Competition Commision spokesman Itumeleng Lesofe told Reuters.

The Commission was due to finish its investigation on May 5, after it was granted a 15-day extension. It has already extended the deadline four times.

The new deadline expires on May 12.

Drawn-out scrutiny by the South African regulator could frustrate the Budweiser brewer's goal of completing the acquisition in the second half of 2016 and delay reaping the financial benefits of combining the world's No.1 and 2 brewers.

Lesofe declined to elaborate on the Commission's concerns but said an additional five days might not be enough to address the outstanding issues.

In a bid to fast-track the regulatory probe of the deal, AB InBev, struck a deal with the South African government that included investing $66 million to support small farmers and freeze layoffs for five years.

South Africa has a history of taking ...More info on site

Brewery news Ethiopia: Foreign investments in Ethiopia’s beverage industry showing increase
Foreign investment in Ethiopia's beverage industry is showing massive increase as multinational companies are increasingly attracted to the industry, according to the Ethiopian Food, Beverage and Pharmaceuticals Industry Development Institute.

The Institute says investment in alcoholic, non-alcoholic beverages and soft drinks as well as stimulants industry have shown a tremendous progress during the past decade.

Institute Beverage Processing Directorate Director Aklilu Kefyalew said multinational beverage companies are continuing to increase their presence in Ethiopia's rapidly growing economy.

"Hence, Ethiopia is attracting more investment as a business and world tourism destination, beverage investment has become the lucrative market for the wine and beer industry."

According to Aklilu, breweries are helping transform Ethiopia's business landscape with alcoholic beverage industries having a lion's share in terms of investment and market coverage.

By the end of the fiscal year, the country's export revenue from the alcoholic beverage industry is expected to hit USD 17 million. Over USD 6 million has already been secured during the past six months, he added.

In line with its policy of encouraging private investment, the Ethiopian government privatized state-owned breweries including Harar and Meta.

The Director said despite the rapid expansion of brewery investment, the inefficient supply capacity of malt factories has been a major constraint ...More info on site
