50 WAYS OF GREEN

ABSTRACT
What a great name for a presentation! From a brewery manufacturer's point of view, possibilities on how to introduce more hops into the brewing process were presented. This presentation covered brewing performance in terms of hop extraction and reproducibility using a hop bag and the hop slurry technology, and then the aspects of removing the green gold (hops) again.

Barley news Canada: Barley use forecast to increase by 11% this season
For 2015-16, Canada’s total domestic barley use is forecast to increase by 11% to 6.1 mln tonnes which is below the previous five-year average. The modest usage increase is due to increased feed use as industrial use remains unchanged, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada reported in May.

Barley exports are forecast to decrease by 17% to 2.05 mln tonnes due to lower world feed barley trade and trend malt barley demand.

Barley carry-out stocks are expected to increase by 15% to 1.4 mln tonnes, or slightly higher than the previous five-year average.

Canadian barley stocks are expected to increase by 12% from 2014-15. The bulk of increase is in the Praire Provinces. Overall, total Canadian barley stocks are estimated to be 4% higher than the previous five-year average.

For 2016-17, barley-seeded area is forecast to increase by 4% from 2015-16, to 2.743 mln ha, due to good barley values and near steady values for malt barley.

Production is forecast to increase by 3% to 8.5 mln tonnes due to the higher area and a forecast for average yields.

Due to slightly higher production and higher carry-in stocks, supply is expected to increase by 5% to 9.95 mln tonnes. Total domestic use is forecast ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NC: Ahseville’s Thirsty Monk pub chain buys French Broad Brewery
Two established Asheville breweries are coming together as the Thirsty Monk pub chain buys French Broad Brewery near Biltmore Village, Asheville Citizen-Times reported.

It's the first combination of Asheville breweries in the history of local craft brewing, which dates to 1994. The French Broad brand and brewery will continue.

The deal should close this summer, said Thirsty Monk founder and owner Barry Bialik. Thirsty Monk brews at Open Brewing on Hendersonville Road, which is also owned by Bialik. It has been making Belgian-style beers sold at the three Monk pubs in Asheville.

French Broad, which dates to 1997, has been owned by Andy Dahm. French Broad is best known for such beers as Gateway Kolsch IPA and 13 Rebels ESB. Its beers are sold in bottles and cans and distributed across North and South Carolina, Tennessee, Alabama and Louisiana.

The buyout will let Thirsty Monk expand its brewing production while continuing the French Broad beers, Bialik said.

Major brewery buyouts and combinations have been in the news this year, in particular the planned merger of AB InBev, maker of Budweiser beers, and SABMiller, which produces Bud's longtime rival Miller. AB InBev has also been acquiring U.S. craft brewers.

"This is the Asheville way to do it," ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, ON: Beau’s All Natural Brewing Company to maintain independence by handing ownership over to employees
The largest independent producer of organic beer in Canada says it plans to maintain that independence by handing ownership over to its employees, The Globe and Mail reported.

The plan, announced on May 16, will see the approximately 150 employees of Beau’s All Natural Brewing Company buy the Vankleek Hill, Ont., brewery over the next 25 to 30 years.

“We very much want to stay independent and we feel that the best way to do that is to start moving ownership over to the employees,” says Steve Beauchesne, chief executive officer of Beau’s.

Mr. Beauchesne, 40, says he has no plans to step away from the business in the near future. Instead, he says he wants to create a succession plan that will leave the business in good hands when he is ready to move on.

“What I don’t want to do is get to the point where I’m 60 years old and have no succession plan, no exit strategy in place,” he says.

He says the company’s 10th anniversary seemed like a good time start.

Currently, Mr. Beauchesne, his father and his siblings own 57 per cent of the company. Early employees and initial investors, all friends and family members, own the rest.

The shares that ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MT: Backslope Brewing brought local beer back to Columbia Falls
Backslope Brewing brought local beer back to Columbia Falls, Great Falls Tribune reported.

Carla and Darin Fisher opened the brewery in March after a Kickstarter campaign to raise capital.

“We very much want this to be a community space. We want to make sure we’re providing something the community is looking for,” Fisher said. “We wanted capital and the community to feel invested in the business.”

And, the $15,000 campaign helped spread word of the new brewery. People who pledged money received incentives such as stickers, growlers and other items with the Backslope logo.

“The excitement was palpable. Anywhere Darin and I went, we’d get the question: When are you opening?” Fisher said. “We were happy people were so excited about it.”

The building owner invested in an extensive remodel, which slowed the opening but resulted in a big, open space.

“We didn’t think it would happen, and then when the opportunity came up to purchase the brewing equipment than had been Desert Mountain’s, we were able to do this,” Fisher said. “We decided we were ready to give it a try, and we saw the community was excited about it and looking for something like this.”

So far the most popular beer has been the Crooked ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada: Molson Coors acquires minority stake in Brasseur de Montréal craft brewery
Molson Coors's Canadian craft division has purchased a minority stake in craft brewer Brasseur de Montréal, TVA Nouvelles reported on May 17.

Six Pintes, Molson Coors’ craft division, was created in 2011. The purchase of a stake in Brasseur de Montréal is its first partnership in Quebec. Previously the division had made acquisition of shares in Creemore brewery (Ontario) and Granville Island (British Columbia).

Brasseur de Montréal owners said the partnership will give their beers access to Molson’s huge distribution network in the country while the brewery will still remain independent.

Brewery news USA: AB InBev brings in Estrella Jalisco with demand for Mexican beers on the rise
Anheuser-Busch InBev is bringing Estrella Jalisco across the border to the U.S. with demand for Mexican beers on the rise, Seeking Alpha reported on May 20.

The brewer acquired Estrella in the Grupo Modelo deal.

Estrella fills in a bit of a gap in AB InBev's portfolio with Corona out its control in the U.S. due to a DOJ agreement. The company is advertising the brand widely, including on Spanish-language TV networks.

Early reports on demand for the brand have been very encouraging, AB InBev said.

Brewery news USA, MI: Glasshouse Brewing waiting for the final licenses from the state
The beer is brewed, the glasses are ready and the staff is anxiously waiting to welcome customers to Ann Arbor's newest brewery, MLive.com reported.

Glasshouse Brewing is now simply waiting to receive the final licenses from the state so it can begin pouring its product to thirsty guests.

"We're ready to open right now. We're waiting on the state for our final approval," said Brent Payeur, one of the owners of the brewery.

Brent, his father Steve Payeur and brother Brad Payeur have been working on making Glasshouse a reality for more than two years and as expected, they're extremely excited to get the doors open. But even Brad admits the idea of actually opening up the brewery is causing some stress.

"It's kind of nerve wracking. You're still nervous because you're not open," Brad said, adding that he wants to know what people think of the beer and the brewery.

Once those permits are approved and Glasshouse is open, six different craft beers will be on tap including a porter, a smoked stout, an America IPA, and amber wheat beer, an English ordinary bitter and a Saison.

Head brewer Kuma Ofori-Mensa, who previously worked as a brewer at Arbor Brewing Company joined the team earlier ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, IL: Rockford Brewing Co. becomes Prairie Street Brewing Co.
Rockford Brewing Co. has a new, but familiar, name: Prairie Street Brewing Co., Rockford Register Star reports

Rebranding of the brewery began quietly last month with new graphics and colors on menus, coasters and other materials. The Prairie Street brand will get a much larger public unveiling this week with the start of Dinner on the Dock on Thursday and Rockford City Market on Friday.

Rockford Brewing Co. opened in the Prairie Street Brewhouse, 200 Prairie St., in 2013. The beer company and building it is in have become synonymous.

"We had two names and that was confusing people, including us," said Dustin Koch, who, with Reed Sjostrom and Chris Manuel, founded the brewery in a building rich with beer history.

Beer was first made on Prairie Street in 1849 when Jonathon Peacock started brewing. Several brewers subsequently operated out of the building, until brewing ceased in 1945. But with the explosion in popularity of craft beer, it made sense to bring a brewery to the building after owners Loyd and Diane Koch undertook a $12 million renovation of the landmark property.

Now it's a mixed-use development of offices, loft apartments, a restaurant, bars, docks, and reception and meeting space. And beer.

But the return of ...More info on site

Brewery news EU: AB InBev set to win conditional EU approval for its takeover of SABMiller - sources
Brewer Anheuser-Busch InBev is set to win conditional EU approval for its $100 billion-plus takeover of SABMiller after agreeing to substantial asset sales, Reuters reported on May 20 citing three people familiar with the matter.

The Belgium-based maker of Budweiser and Stella Artois is looking to boost its presence in Africa and Latin American countries to offset weaker markets such as the United States, where drinkers are shunning mainstream lagers in favor of craft brews and cocktails.

The takeover, one of the biggest in the corporate world, will give AB InBev a third of the global beer market.

AB InBev, already the biggest brewer in the world, managed to allay EU competition concerns by agreeing to sell SABMiller's Peroni, Grolsch and Meantime beer brands to Asahi Group Holdings Ltd, the people said.

Last month, the company also announced plans to sell SABMiller's business in Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Romania and Slovakia to appease lingering worries from the European Commission.

The Commission and Ab InBev declined to comment.

The EU competition enforcer is scheduled to decide on the deal by May 24. Australian and South African authorities have already given the green light.

AB InBev is also selling SABMiller's stake in U.S. joint venture MillerCoors to Molson Coors ...More info on site

Barley news Russia: Barley export declines in March 2016
According to preliminary data, in March 2016 Russia exported 301.8 thousand tonnes of barley which was much less than the 721.4 thousand tonnes exported in March 2015, UkrAgroConsult reported.

Since the beginning of the season barley exports from Russia have dropped by 13% - to 3.9 mln tonnes. Saudi Arabia remained the main importer of Russian barley with 55% of the total exports in this season. In general, the key Russian barley markets remained the same as in last season. Export to such Arab countries as Egypt, the United Arab Emirates and Kuwait increased.

Brewery news Latvia: Beer production down 16% in the first quarter of this year
In the first quarter of 2016, beer production in Latvia dropped 16 per cent year-on-year to 0.15 mln hl, the Excise Goods Administration of the Latvian State Revenue Service (VID) reported on May 19.

Beer imports in the first three months of this year were down 5.52 per cent from the respective period in 2015 to 0.17 mln hl.

Altogether 0.29 mln hl of beer were released for consumption in Latvia between January and March this year, this was a 8.49 per cent reduction from the same period in 2015. In the first quarter of 2016, Latvia exported 18.17 thousand hl of beer, which was a 10.92 per cent decline from January to March 2015. The Latvian State Revenue Service said that beer production in Latvia in 2014 declined 34 per cent year-on-year because Aldaris, a leading Latvian brewery, moved part of its production outside Latvia and significantly reduced its local output.

0.86 mln hl of beer were produced in Latvia in 2015, which is a 12 per cent decline from 2014. Despite the slump, potential co-operation partners in China and Armenia have voiced interest in the products of Latvia’s Bauskas Alus brewery.

Brewery news Sri Lanka: Lion Brewery (Ceylon) forced to halt brewing in Biyagama because of floods
Floods caused by heavy rain in Sri Lanka in the past several days have halted production at Lion Brewery (Ceylon), the company said in a stock exchange filing on May 20.

Its factory at Biyagama has been affected by flood waters from the Kelani River and production has been halted. “Management will assess the impact to the factory once the water recedes and will inform shareholders of the status accordingly,” the statement said. The company is trying to bring operations back to normal as soon as possible, it said.
